Let (X, ω) be a compact connected Kaehler manifold of complex dimension d and E_G a holomorphic principal G-bundle on X, where G is a connected reductive linear algebraic group defined over C. Let Z (G) denote the center of G. We prove that the following three statements are equivalent: (1) There is a parabolic subgroup P of G and a holomorphic reduction of the structure group of E_G to P (say, E_P) such that the bundle obtained by extending the structure group of E_P to L(P)/Z(G) (where L(P) is the Levi quotient of P) admits a flat connection; (2) The adjoint vector bundle ad(E_G) is numerically flat; (3) The principal G-bundle E_G is pseudostable, and the degree of the charateristic class c_2(ad(E_G) is zero.
Let H be a semisimple algebaric group and let X be a smooth projective curve defined over an algebraically closed field k. In the first part of this paper we show that the moduli of semistable principal H-bundles exists once given a "low-height" representation of H. We also show the projectivity of the moduli space if p > ψ, where ψis a representation theoritic index. The projectivity is a consequence of a semistable reduction theorem. The irreducibility of the moduli space of semistable H-bundles for simple and simply connected group is obtained as a consequence.
Let $X$ be a normal projective variety defined over an algebraically closed field $k$ of positive characteristic. Let $G$ be a connected reductive group defined over $k$. We prove that some Frobenius pull back of a principal $G$-bundle admits the canonical reduction $E_P$ such that its extension by $P\to P/R_u(P)$ is strongly semistable. Then we show that there is only a small difference between semistability of a principal $G$-bundle and semistability of its Frobenius pull back. This and the boundedness of the family of semistable torsion free sheaves imply the boundedness of semistable princ…
We give a Miyaoka-type semistability criterion for principal Higgs G-bundles E on complex projective manifolds of any dimension, i.e., we prove that E is semistable and the second Chern class of its adjoint bundle vanishes if and only if certain line bundles, obtained from the characters of the parabolic subgroups of G, are numerically effective. We also give alternative characterizations in terms of a notion of numerical effectiveness of Higgs vector bundles we have recently introduced.
We prove that the relative log de Rham cohomology groups of a projective semistable log smooth degeneration admit a natural \textit{limiting} mixed Hodge structure. More precisely, we construct a family of increasing filtrations and a family of nilpotent endomorphisms on the relative log de Rham cohomology groups and show that they satisfy a part of good properties of a nilpotnet orbit in several variables.
We show that the moduli space M(r,c) of semistable sheaves on n-dimensional projective space with support of dimension one, with multiplicity r and with Euler characteristic c is isomorphic to M(r,-c).
Let X be a smooth projective complex variety, and let G be an algebraic reductive complex group. We define the notion of principal G-sheaf, that generalises the notion of principal G-bundle. Then we define a notion of semistability, and construct the projective moduli space of semistable principal G-sheaves on X. This is a natural compactification of the moduli space of principal G-bundles. This is the announcement note presented by the second author in the conference held at Catania (11-13 April 2001), dedicated to the 60th birthday of Silvio Greco. Detailed proofs will appear elsewhere.
In characteristic zero, semistable principal bundles on a nonsingular projective curve with a semisimple structure group form a bounded family, as shown by Ramanathan in 1970's using the Narasimhan-Seshadri theorem. This was the first step in his construction of moduli for principal bundles. In this paper we prove boundedness in finite characteristics (other than characteristic 2), when the structure group is a semisimple, simply connected algebraic group of classical type. The main ingredient is an analogue of the Mukai-Sakai theorem (which says that any vector bundle admits a proper subbundl…
We study the restrictions of rank 2 semistable vector bundles E on P^2 to conics. A Grauert-Mulich type theorem on the generic splitting is proven. The jumping conics are shown to have the scheme structure of a hypersurface J_{2} in P^5 of degree c_{2}(E) when c_{1}(E)=0 and of degree c_{2}(E)-1 when c_{1}(E)=-1. Some examples of jumping conics and jumping lines are studied in detail.
