In this paper we study the longstanding conjecture of whether there exists a noninner automorphism of order $p$ for a finite non-abelian $p$-group. We prove that if $G$ is a finite non-abelian $p$-group such that $G/Z(G)$ is powerful then $G$ has a noninner automorphism of order $p$ leaving either $Φ(G)$ or $Ω_1(Z(G))$ elementwise fixed. We also recall a connection between the conjecture and a cohomological problem and we give an alternative proof of the latter result for odd $p$, by showing that the Tate cohomology $H^n(G/N,Z(N))\not=0$ for all $n\geq 0$, where $G$ is a finite $p$-group, $p$ is odd, $G/Z(G)$ is $p$-central (i.e., elements of order $p$ are central) and $N\lhd G$ with $G/N$ non-cyclic.
In this note, the existence of noninner automorphisms of order 2 for finite 2-groups of coclass 2 is proved. Combining our result with a recent one due to Y. Guerboussa and M. Reguiat (see arXiv:1301.0085), we prove that every finite $p$-group of coclass 2 has a noninner automorphism of order $p$ leaving the center elementwise fixed.
We prove that for any prime number $p$, every finite non-abelian $p$-group $G$ of class 2 has a noninner automorphism of order $p$ leaving either the Frattini subgroup $Φ(G)$ or $Ω_1(Z(G))$ elementwise fixed.
A longstanding conjecture asserts that every non-abelian finite $p$-group $G$ admits a non-inner automorphism of order $p$. The conjecture is valid for finite $p$-groups of class 2. Here, we prove every finite non-abelian $p$-group $G$ of class 3 with $p>2$ has a noninner automorphism of order $p$ leaving $Φ(G)$ elementwise fixed. We also prove that if $G$ is a finite 2-group of class 3 which cannot be generated by 4 elements, then $G$ has a non-inner automorphism of order 2 leaving $Φ(G)$ elementwise fixed. We also prove that the latter conclusion holds for finite 2-groups $G$ of class 3 such…
In this paper we study the structure of the rational cohomology groups of the IA-automorphism group $\mathrm{IA}_3$ of a free group of rank three by using combinatorial group theory and representation theory. In particular, we detect non-trivial irreducible component in the second cohomology group of $\mathrm{IA}_3$, which does not contained in the image of the cup product map of the first cohomology groups. We also show that the image of the triple cup product map of the first cohomology groups in the third cohomology group is trivial. As a corollary, we obtain that the fourth term of the low…
We compute a twisted first cohomology group of the automorphism group of a free group with coefficients in the abelianization $V$ of the IA-automorphism group of a free group. In particular, we show that it is generated by two crossed homomorphisms constructed with the Magnus representation and the Magnus expansion due to Morita and Kawazumi respectively. As a corollary, we see that the first Johnson homomorphism does not extend to the automorphism group of a free group as a crossed homomorphism for the rank of the free group is greater than 4.
In this paper we describe a method for producing elements in the mod p cohomology of a discrete group of finite cohomological dimension. This provides a purely algebraic formulation of the theory of special cycles.
The second cohomology group of a left skew brace with coefficients in a trivial left brace with non-trivial actions is defined, its connection with extensions of a left skew brace by a trivial braces is established and a Wells' like exact sequence relating the second cohomology group with inducible automorphisms of an extension of left skew braces is constructed.
