We show how any finite-dimensional algebra can be realized as an idempotent subquotient of some symmetric quasi-hereditary algebra. In the special case of rigid symmetric algebras we show that they can be realized as centralizer subalgebras of symmetric quasi-hereditary algebras. We also show that the infinite-dimensional symmetric quasi-hereditary algebras we construct admit quasi-hereditary structure with respect to two opposite orders, that they have strong exact Borel and $Δ$-subalgebras and the corresponding triangular decompositions.

Establishing whether an algebra is quasi-hereditary or not is, in general, a difficult problem. In this paper we introduce a sufficient criterion to determine whether a general finite dimensional algebra is quasi-hereditary by showing that the question can be reduced to showing that a closely associated monomial algebra is quasi-hereditary. For monomial algebras, we give an explicit, easily verifiable, necessary and sufficient criterion to determine whether it is quasi-hereditary.
Let $Λ$ be an artin algebra and $X$ a finitely generated $Λ$-module. Iyama has shown that there exists a module $Y$ such that the endomorphism ring $Γ$ of $X\oplus Y$ is quasi-hereditary, with a heredity chain of length $n$, and that the global dimension of $Γ$ is bounded by this $n$. Motivated by the structure of the algebras associated to the blocks of the BGG-category O we define a subclass of quasi-hereditary algebras called 1-quasi-hereditary. Many properties of these algebras only depend on the defining partial order. In particular, we can determine the quiver and the form of the relations. Moreover, if the Ringel dual of a 1-quasi-hereditary algebra is also 1-quasi-hereditary, then the structure of the characteristic tilting module can be computed.
Recollements of abelian categories are used as a basis of a homological and recursive approach to quasi-hereditary algebras. This yields a homological proof of Dlab and Ringel's characterisation of idempotent ideals occuring in heredity chains, which in turn characterises quasi-hereditary algebras recursively. Further applications are given to hereditary algebras and to Morita context rings.
A notion of a split quasi-hereditary algebra has been defined by Cline, Parshall and Scott. Du and Rui describe a based approach to split quasi-hereditary algebras. We develop this approach further to show that over a complete local Noetherian ring, one can achieve even stronger basis properties. This is important for `schurifying' quasi-hereditary algebras as developed in our subsequent work. In arXiv:1104.4441 it was shown that any 1-quasi-hereditary algebra affords a particular basis which is related to a given partial order on the set of simple modules. We show that the modules generated by these basis-elements are also modules over the endomorphism algebra of some projective indecomposable modules. In case the Ringel-dual of a 1-quasi-hereditary algebra is also 1-quasi-hereditary, we describe all local Delta-good submodules of projective indecomposable modules. We also consider several examples.
Koenig, Külshammer and Ovsienko showed that Morita equivalence classes of quasi-hereditary algebras are in one-to-one correspondence with equivalence classes of the module categories over directed bocses. We define and study new classes of quasi-hereditary and cellular algebras which generalize Turner's double algebras. Turner's algebras provide a local description of blocks of symmetric groups up to derived equivalence. Our general construction allows one to `schurify' any quasi-hereditary algebra $A$ to obtain a generalized Schur algebra $S^A(n,d)$ which we prove is again quasi-hereditary if $d\leq n$. This paper surveys bocses, quasi-hereditary algebras and their relationship which was established in a recent result by Koenig, Ovsienko, and the author. Particular emphasis is placed on applications of this result to the representation type of the category filtered by standard modules for a quasi-hereditary algebra. We study composition series of derived module categories in the sense of Angeleri Hügel, König & Liu for quasi-hereditary algebras. More precisely, we show that having a composition series with all factors being derived categories of vector spaces does not characterise derived categories of quasi-hereditay algebras. This gives a negative answer to a question of Liu & Yang and the proof also confirms part of a conjecture of Bobiński & Malicki. We give a complete picture of the interaction between Koszul and Ringel dualities for quasi-hereditary algebras admitting linear tilting (co)resolutions of standard and costandard modules. We show that such algebras are Koszul, that the class of these algebras is closed with respect to both dualities and that on this class these two dualities commute. All arguments reduce to short computations in the bounded derived category of graded modules.
Let $A$ be a quasi-hereditary algebra. We prove that in many cases, a tilting module is rigid (i.e. has identical radical and socle series) if it does not have certain subquotients whose composition factors extend more than one layer in the radical series or the socle series. We apply this theorem to give new results about the radical series of some tilting modules for $SL_4(K)$, where $K$ is a field of positive characteristic.
We present an easily applicable sufficient condition for standard Koszul algebras to be Koszul with respect to $Δ$. If a quasi-hereditary algebra $Ł$ is Koszul with respect to $Δ$, then $Ł$ and the Yoneda extension algebra of $Δ$ are Koszul dual in a sense explained below, implying in particular that their bounded derived categories of finitely generated graded modules are equivalent. We also prove that the extension algebra of $Δ$ is Koszul in the classical sense.
The dominant dimension of algebras in the class A of 1-quasi-hereditary algebras is at least two. By the Morita-Tachikawa Theorem this implies that A is related to a certain class B of algebras via bimodules satisfying the double centralizer condition. In this paper we specify the class B and the modules over algebras in B connected with A. The class A is not closed under taking the Ringel-dual. Let $A$ be a finite dimensional algebra over an algebraically closed field $\mathbf{k}$. If $A$ is quasi-hereditary and the projective dimensions of all standard modules are at most one, then $A$ is called left strongly quasi-hereditary. In this paper, we construct a special heredity chain for left strongly quasi-hereditary algebras. Moreover, we show the quotient algebra by an ideal which appears in a special heredity chain of left strongly quasi-hereditary algebra is also left strongly quasi-hereditary algebra.
Ringel's right-strongly quasi-hereditary algebras are a distinguished class of quasi-hereditary algebras of Cline-Parshall-Scott. We give characterizations of these algebras in terms of heredity chains and right rejective subcategories. We prove that any artin algebra of global dimension at most two is right-strongly quasi-hereditary. Moreover we show that the Auslander algebra of a representation-finite algebra $A$ is strongly quasi-hereditary if and only if $A$ is a Nakayama algebra.

