Graphene was deposited on a transparent and flexible substrate and tensile strain up to ~0.8% was loaded by stretching the substrate in one direction. Raman spectra of strained graphene show significant redshifts of 2D and G band (-27.8 cm^-1 and -14.2 cm^-1per 1% strain, respectively), because of the elongation of the carbon-carbon bonds. This indicates that uniaxial strain has been successfully applied on graphene. We also proposed that by applying uniaxial strain on graphene, tunable bandgap at K point can be realized. First principle calculations predicted a bandgap opening of ~300 meV for graphene under 1% uniaxial tensile strain. The strained graphene provides an alternative way to experimentally tune the bandgap of graphene, which would be more efficient and more controllable than other methods that are used to open bandgap in graphene. Moreover, our results suggest that the flexible substrate is ready for such strain process and Raman spectroscopy can be used as an ultra-sensitive method to determine the strain.
Terahertz Raman spectroscopy was performed on high-mobility organic single-crystal semiconductors, by which the phonon energy at the Gamma point was qualified as a function of external uniaxial strain. The observation of peak shifts in Raman modes under uniaxial strain revealed that application of an external strain can effectively tune the intermolecular vibration that particularly correlates electron-phonon coupling. Terahertz Raman spectroscopy conducted in conjunction with molecular dynamics simulation provides an in-depth understanding of the recently discovered very large strain effect o…
We present a systematic study of the Raman spectra of optical phonons in graphene monolayers under tunable uniaxial tensile stress. Both the G and 2D bands exhibit significant red shifts. The G band splits into two distinct sub-bands (G+, G-) because of the strain-induced symmetry breaking. Raman scattering from the G+ and G- bands shows a distinctive polarization dependence that reflects the angle between the axis of the stress and the underlying graphene crystal axes. Polarized Raman spectroscopy therefore constitutes a purely optical method for the determination of the crystallographic orie…
Near-bandgap Raman scattering was used to induce and study photostructural changes in AsxS100-x bulk glasses revealing a new photoinduced polymerization effect. Raman spectra were recorded also in off-resonant conditions allowing for a detailed comparison between the equilibrium glass structure and the metastable one induced by illumination. It is shown that in S-rich glasses structural changes involve the athermal scission of S8 rings and their polymerization to Sn chains. The fraction of bonds involved in this effect is surprisingly high, being one order of magnitude higher than the correspo…
Characterization of strain in two-dimensional (2D) crystals is important for understanding their properties and performance. Using first-principles calculations, we study the effects of uniaxial strain on the Raman-active modes in monolayer MoS$_2$. We show that the in-plane $E'$ mode at 384 cm$^{-1}$ and the out-of-plane $A_1'$ mode at 403 cm$^{-1}$ can serve as fingerprints for the uniaxial strain in this 2D material. Specifically, under a uniaxial strain, the doubly degenerate $E'$ mode splits into two non-degenerate modes: one is $E_{\parallel}'$ mode in which atoms vibrate in parallel to …
In recent years, two-dimensional (2D) layered semiconductors have received much attention for their potential in next-generation electronics and optoelectronics. Wide-bandgap 2D semiconductors are especially important in blue and ultraviolet wavelength region, while there are very few 2D materials in this region. Here, monolayer \b{eta}-type zirconium nitride chloride (\b{eta}-ZrNCl) is isolated for the first time, which is an air-stable layered material with a bandgap of ~3.0 eV in bulk. Systematical investigation of layer-dependent Raman scattering of ZrNCl from monolayer, bilayer, to bulk r…
We report high-pressure photoluminescence, Raman scattering, and x-ray diffraction measurements on a lead-free halide perovskite $Cs_3Sb_2Br_9$. At about 3 GPa, an electronic transition manifests itself through a broad minimum in linewidth, a maximum in the intensity of $E_g$, $A_{1g}$ Raman modes, and the unusual change in the $c/a$ ratio of the trigonal lattice. The large compressibility and observed Raman anomalies indicate to a soft material with strong electron-phonon coupling. The observed below bandgap broadband emission in the photoluminescence measurement indicates the recombination o…
