Under natural spectral stability assumptions motivated by previous investigations of the associated spectral stability problem, we determine sharp $L^p$ estimates on the linearized solution operator about a multidimensional planar periodic wave of a system of conservation laws with viscosity, yielding linearized $L^1\cap L^p\to L^p$ stability for all $p \ge 2$ and dimensions $d \ge 1$ and nonlinear $L^1\cap H^s\to L^p\cap H^s$ stability and $L^2$-asymptotic behavior for $p\ge 2$ and $d\ge 3$. The behavior can in general be rather complicated, involving both convective (i.e., wave-like) and diffusive effects.
Extending previous results of Oh--Zumbrun and Johnson--Zumbrun, we show that spectral stability implies linearized and nonlinear stability of spatially periodic traveling-wave solutions of viscous systems of conservation laws for systems of generic type, removing a restrictive assumption that wave speed be constant to first order along the manifold of nearby periodic solutions.
Extending results of Oh and Zumbrun in dimensions $d\ge 3$, we establish nonlinear stability and asymptotic behavior of spatially-periodic traveling-wave solutions of viscous systems of conservation laws in critical dimensions $d=1,2$, under a natural set of spectral stability assumptions introduced by Schneider in the setting of reaction diffusion equations. The key new steps in the analysis beyond that in dimensions $d\ge 3$ are a refined Green function estimate separating off translation as the slowest decaying linear mode and a novel scheme for detecting cancellation at the level of the no…
We generalize work of Oh & Zumbrun and Serre on spectral stability of spatially periodic traveling waves of systems of viscous conservation laws from the one-dimensional to the multi-dimensional setting. Specifically, we extend to multi-dimensions the connection observed by Serre between the linearized dispersion relation near zero frequency of the linearized equations about the wave and the homogenized system obtained by slow modulation (WKB) approximation. This may be regarded as partial justification of the WKB expansion; an immediate consequence is that hyperbolicity of the multi-dimension…
In the previous paper \cite{J1}, we established pointwise bounds for the Green function of the linearized equation associated with spatially periodic traveling waves $\bar u$ of a system of reaction diffusion equations, and also obtained pointwise nonlinear stability and behavior of $\bar u$ under small perturbations. In this paper, using periodic resolvent kernels and the Bloch-decomposition, we establish pointwise bounds for the Green function of the linearized equation associated with periodic standing waves $\bar u$ of a system of conservation laws. We also show pointwise nonlinear stabili…
We consider two scalar conservation laws with non-local flux functions, describing traffic flow on roads with rough conditions. In the first model, the velocity of the car depends on an averaged downstream density, while in the second model one considers an averaged downstream velocity. The road condition is piecewise constant with a jump at $x=0$. We study stationary traveling wave profiles cross $x=0$, for all possible cases. We show that, depending on the case, there could exit infinitely many profiles, a unique profile, or no profiles at all. Furthermore, some of the profiles are time asym…
We prove the convergence of quasilinear parabolic viscous approximations to the entropy solution (in the sense of Bardos-Leroux-Nedelec) of a scalar conservation law, considered on a bounded domain in $\R^d$.
Scalar conservation laws with non-convex fluxes have shock wave solutions that violate the Lax entropy condition. In this paper, such solutions are selected by showing that some of them have corresponding traveling waves for the equation supplemented with dissipative and dispersive higher-order terms. For a cubic flux, traveling waves can be calculated explicitly for linear dissipative and dispersive terms. Information about their existence can be used to solve the Riemann problem, in which we find solutions for some data that are different from the classical Lax-Oleinik construction. We consi…
This paper is concerned with singular shocks for a system of conservation laws modeling incompressible two-phase fluid flow. We prove the existence of viscous profiles using the Geometric Singular Perturbation Theory. Weak convergence and growth rates of the unbounded family of solutions are also obtained.
