This paper generalizes the classical theory of Newton polygons from the case of general linear groups to the case of split reductive groups. It also gives a root-theoretic formula for dimensions of Newton strata in the adjoint quotients of reductive groups.
We generalize purity of the Newton stratification to purity for a single break point of the Newton point in the context of local G-shtukas respectively of elements of the loop group of a reductive group. As an application we prove that elements of the loop group bounded by a given dominant coweight satisfy a generalization of Grothendieck's conjecture on deformations of p-divisible groups with given Newton polygons.
We generalize the notion of Ekedahl-Oort strata to elements in the loop group of any connected reductive group, and call the resulting discrete invariant the truncation of level 1 of the element. We give conditions for the Newton points occurring among the elements of a given truncation of level 1 and especially for the generic Newton point in a given truncation stratum. We prove that truncation strata are locally closed and give a description of the closure of each stratum. We also translate our results back to the original Ekedahl-Oort stratification of the reduction modulo p of Shimura vari…
We consider the Newton stratification on Iwahori double cosets for a connected reductive group. We prove the existence of Newton strata whose closures cannot be expressed as a union of strata, and show how this is implied by the existence of non-equidimensional affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties. We also give an explicit example for a group of type $A_4$.
We study the Newton stratification of the adjoint quotient of a connected split reductive group G with simply connected derived group over the field F of formal Laurent series in one variable over the field of complex numbers. Our main result describes the centralizer of a regular semisimple element in G(F) whose image in the adjoint quotient lies in a certain generic subset of a given Newton stratum. Other noteworthy results include analogues of some results of Springer on regular elements of finite reflection groups, as well as a geometric construction of a well known homomorphism from the f…
Let LG be an algebraic loop group associated to a reductive group G. A fundamental stratum is a triple consisting of a point x in the Bruhat-Tits building of LG, a nonnegative real number r, and a character of the corresponding depth r Moy-Prasad subgroup that satisfies a non-degeneracy condition. The authors have shown in previous work how to associate a fundamental stratum to a formal flat G-bundle and used this theory to define its slope. In this paper, the authors study fundamental strata that satisfy an additional regular semisimplicity condition. Flat G-bundles that contain regular strat…
The Newton strata of a reductive $p$-adic group are introduced in \cite{Newton} and play some role in the representation theory of $p$-adic groups. In this paper, we give a geometric interpretation of the Newton strata.
The set of Newton strata in a given Iwahori double coset in the loop group of a reductive group G is indexed by a finite subset of the set B(G) of Frobenius-conjugacy classes. For unramified $G$ we show that it has a unique minimal element and determine this element. Under a regularity assumption we also compute the dimension of the corresponding Newton stratum. We derive corresponding results for affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties.
Let G be a reductive group and X be a Luna stratum on the quotient space V//G of a rational G-module V. We consider torsors over X with both non-commutative and commutative structure groups. It allows us to compute the divisor class group and the Cox ring of a Luna stratum under mild assumptions. This techniques gives a simple cause why many Luna strata are singular along their boundary.