Graphene is the two-dimensional building block for carbon allotropes of every other dimensionality. Since its experimental discovery, graphene continues to attract enormous interest, in particular as a new kind of matter, in which electron transport is governed by a Dirac-like wave equation, and as a model system for studying electronic and phonon properties of other, more complex, graphitic materials[1-4]. Here, we uncover the constitutive relation of graphene and probe new physics of its optical phonons, by studying its Raman spectrum as a function of uniaxial strain. We find that the doubly…
Typical Raman spectra of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) display two prominent peaks, E2g and A1g, that are well separated from each other. We find that these modes are degenerate in bulk WSe2 yielding one single Raman peak. As the dimensionality is lowered, the observed peak splits in two as a result of broken degeneracy. In contrast to our experimental findings, our phonon dispersion calculations reveal that these modes remain degenerate independent of the number of layers. Interestingly, for minuscule biaxial strain the degeneracy is preserved but once the crystal symmetry is broken…
The identification of the crystalline axis of anisotropic black phosphorus (BP) is key for the study of its physical properties and for its optical and electronic applications. Herein, we show that by applying an in-plane uniaxial strain and measuring the changes of Raman shifts, the crystalline axis of BP can be reliably determined. The strain effects on Raman shifts are angle-dependent, which can be expressed as a combination of Raman responses under zigzag and armchair strains. Different from previous polarized optical spectroscopic means, the proposed method does not rely on the laser pola…
Structural strain severely impacts material properties such as the linear and non-linear optical response. Moreover, strain plays a key role, e.g., in the physics of ferroelectrics and in particular of their domain walls. $μ$-Raman spectroscopy is a well-suited technique for the investigation of such strain effects, as it allows to measure the lattice dynamics locally. However, quantifying and reconstructing strain fields from Raman maps requires knowledge on the strain dependence of phonon frequencies. In this work, we have analyzed both theoretically and experimentally the phonon frequencies…
The field of topological mechanics has recently emerged due to the interest in robustly transporting various types of energy in a flaw and defect-insensitive fashion. While there have been a significant number of studies based on discovering and proposing topological materials and structures, very few have focused on tuning the resulting topological bandgaps, which is critical because the bandgap frequency is fixed once the structure has been fabricated. Here, we perform both lattice dynamical calculations and molecular dynamical simulations to investigate strain effects on the phononic topolo…
Motivated by recent experimental observations of Tongay et al. [Tongay et al., Nano Letters, 12(11), 5576 (2012)] we show how the electronic properties and Raman characteristics of single layer MoSe2 are affected by elastic biaxial strain. We found that with increasing strain: (1) the E' and E" Raman peaks (E1g and E2g in bulk) exhibit significant red shifts (up to 30 cm-1), (2) the position of the A1' peak remains at 180 cm-1 (A1g in bulk) and does not change considerably with further strain, (3) the dispersion of low energy flexural phonons crosses over from quadratic to linear and (4) the e…
We explore the impact of strain on charge carrier mobility of monolayer $α$, $β$, $γ$ and $δ$-P, the four well known atomically thin allotropes of phosphorus, using density functional theory. Owing to the highly anisotropic band dispersion, the charge carrier mobility of the pristine allotropes is significantly higher (more than 5 times in some cases) in one of the principal directions (zigzag or armchair) as compared to the other. Uniaxial strain (upto 6% compressive/tensile) leads to bandgap alteration in each of the allotropes, especially a direct to indirect bandgap semiconductor transitio…
Mechanical properties of graphene prepared by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) are not easily comparable to the properties of nearly perfect graphene prepared by mechanical cleavage. In this work, we attempt to investigate the mechanical performance of CVD graphene (simply supported or embedded in polymer matrix), transferred by two different techniques, under uniaxial loading with simultaneous in-situ monitoring by Raman microspectroscopy. The level of charge transfer doping and strain is assessed using the vector analysis modified for uniaxial strain. The strain distribution across the sample…