It is not known whether or not the stable rational cohomology groups $\tilde H^*(Aut(F_\infty);\Q)$ always vanish. We show that either the rational cohomology does not vanish in certain dimensions, or the integral cohomology of a moduli space of pointed graphs does not stabilize in certain other dimensions. Similar results are stated for groups of outer automorphisms. This yields that $H^5(\hat Q_m; \mathbb{Z})$, $H^6(\hat Q_m; \mathbb{Z})$, and $H^5(Q_m; \mathbb{Z})$ never stabilize as $m \to \infty$, where the moduli spaces $\hat Q_m$ and $Q_m$ are the quotients of the spines $\hat X_m$ and …
The paper establishes new relationship between cohomology, extensions and automorphisms of quandles. We derive a four term exact sequence relating quandle 1-cocycles, second quandle cohomology and certain group of automorphisms of an abelian extension of quandles. A non-abelian counterpart of this sequence involving dynamical cohomology classes is also established, and some applications to lifting of quandle automorphisms are given. Viewing the construction of the conjugation, the core and the generalised Alexander quandle of a group as an adjoint functor of some appropriate functor from the c…
Let 1-> H -> G _> Q -> 1 be an exact sequence of groups. In the paper of R. Oliver and J. Ventura, TAMS,362(2009), the following exact sequence was developed for centric extensions, i.e the centralizer of H in G is contained in H, 0-> H^1(Q,zH) -> Aut(G,H) -> N_{Out H}(F Q)/F Q -> H^2(Q,zH) where Aut(G,H) are the automorphisms of G which restrict to an automorphism of H, F:Q -> Out H is the outer action determined by the extension, zH is the center of H with Q-action coming from F and N_{Out H} the normalizer. It is the aim of this paper to generalize the above sequence to arbitrary extensions…
We consider L^p-cohomology of reflexive Banach spaces and give a spectral condition implying the vanishing of 1-cohomology with coefficients in uniformly bounded representations on a Hilbert space.
We characterize those Lie groups, and algebraic groups over a local field of characteristic zero, whose first reduced L^p-cohomology is zero for all p>1, extending a result of Pansu. As an application, we obtain a description of Gromov-hyperbolic groups among those groups. In particular we prove that any non-elementary Gromov-hyperbolic algebraic group over a non-Archimedean local field of zero characteristic is quasi-isometric to a 3-regular tree. We also extend the study to semidirect products of a general locally compact group by a cyclic group acting by contracting automorphisms.
We study the (virtual) indicability of the automorphism group $Aut(A_Γ)$ of the right-angled Artin group $A_Γ$ associated to a simplicial graph $Γ$. First, we identify two conditions -- denoted (B1) and (B2) -- on $Γ$ which together imply that $H^1(G, Z)=0$ for certain finite-index subgroups $G<Aut(A_Γ)$. On the other hand we will show that (B2) is equivalent to the matrix group ${\mathcal H} = {\rm Im}(Aut(A_Γ) \to Aut(H_1(A_Γ))) <GL(n,Z)$ not being virtually indicable, and also to $\mathcal H$ having Kazhdan's property (T). As a consequence, $Aut(A_Γ)$ virtually surjects onto $Z$ whenever $Γ…
We study the cohomology of Aut(F_n) and Out(F_n) with coefficients in the modules \wedge^q H, \wedge H^*, Sym^q H or Sym^q H^*, where H is the Out(F_n)-module obtained by abelianising the free group F_n. For reasons which are not conceptually clear, taking coefficients in H and its related modules behaves in a far less trivial way than taking coefficients in H^* and its related modules. Based on a conjectural homology stability theorem for spaces of graphs labeled by a simply connected background space, we give a stable integral calculation of these groups in low degrees, and modulo a further …
We classify the nonsplit extensions of elementary abelian $p$-groups by $PSL_2(q)$, with odd $p$ dividing $q-1$, for an irreducible induced action, calculate the relevant low-dimensional cohomology groups, and describe the automorphism groups of such extensions.
The Johnson filtration of the automorphism group of a free group is composed of those automorphisms which act trivially on nilpotent quotients of the free group. We compute cohomology classes as follows: (i) we analyze analogous classes for a subgroup of the pure symmetric automorphism group of a free group, and (ii) we analyze features of these classes which are preserved by the Johnson homomorphism. One consequence is that the ranks of the cohomology groups in any fixed dimension between 1 and n-1 increase without bound for terms deep in the Johnson filtraton.
We examine the palindromic automorphism group $ΠA(F_n)$ of a free group $F_n$, a group first defined by Collins which is related to hyperelliptic involutions of mapping class groups, congruence subgroups of $SL_n(\Z)$, and symmetric automorphism groups of free groups. Cohomological properties of the group are explored by looking at a contractible space on which $ΠA(F_n)$ acts properly with finite quotient. Our results answer some conjectures of Collins and provide a few striking results about the cohomology of $ΠA(F_n)$, such as that its rational cohomology is zero at the vcd.
