We deform the recently proposed holographic duality between the ABJM N=6 Chern-Simons-matter theory and type IIA string theory in AdS4xCP3. We add a non-zero Romans mass F_0, whose dual we identify as the sum of the Chern-Simons levels for the two gauge groups. One can naturally identify four different theories, with different amounts of supersymmetry and of flavor symmetry.
We show how to produce algorithmically gravity solutions in massive IIA (as infinitesimal first order perturbations in the Romans mass parameter) dual to assigned conformal field theories. We illustrate the procedure on a family of Chern--Simons--matter conformal field theories that we recently obtained from the N=6 theory by waiving the condition that the levels sum up to zero.
From the underlying non-linear realisation we compute the complete E11 invariant equations of motion in eleven dimensions, at the linearised level, up to and including level four in the fields. Thus we include the metric, the three and six forms, the dual graviton and three fields at level four. The fields are linked by a set of duality equations, which are first order in derivatives and transform into each other under the E11 symmetries. From these duality relations we deduce second order equations of motion, including those for the usual supergravity fields. As a result the on-shell degrees …
We study five-dimensional superconformal field theories and their holographic dual, matter-coupled Romans supergravity. On the one hand, some recently derived formulae allow us to extract the central charges from deformations of the supersymmetric five-sphere partition function, whose large N expansion can be computed using matrix model techniques. On the other hand, the conformal and flavor central charges can be extracted from the six-dimensional supergravity action, by carefully analyzing its embedding into type I' string theory. The results match on the two sides of the holographic duality…
We study Euclidean Romans supergravity in six dimensions with a non-trivial Abelian R-symmetry gauge field. We show that supersymmetric solutions are in one-to-one correspondence with solutions to a set of differential constraints on an SU(2) structure. As an application of our results we (i) show that this structure reduces at a conformal boundary to the five-dimensional rigid supersymmetric geometry previously studied by the authors, (ii) find a general expression for the holographic dual of the VEV of a BPS Wilson loop, matching an exact field theory computation, (iii) construct holographic…
We introduce QP manifolds that capture the generalised geometry of type IIA string backgrounds with Ramond-Ramond fluxes and Romans mass. Each of these is associated to a BPS brane in type IIA: a D2, D4, or NS5-brane. We explain how these probe branes are related to their associated QP-manifolds via the AKSZ topological field theory construction and the recent brane phase space construction. M-theory/type IIA duality is realised on the QP-manifold side as symplectic reduction along the M-theory circle (for branes that do not wrap it); this always produces IIA QP-manifolds with vanishing Romans…
We reconsider a one-parameter class of known solutions of the circle compactification of Romans six-dimensional half-maximal supergravity. The gauge-theory duals of these solutions are confining four-dimensional field theories. Their UV completions consist of the compactification on a circle of a higher-dimensional field theory that is flowing between two fixed points in five dimensions. We systematically study the bosonic fluctuations of the supergravity theory, corresponding to the bosonic glueballs of the dual field theory. We perform numerically the calculation of the spectrum of excitatio…
We construct the gravity duals of large N supersymmetric gauge theories defined on squashed five-spheres with SU(3) x U(1) symmetry. These five-sphere backgrounds are continuously connected to the round sphere, and we find a one-parameter family of 3/4 BPS deformations and a two-parameter family of (generically) 1/4 BPS deformations. The gravity duals are constructed in Euclidean Romans F(4) gauged supergravity in six dimensions, and uplift to massive type IIA supergravity. We holographically renormalize the Romans theory, and use our general result to compute the renormalized on-shell actions…
We clarify the higher-dimensional origin of a class of dyonic gaugings of $D=4$ ${\cal N}=8$ supergravity recently discovered, when the gauge group is chosen to be ISO(7). This dyonically-gauged maximal supergravity arises from consistent truncation of massive IIA supergravity on $S^6$, and its magnetic coupling constant descends directly from the Romans mass. The critical points of the supergravity uplift to new AdS$_4$ massive type IIA vacua. We identify the corresponding CFT$_3$ duals as super-Chern-Simons-matter theories with simple gauge group SU$(N)$, with level $k$ given by the Romans m…
We present the gravity dual of large N supersymmetric gauge theories on a squashed five-sphere. The one-parameter family of solutions is constructed in Euclidean Romans F(4) gauged supergravity in six dimensions, and uplifts to massive type IIA supergravity. By renormalizing the theory with appropriate counterterms we evaluate the renormalized on-shell action for the solutions. We also evaluate the large N limit of the gauge theory partition function, and find precise agreement.
