We classify the real and strongly real conjugacy classes in $GL_n(q)$, $SL_n(q)$, $PGL_n(q)$, $PSL_n(q)$, and all quasi-simple covers of $PSL_n(q)$. In each case we give a formula for the number of real, and the number of strongly real, conjugacy classes.
We classify all strongly real conjugacy classes of the finite unitary group $\U(n, F_q)$ when $q$ is odd. In particular, we show that $g \in \U(n, F_q)$ is strongly real if and only if $g$ is an element of some embedded orthogonal group $O^{\pm}(n, F_q)$. Equivalently, $g$ is strongly real in $\U(n, F_q)$ if and only if $g$ is real and every elementary divisor of $g$ of the form $(t \pm 1)^{2m}$ has even multiplicity. We apply this to obtain partial results on strongly real classes in the finite symplectic group $\Sp(2n, F_q)$, $q$ odd, and a generating function for the number of strongly real…
We classify all real and strongly real classes of the finite special unitary group $SU_n(q)$. Unless $q \equiv 3 (mod 4)$ and $n |4$, the classification of real classes is similar to that of the finite special linear group $SL_n(q)$. We relate strong reality in $SU_n(q)$ to strong reality in the finite special orthogonal groups $SO^\pm_n(q)$, and we classify real and strongly real classes in the last case for the group $SO^\pm_n(q)$, when q is odd and $n \equiv 2 (mod 4)$.
We construct a hyperbolic group with a finitely presented subgroup, which has infinitely many conjugacy classes of finite-order elements. We also use a version of Morse theory with high dimensional horizontal cells and use handle cancellation arguments to produce other examples of subgroups of CAT(0) groups with infinitely many conjugacy classes of finite-order elements.
In his paper "Finite groups have many conjugacy classes" (J. London Math. Soc (2) 46 (1992), 239-249), L. Pyber proved the to date best general lower bounds for the number of conjugacy classes of a finite group in terms of the order of the group. In this paper we strengthen the main results in Pyber's paper.
In this paper we classify the finite groups satisfying the following property $P_4$: their orders of representatives are set-wise relatively prime for any 4 distinct non-central conjugacy classes.
We will show that every element of a finitely generated abelian group is automorphically equivalent what we will define to be a {\em representative element} in a {\em repeat-free subgroup}, and for finite abelian groups we can count the number of automorphism classes of elements.
In this paper we consider finite 2-groups with odd number of real conjugacy classes. On one hand we show that if $k$ is an odd natural number less than 24, then there are only finitely many finite 2-groups with exactly $k$ real conjugacy classes. On the other hand we construct infinitely many finite 2-groups with exactly 25 real conjugacy classes. Both resuls are proven using pro-$p$ techniques and, in particular, we use the Kneser classification of semi-simple $p$-adic algebraic groups.
Let $k(G)$ be the number of conjugacy classes of finite groups $G$ and $π_e(G)$ be the set of the orders of elements in $G$. Then there exists a non-negative integer $k$ such that $k(G)=|π_e(G)|+k$. We call such groups to be $co(k)$ groups. This paper classifies all finite $co(1)$ groups. They are isomorphic to one of the following groups: $A_5, L_2(7), S_5, Z_3, Z_4, S_4, A_4$, $D_{10}, Hol(Z_5)$, or $Z_3\rtimes Z_4$.
In this note, we determine the finite groups whose poset of conjugacy classes of subgroups has breaking points. This leads to a new characterization of the generalized quaternion $2$-groups. A generalization of this property is also studied.
We construct a CAT(0) group containing a finitely presented subgroup with infinitely many conjugacy classes of finite-order elements. Unlike previous examples (which were based on right-angled Artin groups) our ambient CAT(0) group does not contain any rank 3 free abelian subgroups. We also construct examples of groups of type F_n inside mapping class groups, Aut(F), and Out(F) which have infinitely many conjugacy classes of finite-order elements.
In 2000, L. Héthelyi and B. Külshammer proved that if $p$ is a prime number dividing the order of a finite solvable group $G$, then $G$ has at least $2\sqrt{p-1}$ conjugacy classes. In this paper we show that if $p$ is large, the result remains true for arbitrary finite groups.
