Let $k$ be a perfect field such that for every $n$ there are only finitely many field extensions, up to isomorphism, of $k$ of degree $n$. If $G$ is a reductive algebraic group defined over $k$, whose characteristic is very good for $G$, then we prove that $G(k)$ has only finitely many $z$-classes.
For each perfect field $k$ which does not have the above finiteness property we show that there exist groups $G$ over $k$ such that $G(k)$ has infinitely many $z$-classes.
We show that the finiteness length of an $S$-arithmetic subgroup $Γ$ in a noncommutative isotropic absolutely almost simple group $G$ over a global function field is one less than the sum of the local ranks of $G$ taken over the places in $S$. This determines the finiteness properties for arithmetic subgroups in isotropic reductive groups, confirming the conjectured finiteness properties for this class of groups. Our main tool is Behr-Harder reduction theory which we recast in terms of the metric structure of euclidean buildings.
We determine when an arithmetic subgroup of a reductive group defined over a global function field is of type FP_\infty by comparing its large-scale geometry to the large-scale geometry of lattices in real semisimple Lie groups.
We introduce the notion of an orbit series in a quandle. Using this notion we define four families of quandles based on finiteness conditions on their orbit series. Intuitively, the classes tOS and tOSn correspond to finitary compositions of trivial quandles while the classes OS and OSn correspond to finitary compositions of connected quandles. We study properties of these four families of quandles and explore their relationships with several previously studied families of quandles: reductive, n-reductive, locally reductive, n-locally reductive, and solvable quandles.
In this paper, we prove some finiteness results about split Kac-Moody groups over local non-archimedean fields. Our results generalize those of "An affine Gindikin-Karpelevich formula" by Alexander Braverman, Howard Garland, David Kazhdan and Manish Patnaik. We do not require our groups to be affine. We use the hovel I associated to this situation, which is the analogue of the Bruhat-Tits building for a reductive group.
In this paper we discuss connections between the following properties: (RFM) residual finiteness of a monoid M; (RFSG) residual finiteness of Schutzenberger groups of M; and (RFRL) residual finiteness of the natural actions of M on its Green's R- and L-classes. The general question is whether (RFM) implies (RFSG) and/or (RFRL), and vice versa. We consider these questions in all the possible combinations of the following situations: M is an arbitrary monoid; M is an arbitrary regular monoid; every J-class of M has finitely many R- and L-classes; M has finitely many left and right ideals. In eac…
We extend the notion of induced conjugacy classes in reductive groups, introduced by Lusztig and Spaltenstein for unipotent classes, to arbitrary classes. We study properties of equivariant fibrations of prehomogeneous affine spaces, especially the existence of relative invariants. We also detect prehomogeneous affine spaces as subquotients of canonical parabolic subgroups attached to elements of reductive groups in the sense of Jacobson-Morozov. These results are prerequisites for making the geometric expansion of the Arthur-Selberg trace formula more explicit.
In the paper we study twisted conjugacy classes and isogredience classes for automorphisms of reductive linear algebraic groups. We show that reductive linear algebraic groups over some fields of zero characteristic possess the $R_\infty$ and $S_\infty$ properties.
We show that for every positive integer $n$ there exists a simple group that is of type $\mathrm{F}_{n-1}$ but not of type $\mathrm{F}_n$. For $n\ge 3$ these groups are the first known examples of this kind. They also provide infinitely many quasi-isometry classes of finitely presented simple groups. The only previously known infinite family of such classes, due to Caprace--Rémy, consists of non-affine Kac--Moody groups over finite fields. Our examples arise from Röver--Nekrashevych groups, and contain free abelian groups of infinite rank.
The Weyl integration model presented by An and Wang can be effectively used to reduce the integration over $G$-space. In this paper, we construct an especial Weyl integration model for KAK decomposition of Reductive Lie Group and obtain an integration formula which implies that the integration of $L^1$-integrable function over reductive Lie group $G$ can be carried out by first integrating over each conjugacy class and then integrating over the set of conjugacy classes.
We introduce geometric and homological finiteness properties for countable approximate groups via coarse geometry and then study these finiteness properties for S-arithmetic reductive approximate groups. For S-arithmetic approximate groups without infinite places we show that the finiteness length is finite and compute this finiteness length explicitly. In the simple case it is one less than the sum of the local ranks. This extends the Rank Theorem of Bux, Köhl and the second author from positive characteristic to characteristic zero. Our proof is based on a geometric version of their proof, b…
A semigroup variety V is said to be locally K-finite, where K stands for any of Green's relations H, R, L, D, or J, if every finitely generated semigroup from V has only finitely many K-classes. We characterize locally K-finite varieties of finite axiomatic rank in the language of "forbidden objects".