In this paper we study small shocks of 1D scalar viscous conservation laws with uniformly convex flux and nonlinear dissipation. We show that such shocks are L2 stable independent of the strength of the dissipation, even with large perturbations. The proof uses the relative entropy method with a spatially-inhomogeneous psuedo-norm.
In this paper, we investigate the asymptotic behavior of solutions to the Cauchy problem for the scalar non-viscous diffusive dispersive conservation laws where the far field states are prescribed. We proved that the solution of the Cauchy problem tends toward the constant state as time goes to infinity.
In this article we obtain exact solutions of (2+1)-dimensional Boiti-Leon-Pempinelli system of nonlinear partial differential equations which describes the evolution of horizontal velocity component of water waves propagating in two directions. We perform the Lie symmetry analysis to the given system and construct one-dimensional optimal subalgebra which involves some arbitrary functions of spatial variables. Several new exact solutions are obtained by symmetry reduction using each of the optimal subalgebra. We then study the physical behavior of some exact solutions by numerical simulations a…
We study the $L^2$-type contraction property of large perturbations around shock waves of scalar viscous conservation laws with strictly convex fluxes in one space dimension. The contraction holds up to a shift, and it is measured by a weighted related entropy, for which we choose an appropriate entropy associated with the strictly convex flux. In particular, we handle shocks with small amplitude. This result improves the recent article [18] of the author and Vasseur on $L^2$-contraction property of shocks to scalar viscous conservation laws with a special flux, that is almost the Burgers flux…
The large time behavior of the solutions to a multi-dimensional viscous conservation law is considered in this paper. It is shown that the solution time-asymptotically tends to the planar rarefaction wave if the initial perturbations are multi-dimensional periodic. The time-decay rate is also obtained. Moreover, a Gagliardo-Nirenberg type inequality is established in the domain $ \mathbb R \times \mathbb T^{n-1} (n\geq2) $, where $\mathbb T^{n-1}$ is the $ n-1 $-dimensional torus.
We study an integro-differential equation that describes the slow erosion of granular flow. The equation is a first order non-linear conservation law where the flux function includes an integral term. We show that there exist unique traveling wave solutions that connect profiles with equilibrium slope at $\pm\infty$. Such traveling waves take very different forms from those in standard conservation laws. Furthermore, we prove that the traveling wave profiles are locally stable, i.e., solutions with monotone initial data approaches the traveling waves asymptotically as $t\to+\infty$.
We establish instability of periodic traveling waves arising in conservation laws featuring phase transition. The analysis uses the Evans function framework introduced by R.A. Gardner in the periodic case. The main new tool is a periodic generalization of the stability index introduced by Gardner and Zumbrun in the traveling front or pulse case.
We prove existence and boundedness of classical solutions for a family of viscous conservation laws in one space dimension for arbitrarily large time. The result relies on H. Amann's criterion for global existence of solutions and on suitable uniform-in-time estimates for the solution. We also apply Jüngel's boundedness-by-entropy principle in order to obtain global existence for systems with possibly degenerate diffusion terms. This work is motivated by the study of a physical model for the space-time evolution of the strain and velocity of an anharmonic spring of finite length.