Let $G$ be an algebraic group defined over a field $k$. We call $g\in G$ {\bf real} if $g$ is conjugate to $g^{-1}$ and $g\in G(k)$ as {\bf $k$-real} if $g$ is real in $G(k)$. An element $g\in G$ is {\bf strongly real} if $\exists h\in G$, $h^{2}=1$ (i.e. $h$ is an {\bf involution}) such that $hgh^{-1}=g^{-1}$. Clearly, strongly real elements are real and are product of two involutions. Let $G$ be a connected adjoint semisimple group over a perfect field $k$, with -1 in the Weyl group. We prove that any strongly regular $k$-real element in $G(k)$ is strongly $k$-real (i.e. is a product of two …
Let $k$ be a perfect field such that for every $n$ there are only finitely many field extensions, up to isomorphism, of $k$ of degree $n$. If $G$ is a reductive algebraic group defined over $k$, whose characteristic is very good for $G$, then we prove that $G(k)$ has only finitely many $z$-classes. For each perfect field $k$ which does not have the above finiteness property we show that there exist groups $G$ over $k$ such that $G(k)$ has infinitely many $z$-classes.
In this paper we introduce and study the poset of equivalence classes of subgroups of a finite group $G$, induced by the isomorphism relation. This contains the well-known lattice of solitary subgroups of $G$. We prove that in several particular cases it determines the structure of $G$.
We classify all finite groups G such that the product of any two non-inverse conjugacy classes of G is always a conjugacy class of G. We also classify all finite groups G for which the product of any two G-conjugacy classes which are not inverse modulo the center of G is again a conjugacy class of G.
We study a family of finitely generated residually finite small cancellation groups. These groups are quotients of $F_2$ depending on a subset $S$ of positive integers. Varying $S$ yields continuously many groups up to quasi-isometry.
Let $H$ be an extension of a finite group $Q$ by a finite group $G$. Inspired by the results of duality theorems for étale gerbes on orbifolds, we describe the number of conjugacy classes of $H$ that maps to the same conjugacy class of $Q$. Furthermore, we prove a generalization of the orthogonality relation between characters of $G$.
We prove that for every $ε> 0$ there exists a $δ> 0$ so that every group of order $n \geq 3$ has at least $δ\log_{2} n/{(\log_{2} \log_{2} n)}^{3+ε}$ conjugacy classes. This sharpens earlier results of Pyber and Keller. Bertram speculates whether it is true that every finite group of order $n$ has more than $\log_{3}n$ conjugacy classes. We answer Bertram's question in the affirmative for groups with a trivial solvable radical.
Let $G$ be a finite $p$-group, where $p$ is a prime number, and $a\in G$. Denote by $\Cl(a)=\{gag^{-1}\mid g\in G\}$ the conjugacy class of $a$ in $G$. Assume that $|\Cl(a)|=p^n$. Then $\Cl(a)\Cl(a^{-1})=\{xy\mid x\in \Cl(a), y\in \Cl(a^{-1})\}$ is the union of at least $n(p-1)+1$ distinct conjugacy classes of $G$.
For a finite group $G$, we consider the problem of counting simultaneous conjugacy classes of $n$-tuples and simultaneous conjugacy classes of commuting $n$-tuples in $G$. Let $α_{G,n}$ denote the number of simultaneous conjugacy classes of $n$-tuples, and $β_{G,n}$ the number of simultaneous conjugacy classes of commuting $n$-tuples in $G$. The generating functions $A_G(t) = \sum_{n\geq 0} α_{G,n}t^n,$ and $B_G(t) = \sum_{n\geq 0} β_{G,n}t^n$ are rational functions of $t$. This paper concern studied of normalized functions $A_G(t/|G|)$ and $B_G(t/|G|)$ for finite $p$-groups of rank at most $5…
In the present paper we introduce and study a canonical ${\cal E}$-lattice structure on the set of element orders of some finite groups. We show that a finite abelian group is uniquely determined by this canonical ${\cal E}$-lattice.