We consider the following two finiteness conditions on normalizers and centralizers in a group G: (i) |N_G(H):H| is finite for every non-normal subgroup H of G, and (ii) |C_G(x):<x>| is finite for every non-normal cyclic subgroup <x> of G. We show that (i) and (ii) are equivalent in the classes of locally finite groups and locally nilpotent groups. In both cases, the groups satisfying these conditions are a special kind of cyclic extensions of Dedekind groups. We also study a variation of (i) and (ii), where the requirement of finiteness is replaced with a bound. In this setting, we extend our…
In this article, we study the elements with disconnected centralizer in the Brauer complex associated to a simple algebraic group G defined over a finite field with corresponding Frobenius map F and derive the number of F-stable semisimple classes of G with disconnected centralizer when the order of the fundamental group has prime order. We also discuss extendibility of semisimple characters to their inertia group in the full automorphism group. As a consequence, we prove that "twisted" and "untwisted" simple groups of type E_6 are "good" in defining characteristic, which is a contribution to …
Let k be a separably closed field. Let G be a reductive algebraic k-group. In this paper, we study Serre's notion of complete reducibility of subgroups of G over k. In particular, using the recently proved center conjecture of Tits, we show that the centralizer of a k-subgroup H of G is G-completely reducible over k if it is reductive and H is G-completely reducible over k. We also show that a regular reductive k-subgroup of G is G-completely reducible over k. Various open problems concerning complete reducibility are discussed. We present examples where the number of overgroups of irreducible…
Let G be a reductive algebraic group and V a G-module. We consider the question of when (GL(V), rho(G)) is a reductive pair of algebraic groups, where rho is the representation afforded by V. We first make some observations about general G and V, then specialise to the group SL2(K) with K algebraically closed of positive characteristic p. For this group we provide complete answers for the classes of simple and Weyl modules, the behaviour being determined by the base p expansion of the highest weight of the module. We conclude by illustrating some of the results from the first section with exam…
In this work, the lattice of varieties of semigroups and the lattice of varieties of I-semigroups (a common setting for both the variety of completely regular semigroups and the variety of inverse semigroups) are studied with respect to the following concepts: a variety V of (I-)semigroups is said to be locally K-finite, where K stands for any of the five Green's relations, if every finitely generated semigroup from V has only finitely many (distinct) K-classes.
Taking residual finiteness as a starting point, we consider three related finiteness properties: weak subsemigroup separability, strong subsemigroup separability and complete separability. We investigate whether each of these properties is inherited by Schützenberger groups. The main result of this paper states that for a finitely generated commutative semigroup $S$, these three separability conditions coincide and are equivalent to every $\mathcal{H}$-class of $S$ being finite. We also provide examples to show that these properties in general differ for commutative semigroups and finitely gen…
Given a group G, we consider its classifying space for the family of virtually cyclic subgroups. We show for many groups, including for example, one-relator groups, acylindrically hyperbolic groups, 3-manifold groups and CAT(0) cube groups, that they do not admit a finite model for this classifying space unless they are virtually cyclic. This settles a conjecture due to Juan-Pineda and Leary for these classes of groups.
Let $k$ be a nonperfect separably closed field. Let $G$ be a (possibly non-connected) reductive group defined over $k$. We study rationality problems for Serre's notion of complete reducibility of subgroups of $G$. In our previous work, we constructed examples of subgroups $H$ of $G$ that are $G$-completely reducible but not $G$-completely reducible over $k$ (and vice versa). In this paper, we give a theoretical underpinning of those constructions. To illustrate our result, we present a new such example in a non-connected reductive group of type $D_4$ in characteristic $2$. Then using Geometri…
We consider the preservation of properties of being finitely generated, being finitely presented and being residually finite under direct products in the context of different types of algebraic structures. The structures considered include Mal'cev algebras (including groups, rings and other classical algebras, as well as loops), idempotent algebras (including lattices), semigroups, and algebras in congruence modular varieties. We aim to identify as broad classes as possible in which the 'expected' preservation results (AxB satisfies property P if and only if A and B satisfy P) hold, and to exh…
We discuss in the context of finite extensions two classical theorems of Takahasi and Howson on subgroups of free groups. We provide bounds for the rank of the intersection of subgroups within classes of groups such as virtually free groups, virtually nilpotent groups or fundamental groups of finite graphs of groups with virtually polycyclic vertex groups and finite edge groups. As an application of our generalization of Takahasi's Theorem, we provide an uniform bound for the rank of the periodic subgroup of any endomorphism of the fundamental group of a given finite graph of groups with finit…
We define a family of groups that generalises Thompson's groups $T$ and $G$ and also those of Higman, Stein and Brin. For groups in this family we descrine centralisers of finite subgroups and show, that for a given finite subgroup $Q$, there are finitely many conjugacy classes of finite subgroups isomorphic to $Q$. We use this to show that whenever defined, the T versions of these groups have a slightly weaker property, quasi-$\underline{\operatorname F}_\infty$, to that of a group possessing a finite type model for the classifying space for proper actions ${\underline{E}}G$ if and only if th…
In 1965, Steinberg's study of conjugacy classes in connected reductive groups led him to construct an affine subspace parametrising regular conjugacy classes, which he noticed is also a cross section for the conjugation action by the unipotent radical of a Borel subgroup on another affine subspace. Recently, generalisations of this slice and its cross section property have been obtained by Sevostyanov in the context of quantum group analogues of W-algebras and by He-Lusztig in the context of Deligne-Lusztig varieties. Such slices are often thought of as group analogues of Slodowy slices. In th…
Let G be a connected reductive linear algebraic group defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p. Assume that p is good for G. In this note we consider particular classes of connected reductive subgroups H of G and show that the cocharacters of H that are associated to a given nilpotent element e in the Lie algebra of H are precisely the cocharacters of G associated to e that take values in H. In particular, we show that this is the case provided H is a connected reductive subgroup of G of maximal rank; this answers a question posed by J.C. Jantzen.