This paper studies both existence and spectral stability properties of bounded spatially periodic traveling wave solutions to a large class of scalar viscous balance laws in one space dimension with a reaction function of monostable or Fisher-KPP type. Under suitable structural assumptions, it is shown that this class of equations underlies two families of periodic waves. The first family consists of small amplitude waves with finite fundamental period which emerge from a Hopf bifurcation around a critical value of the wave speed. The second family pertains to arbitrarily large period waves wh…
In this paper, we study the nonlinear stability of the composite wave consisting of planar rarefaction and planar contact waves for viscous conservation laws with degenerate flux under multi-dimensional periodic perturbations. To the level of our knowledge, it is the first stability result of the composite wave for conservation laws in several dimensions. Moreover, the perturbations studied in the present paper are periodic, which keep constantly oscillating at infinity. Suitable ansatz is constructed to overcome the difficulty caused by this kind of perturbation and delicate estimates are don…
We consider a $L^2$-contraction of large viscous shock waves for the multi-dimensional scalar viscous conservation laws, up to a suitable shift. The shift function depends on the time and space variables. It solves a parabolic equation with inhomogeneous coefficients reflecting the perturbation. We consider a suitably small $L^2$-perturbation around a viscous planar shock wave of arbitrarily large strength. However, we do not impose any condition on the anti-derivative variables of the perturbation around shock profile. More precisely, it is proved that if the initial perturbation around the v…
Motivated by physical and numerical observations of time oscillatory ``galloping'', ``spinning'', and ``cellular'' instabilities of detonation waves, we study Poincaré--Hopf bifurcation of traveling-wave solutions of viscous conservation laws. The main difficulty is the absence of a spectral gap between oscillatory modes and essential spectrum, preventing standard reduction to a finite-dimensional center manifold. We overcome this by direct Lyapunov--Schmidt reduction, using detailed pointwise bounds on the linearized solution operator to carry out a nonstandard implicit function construction …
We consider the $L^2$-contraction up to a shift for viscous shocks of scalar viscous conservation laws with strictly convex fluxes in one space dimension. In the case of a flux which is a small perturbation of the quadratic burgers flux, we show that any viscous shock induces a contraction in $L^2$, up to a shift. That is, the $L^2$ norm of the difference of any solution of the viscous conservation law, with an appropriate shift of the shock wave, does not increase in time. If, in addition, the difference between the initial value of the solution and the shock wave is also bounded in $L^1$, th…
We found the precise condition for the decay as $t\to\infty$ of Besicovitch almost periodic entropy solutions of multidimensional scalar conservation laws. Moreover, in the case of one space variable we establish asymptotic convergence of the entropy solution to a traveling wave (in the Besicovitch norm). Besides, the flux function turns out to be affine on the minimal segment containing the essential range of the limit profile while the speed of the traveling wave coincides with the slope of the flux function on this segment.
The goal of this paper is to prove the existence and stability of shocks for viscous scalar conservation laws with space periodic flux, in the multi-dimensional case. Such a result had been proved by the first author in one space dimension, but the extension to a multi-dimensional setting makes the existence proof non-trivial. We construct approximate solutions by restricting the size of the domain and then passing to the limit as the size of the domain goes to infinity. One of the key steps is a " normalization " procedure, which ensures that the limit objects obtained by the approximation sc…
This paper is concerned with the stability of stationary solutions of the conservation law $\partial_t u + \mathrm{div}_y A(y,u) -Δ_y u=0$, where the flux $A$ is periodic with respect to its first variable. Essentially two kinds of asymptotic behaviours are studied here: the case when the equation is set on $\R$, and the case when it is endowed with periodic boundary conditions. In the whole space case, we first prove the existence of viscous stationary shocks - also called standing shocks - which connect two different periodic stationary solutions to one another. We prove that standing shocks…
The aim article is to contribute to the definition of a versatile language for metastability in the context of partial differential equations of evolutive type. A general framework suited for parabolic equations in one dimensional bounded domains is proposed, based on choosing a family of approximate steady states, and on the spectral properties of the linearized operators at such states. The slow motion for solutions belonging to a cylindrical neighborhood of the family of approximate steady states is analyzed by means of a system of an ODE for the parameter $ξ$ that describes the family, cou…