We combine classical methods of combinatorial group theory with the theory of small cancellations over relatively hyperbolic groups to construct finitely generated torsion-free groups that have only finitely many classes of conjugate elements. Moreover, we present several results concerning embeddings into such groups. As another application of these techniques, we prove that every countable group $C$ can be realized as a group of outer automorphisms of a group $N$, where $N$ is a finitely generated group having Kazhdan's property (T) and containing exactly two conjugacy classes.
Let $G$ be a finite group and $π$ be a set of primes. We show that if the number of conjugacy classes of $π$-elements in $G$ is larger than $5/8$ times the $π$-part of $|G|$ then $G$ possesses an abelian Hall $π$-subgroup which meets every conjugacy class of $π$-elements in $G$. This extends and generalizes a result of W. H. Gustafson.
In this paper we find the number of conjugate $π$-Hall subgroups in all finite almost simple groups. We also complete the classification of $π$-Hall subgroups in finite simple groups and correct some mistakes from our previous paper.
Given a finite group $G$, denote by $Γ(G)$ the simple undirected graph whose vertices are the distinct sizes of noncentral conjugacy classes of $G$, and set two vertices of $Γ(G)$ to be adjacent if and only if they are not coprime numbers. In this note we prove that, if $Γ(G)$ is a $k$-regular graph with $k\geq 1$, then $Γ(G)$ is a complete graph with $k+1$ vertices.
In this paper, we initiate the study of spectrum of the commuting graphs of finite non-abelian groups. We first compute the spectrum of this graph for several classes of finite groups, in particular AC-groups. We show that the commuting graphs of finite non-abelian AC-groups are integral. We also show that the commuting graph of a finite non-abelian group $G$ is integral if $G$ is not isomorphic to the symmetric group of degree $4$ and the commuting graph of $G$ is planar. Further it is shown that the commuting graph of $G$ is integral if the commuting graph of $G$ is toroidal.
Héthelyi and Külshammer showed that the number of conjugacy classes $k(G)$ of any solvable finite group $G$ whose order is divisible by the square of a prime $p$ is at least $(49p+1)/60$. Here an asymptotic generalization of this result is established. It is proved that there exists a constant $c>0$ such that for any finite group $G$ whose order is divisible by the square of a prime $p$ we have $k(G) \geq cp$.
Following G.Szasz [2] a subsemigroup I of semigroup S is called an interior ideal if SIS \subset I. In this paper we explore the classes of regular semigroup and its different subclasses by their interior ideals. Furthermore, we introduce the strongly prime, prime, semiprime, strongly irreducible, and irreducible interior ideals of semigroups and also characterize those semigroups for which each interior ideal is strongly prime. Some important interplay between the classes of all interior ideals and other ideals are given here. In addition to this, we present different characterizations of sem…
We classify pairs of conjugacy classes in almost simple algebraic groups whose product consists of finitely many classes. This leads to several interesting families of examples which are related to a generalization of the Baer--Suzuki theorem for finite groups. We also answer a question of Pavel Shumyatsky on commutators of pairs of conjugacy classes in simple algebraic groups. It turns out that the resulting examples are exactly those for which the product also consists of only finitely many classes.
In this paper, we consider Problem 14.44 in the Kourovka notebook, which is a conjecture about the number of conjugacy classes of a finite group. While elementary, this conjecture is still open and appears to elude any straightforward proof, even in the soluble case. However, we do prove that a minimal soluble counterexample must have certain properties, in particular that it must have Fitting height at least 3 and order at least 2000.
Let $G\in\{p,q\}^*$ be a finite group with trivial center, where $p,q\inπ(G)$ and $p>q>5$. In the present paper it is proved that $|G|_{\{p,q\}}=|G||_{\{p,q\}}$; in particular $C_G(g)\cap C_G(h)=1$ for every $p$-element $g$ and every $q$-element $h$.
We characterize the group property of being with infinite conjugacy classes (or icc, i.e. \not= 1 and of which all conjugacy classes except 1 are infinite) for finite extensions of group.