We give another proof of Le Potier's result and some variants on moduli spaces of semistable sheaves on the projective plane, using the Bridgeland stability conditions. As an application we study the wall-crossing phenomena of the Hilbert schemes of points on the projective plane.
We construct a compactification of the universal moduli space of semistable principal $G$-bundles over $\overline{\textrm{M}}_{g}$, the fibers of which over singular curves are the moduli spaces of $δ$-semistable singular principal G-bundles.
Studying degenerations of moduli spaces of semistable principal bundles on smooth curves leads to the problem of constructing and studying moduli spaces on singular curves. In this note, we will see that the moduli spaces of $δ$-semistable pseudo bundles on a nodal curve constructed by the first author become, for large values of $δ$, the moduli spaces for semistable singular principal bundles. The latter are reasonable candidates for degenerations and a potential basis of further developments as on irreducible nodal curves. In particular, we find a notion of semistability for principal bundle…
Let E_G be a principal G-bundle over a compact connected Kähler manifold, where G is a connected reductive complex linear algebraic group. We show that E_G is semistable if and only if it admits approximate Hermitian-Einstein structures.
We give a new simple proof of boundedness of the family of semistable sheaves with fixed numerical invariants on a fixed smooth projective variety. In characteristic zero our method gives a quick proof of Bogomolov's inequality for semistable sheaves on a smooth projective variety of any dimension $\ge 2$ without using any restriction theorems.
Let $X$ be a geometrically irreducible smooth projective curve defined over a field $k$. Assume that $X$ has a $k$-rational point; fix a $k$-rational point $x\in X$. From these data we construct an affine group scheme ${\mathcal G}_X$ defined over the field $k$ as well as a principal ${\mathcal G}_X$-bundle $E_{{\mathcal G}_X}$ over the curve $X$. The group scheme ${\mathcal G}_X$ is given by a ${\mathbb Q}$--graded neutral Tannakian category built out of all strongly semistable vector bundles over $X$. The principal bundle $E_{{\mathcal G}_X}$ is tautological. Let $G$ be a linear algebraic gr…
We show a few basic results about moduli spaces of semistable modules over Lie algebroids. The first result shows that such moduli spaces exist for relative projective morphisms of noetherian schemes, removing some earlier constraints. The second result proves general separatedness Langton type theorem for such moduli spaces. More precisely, we prove S-completness of some moduli stacks of semistable modules. In some special cases this result identifies closed points of the moduli space of Gieseker semistable sheaves on a projective scheme and of the Donaldson--Uhlenbeck compactification of the…
In this article we study the behaviour of semistable principal $G$-bundles over a smooth projective variety $X$ under the extension of structure groups in positive characteristic. We extend some results of Ramanan-Ramanathan \cite{Ramanan-Ramanathan} on rationality of instability flags and show that the associated vector bundles via representations of $G$ are not too unstable and the instability can be bounded by a constant independent of semistable bundles. As a consequence of this the boundedness of the set of isomorphism classes of semistable $G$-bundles with fixed degree and Chern classes …
We prove a semistable reduction theorem for principal bundles on curves in almost arbitrary characteristics. For exceptional groups we need some small explicit restrictions on the characteristic.
In this short note, we show that K-semistable Fano manifolds with the smallest alpha invariant are projective spaces. Singular cases are also investigated.
We show that a principal G bundle on a smooth projective curve over a finite field is strongly semistable if and only if it is defined by a representation of the fundamental group scheme of the curve into G.
It is known that a vector bundle E on a smooth projective curve Y defined over an algebraically closed field is semistable if and only if there is a vector bundle F on Y such that the cohomologies of E\otimes F vanish. We extend this criterion for semistability to vector bundles on curves defined over perfect fields. Let X be a geometrically irreducible smooth projective curve defined over a perfect field k, and let E be a vector bundle on X. We prove that E is semistable if and only if there is a vector bundle F on $X$ such that the cohomologies of E\otimes F vanish. We also give an explicit …
Let G be a simple linear algebraic group defined over the complex numbers. Fix a proper parabolic subgroup P of G and a nontrivial antidominant character χof P. We prove that a holomorphic principal G-bundle E over a connected complex projective manifold M is semistable and the second Chern class of its adjoint bundle vanishes in rational cohomology if and only if the line bundle over E/P defined by χis numerically effective. Similar results remain valid for principal bundles with a reductive linear algebraic group as the structure group. These generalize an earlier work of Y. Miyaoka where he…
We generalize the Hitchin-Kobayashi correspondence between semistability and the existence of approximate Hermitian-Yang-Mills structures to the case of principal Higgs bundles. We prove that a principal Higgs bundle on a compact Kaehler manifold, with structure group a connected linear algebraic reductive group, is semistable if and only if it admits an approximate Hermitian-Yang-Mills structure.
