The Weyl integration model presented by An and Wang can be effectively used to reduce the integration over $G$-space. In this paper, we construct an especial Weyl integration model for KAK decomposition of Reductive Lie Group and obtain an integration formula which implies that the integration of $L^1$-integrable function over reductive Lie group $G$ can be carried out by first integrating over each conjugacy class and then integrating over the set of conjugacy classes.
The representation theory of semisimple algebraic groups over the complex numbers (equivalently, semisimple complex Lie algebras or Lie groups, or real compact Lie groups) and the question of whether a given representation is symplectic or orthogonal has been solved over the complex numbers since at least the 1950s. Similar results for Weyl modules of split reductive groups over fields of characteristic different from 2 hold by using similar proofs. This paper considers analogues of these results for simple, induced and tilting modules of split reductive groups over fields of prime characteris…
Let $G$ be a connected reductive algebraic group defined over an algebraically closed field $k$. The aim of this paper is to present a method to find triples $(G,M,H)$ with the following three properties. Property 1: $G$ is simple and $k$ has characteristic 2. Property 2: $H$ and $M$ are closed reductive subgroups of $G$ such that $H<M<G$, and $(G,M)$ is a reductive pair. Property 3: $H$ is $G$-completely reducible, but not $M$-completely reducible. We exhibit our method by presenting a new example of such a triple in $G=E_7$. Then we consider a rationality problem and a problem concerning con…

Let G be a reductive algebraic group and V a G-module. We consider the question of when (GL(V), rho(G)) is a reductive pair of algebraic groups, where rho is the representation afforded by V. We first make some observations about general G and V, then specialise to the group SL2(K) with K algebraically closed of positive characteristic p. For this group we provide complete answers for the classes of simple and Weyl modules, the behaviour being determined by the base p expansion of the highest weight of the module. We conclude by illustrating some of the results from the first section with exam…
Let $\rG$ be a reductive group over a commutative ring $k$. In this article, we prove that the adjoint quotient $\adqG$ is stable under base change. Moreover, if $\rG$ has a maximal torus $\rT$, then the adjoint quotient of the torus $\rT$ by its Weyl group will be isomorphic to $\adqG$. Then we focus on the semisimple simply connected group $\rG$ of the constant type. In this case, $\adqG$ is isomorphic to the Weil restriction $\underset{\rD/\spec k}{\prod}\aff^{1}_\rD$, where $\rD$ is the Dynkin scheme of $\rG$. Then we prove that for such $\rG$, the Steinberg's cross-section can be defined …
Let $F$ be a discretely valued complete field with valuation ring $\mathcal{O}_F$ and perfect residue field $k$ of cohomological dimension $\leq 1$. In this paper, we generalize the Bruhat decomposition in Bruhat and Tits from the case of simply connected $F$-groups to the case of arbitrary connected reductive $F$-groups. If $k$ is algebraically closed, Haines and Rapoport define the Iwahori-Weyl group, and use it to solve this problem. Here we define the Iwahori-Weyl group in general, and relate our definition of the Iwahori-Weyl group to that of Haines and Rapoport. Furthermore, we study the…
By a quasi-connected reductive group (a term of Labesse) over an arbitrary field we mean an almost direct product of a connected semisimple group and a quasi-torus (a smooth group of multiplicative type). We show that a linear algebraic group is quasi-connected reductive if and only if it is isomorphic to a smooth normal subgroup of a connected reductive group. We compute the first Galois cohomology set H^1(R,G) of a quasi-connected reductive group G over the field R of real numbers in terms of a certain action of a subgroup of the Weyl group on the Galois cohomology of a fundamental quasi-tor…
Using the principle that characteristic polynomials of matrices obtained from elements of a reductive group over a number field typically have splitting field with Galois group isomorphic to its Weyl group, we construct an explicit monic integral polynomial of degree 240 whose splitting field has Galois group the Weyl group of the exceptional group of type E_8.
Let $G$ be a complex connected reductive algebraic group. Let $G/B$ denote the flag variety of $G$. Let $H$ be an algebraic subgroup of $G$ such that the set ${\bf H}(G/B)$ of the $H$-orbits in $G/B$ is finite ; $H$ is said to be {\it spherical}. These orbits are of importance in representation theory and in the geometry of the $G$-equivariant embeddings of $G/H$. In 1995, F. Knop has defined an action of the Weyl group $W$ of $G$ on ${\bf H}(G/B)$. The aim of this note is to construct natural invariants separating the $W$-orbits of Knop's action.
We compute all sections of the finite Weyl group, that satisfy the braid relations, in the case that G is an almost-simple connected reductive group defined over an algebraically closed field. We then demonstrate that this set of sections has an interesting partially ordered structure, and also give some applications.
It is well known that if G is a finite group then the group of endotrivial modules is finitely generated. In this paper we investigate endotrivial modules over arbitrary finite group schemes. Our results can be applied to computing the endotrivial group for several classes of infinitesimal group schemes which include the Frobenius kernels of parabolic subgroups, and their unipotent radicals(for reductive algebraic groups). For G reductive, we also present a classification of simple, induced/Weyl and tilting modules (G-modules) which are endotrivial over the Frobenius kernel G_r of G.
