We show that certain semistable sheaves on the projective plane with linear Hilbert polynomial are cokernels of semistable morphisms of decomposable sheaves. We exhibit certain locally closed subvarieties of moduli spaces of semistable sheaves as quotients modulo nonreductive groups.
In this paper (part of the author's PhD thesis), we introduce the notions of semistability and potential semistability of overconvergent F-crystals over an equal characteristic local field. We establish their equivalence with the notions of unipotency and quasi-unipotency given by Crew, and to recast the conjecture that every overconvergent crystal is quasi-unipotent in terms of potential semistability. Consequences, including an extension of de Jong's extension theorem for F-crystals to the logarithmic case, will appear in a subsequent paper.
We present a novel notion of stable objects in a triangulated category. This Postnikov-stability is preserved by equivalences. We show that for the derived category of a projective variety this notion includes the case of semistable sheaves. As one application we compactify a moduli space of stable bundles using genuine complexes via Fourier-Mukai transforms.
For a trivial elliptic fibration $X=C \times S$ with $C$ an elliptic curve and $S$ a projective K3 surface of Picard rank $1$, we study how various notions of stability behave under the Fourier-Mukai autoequivalence $Φ$ on $D^b(X)$, where $Φ$ is induced by the classical Fourier-Mukai autoequivalence on $D^b(C)$. We show that, under some restrictions on Chern classes, Gieseker semistability on coherent sheaves is preserved under $Φ$ when the polarisation is `fiber-like'. Moreover, for more general choices of Chern classes, Gieseker semistability under a `fiber-like' polarisation corresponds to …
We generalize the notion of multi-Gieseker semistability for coherent sheaves, introduced by Greb, Ross, and Toma, to quiver sheaves for a quiver $Q$. We construct coarse moduli spaces for semistable quiver sheaves using a functorial method that realizes these as subschemes of moduli spaces of representations of a twisted quiver, depending on $Q$, with relations. We also show the projectivity of the moduli space in the case when $Q$ has no oriented cycles. Finally, we investigate the parameter dependence of the moduli.
Our aim in this article is to produce new examples of semistable Lazarsfeld- Mukai bundles on smooth projective surfaces $X$ using the notion of parabolic vector bundles. In particular, we associate natural parabolic structures to any rank two (dual) Lazarsfeld-Mukai bundle and study the parabolic stability of these parabolic bundles. We also show that the orbifold bundles on Kawamata coverings of $X$ corresponding to the above parabolic bundles are themselves certain (dual) Lazarsfeld-Mukai bundles. This gives semistable Lazarsfeld-Mukai bundles on Kawamata covers of the projective plane and …
We review the notions of (weak) Hermitian-Yang-Mills structure and approximate Hermitian-Yang-Mills structure for Higgs bundles. Then, we construct the Donaldson functional for Higgs bundles over compact Kähler manifolds and we present some basic properties of it. In particular, we show that its gradient flow can be written in terms of the mean curvature of the Hitchin-Simpson connection. We also study some properties of the solutions of the evolution equation associated with that functional. Next, we study the problem of the existence of approximate Hermitian-Yang-Mills structures and its rel…
K-polystability of a polarised variety is an algebro-geometric notion conjecturally equivalent to the existence of a constant scalar curvature Kähler metric. When a variety is K-unstable, it is expected to admit a "most destabilising" degeneration. In this note we show that if such a degeneration exists, then the limiting scheme is itself relatively K-semistable.
We introduce a notion of K-semistability for Sasakian manifolds. This extends to the irregular case the orbifold K-semistability of Ross-Thomas. Our main result is that a Sasakian manifold with constant scalar curvature is necessarily K-semistable. As an application, we show how one can recover the volume minimization results of Martelli-Sparks-Yau, and the Lichnerowicz obstruction of Gauntlett-Martelli-Sparks-Yau from this point of view.
In this article we study a special class of vector bundles, called tensors. A tensor consists of a vector bundle $E$ over a smooth irreducible projective variety and a morphism of vector bundles $φ$. As for classical vector bundles, there exists a notion of stability for these objects given in terms of filtrations of the vector bundle $E$. The aim of the present paper is to prove that if a destabilizing filtration is "too" long then there exists a shorter subfiltration which destabilizes as well. Moreover, we describe some related combinatorial problems, which arise from the description of a t…
In this paper we extend the notion of Futaki invariant to big and nef classes in such a way that it defines a continuous function on the \K\ cone up to the boundary. We apply this concept to prove that reduced normal crossing singularities are sufficient to check $K$-semistability. A similar improvement on Donaldson's lower bound for Calabi energy is given.
