Using a broad band dielectric spectroscopy approach (1 to 10^14 Hz) we prove that the tungsten bronze Ca0.3Ba0.7Nb2O6 (CBN-30) displays a ferroelectric phase transition of mixed displacive and order-disorder character, and its paraelectric phase does not show traces of relaxor behaviour but precursor effects as polar fluctuations below about 550 K. The analysis of the sub-MHz dielectric response together with infrared and Raman spectroscopy reveals that simultaneous polarization mechanisms are responsible for the phase transition. The comparison of the excitations found in CBN-30 with those of (Sr,Ba)Nb2O6 reveals that these mechanisms are congruous, although in CBN-30 the main relaxation process behaves differently due to the different domain structure. The excitations are phenomenologically assigned to phonons, to an anharmonic vibration of cationic origin which plays the role of a soft central mode, and to a relaxation in the GHz range probably due to polarization fluctuations of nanometric size which carries the main part of the permittivity and splits below TC into several weaker excitations with different polarization correlation lengths. The overall dielectric response is therefore explained by the coexistence of several excitations with different thermal behaviors, corroborating the complexity of the tetragonal tungsten bronze structures.
Tetragonal tungsten bronze (TTB) oxides are one of the most important classes of ferroelectrics. Many of these framework structures undergo ferroelastic transformations related to octahedron tilting deformations. Such tilting deformations are closely related to the Rigid Unit Modes (RUMs). This paper discusses the whole set of RUMs in an ideal TTB lattice and possible crystal structures which can emerge owing to the condensation of some of them. Analysis of available experimental data for the TTB-like niobates lends credence to the obtained theoretical predictions.
We present an extensive study of the electric, magnetic and elastic responses of tetragonal ferroelectrics under illumination, using a new theory intertwining material and wave symmetries. Optical rectification, photomagnetic, photovoltaic and phototoroidal vector responses are worked out as functions of the wave vector and wave polarization directions. Second-order response tensors associated with photoelastic, photomagnetoelectric, photorefractive effects and photoconductivity are described. We discuss in detail the photo-Hall and a new non-linear optical effect in tungsten bronzes. Finally,…
Polycrystals of CaxBa1-xNb2O6(CBN) tungsten bronze type oxides have been prepared and their structural, dielectric, and thermal properties have been investigated. It was found that CBN alloys with ferroelectric tetragonal tungsten bronze structure were only available in a composition range of 0.19 <= x <= 0.32. It was also showed that CBN can be classified as a ferroelectric with a first-order thermal phase transition showing polarization precursor dynamics before transition into the ferroelectric phase, in sharp contrast to an isostructural alloy SrxBa1-xNb2O6(SBN) that shows typical relaxor …
We report epitaxial synthesis of superconducting CsxWO3 (x = 0.11, 0.20, 0.31) films on Y-stabilized ZrO2 (111) substrates. The hexagonal crystal structure was verified not only for composition within the stable region of bulk (x = 0.20, 0.31), but also for the out-of-range composition (x = 0.11). The onset of superconducting transition temperature (TC) was recorded 5.8 K for x = 0.11. We found strong correlation between TC and c-axis length, irrespective of the Cs content. The results indicate that hidden superconducting phase region of hexagonal tungsten bronze is accessible by using epitaxi…
A novel lead-free tungsten bronze type ceramic Sr5BiTi3Nb7O30, was prepared by a conventional solid-state reaction route. The room-temperature crystal structure shows an average structure with centro-symmetric space group P4/mbm identified by synchrotron XRD. Temperature dependence of dielectric permittivity indicates that Sr5BiTi3Nb7O30 is a ferroelectric relaxor with Tm near 260 K. The ceramic displays stronger frequency dispersion and lower phase-transition temperature compared with Sr6Ti2Nb8O30. A macroscopic and phenomenological statistical model was employed to describe the temperature d…
A new family of relaxor dielectrics with the tetragonal tungsten bronze structure (nominal composition Ba6M3+Nb9O30, M3+ = Ga, Sc or In) were studied using dielectric spectroscopy to probe the dynamic dipole response and correlate this with the crystal structure as determined from powder neutron diffraction. Independent analyses of real and imaginary parts of the complex dielectric function were used to determine characteristic temperature parameters, TVF, and TUDR, respectively. In each composition both these temperatures correlated with the temperature of maximum crystallographic strain, Tc/…
Several Niobium oxides of formula Ba2LnFeNb4O15 (Ln = La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd) with the Tetragonal Tungsten Bronze (TTB) structure have been synthesised by conventional solid-state methods. The Neodymium, Samarium and Europium compounds are ferroelectric with Curie temperature ranging from 320 to 440K. The Praseodymium and Gadolinium compounds behave as relaxors below 170 and 300 K respectively. The Praseodymium, Neodymium, Samarium, Europium and Gadolinium compounds exhibit magnetic hysteresis loops at room temperature originating from traces of a barium ferrite secondary phase. The presence o…
In this study, we demonstrate sustainable and green nanotechnology for room-temperature synthesis of H$_x$WO$_3$ ($0<x<0.5$) via a novel reaction pathway induced by mechanical energy. A simple mixture of monoclinic WO$_3$ powder and polyolefin (polypropylene) is used to obtain H$_x$WO$_3$ nanoparticles that show high crystallinity even through high-energy ball milling synthesis. The composite of H$_x$WO$_3$ nanoparticles and nanocarbon by-products exhibit unique optoelectronic properties along with outstanding enhancement of photocatalytic performance in the decomposition of azo-dye water poll…