We find explicit AdS4 solutions of massive type IIA with N=2 supersymmetry obtained deforming with a Roman mass the type IIA supersymmetric reduction of the M theory background AdS4 times M111. The family of solutions have SU(3) times SU(3) structure and isometry SU(3) times U(1)^2. They are conjectured to be dual to three-dimensional N=2 Chern-Simons theories with generic Chern-Simons couplings and gauge group ranks.
We compute the supersymmetric Renyi entropy across an entangling three-sphere for five-dimensional superconformal field theories using localization. For a class of USp(2N) gauge theories we construct a holographic dual 1/2 BPS black hole solution of Euclidean Romans F(4) supergravity. The large N limit of the gauge theory results agree perfectly with the supergravity computations.
We construct supergravity solutions dual to twisted field theories that are the worldvolume theories of D4-branes wrapped on 2, 3-cycles, and NS-fivebranes on 3-cycles. We first obtain the solutions for the Romans' six-dimensional gauged supergravity theories and then up-lift them to ten dimensions. In particular, we find solutions for field configurations with either non-Abelian fields or B-fields being excited. One of these solutions, in the massless case, is up-lifted to the massless type IIA string theory. This is the first example of such a kind. The cases studied provide new examples of …
We study the SO(4)-symmetric solution of the five-dimensional SU(2) x U(1) gauged N=4 supergravity theory obtained in [hep-th/0101202]. This solution contains purely magnetic non-Abelian and electric Abelian fields. It can be interpreted as a reduction of seven-dimensional gauged supergravity on a torus, which comes from type IIB supergravity on S^3. We also show how to obtain that solution from six-dimensional Romans' theory on a circle. We then up-lift the solution to massless type IIA supergravity. The dual gauge field theory is twisted and is defined on the worldvolume of a NS-fivebrane wr…
We consider non-Abelian T-duality on N=1 supergravity backgrounds possessing well understood field theory duals. For the case of D3-branes at the tip of the conifold, we dualise along an SU(2) isometry. The result is a type-IIA geometry whose lift to M-theory is of the type recently proposed by Bah et. al. as the dual to certain N=1 SCFT quivers produced by M5-branes wrapping a Riemann surface. In the non-conformal cases we find smooth duals in massive IIA supergravity with a Romans mass naturally quantised. We initiate the interpretation of these geometries in the context of the AdS/CFT corre…
We propose a duality for N=2 d=3 Chern-Simons gauge theories with orthogonal gauge groups and matter in the vector representation. This duality generalizes level-rank duality for pure Chern-Simons gauge theories with orthogonal gauge groups and is reminiscent of Seiberg duality in four dimensions. We perform extensive checks by comparing partition functions of theories related by dualities. We also determine the conformal dimensions of fields using Z-extremization.
There exists a well-known duality between the Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory and the self-dual massive model in 2+1 dimensions. This dual description has been extended to topologically massive gauge theories (TMGT) in any dimension. This Letter introduces an unconventional approach to the construction of this type of duality through a reparametrisation of the master theory action. The dual action thereby obtained preserves the same gauge symmetry structure as the original theory. Furthermore, the dual action is factorised into a propagating sector of massive gauge invariant variables and a sector…
Duality in supersymmetric SU(N) gauge theory with a symmetric tensor is studied using the technique of deconfining and Seiberg's duality. By construction the gauge group of the dual theory necessarily becomes a product group. In order to check the duality, several nontrivial consistency conditions are examined. In particular we find that by deforming along a flat direction, the duality flows to the Seiberg's duality of SO(N) gauge theory.
Dynamical origin of duality between gauge theory and gravity is studied using the dual transformation and the formation of graviton as a collective excitation of dual gauge bosons. In this manner, electric-magnetic duality in gauge theory is reduced to the duality between gauge theory and gravity.
In this letter we implement a recently proposed {\it spacetime duality} approach to dualize a two dimensional, Abelian, gauge field theory, which has no dual version under $p$--duality. Our result suggests that spacetime duality spans a new, wider, class of dual theories, which cannot be related one to another by $p$--duality transformations.