We determine the structure of the first resonance variety of the cohomology ring of the group of automorphisms of a finitely generated free group which act by conjugation on a given basis.
We study H^*(P), the mod p cohomology of a finite p--group P, viewed as an Out(P)--module. In particular, we study the conjecture, first considered by Martino and Priddy, that, if e_S in Z/p[Out(P)] is a primitive idempotent associated to an irreducible Z/p[Out(P)]--module S, then the Krull dimension of e_SH^*(P) equals the rank of P. The rank is an upper bound by Quillen's work, and the conjecture can be viewed as the statement that every irreducible Z/p[Out(P)]--module occurs as a composition factor in H^*(P) with similar frequency. In summary, our results are as follows. A strong form of th…
For a partition $\underlineλ = (λ_{1}^{ρ_1}>λ_{2}^{ρ_2}>λ_{3}^{ρ_3}>\ldots>λ_{k}^{ρ_k})$ and its associated finite abelian $p$-group $\mathcal{A}_{\underlineλ}=\underset{i=1}{\overset{k}{\oplus}} (\mathbb{Z}/p^{λ_i}\mathbb{Z})^{ρ_i}$, where $p$ is a prime, we consider two actions of its automorphism group $\mathcal{G}_{\underlineλ}$ on $\mathcal{A}_{\underlineλ}$. The first action is the natural action $g\bullet a=\ ^ga$ for all $g\in\mathcal{G}_{\underlineλ}$ and $a\in\mathcal{A}_{\underlineλ}$ where the action map is denoted by $Λ_1=Id_{\mathcal{G}_{\underlineλ}}:\mathcal{G}_{\underlineλ}\lo…
We describe the structure of the algebraic group of automorphisms of all simple finite dimensional Lie superalgebras. Using this and étale cohomology considerations, we list all different isomorphism classes of the corresponding twisted loop superalgebras.
Given a Lie group $G$ with finitely many components and a compact Lie group A which acts on $G$ by automorphisms, we prove that there always exists an A-invariant maximal compact subgroup K of G, and that for every such K, the natural map $H^1(A,K)\to H^1(A,G)$ is bijective. This generalizes a classical result of Serre [6] and a recent result in [1].
We establish new results and introduce new methods in the theory of measurable orbit equivalence, using bounded cohomology of group representations. Our rigidity statements hold for a wide (uncountable) class of groups arising from negative curvature geometry. Amongst our applications are (a) measurable Mostow-type rigidity theorems for products of negatively curved groups; (b) prime factorization results for measure equivalence; (c) superrigidity for orbit equivalence; (d) the first examples of continua of type II_1 equivalence relations with trivial outer automorphism group that are mutually…
Let PSigma_n denote the group that can be thought of either as the group of motions of the trivial n-component link or the group of symmetric automorphisms of a free group of rank n. The integral cohomology ring of PSigma_n is determined, establishing a conjecture of Brownstein and Lee.
Given a p-block B of a finite group with defect group P and fusion system F on P we show that the rank of the group P/foc(F) is invariant under stable equivalences of Morita type. The main ingredients are the star-construction, due to Broue and Puig, a theorem of Weiss on linear source modules, arguments of Hertweck and Kimmerle applying Weiss' theorem to blocks, and connections with integrable derivations in the Hochschild cohomology of block algebras.
We present and discuss some open problems formulated by participants of the International Workshop "Knots, Braids, and Auto\-mor\-phism Groups" held in Novosibirsk, 2014. Problems are related to palindromic and commutator widths of groups; properties of Brunnian braids and two-colored braids, corresponding to an amalgamation of groups; extreme properties of hyperbolic 3-orbifold groups, relations between inner and quasi-inner automorphisms of groups; and Staic's construction of symmetric cohomology of groups.