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of any characteristic. Let $X$ be a polarized irreducible smooth projective algebraic variety over $k$. We give criterion for semistability and stability of system of Hodge bundles on $X$. We define notion of generalized opers on $X$, and prove semistability of the Higgs bundle associated to generalized opers. We also show that existence of partial oper structure on a vector bundle $E$ together with a connection $\nabla$ over $X$ implies semistability of the pair $(E, \nabla)$.
We also study some properties of the evolution equation associated to that functional. Next, we study the problem of the existence of approximate Hermitian-Yang-Mills structure and its relation with the algeb…
We study the basic properties of Higgs sheaves over compact Kähler manifolds and we establish some results concerning the notion of semistability; in particular, we show that any extension of semistable Higgs sheaves with equal slopes is semistable. Then, we use the flattening theorem to construct a regularization of any torsion-free Higgs sheaf and we show that it is in fact a Higgs bundle. Using this, we prove that any Hermitian metric on a regularization of a torsion-free Higgs sheaf induces an admissible structure on the Higgs sheaf. Finally, using admissible structures we proved some prop…
Let $X$ be a complex projective manifold. Fix two ample line bundles $H_0$ and $H_1$ on $X$. It is the aim of this note to study the variation of the moduli spaces of Gieseker semistable sheaves for polarizations lying in the cone spanned by $H_0$ and $H_1$. We attempt a new definition of walls which naturally describes the behaviour of Gieseker semistability. By means of an example, we establish the possibility of non-rational walls which is a substantially new phenomenon compared to the surface case. Using the approach of Ellingsrud and Goettsche via parabolic sheaves, we were able to show t…
We give an example of a strongly semistable vector bundle of rank two on the projective plane such that there exist smooth curves of arbitrary high degree with the property that the restriction of the bundle to the curve is not strongly semistable anymore. This shows that a Bogomolov type restriction theorem does not hold for strong semistability in positive characteristic.
Our first result is that a homogeneous form $F$ in $n$ variables is GIT semistable with respect to the natural $SL(n)$-action if and only if the first non-trivial Hilbert point of the associated Milnor algebra is semistable. We also prove that the induced morphism on the GIT quotients is finite, and injective on the locus of stable forms. Our second result is that the associated form of $F$, also known as the Macaulay inverse system of the Milnor algebra of $F$, and which is apolar to the last non-trivial Hilbert point of the Milnor algebra, is GIT semistable whenever $F$ is a smooth form. The…
Let X be a smooth projective complex variety, and let G be an algebraic reductive complex group. We define the notion of principal G-sheaf, that generalises the notion of principal G-bundle. Then we define a notion of semistability, and construct the projective moduli space of semistable principal G-sheaves on X. This is a natural compactification of the moduli space of principal G-bundles. This is the announcement note presented by the second author in the conference held at Catania (11-13 April 2001), dedicated to the 60th birthday of Silvio Greco. Detailed proofs will appear elsewhere.
We provide notions of numerical effectiveness and numerical flatness for Higgs vector bundles on compact Kähler manifolds in terms of fibre metrics. We prove several properties of bundles satisfying such conditions and in particular we show that numerically flat Higgs bundles have vanishing Chern classes, and that they admit filtrations whose quotients are stable flat Higgs bundles. We compare these definitions with those previously given in the case of projective varieties. Finally we study the relations between numerically effectiveness and semistability, establishing semistability criteria …
We give a Miyaoka-type semistability criterion for principal Higgs G-bundles E on complex projective manifolds of any dimension, i.e., we prove that E is semistable and the second Chern class of its adjoint bundle vanishes if and only if certain line bundles, obtained from the characters of the parabolic subgroups of G, are numerically effective. We also give alternative characterizations in terms of a notion of numerical effectiveness of Higgs vector bundles we have recently introduced.