We study parabolic reductions and Newton points of G-bundles on the Fargues-Fontaine curve and the Newton stratification on the $B_{dR}^+$-Grassmannian for any reductive group G. Let $Bun_G$ be the stack of G-bundles on the Fargues-Fontaine curve. Our first main result is to show that under the identification of the points of $Bun_G$ with Kottwitz's set B(G), the closure relations on the topological space $|Bun_G|$ coincide with the opposite of the usual partial order on B(G). Furthermore, we prove that every non-Hodge-Newton decomposable Newton stratum in a minuscule affine Schubert cell in t…
We study the Ekedahl-Oort stratification for good reductions of Shimura varieties of PEL type. These generalize the Ekedahl-Oort strata defined and studied by Oort for the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties (the "Siegel case"). They are parameterized by certain elements w in the Weyl group of the reductive group of the Shimura datum. We show that for every such w the corresponding Ekedahl-Oort stratum is smooth, quasi-affine, and of dimension l(w) (and in particular non-empty). Some of these results have previously been obtained by Moonen, Vasiu, and the second author usin…
Let K be a compact Lie group and fix an invariant inner product on its Lie algebra. Given a Hamiltonian action of K on a compact symplectic manifold X, the normsquare of the moment map defines a Morse stratification of X by locally closed symplectic submanifolds such that the stratum to which any x in X belongs is determined by the limiting behaviour of its downwards trajectory under the gradient flow with respect to a suitably compatible Riemannian metric on X. The open stratum indexed by 0 retracts K-equivariantly via this gradient flow to the minimum which is the zero-locus of the moment ma…
Motivated by constructing moduli spaces of unstable objects, we use new ideas in non-reductive GIT to construct quotients by parabolic group actions. For moduli problems with semistable moduli spaces constructed by reductive GIT, we consider associated instability (or HKKN) stratifications, which are often closed related to Harder-Narasimhan stratifications, and construct quotients of the unstable strata under various stabiliser assumptions by further developing ideas of non-reductive GIT. Our approach is to construct parabolic quotients in stages, in order for the required stabiliser assumpti…
We prove an analog of the Gauss-Bonnet formula for constructible sheaves on reductive groups. As a corollary from this formula we get that if a perverse sheaf on a reductive group is equivariant under the adjoint action, then its Euler characteristic is nonnegative.
We prove several basic extension theorems for reductive group schemes. We also prove that each Lie algebra with a perfect Killing form over a commutative $\dbZ$-algebra, is the Lie algebra of an adjoint group scheme.
For unramified reductive groups, we determine the connected components of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties in the partial affine flag varieties. Based on the work of Hamacher-Kim and Zhou, this result allows us to verify, in the unramified group case, the He-Rapoport axioms, the ``almost product structure" of Newton strata, and the precise description of mod $p$ isogeny classes predicted by the Langlands-Rapoport conjecture, for the Kisin-Pappas integral models of Shimura varieties of Hodge type with parahoric level structure.
Let $k$ be a field of characteristic zero, let $G$ be a connected reductive algebraic group over $k$ and let $\mathfrak{g}$ be its Lie algebra. Let $k(G)$, respectively, $k(\mathfrak{g})$, be the field of $k$-rational functions on $G$, respectively, $\mathfrak{g}$. The conjugation action of $G$ on itself induces the adjoint action of $G$ on $\mathfrak{g}$. We investigate the question whether or not the field extensions $k(G)/k(G)^G$ and $k(\mathfrak{g})/k(\mathfrak{g})^G$ are purely transcendental. We show that the answer is the same for $k(G)/k(G)^G$ and $k(\mathfrak{g})/k(\mathfrak{g})^G$, a…
Let G be a complex reductive group and let C be a smooth curve of genus at least one. We prove a converse to a theorem of Atiyah-Bott concerning the stratification of the space of holomorphic G-bundles on C. In case the genus of C is one, we establish that one has a stratification in the strong sense. The paper concludes with a characterization of the minimally unstable strata in case G is simple.
We consider the Newton stratification on Iwahori double cosets in the loop group of a reductive group. We describe a group-theoretic condition on the generic Newton point, called cordiality, under which the Newton poset (i.e. the index set for non-empty Newton strata) is saturated and Grothendieck's conjecture on closures of the Newton strata holds. Finally, we give several large classes of Iwahori double cosets for which this condition is satisfied by studying certain paths in the associated quantum Bruhat graph.
We generalize results of P. Schneider and U. Stuhler for GL_l+1 to a reductive algebraic group G defined and split over a non-archimedean local field K. Following their lines, we prove that the generalized Steinberg representations of G with coefficients in any abelian group are cyclic. When G is semi-simple of adjoint type, we give an expression of these representations, whenever it is possible and in particular for those that are of maximal degree, in terms of the parahoric subgroups of G.
For arbitrary reductive groups $G$ defined over a finite field, we decompose Newton strata in the special fiber of moduli spaces of global $G$-shtukas into a product of Rapoport-Zink spaces and Igusa varieties. This allows us to compare the $\ell$-adic cohomology of these spaces together with the various actions on them.