We study Miyaoka-type semistability criteria for principal Higgs G-bundles E on complex projective manifolds of any dimension. We prove that E has the property of being semistable after pullback to any projective curve if and only if certain line bundles, obtained from some characters of the parabolic subgroups of G, are numerically effective. One also proves that these conditions are met for semistable principal Higgs bundles whose adjoint bundle has vanishing second Chern class. In a second part of the paper, we introduce notions of numerical effectiveness and numerical flatness for principa…
We introduce a notion of Gieseker stability for coherent sheaves on tame Deligne-Mumford stacks with projective moduli scheme and some chosen generating sheaf on the stack in the sense of Olsson and Starr \cite{MR2007396}. We prove that this stability condition is open, and pure dimensional semistable sheaves form a bounded family. We explicitly construct the moduli stack of semistable sheaves as a finite type global quotient, and study the moduli scheme of stable sheaves and its natural compactification in the same spirit as the seminal paper of Simpson \cite{MR1307297}. With this general mac…
We generalize the definition of alpha invariant to arbitrary codimension. We also give a lower bound of these alpha invariants for K-semistable Q-Fano varieties and show that we can characterize projective spaces among all K-semistable Fano manifolds in terms of higher codimensional alpha invariants. Our results demonstrate the relation between alpha invariants of any codimension and volumes of Fano manifolds in the characterization of projective spaces.
Let G/P be a rational homogeneous variety, where P is a parabolic subgroup of a simple and simply connected linear algebraic group G defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. A homogeneous principal bundle over G/P is semistable (respectively, polystable) if and only if it is equivariantly semistable (respectively, equivariantly polystable). A stable homogeneous principal H-bundle (E_H ,ρ) is equivariantly stable, but the converse is not true in general. If a homogeneous principal H-bundle (E_H ,ρ) is not equivariantly stable but not stable, then E_H admits an action ρ…
Let $H$ be a semisimple algebraic group. We prove the semistable reduction theorem for $μ$--semistable principal $H$--bundles over a {\it smooth projective variety $X$} defined over the field $\bc$. When $X$ is a {\it smooth projective surface} and $H$ is simple, we construct the algebro--geometric Donaldson--Uhlenbeck compactification of the moduli space of $μ$--semistable principal $H$--bundles with fixed characteristic classes and describe its points. For large characteristic classes we show that the moduli space of $μ$--stable principal $H$--bundles is non--empty.
We define an overconvergent version of the Hyodo-Kato complex for semistable varieties $Y$ over perfect fields of positive characteristic, and prove that its hypercohomology tensored with $\mathbb{Q}$ recovers the log-rigid cohomology when $Y$ is quasi-projective. We then describe the monodromy operator using the overconvergent Hyodo-Kato complex. Finally, we show that overconvergent Hyodo-Kato cohomology agrees with log-crystalline cohomology in the projective semistable case.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective threefold of Picard number one for which the generalized Bogomlov-Gieseker inequality holds. We characterize the limit Bridgeland semistable objects at large volume in the vertical region of the geometric stability conditions associated to $X$ in complete generality and provide examples of asymptotically semistable objects. In the case of the projective space and $ch^β(E)=(-R,0,D,0)$, we prove that there are only a finite number of nested walls in the $(α,s)$-plane. Moreover, when $R=0$ the only semistable objects in the outermost chamber are the 1-dimensional Gi…
We study a class of torsion-free sheaves on complex projective spaces which generalize the much studied mathematical instanton bundles. Instanton sheaves can be obtained as cohomologies of linear monads and are shown to be semistable if its rank is not too large, while semistable torsion-free sheaves satisfying certain cohomological conditions are instanton. We also study a few examples of moduli spaces of instanton sheaves.