We provide a new proof of the following result: Let $X$ be a variety of finite type over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic 0, let $Z\subset X$ be a proper closed subset. There exists a modification $f:X_1 \rar X$, such that $X_1$ is a quasi-projective nonsingular variety and $Z_1 = f^{-1}(Z)_\red$ is a strict divisor of normal crossings. Needless to say, this theorem is a weak version of Hironaka's well known theorem on resolution of singularities. Our proof has the feature that it builds on two standard techniques of algebraic geometry: semistable reduction for curves, and t…
Given a polarized manifold there are obstructions for asymptotic Chow semistability described as integral invariants. One of them is an obstruction to the existence for the first Chern class of the polarization to admit a constant scalar curvature Kähler (cscK) metric. A natural question is whether or not the other obstructions are linearly dependent on the obstruction to the existence of a cscK metric. The purpose of this paper is to see that this is not the case by exhibiting toric Fano threefolds in which these obstructions span at least two dimension. To see this we show that on toric Fano…
In this text we develop some aspects of Harder-Narasimhan theory, slopes, semistability and canonical filtration, in the setting of combinatorial lattices. Of noticeable importance is the Harder-Narasimhan structure associated to a Galois connection between two lattices. It applies, in particular, to matroids. We then specialize this to linear codes. This could be done from at least three different approaches: using the sphere-packing analogy, or the geometric view, or the Galois connection construction just introduced. A remarkable fact is that these all lead to the same notion of semistabili…
We study Mori fiber spaces over a two-dimensional base which satisfy the semistability assumption. As an application of our technique we give a new proof of the existence of semistable 3-fold flips.
We embed polarised orbifolds with cyclic stabiliser groups into weighted projective space via a weighted form of Kodaira embedding. Dividing by the (non-reductive) automorphisms of weighted projective space then formally gives a moduli space of orbifolds. We show how to express this as a reductive quotient and so a GIT problem, thus defining a notion of stability for orbifolds. We then prove an orbifold version of Donaldson's theorem: the existence of an orbifold Kahler metric of constant scalar curvature implies K-semistability. By extending the notion of slope stability to orbifolds we there…
K-polystability is, on the one hand, conjecturally equivalent to the existence of certain canonical Kähler metrics on polarised varieties, and, on the other hand, conjecturally gives the correct notion to form moduli. We introduce a notion of stability for families of K-polystable varieties, extending the classical notion of slope stability of a bundle, viewed as a family of K-polystable varieties via the associated projectivisation. We conjecture that this is the correct condition for forming moduli of fibrations. Our main result relates this stability condition to Kähler geometry: we prove t…
We introduce the notion of $T$-stability for torsion-free Higgs sheaves as a natural generalization of the notion of $T$-stability for torsion-free coherent sheaves over compact complex manifolds. We prove similar properties to the classical ones for Higgs sheaves. In particular, we show that only saturated flags of torsion-free Higgs sheaves are important in the definition of $T$-stability. Using this, we show that this notion is preserved under dualization and tensor product with an arbitrary Higgs line bundle. Then, we prove that for a torsion-free Higgs sheaf over a compact Kähler manifold…
We study Miyaoka-type semistability criteria for principal Higgs G-bundles E on complex projective manifolds of any dimension. We prove that E has the property of being semistable after pullback to any projective curve if and only if certain line bundles, obtained from some characters of the parabolic subgroups of G, are numerically effective. One also proves that these conditions are met for semistable principal Higgs bundles whose adjoint bundle has vanishing second Chern class. In a second part of the paper, we introduce notions of numerical effectiveness and numerical flatness for principa…
We show the equivalence between two notions of log moduli stacks which appear in literatures. In particular, we generalize M.Olsson's theorem of representation of log algebraic stacks and answer a question posted by him (\cite{Ol4} 3.5.3). As an application, we obtain several fundamental results of algebraic log stacks which resemble to those in algebraic stacks.
Moduli spaces of semistable torsion-free sheaves on a K3 surface $X$ are often holomorphic symplectic varieties, deformation equivalent to a Hilbert scheme parametrizing zero-dimensional subschemes of $X$. In fact this should hold whenever semistability is equivalent to stability. In this paper we study a typical "opposite" case, i.e. the moduli space $M_c$ of semistable rank-two torsion-free sheaves on $X$ with trivial determinant and second Chern class equal to an even number $c$. The moduli space $M_c$ always contains points corresponding to strictly semistable sheaves. If $c$ is at least 4…
We show that a continuous function on the analytification of a smooth proper algebraic curve over a non-archimedean field is subharmonic in the sense of Thuillier if and only if it is psh, i.e. subharmonic in the sense of Chambert-Loir and Ducros. This equivalence implies that the property psh for continuous functions is stable under pullback with respect to morphisms of curves. Furthermore, we prove an analogue of the monotone regularization theorem on the analytification of the projective line and Mumford curves using this equivalence.