This paper studies the asymptotic stability of shock profiles and rarefaction waves under space-periodic perturbations for one-dimensional convex scalar viscous conservation laws. For the shock profile, we show that the solution approaches the background shock profile with a constant shift in the $ L^\infty(\mathbb{R}) $ norm at exponential rates. The new phenomena contrasting to the case of localized perturbations is that the constant shift cannot be determined by the initial excessive mass in general, which indicates that the periodic oscillations at infinities make contributions to this shi…
We establish nonlinear stability and asymptotic behavior of traveling periodic waves of viscous conservation laws under localized perturbations or nonlocalized perturbations asymptotic to constant shifts in phase, showing that long-time behavior is governed by an associated second-order formal Whitham modulation system. A key point is to identify the way in which initial perturbations translate to initial data for this formal system, a task accomplished by detailed estimates on the linearized solution operator about the background wave. Notably, our approach gives both a common theoretical tre…
We consider the asymptotic behavior of perturbations of Lax and overcompressive type viscous shock profiles arising in systems of regularized conservation laws with strictly parabolic viscosity, and also in systems of conservation laws with partially parabolic regularizations such as arise in the case of the compressible Navier--Stokes equations and in the equations of magnetohydrodynamics. Under the necessary conditions of spectral and hyperbolic stability, together with transversality of the connecting profile, we establish detailed pointwise estimates on perturbations from a sum of the visc…
The purpose of this paper is to prove that, for a large class of nonlinear evolution equations known as scalar viscous balance laws, the spectral (linear) instability condition of periodic traveling wave solutions implies their orbital (nonlinear) instability in appropriate periodic Sobolev spaces. The analysis is based on the well-posedness theory, the smoothness of the data-solution map, and an abstract result of instability of equilibria under nonlinear iterations. The resulting instability criterion is applied to two families of periodic waves. The first family consists of small amplitude …
We consider the one-dimensional Swift-Hohenberg equation coupled to a conservation law. As a parameter increases the system undergoes a Turing bifurcation. We study the dynamics near this bifurcation. First, we show that stationary, periodic solutions bifurcate from a homogeneous ground state. Second, we construct modulating traveling fronts which model an invasion of the unstable ground state by the periodic solutions. This provides a mechanism of pattern formation for the studied system. The existence proof uses center manifold theory for a reduction to a finite-dimensional problem. This is …
We consider a one-dimensional Swift-Hohenberg equation coupled to a conservation law, where both equations contain additional dispersive terms breaking the reflection symmetry $x \mapsto -x$. This system exhibits a Turing instability and we study the dynamics close to the onset of this instability. First, we show that periodic traveling waves bifurcate from a homogeneous ground state. Second, fixing the bifurcation parameter close to the onset of instability, we construct modulating traveling fronts, which capture the process of pattern-formation by modeling the transition from the homogeneous…
We study a damped scalar conservation law driven by the sum of a fixed external force and a localised one-dimensional control. The problem is considered in a bounded domain and is supplemented with the Dirichlet boundary condition. It is proved that any solution of the uncontrolled equation can be exponentially stabilised. As a consequence, we obtain the global approximate controllability to trajectories by a one-dimensional localised control.
We prove that traveling waves in viscous compressible liquids are a generic phenomenon. The setting for our result is a horizontally infinite, finite depth layer of compressible, barotropic, viscous fluid, modeled by the free boundary compressible Navier-Stokes equations in dimension $n \ge 2$. The bottom boundary of the fluid is flat and rigid, while the top is a moving free boundary. A constant gravitational field acts normal to the flat bottom. We allow external forces to act in the fluid's bulk and external stresses to act on its free surface. These are posited to be in traveling wave form…
In this paper we study a finite-depth layer of viscous incompressible fluid in dimension $n \ge 2$, modeled by the Navier-Stokes equations. The fluid is assumed to be bounded below by a flat rigid surface and above by a free, moving interface. A uniform gravitational field acts perpendicularly to the flat surface, and we consider the cases with and without surface tension acting on the free interface. In addition to these gravity-capillary effects, we allow for a second force field in the bulk and an external stress tensor on the free interface, both of which are posited to be in traveling wav…
The one-dimensional viscous conservation law is considered on the whole line $$ u_t + f(u)_x=\eps u_{xx},\quad (x,t)\in\RR\times\overline{\RP},\quad \eps>0, $$ subject to positive measure initial data. The flux $f\in C^1(\RR)$ is assumed to satisfy a $p-$condition, a weak form of convexity. Existence and uniqueness of solutions is established. The method of proof relies on sharp decay estimates for viscous Hamilton-Jacobi equations.