We show that there exists a natural non-degenerate pairing of the homomorphism space between two neighbor standard modules over a quasi-hereditary algebra with the first extension space between the corresponding costandard modules and vise versa. Investigation of this phenomenon leads to a family of pairings involving standard, costandard and tilting modules. In the graded case, under some "Koszul-like" assumptions (which we prove are satisfied for example for the blocks of the category $\mathcal{O}$), we obtain a non-degenerate pairing between certain graded homomorphism and graded extension …
In this paper we consider how the \nabla-, Δ- and global dimensions of a quasi-hereditary algebra are interrelated. We first consider quasi-hereditary algebras with simple preserving duality and such that if μ< λthen \nabla fd(L(μ)) < \nabla fd(L(λ)) where μ, λare in the poset and L(μ), L(λ) are the corresponding simples. We introduce quasi-hereditary endomorphism algebras defined over a new class of finite dimensional monomial algebras with a special ideal structure. The main result is a uniform formula describing the Ringel duals of these quasi-hereditary algebras. We call a finite dimensional algebra A S-connected if the projective dimensions of the simple A-modules form an interval. We prove that a Nakayama algebra A is S-connected if and only if A is quasi-hereditary. We apply this result to improve an inequality for the global dimension of quasi-hereditary Nakayama algebras due to Brown. We furthermore classify the Nakayama algebras where equality is attained in Brown's inequality and show that they are enumerated by the even indexed Fibonacci numbers if the algebra is cyclic and by the odd indexed Fibonacci numbers if the algebra is linear.

The aim of this paper is to define and study some quasi-hereditary covers for higher zigzag algebras. We will show how these algebras satisfy three different Koszul properties: they are Koszul in the classical sense, standard Koszul and Koszul with respect to the standard module $Δ$, according with the definition given in \cite{Madsen1}. This last property gives rise to a well defined duality and the $Δ$-Koszul dual will be computed as the path algebra of a quiver with relations.
Up to Morita equivalence, every quasi-hereditary algebra is the dual algebra of a directed bocs or coring. From the bocs, an exact Borel subalgebra is obtained. In this paper a characterisation of exact Borel subalgebras arising in this way is given.
In this short note we investigate some consequences of the vanishing of simple biset functors. As corollary, if there is no non-trivial vanishing of simple biset functors (e.g. if the group is commutative), then we show that the double Burnside algebra is a quasi-hereditary algebra in characteristic zero. In general, this not true without the non-vanishing condition, as over a field of characteristic zero, the double Burnside algebra of the alternating group of degree 5 has infinite global dimension.
Lin and Xi introduced Auslander--Dlab--Ringel (ADR) algebras of seimlocal modules as a generalization of original ADR algebras and showed that they are quasi-hereditary. In this paper, we prove that such algebras are always left-strongly quasi-hereditary. As an application, we give a better upper bound for global dimension of ADR algebras of semilocal modules. Moreover we describe characterizations of original ADR algebras to be strongly quasi-hereditary.

In this article we construct a categorical resolution of singularities of an excellent reduced curve $X$, introducing a certain sheaf of orders on $X$. This categorical resolution is shown to be a recollement of the derived category of coherent sheaves on the normalization of $X$ and the derived category of finite length modules over a certain artinian quasi-hereditary ring $Q$ depending purely on the local singularity types of $X$. Let G be an algebraic group over an algebraically closed field, acting on a variety X with finitely many orbits. "Staggered sheaves" are certain complexes of G-equivariant coherent sheaves on X that seem to possess many remarkable properties. In this paper, we construct "standard" and "costandard" objects in the category of staggered sheaves, and we prove that that category has enough projectives and injectives.

We discuss tilting modules of affine quasi-hereditary algebras. We present an existence theorem of indecomposable tilting modules when the algebra has a large center and use it to deduce a criterion for an exact functor between two affine highest weight categories to give an equivalence. As an application, we prove that the Arakawa-Suzuki functor [Arakawa-Suzuki, J. of Alg. 209 (1998)] gives a fully faithful embedding of a block of the deformed BGG category of $\mathfrak{gl}_{m}$ into the module category of a suitable completion of degenerate affine Hecke algebra of $GL_{n}$.
For any Koszul Artin-Schelter regular algebra A, we consider a version of the universal Hopf algebra aut(A) coacting on A, introduced by Manin. To study the representations (i.e. finite dimensional comodules) of this Hopf algebra, we use the Tannaka-Krein formalism. Specifically, we construct an explicit combinatorial rigid monoidal category U, equipped with a functor M to finite dimensional vector spaces such that aut(A)= coend_U(M). Using this pair (U,M) we show that aut(A) is quasi-hereditary as a coalgebra and in addition is derived equivalent to the representation category of U.
Given a quasi-hereditary superalgebra $A$, the first author and R. Muth have defined generalized Schur bi-superalgebras $T^A(n)$ and proved that these algebras are again quasi-hereditary. In particular, $T^A(n)$ comes with a family of standard modules. We classify generalized tilting modules and full exceptional sequences for the family of quasi-hereditary quotients of type A zig-zag algebras and for a related family of algebras. We also give a characterization of these quotients as quasi-hereditary algebras with simple preserving duality that are 'close' to self-injective algebras.