We employ a combined experimental-theoretical study of the first- and second-order Raman modes of monoclinic $β$-Ga$_{2}$O$_{3}$. The investigated materials is of particular interest due to its deep-UV bandgap paired with a high critical field strength, offering promising applications in power-electronics. A crucial prerequisite for the future development of Ga$_{2}$O$_{3}$-based devices is a detailed understanding of the lattice dynamics as they are important for the elasticity (through acoustic phonons), thermal conductivity (through the heat transferred by phonons), the temperature-dependen…
We have performed a comprehensive first-principles study of the electronic and magnetic properties of two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) heterobilayers MX2/MoS2 (M = Mo, Cr, W, Fe, V; X = S, Se). For M = Mo, Cr, W; X=S, Se, all heterobilayers show semiconducting characteristics with an indirect bandgap with the exception of the WSe2/MoS2 heterobilayer which retains the direct-band-gap character of the constituent monolayer. For M = Fe, V; X = S, Se, the MX2/MoS2 heterobilayers exhibit metallic characters. Particular attention of this study has been focused on engineerin…
With the empirical bond polarizability model, the nonresonant Raman spectra of the chiral and achiral single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) under uniaxial and torsional strains have been systematically studied by \textit{ab initio} method. It is found that both the frequencies and the intensities of the low-frequency Raman active modes almost do not change in the deformed nanotubes, while their high-frequency part shifts obviously. Especially, the high-frequency part shifts linearly with the uniaxial tensile strain, and two kinds of different shift slopes are found for any kind of SWCNTs. More…
2D crystals, such as graphene, exhibit the higher strength and stiffness of any other known man-made or natural material. So far, this assertion has been primarily based on modelling predictions and on bending experiments in combination with pertinent modelling. True uniaxial loading of suspended graphene is not easy to accomplish; however such an experiment is of paramount importance in order to assess the intrinsic properties of graphene without the influence of an underlying substrate. In this work we report on uniaxial tension of graphene up to moderate strains of 0.8% ca.. This has been m…
Accurate and simple local strain assessment in graphene is one of the crucial tasks in device characterization. Raman spectroscopy is often used for that purpose through monitoring of the G and 2D modes. However, the shifts of those two bands might be biased, especially under uniaxial strain, by the effects of charge-transfer doping. Therefore, it is extremely desirable to use another Raman band, less affected by doping, but with a defined and measurable behavior under strain. The Raman 2D' mode is in this sense the ideal feature for the evaluation of strain levels in stretched graphene monola…
GeSn alloys are the subject of intense research activities as these group IV semiconductors present direct bandgap behaviors for high Sn contents. Today, the control of strain becomes an important challenge to improve GeSn devices. Strain micro-measurements are usually performed by Raman spectroscopy. However, different relationships linking the Raman spectral shifts to the built-in strain can be found in the literature. They were deduced from studies on low Sn content GeSn layers (i.e. xSn<8%) or on GeSiSn layers. In this work, we have calibrated the GeSn Raman relationship for really high Sn…
Crystalline wurtzite zinc oxide (w-ZnO) can be used as a wide band gap semiconductor for light emitting devices and for transparent or high temperature electronics. The use of amorphous zinc oxide (a-ZnO) can be an advantage in these applications. In this paper we report on X-ray amorphous a-ZnOx thin films (~500 nm) deposited at cryogenic temperatures by reactive magnetron sputtering. The substrates were cooled by a nitrogen flow through the copper substrate holder during the deposition. The films were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman, infrared, UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopies, and e…
The Raman $2D$-band -important for the analysis of graphene- shows a splitting for uniaxial strain. The splitting depends on the strength and direction of the applied strain and on the polarization of the incident and outgoing light. We expand the double-resonance Raman model in order to explain the strain direction dependence and the polarization dependence of the splitting. The analysis of this splitting gives new insight into the origin of the $2D$-band. Our prediction of the strain direction and polarization dependence agrees well with recent experiments.