In this paper, we investigate and prove the nonlinear stability of viscous shock wave solutions of a scalar viscous conservation law, using the methods developed for general systems of conservation laws by Howard, Mascia, Zumbrun and others, based on instantaneous tracking of the location of the perturbed viscous shock wave. In some sense, this paper extends the treatment in a previous expository work of Zumbrun ["Instantaneous shock location ..."] on Burgers equation to the general case, giving an exposition of these methods in the simplest setting of scalar equations. In particular we give b…
We study by a combination of analytical and numerical Evans function techniques multi-D viscous and inviscid stability and associated transverse bifurcation of planar slow Lax MHD shocks in a channel with periodic boundary conditions. Notably, this includes the first multi-D numerical Evans function study for viscous MHD. Our results suggest that, rather than a planar shock, a nonplanar traveling wave with the same normal velocity is the typical mode of propagation in the slow Lax mode. Moreover, viscous and inviscid stability transitions appear to agree, answering (for this particular model a…
We are interested in viscous scalar conservation laws with a white-in-time but spatially correlated stochastic forcing. The equation is assumed to be one-dimensional and periodic in the space variable, and its flux function to be locally Lipschitz continuous and have at most polynomial growth. Neither the flux nor the noise need to be non-degenerate. In a first part, we show the existence and uniqueness of a global solution in a strong sense. In a second part, we establish the existence and uniqueness of an invariant measure for this strong solution.
We consider a hyperbolic-parabolic system arising from a chemotaxis model in angiogenesis, which is described by a Keller-Segel equation with singular sensitivity. It is known to allow viscous shocks (so-called traveling waves). We introduce a relative entropy of the system, which can capture how close a solution at a given time is to a given shock wave in almost $L^2$-sense. When the shock strength is small enough, we show the functional is non-increasing in time for any large initial perturbation. The contraction property holds independently of the strength of the diffusion.
It is well-known that by requiring solutions of the Camassa--Holm equation to satisfy a particular local conservation law for the energy in the weak sense, one obtains what is known as conservative solutions. As conservative solutions preserve energy, one might be inclined to think that any solitary traveling wave is conservative. However, in this paper we prove that this is not true for the traveling waves known as stumpons. We illustrate this result by comparing the stumpon to simulations produced by a recently developed numerical scheme for conservative solutions.
We study a Follow-the-Leader (FtL) ODE model for traffic flow with rough road condition, and analyze stationary traveling wave profiles where the solutions of the FtL model trace along, near the jump in the road condition. We derive a discontinuous delay differential equation (DDDE) for these profiles. For various cases, we obtain results on existence, uniqueness and local stability of the profiles. The results here offer an alternative approximation, possibly more realistic than the classical vanishing viscosity approach, to the conservation law with discontinuous flux for traffic flow.
We give an answer to a question posed in [P. Amorim, R. Colombo, and A. Teixeira, ESAIM Math. Model. Numerics. Anal. 2015], which can be loosely speaking formulated as follows. Consider a family of continuity equations where the velocity depends on the solution via the convolution by a regular kernel. In the singular limit where the convolution kernel is replaced by a Dirac delta, one formally recovers a conservation law: can we rigorously justify this formal limit? We exhibit counterexamples showing that, despite numerical evidence suggesting a positive answer, one in general does not have co…
Using spatial domain techniques developed by the authors and Myunghyun Oh in the context of parabolic conservation laws, we establish under a natural set of spectral stability conditions nonlinear asymptotic stability with decay at Gaussian rate of spatially periodic traveling-waves of systems of reaction diffusion equations. In the case that wave-speed is identically zero for all periodic solutions, we recover and slightly sharpen a well-known result of Schneider obtained by renormalization/Bloch transform techniques; by the same arguments, we are able to treat the open case of nonzero wave-s…