We show that Nichols algebras of most simple Yetter-Drinfeld modules over the projective symplectic linear group over a finite field, corresponding to unipotent orbits, have infinite dimension. We give a criterium to deal with unipotent classes of general finite simple groups of Lie type and apply it to regular classes
We show that several Morita equivalence classes of tame algebras do not occur as blocks of finite groups. This refines classifications by Erdmann of classes of blocks with dihedral, semidihedral, and generalised quaternion defect groups. In particular we now have a complete classification of the Morita equivalence classes of blocks of finite groups with dihedral defect groups.
We show that all unipotent classes in finite simple Chevalley or Steinberg groups, different from PSL_n(q) and PSp_{2n}(q), collapse (i.e. are never the support of a finite-dimensional Nichols algebra), with a possible exception on one class of involutions in PSU_n(2^m).
We apply Voronoi's algorithm to compute representatives of the conjugacy classes of maximal finite subgroups of the unit group of a maximal order in some simple $\QQ $-algebra. This may be used to show in small cases that non-conjugate orders have non-isomorphic unit groups.
Using generating functions, we enumerate regular semisimple conjugacy classes in the finite classical groups. For the general linear, unitary, and symplectic groups this gives a different approach to known results; for the special orthogonal groups the results are new.
Each graph and choice of a commutative ring gives rise to an associated graphical group. In this article, we introduce and investigate graph polynomials that enumerate conjugacy classes of graphical groups over finite fields according to their sizes.
We construct two practical algorithms for twisted conjugacy classes of polycyclic-by-finite groups. The first algorithm determines whether two elements of a group are twisted conjugate for two given endomorphisms, under the condition that the Reidemeister coincidence number of these endomorphisms is finite. The second algorithm determines representatives of the Reidemeister coincidence classes of two endomorphisms if their Reidemeister coincidence number is finite, or returns "fail" if the Reidemeister coincidence number is infinite.
The well-known Landau's theorem states that, for any positive integer $k$, there are finitely many isomorphism classes of finite groups with exactly $k$ (conjugacy) classes. We study variations of this theorem for $p$-regular classes as well as $p$-singular classes. We prove several results showing that the structure of a finite group is strongly restricted by the number of $p$-regular classes or the number of $p$-singular classes of the group. In particular, if $G$ is a finite group with $O_p(G)=1$ then $|G/F(G)|_{p'}$ is bounded in terms of the number of $p$-regular classes of $G$. However, …
We prove for residually finite groups the following long standing conjecture: the number of twisted conjugacy classes of an automorphism of a finitely generated group is equal (if it is finite) to the number of finite dimensional irreducible unitary representations being invariant for the dual of this automorphism. Also, we prove that any finitely generated residually finite non-amenable group has the R-infinity property (any automorphism has infinitely many twisted conjugacy classes). This gives a lot of new examples and covers many known classes of such groups.
This paper addresses various questions about pairs of similarity classes of matrices which contain commuting elements. In the case of matrices over finite fields, we show that the problem of determining such pairs reduces to a question about nilpotent classes; this reduction makes use of class types in the sense of Steinberg and Green. We investigate the set of scalars that arise as determinants of elements of the centralizer algebra of a matrix, providing a complete description of this set in terms of the class type of the matrix. Several results are established concerning the commuting of ni…
We show that Nichols algebras of most simple Yetter-Drinfeld modules over the projective special linear group over a finite field, corresponding to non-semisimple orbits, have infinite dimension. We spell out a new criterium to show that a rack collapses.
Markov chains are used to give a purely probabilistic way of understanding the conjugacy classes of the finite symplectic and orthogonal groups in odd characteristic. As a corollary of these methods one obtains a probabilistic proof of Steinberg's count of unipotent matrices and generalizations of formulas of Rudvalis and Shinoda.
Using a strong version of the Curve Selection Lemma for real semianalytic sets, we prove that for an arbitrary connected Lie group $G$, each connected component of the set $E_n(G)$ of all elements of order $n$ in $G$ is a conjugacy class in $G$. In particular, all conjugacy classes of finite order in $G$ are closed. Some properties of connected components of $E_n(G)$ are also given.