In this paper we study U(1) gauge transformations on the space-time coordinates and on the background fields $g_{μν}$ and $ϕ$. For some special gauge functions, gauged coordinates and gauged U(1) field are equivalent to the rotated coordinates and rotated gauge field. We find gauge transformations that are symmetries of the string action. Also we obtain general $T$-duality transformations for the background fields. For special background fields this duality is equivalent to a gauge transformation.
A dual action is obtained for a general non-abelian and non-supersymmetric gauge theory at the classical level. The construction follows steps similar to those used in pure abelian gauge theory. As an example we study the spontaneously broken SO(3) gauge theory and show that the electric and the magnetic fields get interchanged in the dual theory.
These lectures are an introduction to gauge/gravity duality, presented at TASI 2010. The first three sections present the basics, focusing on $AdS_5 \times S^5$. The last section surveys a variety of ways to generate duals of reduced symmetry.
Duality groups as (spontaneously broken) gauge symmetries for toroidal backgrounds, and their role in ($\infty$-dimensional) underlying string gauge algebras are reviewed. For curved backgrounds, it is shown that there is a duality in the moduli space of WZNW sigma-models, that can be interpreted as a broken gauge symmetry. In particular, this duality relates the backgrounds corresponding to axially gauged abelian cosets, $G/U(1)_a$, to vectorially gauged abelian cosets, $G/U(1)_v$. Finally, topology change in the moduli space of WZNW sigma-models is discussed.
T-duality has been shown to arise from a gauge symmetry in some string theories. However, in the case of \IIA\ compactified on a circle, it is not possible to show that this is the case. This situation is rather uncomfortable since string string duality suggests that all T-dualities should arise from a gauge symmetry. Here we show that the T-duality of \IIA\ compactified on a circle arises from the reparametrization of the supermembrane. Then we show how this reparametrization can be understood in terms of a gauge symmetry of the supermembrane, thus allowing to connect T-duality in \II\ to a g…
We examine several aspects of S-duality of four-dimensional noncommutative gauge theory. By making duality transformation explicit, we find that S-dual of noncommutative gauge theory is defined in terms of dual noncommutative deformation. In `magnetic' noncommutative U(1) gauge theory, we show that, in addition to gauge bosons, open D-strings constitute important low-energy excitations: noncritical open D-strings. Upon S-duality, they are mapped to noncritical open F-strings. We propose that, in dual `electric' noncommutative U(1) gauge theory, the latters are identified with gauge-invariant, …
In this paper we investigate N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories with a product gauge group. By using smoothly confining dynamics, we can find new dualities which include higher-rank tensor fields, and in which the dual gauge group is simple, not a product. Some of them are dualities between chiral and non-chiral gauge theories. We also discuss some applications to dynamical supersymmetry breaking phenomena and new confining theories with a tree-level superpotential.
We suggest IR-dual descriptions for d=3 N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories with gauge groups USp(2N_c) and U(N_c) and matter in the fundamental representation. We relate this duality to the IR duality of d=4 N=1 SQCD theories, and in one case also to mirror symmetry.
Starting from a generalization of a recent result on self-duality we systematically analyze self-dual models. We find a criterion to judge whether a given model is self-dual or not. With this tool we construct some new self-dual pairs, focussing on examples with exceptional gauge groups.
We study the Aharony duality for three dimensional $\mathcal N=2$ supersymmetric gauge theories for orthogonal gauge groups with matters in vector representation. We provide the evidence for the duality by working out the partition function on $S^3$ and the superconformal index, which show perfect agreement.
We study soliton gauge states in the spectrum of bosonic string compatified on torus. The enhenced Kac-Moody gauge symmetry, and thus T-duality, is shown to be related to the existence of these soliton gauge states in some moduli points.
We study the significance of T-duality in the context of the gravitational description of gauge theories. We found that T-duality relates the deferents points of the moduli of a given gauge theory always far from the conformal fixed point. Also the described gauge theories seems to flow naturally to the able conformal points, those that naturally saturate all the possible known examples of near horizon geometries. Supersymmetry properties and T-duality breaking of it are discuss.