The aim of this paper is to give a proof of the restriction theorems for principal bundles with a reductive algebraic group as structure group in arbitrary characteristic. Let $G$ be a reductive algebraic group over any field $k=\bar{k}$, let $X$ be a smooth projective variety over $k$, let $H$ be a very ample line bundle on $X$ and let $E$ be a semistable (resp. stable) principal $G$-bundle on $X$ w.r.t. $H$. The main result of this paper is that the restriction of $E$ to a general smooth curve which is a complete intersection of ample hypersurfaces of sufficiently high degree's is again semi…
Let X be a smooth complex projective curve of genus g bigger or equal to 1. If g is bigger than 1 assume further that X is either bielliptic or with general moduli. Under a natural condition on slopes, we prove that there exists a short exact sequence of semistable vector bundles with given ranks and degrees. The importance of the paper consists of the new method adopted for the proves.
Let $H$ and $H'$ be two ample line bundles over a smooth projective surface $X$, and $M(H)$ (resp. $M(H')$) the coarse moduli scheme of $H$-semistable (resp. $H'$-semistable) sheaves of fixed type $(r,c_1,c_2)$. We construct a sequence of blowing-ups which describes how $M(H)$ differs from $M(H')$ not only when $r=2$ but also when $r$ is arbitrary. Means we here utilize are elementary transforms and the notion of a sheaf with flag.
In this paper we construct the moduli of semistable principal bundles with structure group a semisimple group, over nonsingular curves in positive characteristic, with good bounds on the prime.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective curve of genus $g$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p>2$. We prove that any rank $3$ nilpotent semistable Higgs bundle $(E,θ)$ on $X$ is a strongly semistable Higgs bundle. This gives a partially affirmative answer to a conjecture of Lan-Sheng-Zuo \cite{LanShengZuo12ii}\footnotemark[1]. In addition, we prove a tensor product theorem for strongly semistable Higgs bundles with $p$ satisfying some bounds (Theorem \ref{TensorTheorem}). From this we reprove a tensor theorem for semistable Higgs bundles on the condition that the Lan-Sheng-Zuo c…
We give an algebraic geometric compactification of certain moduli spaces of semistable E-pairs in the sense of Yokogawa. In particular, we obtain a compactification of the moduli spaces of semistable Higgs pairs on a curve which were constructed by N. Hitchin.
Sheaves on non-reduced curves can appear in moduli space of 1-dimensional semistable sheaves over a surface, and moduli space of Higgs bundles as well. We estimate the dimension of the stack $\mathbf{M}_{X}(nC,χ)$ of pure sheaves supported at the non-reduced curve $nC~(n\geq 2)$ with $C$ an integral curve on $X$. We prove that the Hilbert-Chow morphism $h_{L,χ}:\mathcal{M}^H_X(L,χ)\rightarrow |L|$ sending each semistable 1-dimensional sheaf to its support have all its fibers of the same dimension for $X$ Fano or with trivial canonical line bundle and $|L|$ contains integral curves.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective surface over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p> 0$ with $Ω_{X}^{1}$ semistable and $μ(Ω_{X}^{1})>0$. For any semistable (resp. stable) bundle $W$ of rank $r$, we prove that $F_*W$ is semistable (resp. stable) when $p\geq r(r-1)^2+1$.
We show that certain semistable sheaves on the projective plane with linear Hilbert polynomial are cokernels of semistable morphisms of decomposable sheaves. We exhibit certain locally closed subvarieties of moduli spaces of semistable sheaves as quotients modulo nonreductive groups.