We present many-body \textit{ab initio} calculations of the electronic and optical properties of semiconducting zigzag carbon nanotubes under uniaxial strain. The GW approach is utilized to obtain the quasiparticle bandgaps and is combined with the Bethe-Salpeter equation to obtain the optical absorption spectrum. We find that the dependence of the electronic bandgaps on strain is more complex than previously predicted based on tight-binding models or density-functional theory. In addition, we show that the exciton energy and exciton binding energy depend significantly on strain, with variatio…
Ge under high strain is predicted to become a direct bandgap semiconductor. Very large deformations can be introduced using microbridge devices. However, at the microscale, strain values are commonly deduced from Raman spectroscopy using empirical linear models only established up to 1.2% for uniaxial stress. In this work, we calibrate the Raman-strain relation at higher strain using synchrotron based microdiffraction. The Ge microbridges show unprecedented high tensile strain up to 4.9 % corresponding to an unexpected 9.9 cm-1 Raman shift. We demonstrate experimentally and theoretically that …
Raman spectroscopy is a powerful tool for characterizing the local properties of graphene. Here, we introduce a method for evaluating unknown strain configurations and simultaneous doping. It relies on separating the effects of hydrostatic strain (peak shift) and shear strain (peak splitting) on the Raman spectrum of graphene. The peak shifts from hydrostatic strain and doping are separated with a correlation analysis of the 2D and G frequencies. This enables us to obtain the local hydrostatic strain, shear strain and doping without any assumption on the strain configuration prior to the analy…
The dominant phonon wavevectors $q^{*}$ probed by the 2D Raman mode of graphene are highly anisotropic and rotate with the orientation of the polarizer:analyzer direction relative to the lattice. The corresponding electronic transitions connect the electronic equibandgap contours where the product of the ingoing and outgoing optical matrix elements is strongest, showing a finite component along $\bm{K}-\bmΓ$ that sensitively determines $q^{*}$. We revoke the notion of 'inner' and 'outer' processes. Our findings explain the splitting of the 2D mode of graphene under uniaxial tensile strain. The…
We present a tunable phononic crystal which undergoes a phase transition from mechanically insulating to mechanically transmissive (metallic). Specifically, in our simulations for a phononic lattice under biaxial tension ($σ_{xx} =σ_{yy}$ = 0.01 N$/$m), we find a bandgap for out-of-plane phonons in the range of 48.8 - 56.4 MHz, which we can close by increasing the degree of tension uniaxiality ($σ_{xx} / σ_{yy}$) to 1.7. To manipulate the tension distribution, we design a realistic device of finite size, where $σ_{xx} / σ_{yy}$ is tuned by applying a gate voltage to a phononic crystal made fro…
Nanometer-scale graphene objects are attracting much research interest because of newly emerging properties originating from quantum confinement effects. We present Raman spectroscopy studies of graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) which are known to have nonzero electronic bandgap. GNRs of width ranging from 15 nm to 100 nm have been prepared by e-beam lithographic patterning of mechanically exfoliated graphene followed by oxygen plasma etching. Raman spectra of narrow GNRs can be characterized by upshifted G band and prominent disorder-related D band originating from scattering at ribbon edges. The D…
We theoretically investigate silicon doped bilayer graphene, Si-BLG, with different stoichiometry of Si-BLG structures. The dangling bonds of C-Si atoms are found at low concentration ratio of Si atoms inducing sp$^3$-hybridization of buckled pattern in the structure. The Si-BLG with dangling bonds revel strong mechanical response at low strain of a uniaxial load, and the fracture strain is seen at low strain ratio. The sp$^3$-hybridization forms a small bandgap which induces an intermediate thermal and optical response of the system. In contrast, at higher Si concentration ratio, the Young mo…
The domain structure of uniaxial ferroelectric lithium niobate single crystals is investigated using Raman spectroscopy mapping. The influence of doping with magnesium and poling at room temperature is studied by analysing frequency shifts at domain walls and their variations with dopant concentration and annealing conditions. It is shown that defects are stabilized at domain walls and that changes in the defect structures with Mg concentration can be probed by the shift of Raman modes. We show that the signatures of polar defects in the bulk and at the domain walls differ.
The discovery of electric field induced bandgap opening in bilayer graphene opens new door for making semiconducting graphene without aggressive size scaling or using expensive substrates. However, bilayer graphene samples have been limited to um size scale thus far, and synthesis of wafer scale bilayer graphene posts tremendous challenge. Here we report homogeneous bilayer graphene films over at least 2 inch x 2 inch area, synthesized by chemical vapor deposition on copper foil and subsequently transferred to arbitrary substrates. The bilayer nature of graphene film is verified by Raman spect…
We present an automatic measurement platform that enables the characterization of nanodevices by electrical transport and optical spectroscopy as a function of uniaxial stress. We provide insights into and detailed descriptions of the mechanical device, the substrate design and fabrication, and the instrument control software, which is provided under open-source license. The capability of the platform is demonstrated by characterizing the piezo-resistance of an InAs nanowire device using a combination of electrical transport and Raman spectroscopy. The advantages of this measurement platform a…
