Restricting Higgs bundles to curves

We determine some classes of varieties X - that include the varieties with numerically effective tangent bundle - satisfying the following property: if E is a Higgs bundle such that f*E is semistable for any morphism f from a smooth projective curve to X, then E is slope semistable and the discriminant of E is zero in H4(X,R). We also characterize some classes of varieties such that the underlying vector bundle of a slope semistable Higgs bundle is always slope semistable.

On the period map for prime Fano threefolds of degree 10

We prove that the deformations of a smooth complex Fano threefold X with Picard number 1, index 1, and degree 10, are unobstructed. The differential of the period map has two-dimensional kernel. We construct two two-dimensional components of the fiber of the period map through X: one is isomorphic to the variety of conics in X, modulo an involution, another is birationally isomorphic to a moduli space of semistable rank-2 torsion-free sheaves on X, modulo an involution. Affine lines in the complement of a smooth plane conic

We classify closed curves isomorphic to the affine line in the complement of a smooth rational projective plane conic Q. Over a field of characteristic zero, we show that up to the action of the subgroup of the Cremona group of the plane consisting of birational endomorphisms restricting to biregular auto-morphisms outside Q, there are exactly two such lines: the restriction of a smooth conic osculating Q at a rational point and the restriction of the tangent line to Q at a rational point. Pfaffian Lines and Vector Bundles on Fano Threefolds of Genus 8

Let X be a general complex Fano threefold of genus 8. We prove that the moduli space of rank two semistable sheaves on X with Chern numbers c_1=1, c_2=6 and c_3=0 is isomorphic to the Fano surface F(X) of conics on X. Inside F(X), the non-locally free sheaves are parameterized by a smooth curve of genus 26 isomorphic to the base of the family of lines on X.

Hecke Correspondence, Stable Maps and the Kirwan Desingularization

We prove that the moduli space of stable maps of degree 2 to the moduli space of rank 2 stable bundles of fixed determinant O(-x) over a smooth projective curve of genus g>2 has two irre- ducible components which intersect transversely. One of them is Kir- wan's partial desingularization of the moduli space of rank 2 semistable bundles with determinant isomorphic to O(y-x) for some y in X. The other component is the partial desingularization of PHom(sl(2)^*;W)//PGL(2) for a vector bundle W of rank g over the Jacobian of X.