When a reductive group $G$ acts linearly on a complex projective scheme $X$ there is a stratification of $X$ into $G$-invariant locally closed subschemes, with an open stratum $X^{ss}$ formed by the semistable points in the sense of Mumford's geometric invariant theory which has a categorical quotient $X^{ss} \to X//G$. In this article we describe a method for constructing quotients of the unstable strata. As an application, we construct moduli spaces of sheaves of fixed Harder-Narasimhan type with some extra data (an '$n$-rigidification') on a projective base.
Let $\widehat{G}$ be a connected reductive group over an algebraically closed field with a pinning-preserving outer automorphism $σ$. Jantzen's twining character formula relates the trace of the action of $σ$ on a highest-weight representation $V_μ$ of $\widehat{G}$ to the character of a corresponding highest-weight representation $(V_σ)_μ$ of a related group $\widehat{G^{σ, \circ}}$. This paper extends the methods of Hong's geometric proof for the case $\widehat{G}$ is adjoint, to prove that the formula holds for all connected reductive groups, and examines the role of additional hypotheses. …
Let G be a split reductive group. We introduce the moduli problem of "bundle chains" parametrizing framed principal G-bundles on chains of lines. Any fan supported in a Weyl chamber determines a stability condition on bundle chains. Its moduli stack provides an equivariant toroidal compactification of G. All toric orbifolds may be thus obtained. Moreover, we get a canonical compactification of any semisimple G, which agrees with the wonderful compactification in the adjoint case, but which in other cases is an orbifold. Finally, we describe the connections with Losev-Manin's spaces of weighted…
We present the analogue, for an arbitrary complex reductive group G, of the elliptic integrable systems of Sklyanin. The Sklyanin integrable systems were originally constructed on symplectic leaves, of a quadratic Poisson structure, on a loop group of type A. The phase space, of our integrable systems, is a group-like analogue of the Hitchin system over an elliptic curve E. We consider the moduli space of pairs (P,f), where P is a principal G-bundle on E, and f is a meromorphic section of the adjoint group bundle. We show: 1) The moduli space admits an algebraic Poisson structure. It is relate…
Let G be a complex reductive group and V a G-module. Let π: V \to V//G be the quotient morphism and set N(V) = π^{-1}(π(0)). We consider the following question. Is the null cone N(V) reduced, i.e., is the ideal of N(V) generated by G-invariant polynomials? We have complete results when G is SL_2, SL_3 or a simple group of adjoint type, and also when G is semisimple of adjoint type and the G-module V is irreducible.
Let G be a (real or complex) linear reductive algebraic group acting on an affine variety V. Let W be a subvariety. In this work we study how the G-orbits intersect W. We develop a criterion to determine when the intersection can be described as a finite union of orbits of a reductive subgroup. The conditions of the criterion are easily verified in practice and are used to construct continuous families of (non-isomorphic) nilpotent Lie groups which do not admit left-invariant Ricci soliton metrics. Other applications to the left-invariant geometry of Lie groups are also given. The note finishe…
Let G be a reductive algebraic group over the complex field and O_h be a closed adjoint orbit through a semisimple element h. By a result of Borho and Kraft (1979), it is known that the asymptotic cone of the orbit O_h is the closure of a Richardson nilpotent orbit corresponding to a parabolic subgroup whose Levi component is the centralizer Z_G(h) in G. In this paper, we prove an analogue on a semisimple orbit for a symmetric pair (G, K).
Let g be a complex semisimple Lie algebra, and f : g --> g/G the adjoint quotient map. Springer theory of Weyl group representations can be seen as the study of the singularities of f. We give a generalization of Springer theory to visible, polar representations. It is a class of rational representations of complex reductive groups, for which the invariant theory works by analogy with the adjoint representations. Let G|V be such a representation, f : V --> V/G the quotient map, and P the sheaf of nearby cycles of f. We show that the Fourier transform of P is an intersection homology sheaf on V…