The question of existence of outer automorphisms of a simple algebraic group $G$ arises naturally both when working with the Galois cohomology of $G$ and as an example of the algebro-geometric problem of determining which connected components of the automorphism group of $G$ have rational points. The existence question remains open only for four types of groups, and we settle one of the remaining cases, type $^3D_4$. The key to the proof is a Skolem-Noether theorem for cubic etale subalgebras of Albert algebras which is of independent interest. Necessary and sufficient conditions for a simply …
We calculate the irreducible decomposition of the images of the Johnson homomorphisms of the automorphism group of a free group and a free metabelian group. We determine the abelianization of the derivation algebra of the Chen Lie algebra as a Lie algebra, and show that the abelianizaton is given by the degree one part and the Morita's trace maps. We also consider twisted cohomology groups of the automorphism group of a free nilpotent group. We show that the trace map for the exterior product defines a non-trivial twisted second cohomology class of it.
In this paper we first show that many braid groups of low genus surfaces have their centers as direct factors. We then give a description of centralizers and normalizers of prime order elements in pure mapping class groups of surfaces with spherical quotients using automorphism groups of fundamental groups of the quotient surfaces. As an application, we use these to show that the $p$-primary part of the Farrell cohomology groups of certain mapping class groups are elementary abelian groups. At the end we compute the $p$-primary part of the Farrell cohomology of a few pure mapping class groups.
Let F_n be the free group on n generators, and PΣ_n be the group of automorphisms of F_n which send each generator to a conjugate of itself. Let K_n be the kernel of the homomorphism from PΣ_n to PΣ_{n-1} induced by mapping one of the free group generators to the identity. We show that K_n has cohomological dimension n-1, and that the ith cohomology groups are infinitely generated for all i between 2 and n-1. It follows that K_n is not finitely presentable for n>2.
This is a study of algebras with involution that become isomorphic over a separable closure of the base field to a tensor product of two composition algebras. We classify these algebras, provide criteria for isomorphism and isotopy, and determine their automorphism groups, structure groups, and norm-similitude groups. The most interesting cases of these algebras are the $64$-dimensional bi-octonion algebras, on which groups of absolute type $(G_2 \times G_2)\rtimes \mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$ and $\mathbf{Spin}_{14}$ act faithfully by automorphisms and norm-preserving isotopies, respectively. We c…
In this work we compute the first integral cohomology of the pure mapping class group of a non-orientable surface of infinite topological type and genus at least 3. To this purpose, we also prove several other results already known for orientable surfaces such as the existence of an Alexander method, the fact that the mapping class group is isomorphic to the automorphism group of the curve graph along with the topological rigidity of the curve graph, and the structure of the pure mapping class group as both a Polish group and a semi-direct product.
Let F_n = <x_1,...,x_n> denote the free group with generators {x_1,...,x_n}. Nielsen and Magnus described generators for the kernel of the canonical epimorphism from the automorphism group of F_n to the general linear group over the integers. In particular among them are the automorphisms chi_{k,i} which conjugate the generator x_k by the generator x_i leaving the x_j fixed for j not k. A computation of the cohomology ring as well as the Lie algebra obtained from the descending central series of the group generated by chi_{k,i} for i<k is given here. Partial results are obtained for the group …
We provide a unified and self-contained treatment of several of the recent uniqueness theorems for the group measure space decomposition of a II_1 factor. We single out a large class of groups Γ, characterized by a one-cohomology property, and prove that for every free ergodic probability measure preserving action of Γthe associated II_1 factor has a unique group measure space Cartan subalgebra up to unitary conjugacy. Our methods follow closely a recent article of Chifan-Peterson, but we replace the usage of Peterson's unbounded derivations by Thomas Sinclair's dilation into a one-parameter g…
Let p and l be two distinct prime numbers and let G be a group. We study the asymptotic behaviour of the mod-l Betti numbers in p-adic analytic towers of finite index subgroups. If X is a finite l-group of automorphisms of G, our main theorem allows to lift lower bounds for the mod-l cohomology growth in the fixed point group G^X to lower bounds for the growth in G. We give applications to S-arithmetic groups and we also obtain a similar result for cohomology with rational coefficients.