In 1965, Steinberg's study of conjugacy classes in connected reductive groups led him to construct an affine subspace parametrising regular conjugacy classes, which he noticed is also a cross section for the conjugation action by the unipotent radical of a Borel subgroup on another affine subspace. Recently, generalisations of this slice and its cross section property have been obtained by Sevostyanov in the context of quantum group analogues of W-algebras and by He-Lusztig in the context of Deligne-Lusztig varieties. Such slices are often thought of as group analogues of Slodowy slices. In th…
The authors compute the support varieties of all irreducible modules for the small quantum group $u_ζ(\mathfrak{g})$, where $\mathfrak{g}$ is a simple complex Lie algebra, and $ζ$ is a primitive $\ell$-th root of unity with $\ell$ larger than the Coxeter number of $\mathfrak{g}$. The calculation employs the prior calculations and techniques of Ostrik and of Nakano--Parshall--Vella, as well as deep results involving the validity of the Lusztig character formula for quantum groups and the positivity of parabolic Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials for the affine Weyl group. Analogous support variety cal…
Remarks in a paper by Jacques Tits from 1956 led to a philosophy how a theory of split reductive groups over $\F_1$, the so-called field with one element, should look like. Namely, every split reductive group over $\Z$ should descend to $\F_1$, and its group of $\F_1$-rational points should be its Weyl group. We connect the notion of a torified variety to the notion of $\F_1$-schemes as introduced by Connes and Consani. This yields models of toric varieties, Schubert varieties and split reductive groups as $\Fun$-schemes. We endow the class of $\F_1$-schemes with two classes of morphisms, one …
Recently, Lusztig constructed for each reductive group a partition by unions of sheets of conjugacy classes, which is indexed by a subset of the set of conjugacy classes in the associated Weyl group. Sevostyanov subsequently used certain elements in each of these Weyl group conjugacy classes to construct strictly transverse slices to the conjugacy classes in these strata, generalising the classical Steinberg slice, and similar cross sections were built out of different Weyl group elements by He-Lusztig. In this paper we observe that He-Lusztig's and Sevostyanov's Weyl group elements share a ce…
Let G be a connected, reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero or good and odd. We characterize the spherical conjugacy classes of G as those intersecting only Bruhat cells corresponding to involutions in the Weyl group of G.
Real forms of a complex reductive group are classified by Galois cohomology H^1(Gamma,G_ad) where G_ad is the adjoint group. Cartan's classification of real forms in terms of maximal compact subgroups can be stated in terms of H^(Z/2Z,G_ad) where the action is by a (holomorphic) Cartan involution. The main result is that for any complex reductive group, possibly disconnected, there is a canonical isomorphism between H^1(Gamma,G) and H^1(Z/2Z,G). As applications we give short proofs of some well known results, including the Sekiguchi correspondence, Matsuki duality, results on Cartan subgroups,…
We provide an alternative description of the restriction to spherical unipotent conjugacy classes, of Lusztig's map Psi from the set of unipotent conjugacy classes in a connected reductive algebraic group to the set of conjugacy classes of its Weyl group. For irreducible root systems, we analyze the image of this restricted map and we prove that a conjugacy class in a finite Weyl group has a unique maximal length element if and only if it has a maximum.
Let $Γ$ be a finitely generated group and $G$ be a noncompact semisimple connected real Lie group with finite center. We consider the space $\mathcal X$ of conjugacy classes of reductive representations of $Γ$ into $G$. We define the {\it translation vector} of an element $g$ in $G$, with values in a Weyl chamber, as a refinement of the translation length in the associated symmetric space. We construct a compactification of $\mathcal X$, induced by the marked translation vector spectrum, generalizing Thurston's compactification of the Teichmüller space. We show that the boundary points are pro…
Let $\ell$ be a prime. If ${\mathbf G} $ is a compact connected Lie group, or a connected reductive algebraic group in characteristic different from $\ell$, and $\ell$ is a good prime for ${\mathbf G}$, we show that the number of weights of the $\ell$-fusion system of ${\mathbf G}$ is equal to the number of irreducible characters of its Weyl group. The proof relies on the classification of $\ell$-stubborn subgroups in compact Lie groups.
In this paper we give a combinatorial characterization of projections of geodesics in Euclidean buildings to Weyl chambers. We apply these results to the representation theory of complex semisimple Lie groups and to spherical Hecke rings associated with nonarchimedean reductive Lie groups. Our main application is a generalization of the saturation theorem of Knutson and Tao for SL(n) to other complex semisimple Lie groups.
Recent work by a number of people has shown that complex reflection groups give rise to many representation-theoretic structures (e.g., generic degrees and families of characters), as though they were Weyl groups of algebraic groups. Conjecturally, these structures are actually describing the representation theory of as-yet undescribed objects called ''spetses'', of which reductive algebraic groups ought to be a special case. In this paper, we carry out the Lusztig--Shoji algorithm for calculating Green functions for the dihedral groups. With a suitable set-up, the output of this algorithm tur…
Let $G$ denote a reductive algebraic group over $\mathbb{C}$ and $x$ a nilpotent element of its Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$. The Springer variety $\mathcal{B}_x$ is the closed subvariety of the flag variety $\mathcal{B}$ of $G$ parameterizing the Borel subalgebras of $\mathfrak{g}$ containing $x$. It has the remarkable property that the Weyl group $W$ of $G$ admits a representation on the cohomology of $\mathcal{B}_x$ even though $W$ rarely acts on $\mathcal{B}_x$ itself. Well-known constructions of this action due to Springer et al use technical machinery from algebraic geometry. The purpose o…