We study deformations of dualities in finite N=2 supersymmetric QCD. Adding mass terms for some quarks and the adjoint matter to the finite N=2 theory, which is known to have dual descriptions, the correspondence of gauge invariant operators between the original and dual theory is deformed. As a result, we naturally obtain N.Seiberg's N=1 duality. Furthermore, we discuss the origin of the meson and superpotential in the dual theory. This approach can be applied to SU(N), SO(N), and USp(2N) gauge theories, and we analyze all these cases.
In this work, we study the implications of the existence of a gauge condensate to the mechanism of duality, a method based on the existence of these condensates is presented and applied to the study of the dual equivalence between self-dual (SD) and topologically massive Yang-Mills (TMYM) models.
The partition functions of refined topological strings(A-models) are computed, which give rise to the circle-compactified five-dimensional supersymmetric linear quiver gauge theories in generic (not necessarily self-dual) Omega backgrounds. Based on the slicing independence conjecture of refined topological string partition functions, it is demonstrated explicitly that the duality exists between $SU(N)^{M-1}$ and $SU(M)^{N-1}$ supersymmetric linear quiver gauge theories, even in generic Omega backgrounds. It is found that the relations between string moduli and gauge moduli are deformed from t…
For non-Abelian tensor gauge fields of the lower rank we have found an alternative expression for the field strength tensors, which transform homogeneously with respect to the complementary gauge transformations and allow us to construct the dual Lagrangian.
We present a large set of new self-dual N=1 SUSY gauge theories. Examples include SU(N) theories with tensors and SO(N) theories with spinors. Using these dualities as starting points, new non-trivial duals can be derived by higgsing the gauge group or by integrating out matter. General lessons that can be learned from these duals are: ``accidental" infrared symmetries play an important role in duality, many theories have more than one ``dual", and there seems to be no simple organizing pattern which relates duals of theories with different number of flavors.
We start by describing two of the main proposals for duality in Abelian gauge theories, namely $F$(ield strength)-duality approach and the $S$% -duality formalism. We then discuss how $F$-duality and $S$-duality can be applied to the case of linearized gravity. By emphasizing the similarities and differences between these two type of dualities we explore the possibility of combining them in just one duality formalism.
In this communication, based on our paper http://arxiv.org/abs/1409.4186, we discuss a way of enhancing Gauge/Gravity Duality and response of a dual strongly coupled medium on placing the inhomogeneity on the gravity side.
We study the equivalence/duality between various non-commutative gauge models at the classical and quantum level. The duality is realised by a linear Seiberg-Witten-like map. The infinitesimal form of this map is analysed in more details.
We reexamine the N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories with product gauge groups by adding the mass terms and the quartic terms for the flavors: two gauge group theory with fundamentals, bifundamentals and adjoints, three gauge group theory with fundamentals and bifundamentals, and their orientifold 4-plane generalizations. By moving the branes appropriately, we obtain the corresponding dual gauge theories. By analyzing the dual superpotentials, we present the type IIA nonsupersymmetric meta-stable brane configurations.
We examine the electric-magnetic duality for a U(1) gauge theory on a general 4-manifold. The partition function for such a theory transforms as a modular form of specific weight. However, in the canonical approach, we show that S-duality, like T-duality, is generated by a canonical transformation leading to a modular invariant partition function.
Using D-brane techniques, we compute the spectrum of stable BPS states in N=4 supersymmetric gauge theory, and find it is consistent with Montonen-Olive duality.
Dual field theory realisations are given for linearised gravity in terms of gauge fields in exotic representations of the Lorentz group. The field equations and dual representations are discussed for a wide class of higher spin gauge fields. For non-linear Einstein gravity, such transformations can be implemented locally in light-cone gauge, or partially implemented in the presence of a Killing vector. Sources and the relation to Kaluza-Klein monopoles are discussed.
We discuss gauge fields on tori in diverse dimensions, mainly in two and four dimensions. We construct various explicit gauge fields which have some topological charges and find the Dirac zero modes in the background of the gauge fields. By using the zero mode, we give new gauge fields on the dual torus, which is a gauge theoretical description of T-duality transformation of the corresponding D-brane systems including DDbar systems. From the transformation, we can easily see the duality expected from the index theorem. It is also mentioned that, for each topological charges, the corresponding …
A generalized gauge invariant Ising model on random surfaces with non-trivial topology is proposed and investigated with the dual transformation. It is proved that the model is self-dual in case of a self-dual lattice. In special cases the model reduces to the known solvable Ising-type models.