We describe new irreducible components of the moduli space of rank $2$ semistable torsion free sheaves on the three-dimensional projective space whose generic point corresponds to non-locally free sheaves whose singular locus is either 0-dimensional or consists of a line plus disjoint points. In particular, we prove that the moduli spaces of semistable sheaves with Chern classes $(c_1,c_2,c_3)=(-1,2n,0)$ and $(c_1,c_2,c_3)=(0,n,0)$ always contain at least one rational irreducible component. As an application, we prove that the number of such components grows as the second Chern class grows, an…
Let $F$ be a torsionfree semistable coherent sheaf on a polarized normal projective variety. We prove that $F$ has a unique maximal locally free subsheaf $V$ such that $F/V$ is torsionfree and $V$ admits a filtration of subbundles for which each successive quotient is stable whose slope is $μ(F)$. We also prove that $F$ has a unique maximal reflexive subsheaf $W$ such that $F/W$ is torsionfree and $W$ admits a filtration of subsheaves for which each successive quotient is a stable reflexive sheaf whose slope is $μ(F)$. We show that these canonical subsheaves behave well with respect to the pul…
Using the notion of a root datum of a reductive group $G$ we propose a tropical analogue of a principal $G$-bundle on a metric graph. We focus on the case $G=\mathrm{GL}_n$, i.e. the case of vector bundles. Here we give a characterization of vector bundles in terms of multidivisors and use this description to prove analogues of the Weil--Riemann--Roch theorem and the Narasimhan--Seshadri correspondence. We proceed by studying the process of tropicalization. In particular, we show that the non-Archimedean skeleton of the moduli space of semistable vector bundles on a Tate curve is isomorphic to…
We propose a definition of Vafa-Witten invariants counting semistable Higgs pairs on a polarised surface. We use virtual localisation applied to Mochizuki/Joyce-Song pairs. For $K_S\le0$ we expect our definition coincides with an alternative definition using weighted Euler characteristics. We prove this for deg $K_S<0$ here, and it is proved for $S$ a K3 surface in \cite{MT}. For K3 surfaces we calculate the invariants in terms of modular forms which generalise and prove conjectures of Vafa and Witten.
We find the sharp bounds on $h^0(F)$ for one-dimensional semistable sheaves $F$ on a projective variety $X$ by using the spectrum of semistable sheaves. The result generalizes the Clifford theorem. When $X$ is the projective plane $\mathbb{P}^2$, we study the stratification of the moduli space by the spectrum of sheaves. We show that the deepest stratum is isomorphic to a subscheme of a relative Hilbert scheme. This provides an example of a family of semistable sheaves having the biggest dimensional global section space.
In this paper, the first of a series of three, we classify holomorphic principal G-bundles over an elliptic curve, where G is a reductive group. We also study the local and global properties of the moduli space of semistable G-bundles. We identify canonical representatives for each S-equivalence class of semistable G-bundles, and study their automorphism groups.
In this paper we study Higgs and co-Higgs $G$-bundles on compact Kähler manifolds $X$. Our main results are: (1) If $X$ is Calabi-Yau, and $(E,\,θ)$ is a semistable Higgs or co-Higgs $G$-bundle on $X$, then the principal $G$-bundle $E$ is semistable. In particular, there is a deformation retract of ${\mathcal M}_H(G)$ onto $\mathcal M(G)$, where $\mathcal M(G)$ is the moduli space of semistable principal $G$-bundles with vanishing rational Chern classes on $X$, and analogously, ${\mathcal M}_H(G)$ is the moduli space of semistable principal Higgs $G$-bundles with vanishing rational Chern class…
We prove a rigidity result for automorphisms of points of certain stacks admitting adequate moduli spaces. It encompasses as special cases variations of the moduli of $G$-bundles on a smooth projective curve for a reductive algebraic group $G$. For example, our result applies to the stack of semistable $G$-bundles, stacks of semistable Hitchin pairs, and stacks of semistable parabolic $G$-bundles. Similar arguments apply to Gieseker semistable $G$-bundles in higher dimensions. We present two applications of the main result. First, we show that in characteristic $0$ every stack of semistable de…
In this paper, we study the geometric invariant theory on algebraic spaces, and construct te moduli spaces of $\mathcal{H}$-semistable sheaves on projective Deligne-Mumford stacks over algebraic spaces $S$. We prove that this moduli space is projective over $S$ as an algebraic space.