We demonstrate that recent experimental data (E. Castel et al J.Phys. Cond. Mat. {\bf 21} (2009), 452201) on tungsten bronze compound (TBC) Ba$_2$Pr$_x$Nd$_{1-x}$FeNb$_4$O$_{15}$ can be well explained in our model predicting a crossover from ferroelectric ($x=0$) to orientational (dipole) glass ($x=1$), rather then relaxor, behavior. We show, that since a "classical" perovskite relaxor like Pb(Mn$_{1/3}$ Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_3$ is never a ferroelectric, the presence of ferroelectric hysteresis loops in TBC shows that this substance actually transits from ferroelectric to orientational glass phase wit…
We have synthesised ceramic specimens of the tetragonal tungsten bronze K3Li2Ta5O15 (KLT) and characterized its phase transition via X-ray, dielectric permittivity, ultrasonic spectroscopy and heat capacity measurements. The space group of KLT is reported as both P4/mbm or Cmmm with the orthorhombic distortion occurring when there are higher partial pressures of volatile K and Li used within the closed crucibles for the solid state synthesis. The data show strong relaxor behaviour, with the temperature at which the two dielectric relative permittivity peaks decreasing with 104 K $\geqslant$ Tm…
We revisited the problem of the stability of the superconducting state in RbxWO3 and identified the main causes of the contradictory data previously published. We have shown that the ordering of the Rb vacancies in the nonstoichiometric compounds have a major detrimental effect on the superconducting temperature Tc.The order-disorder transition is first order only near x = 0.25, where it cannot be quenched effectively and Tc is reduced below 1K. We found that the high Tc's which were sometimes deduced from resistivity measurements, and attributed to compounds with .25 < x < .30, are to be ascr…
Large electron-electron Coulomb-interactions in correlated systems can lead to a periodic arrangement of localized electrons, the so called "charge-order". The latter is here proposed as a driving force behind ferroelectricity in iron fluoride K0.6FeF3. By means of density functional theory, we propose different non-centrosymmetric d5/d6 charge-ordering patterns, each giving rise to polarization along different crystallographic axes and with different magnitudes. Accordingly, we introduce the concept of "ferroelectric anistropy" (peculiar to improper ferroelectrics with polarization induced by…
The addition of electron donors to the vacant A site of defect-perovskite structure tungsten trioxide causes a series of structural and chemical phase transitions; for instance, in the well-known case of the sodium tungsten bronzes (NaxWO3). Here we calculate the effect of the addition of electronic charge to WO3 without the complication of also including sodium ions. Our density functional theory method enables isolation of electronic effects from the additional size, chemical, and disorder effects present in experimental samples. Our calculated low-temperature phase diagram between x=0 and x…
Experiments reveal that PbK2LiNb5O15 which belongs to the tetragonal tungsten bronze family presents paraelectric and ferroelectric phases and a complex structural change between them. High and low temperature phases are of symmetry P4/mbm and Pba2 respectively, so that this change is also of ferroelastic type. As presented here, crystallographic results hint at a displacive character of the ferroelectric ordering but show a more complex behaviour, with a clear order-disorder mechanism which accompanies the appearance of ferroelasticity. To complete our knowledge of this material, we have perf…
The barium sodium niobate (BNN) with tungsten-bronze structure is one of well-known optical crystals for electro-optic and nonlinear optic applications. This paper reviews the ferroelectric instability of BNN crystals. BNN is a uniaxial ferroelectric with a spontaneous polarization along the tetragonal $c$-axis. There is no report on the observation of an optical soft mode responsible for a ferroelectric phase transition. In the vicinity of the Curie temperature, $T_{\text{C}}=560$°C, an intense central peak (CP) related to the polarization fluctuations along the $c$-axis was observed by the b…
Tungsten oxide and its associated bronzes (compounds of tungsten oxide and an alkali metal) are well known for their interesting optical and electrical characteristics. We have modified the transport properties of thin WO$_3$ films by electrolyte gating using both ionic liquids and polymer electrolytes. We are able to tune the resistivity of the gated film by more than five orders of magnitude, and a clear insulator-to-metal transition is observed. To clarify the doping mechanism, we have performed a series of incisive operando experiments, ruling out both a purely electronic effect (charge ac…
Dielectric response as a function of frequency for high-permittivity dielectric and ferroelectric materials is discussed emphasizing the dynamic behaviour in the microwave and infrared range. After introducing the usual modelling of the polar phonon response and anharmonic hopping in locally dynamically disordered solids, including discussion of displacive and order-disorder ferroelectric phase transitions, we summarised the experimental data for selected ferroelectric, incipient ferroelectric and antiferroelectric perovskite ceramics (STO, BTO, BST, PZO), discussing the dielectric grain size …
CaxBa1-xNb2O6 (CBN) ferroelectric is isostructural with SrxBa1-xNb2O6 (SBN) that is a prototypical ferroelectric of tetragonal tungsten bronze (TTB) structure, but shows a much higher Curie temperature Tc than SBN, providing a wider operation temperature for electro-optical devices. Here, we report the phase diagram and phase transition of CBN solid solution that are still lack of understanding. We show that CBN can be stably formed within a solid solution range of 0.19 <= x <= 0.32. In sharp contrast to SBN that shows crossover from ferroelectric to relaxor around x~ 0.5, CBN merely exhibits …