We consider the N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories with product gauge groups. The two kinds of D6-branes in the electric theory are both displaced and rotated respectively where these deformations are interpreted as the mass terms and quartic terms for the two kinds of flavors. Then we apply the Seiberg dual to the whole gauge group factors by moving the branes and obtain the corresponding dual gauge theories. By analyzing the magnetic superpotentials consisting of an interaction term between a magnetic meson field and dual matters as well as the above deformations for each gauge group, we pres…
We present more examples of dual N=1 SUSY gauge theories. This set of theories is connected by flows to both Seiberg's and Kutasov's dual theories. This provides a unifying picture of the various dual theories. We investigate the dual theories, their flat directions and mass perturbations.
Gauge field configuration for a magnetic monopole and its dual configuration are studied in SU(2) gauge theory. We present a relation between the monopole field and its dual field. Since these fields can become massive, their massive Lagrangians are derived. In the dual case, an additional term appears. We show this term is necessary to produce a linear potential between a monopole charge and an antimonopole charge.
For non-Abelian tensor gauge fields we have found an alternative form of duality transformation, which has the property that the direct and the inverse transformations coincide. This duality transformation has the desired property that the direct and the inverse transformations map Lagrangian forms into each other.
We show that dualization of Stueckelberg-like massive gauge theories and $B\wedge F$ models, follows form a general p-dualization of interacting theories in d spacetime dimensions. This is achieved by a particular choice of the external current.
We point out that for N=4 gauge theories with exceptional gauge groups G_2 and F_4 the S-duality transformation acts on the moduli space by a nontrivial involution. We note that the duality groups of these theories are the Hecke groups with elliptic elements of order six and four, respectively. These groups extend certain subgroups of SL(2,Z) by elements with a non-trivial action on the moduli space. We show that under an embedding of these gauge theories into string theory, the Hecke duality groups are represented by T-duality transformations.
Starting from Seiberg's electric-magnetic duality for supersymmetric QCD, we construct dual pairs of non-supersymmetric gauge theories. This is accomplished by first taking the large N limit of supersymmetric QCD and its dual partner and then performing a special ``orbifold projection'' recently introduced by Kachru and Silverstein. We argue that in the large N limit the two projected theories remain dual. The non-supersymmetric gauge theories which can be studied in this fashion have non-supersymmetric field content, chiral fermions and exactly massless scalar matter.
We suggest an alternative approach to deconfine N =1 SU(N) supersymmetric gauge theory with a symmetric tensor, fundamentals, anti-fundamentals, and no superpotential. It is found that although the dual prescription derived by this new method of deconfinement is different from that by the original method, both dual prescriptions are connected by duality transformations. By deforming the theory, it is shown that both dual theories flow properly so that the Seiberg's duality is preserved.
We present a q-analogue of Nahm's formalism for the BPS monopole, which gives self-dual gauge fields with a deformation parameter q. The theory of the basic hypergeometric series is used in our formalism. In the limit q -> 1 the gauge fields approach the BPS monopole and Nahm's result is reproduced.
Parent actions for component fields are utilized to derive the dual of supersymmetric U(1) gauge theory in 4 dimensions. Generalization of the Seiberg-Witten map to the component fields of noncommutative supersymmetric U(1) gauge theory is analyzed. Through this transformation we proposed parent actions for noncommutative supersymmetric U(1) gauge theory as generalization of the ordinary case.Duals of noncommutative supersymmetric U(1) gauge theory are obtained. Duality symmetry under the interchange of fields with duals accompanied by the replacement of the noncommutativity parameter Θ_{μν} w…
The Goddard, Nuyts and Olive conjecture for electric-magnetic duality in Yang-Mills theory with an arbitrary gauge group G is extended by including a non-vanishing vacuum angle $θ$. This extended S-duality conjecture includes the case when the unbroken gauge group is non-abelian and a definite prediction for the spectrum of dyons results.
We consider gauge fields associated with a semisimple Malcev algebra. We construct a gauge-invariant Lagrangian and found a solution of modified Yang-Mills equations in seven dimensions.