We show that any soluble group $G$ of type Bredon-$\FP_{\infty}$ with respect to the family of all virtually cyclic subgroups such that centralizers of infinite order elements are of type $\FP_{\infty}$ must be virtually cyclic. To prove this, we first reduce the problem to the case of polycyclic groups and then we show that a polycyclic-by-finite group with finitely many conjugacy classes of maximal virtually cyclic subgroups is virtually cyclic. Finally we discuss refinements of this result: we only impose the property Bredon-$\FP_n$ for some $n \leq 3$ and restrict to abelian-by-nilpotent, …
We investigate Levi subgroups of a connected reductive algebraic group G, over a ground field K. We parametrize their conjugacy classes in terms of sets of simple roots and we prove that two Levi K-subgroups of G are rationally conjugate if and only if they are geometrically conjugate. These results are generalized to arbitrary connected linear algebraic K-groups. In that setting the appropriate analogue of a Levi subgroup is derived from the notion of a pseudo-parabolic subgroup.
Motivated by classical facts concerning closed manifolds, we introduce a strong finiteness property in K-homology. We say that a C*-algebra has uniformly summable K-homology if all its K-homology classes can be represented by Fredholm modules which are finitely summable over the same dense subalgebra, and with the same degree of summability. We show that two types of C*-algebras associated to hyperbolic groups - the C*-crossed product for the boundary action, and the reduced group C*-algebra - have uniformly summable K-homology. We provide explicit summability degrees, as well as explicit fini…
Let $G$ be a group. Two elements $x, y$ are said to be {\it $z$-equivalent} if their centralizers are conjugate in $G$. The class equation of $G$ is the partition of $G$ into conjugacy classes. Further decomposition of conjugacy classes into $z$-classes provides an important information about the internal structure of the group. Let $I(\H^n)$ denote the group of isometries of the hyperbolic $n$-space. We show that the number of $z$-classes in $I(\H^n)$ is finite. We actually compute their number, cf. theorem 1.3. We interpret the finiteness of $z$-classes as accounting for the finiteness of "d…
We classify the spherical birational sheets in a complex simple simply-connected algebraic group. We use the classification to show that, when $G$ is a connected reductive complex algebraic group with simply-connected derived subgroup, two conjugacy classes $\mathcal{O}_1$, $\mathcal{O}_2$ of $G$ lie in the same birational sheet, up to a shift by a central element of $G$, if and only if the coordinate rings of $\mathcal{O}_1$ and $\mathcal{O}_2$ are isomorphic as $G$-modules. As a consequence, we prove a conjecture of Losev for the spherical subvariety of the Lie algebra of $G$.
We investigate connections between various rigidity and softness properties for discrete quantum groups. After introducing a notion of residual finiteness, we show that it implies the Kirchberg factorization property for the discrete quantum group in question. We also prove the analogue of Kirchberg's theorem, to the effect that conversely, the factorization property and property (T) jointly imply residual finiteness. We also apply these results to certain classes of discrete quantum groups obtained by means of bicrossed product constructions and study the preservation of the properties (facto…
Let G be a connected, reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero or good and odd. We characterize the spherical conjugacy classes of G as those intersecting only Bruhat cells corresponding to involutions in the Weyl group of G.
We construct classes of Kähler groups that do not have finite classifying spaces and are not commensurable to subdirect products of surface groups. Each of these groups is the fundamental group of the generic fibre of a holomorphic map from a product of Kodaira fibrations onto an elliptic curve.