There has been a massive growth in the study of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) over the past decade, based upon their interesting and unusual electronic, optical and mechanical properties, such as tuneable and strain-dependent bandgaps. Tungsten disulfide (WS2), as a typical example of TMDs, has considerable potential in applications such as strain engineered devices and the next generation multifunctional polymer nanocomposites. However, controlling the strain, or more practically, monitoring the strain in WS2 and the associated micromechanics have not been so well studied. Both phot…
We report a scalable approach to synthesize a large-area (up to 4 mm) thin black phosphorus (BP) film on a flexible substrate. We first deposited a red phosphorus (RP) thin-film on a flexible polyester substrate, followed by its conversion to BP in a high-pressure multi-anvil cell at room temperature. Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy measurements confirmed the formation of a nano-crystalline BP thin-film with a thickness of around 40 nm. Optical characterization indicates a bandgap of around 0.28 eV in the converted BP, similar to the bandgap measured in exfoliated thin-…

The synthesized polyaniline coated graphene nanoplatelets (PANI-GNP) nanocomposites are chemically characterized and using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UV-Vis spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). FTIR and Raman spectroscopy analysis c…
Titanium trisulfide (TiS3) has recently attracted the interest of the 2D community as it presents a direct bandgap of ~1.0 eV, shows remarkable photoresponse, and has a predicted carrier mobility up to 10000 cm2V-1 s-1. However, a study of the vibrational properties of TiS3, relevant to understanding the electron-phonon interaction which can be the main mechanism limiting the charge carrier mobility, is still lacking. In this work, we take the first steps to study the vibrational properties of TiS3 through temperature dependent Raman spectroscopy measurements of TiS3 nanoribbons and nanosheets…
Monolayer WTe2 attracts rapidly growing interests for its large-gap quantum spin Hall effect, which enables promising apllications in flexible logic devices. Due to one-dimensional W-W chains,1T'-WTe2 exhibits unique anisotropic structure and promising properties, which can be modified by simply applying strains. Based on the first-principles simulations, we show that phonon branch undergoes soft down to negative frequency at special q points under different critical strains, i.e., epsilon_a = 11.55 percent along a-axis (with W-W chains) direction, epsilon_b = 7.0 percent along b-axis direction…

We explore the tunability of the phonon polarization in suspended uniaxially strained graphene by magneto-phonon resonances. The uniaxial strain lifts the degeneracy of the LO and TO phonons, yielding two cross-linearly polarized phonon modes and a splitting of the Raman G peak. We utilize the strong electron-phonon coupling in graphene and the off-resonant coupling to a magneto-phonon resonance to induce a gate-tunable circular phonon dichroism. This, together with the strain-induced splitting of the G peak, allows us to controllably tune the two linearly polarized G mode phonons into circula…
Thin membranes, such as monolayer graphene of monoatomic thickness, are bound to exhibit lateral buckling under uniaxial tensile loading that impairs its mechanical behaviour. In this work, we have developed an experimental device to subject 2D materials to controlled equibiaxial strain on supported beams that can be flexed up or down to subject the material to either compression or tension, respectively. Using strain gauges in tandem with Raman spectroscopy measurements, we monitor the G and 2D phonon properties of graphene under biaxial strain and thus extract important information about the…
We use micro-Raman and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy at 300K to investigate the influence of uniaxial tensile strain on the vibrational and optoelectronic properties of monolayer and bilayer MoS2 on a flexible substrate. The initially degenerate E^1_{2g} Raman mode is split into a doublet as a direct consequence of the strain applied to MoS2 through Van der Waals coupling at the sample-substrate interface. We observe a strong shift of the direct band gap of 48meV/(% of strain) for the monolayer and 46meV/% for the bilayer, whose indirect gap shifts by 86meV/%. We find a strong decrease o…
Organic Solid-Solid Wetting Deposition (OSWD) enables the fabrication of supramolecular architectures without the need for solubility or vacuum conditions. The technique is based on a process which directly generates two-dimensional monolayers from three-dimensional solid organic powders. Consequently, insoluble organic pigments and semiconductors can be made to induce monolayer self-assembly on substrate surfaces, such as graphene and carbon nanotubes, under ambient conditions. The above factuality hence opens up the potential of the OSWD for bandgap engineering applications within the contex…
We study the vibrational, magnetic and transport properties of Few Layer Graphene (FLG) using Raman and electron spin resonance spectroscopy and microwave conductivity measurements. FLG samples were produced using wet chemical exfoliation with different post-processing, namely ultrasound treatment, shear mixing, and magnetic stirring. Raman spectroscopy shows a low intensity D mode which attests a high sample quality. The G mode is present at $1580$ cm$^{-1}$ as expected for graphene. The 2D mode consists of 2 components with varying intensities among the different samples. This is assigned to…