Let H be a reductive subgroup of a reductive group G over an algebraically closed field k. We consider the action of H on G^n, the n-fold Cartesian product of G with itself, by simultaneous conjugation. We give a purely algebraic characterization of the closed H-orbits in G^n, generalizing work of Richardson which treats the case H = G. This characterization turns out to be a natural generalization of Serre's notion of G-complete reducibility. This concept appears to be new, even in characteristic zero. We discuss how to extend some key results on G-complete reducibility in this framework. We …
Let F be a non Archimedean locally compact field of residue characteristic different from 2, let G be a connected reductive group defined over F, let s be an involutive F-automorphism of G and H an open F-subgroup of the fixed points group of s. We denote by G(F) (resp. H(F)) the group of F-points of G (resp. H). In this paper, we obtain an analogue of the Cartan decomposition for the reductive symmetric space G(F)/H(F). More precisely, we obtain a decomposition of G(F) as a union of H(F)-cosets which is related to the H(F)-conjugacy classes of maximal s-anti-invariant F-split tori in G. When …
We construct Kähler groups with arbitrary finiteness properties by mapping products of closed Riemann surfaces holomorphically onto an elliptic curve: for each $r\geq 3$, we obtain large classes of Kähler groups that have classifying spaces with finite $(r-1)$-skeleton but do not have classifying spaces with finitely many $r$-cells. We describe invariants which distinguish many of these groups. Our construction is inspired by examples of Dimca, Papadima and Suciu.
Let $G=G(K)$ be a simple algebraic group defined over an algebraically closed field $K$ of characteristic $p>0$. A subgroup $X$ of $G$ is said to be $G$-completely reducible if, whenever it is contained in a parabolic subgroup of $G$, it is contained in a Levi subgroup of that parabolic. A subgroup $X$ of $G$ is said to be $G$-irreducible if $X$ is in no parabolic subgroup of $G$; and $G$-reducible if it is in some parabolic of $G$. In this thesis, we consider the case that $G$ is of exceptional type. When $G$ is of type $G_2$ we find all conjugacy classes of closed, connected, reductive subgr…
We show that for any integer n and any field k of characteristic different from 2 there are at most finitely many isomorphism classes of quadratic morphisms from the projective line over k to itself with a finite postcritical orbit of size n. As a consequence we prove that every postcritically finite quadratic morphism over a field of positive characteristic can be lifted to characteristic zero with the same combinatorial type of postcritical orbit. The associated profinite geometric monodromy group is therefore the same as in characteristic zero, where it can be described explicitly by genera…
Let G be a reductive linear algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p > 0. A subgroup of G is said to be separable in G if its global and infinitesimal centralizers have the same dimension. We study the interaction between the notion of separability and Serre's concept of G-complete reducibility for subgroups of G. The separability hypothesis appears in many general theorems concerning G-complete reducibility. We demonstrate that many of these results fail without this hypothesis. On the other hand, we prove that if G is a connected reductive group and p is very go…
We introduce the notion of commuting probability, $p(G)$, for an algebraic group $G$. This notion is inspired by the corresponding notions in finite groups and compact groups. The computation of $p(G)$ for reductive groups is readily done using the notion of $z$-classes. We introduce two generalisations of this relation, $iz$-equivalence and $dz$-equivalence. These notions lead us naturally to the notion of a regular element in $G$. Finally, with the help of this notion of regular elements, we compute $p(G)$ for a connected, linear algebraic group $G$. We also compute the set of limit points o…
This article is a survey of conjectures and results on reductive algebraic groups having good reduction at a suitable set of discrete valuations of the base field. Until recently, this subject has received relatively little attention, but now it appears to be developing into one of the central topics in the emerging arithmetic theory of (linear) algebraic groups over higher-dimensional fields. The focus of this article is on the Main Conjecture asserting the finiteness of the number of isomorphism classes of forms of a given reductive group over a finitely generated field that have good reduct…
The BNSR-invariants of a group $G$ are a sequence $Σ^1(G)\supseteq Σ^2(G) \supseteq \cdots$ of geometric invariants that reveal important information about finiteness properties of certain subgroups of $G$. We consider the symmetric automorphism group $ΣAut_n$ and pure symmetric automorphism group $PΣAut_n$ of the free group $F_n$, and inspect their BNSR-invariants. We prove that for $n\ge 2$, all the ``positive'' and ``negative'' character classes of $PΣAut_n$ lie in $Σ^{n-2}(PΣAut_n)\setminus Σ^{n-1}(PΣAut_n)$. We use this to prove that for $n\ge 2$, $Σ^{n-2}(ΣAut_n)$ equals the full charact…
We investigate the structure of root data by considering their decomposition as a product of a semisimple root datum and a torus. Using this decomposition we obtain a parameterisation of the isomorphism classes of all root data. By working at the level of root data we introduce the notion of a smooth regular embedding of a connected reductive algebraic group, which is a refinement of the commonly used regular embeddings introduced by Lusztig. In the absence of Steinberg endomorphisms such embeddings were constructed by Benjamin Martin. In an unpublished manuscript Asai proved three key reducti…
