We study the spectral stability of a family of periodic standing wave solutions to the generalized KdV (g-KdV) in a neighborhood of the origin in the spectral plane using what amounts to a rigorous Whitham modulation theory calculation. In particular we are interested in understanding the role played by the null directions of the linearized operator in the stability of the traveling wave to perturbations of long wavelength.
A study of the normal form of the characteristic polynomial of the monodromy map (the periodic Evan's function) in a neighborhood of the origin in the spectral plane leads to two different instability indices. The first index counts modulo 2 the total number of periodic eigenvalues on the real axis. This index is a generalization of the one which governs the stability of the solitary wave. The second index provides a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a long-wavelength instability. This index is essentially the quantity calculated by Haragus and Kapitula in the small amplitude limit. Both of these quantities can be expressed in terms of the map between the constants of integration for the ordinary differential equation defining the traveling waves and the conserved quantities of the partial differential equation. These two indices together provide a good deal of information about the spectrum of the linearized operator.
We sketch the connection of this calculation to a study of the linearized operator - in particular we perform a perturbation calculation in terms of the Floquet parameter. This suggests geometric interpretations attached to the vanishing of the modulational instability index previously mentioned.
The Hamiltonian-Krein (instability) index is concerned with determining the number of eigenvalues with positive real part for the Hamiltonian eigenvalue problem $ J L u=λu$, where $J$ is skew-symmetric and $L$ is self-adjoint. If $J$ has a bounded inverse the index is well-established, and it is given by the number of negative eigenvalues of the operator $L$ constrained to act on some finite-codimensional subspace. There is an important class of problems - namely, those of KdV-type - for which $J$ does not have a bounded inverse. In this paper we overcome this difficulty and derive the index f…
In this paper we prove instability of the soliton for the focusing, mass-critical generalized KdV equation. We prove that the solution to the generalized KdV equation for any initial data with mass smaller than the mass of the soliton and close to the soliton in $L^{2}$ norm must eventually move away from the soliton.
We revisit the phenomenon of instability of solitons in the generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation, $u_t + \partial_x(u_{xx} + u^p) = 0$. It is known that solitons are unstable for nonlinearities $p \geq 5$, with the critical power $p=5$ being the most challenging case to handle. The critical case was proved by Martel-Merle in [11], where the authors crucially relied on the pointwise decay estimates of the linear KdV flow. In this paper, we show simplified approaches to obtain the instability of solitons via truncation and monotonicity, which can be also useful for other KdV-type equations.
We consider the KP-I and gKP-I equations in $\mathbb{R}\times (\mathbb{R}/2π\mathbb{Z})$. We prove that the KdV soliton with subcritical speed $0<c<c^*$ is orbitally stable under the global KP-I flow constructed by Ionescu and Kenig \cite{IK}. For supercritical speeds $c>c^*$, in the spirit of the work by Duyckaerts and Merle \cite{DM}, we sharpen our previous instability result and construct a global solution which is different from the solitary wave and its translates and which converges to the solitary wave as time goes to infinity. This last result also holds for the gKP-I equation.
It is a matter of experience that nonlinear waves in dispersive media, propagating primarily in one direction, may appear periodic in small space and time scales, but their characteristics --- amplitude, phase, wave number, etc. --- slowly vary in large space and time scales. In the 1970's, Whitham developed an asymptotic (WKB) method to study the effects of small "modulations" on nonlinear periodic wave trains. Since then, there has been a great deal of work aiming at rigorously justifying the predictions from Whitham's formal theory. We discuss recent advances in the mathematical understandi…
An initial-boundary value problem for a generalized KdV equation posed on a half-line is considered. Existence and uniqueness of global regular solutions for arbitrary smooth initial data are established.
We use a Leibnitz rule type inequality for fractional derivatives to prove conditions under which a solution $u(x,t)$ of the k-generalized KdV equation is in the space $L^2(|x|^{2s}\,dx)$ for $s \in \mathbb R_{+}$.
We prove global existence and modified scattering for the solutions of the generalized fifth-order KdV equation with critical nonlinearity for small and localized initial data. The proof is undergoing by using the space-time resonance method and the stationary phase argument.
Lower bound on the rate of decrease in time of the uniform radius of spatial analyticity of solutions to the quartic generalized KdV equation is derived, which improves an earlier result by Bona, Grujić and Kalisch.
In this paper we study the generalized Korteweg de Vries (KdV) equation with the nonlinear term of order three: $(u^{3+1})_x$. We prove sharp local well--posedness for the initial and boundary value problem posed on the right half line. We thus close the gap in the well--posedness theory of the generalized KdV which remained open after the seminal work of Colliander and Kenig in \cite{CK}.
In this paper we prove that the defocusing, mass - critical generalized KdV initial value problem is globally well-posed and scattering for $u_{0} \in L^{2}(\mathbf{R})$. We prove this via a concentration compactness argument.
In this note we report local well-posedness results for the Cauchy problems associated to generalized KdV type equations with dissipative perturbation for given data in the low regularity $L^2$-based Sobolev spaces. The method of proof is based on the {\em contraction mapping principle} employed in some appropriate time weighted spaces.
We prove that the initial value problem (IVP) for the critical generalized KdV equation $u_{t}+u_{xxx}+(u^5)_{x}=0$ on the real line is globally well-posed in $H^{s}(\R)$ provided $s>3/5$.
We construct modified energies for the generalized KdV equation. As a consequence, we obtain quasi-invariance of the high order Gaussian measures along with $L^p$ regularity on the corresponding Radon-Nykodim density, as well as new bounds on the growth of the Sobolev norms of the solutions.
In this short note, we consider the global dynamics of the defocusing generalized KdV equations: u_t + u_{xxx} = (|u|^{p-1}u)_x. We use Tao's theorem that the energy moves faster than mass to prove a moment type dispersion estimate. As an application of the dispersion estimate, we show that there is no soliton-like solutions with decaying assumption.
We study the Cauchy problem for the generalized KdV and one-dimensional fourth-order derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equations, for which the global well-posedness of solutions with the small rough data in certain scaling limit of modulation spaces is shown, which contain some data with infinite $L^{2}$ norm.
This paper sheds new light on the stability properties of solitary wave solutions associated with models of Korteweg-de Vries and Benjamin\&Bona\&Mahoney type, when the dispersion is very lower. Via an approach of compactness, analyticity and asymptotic perturbation theory, we establish sufficient conditions for the existence of exponentially growing solutions to the linearized problem and so a criterium of linear instability of solitary waves is obtained for both models. Moreover, the nonlinear stability and linear instability of the ground states solutions for both models is obtained for som…
A nonlinear profile decomposition is established for solutions of supercritical generalized Korteweg-de Vries equations. As a consequence, we obtain a concentration result for finite time blow-up solutions that are of Type II.
We consider solutions of the generalized Korteweg-de Vries equations (gKdV) which are non dispersive in some sense (in the spirit of [18]) and which remain close to multi-solitons. We show that these solutions are necessarily pure multi-solitons. For the Korteweg-de Vries equation (KdV) and the modified Korteweg-de Vries equation (mKdV) in particular, we obtain a characterization of multi-solitons and multi-breathers in terms of non-dispersion.
The solution of a coupled system consisting of generalized Korteweg-de Vries-type equations is obtained for all time where the initial data are analytic on a band in the complex plane. We show that the width of this band decreases algebraically with time.
This paper is concerned with the local well-posedness for the higher-order generalized KdV type equation with low-degree of nonlinearity. The equation arises as a non-integrable and lower nonlinearity version of the higher-order KdV equation. As for the lower nonlinearity model of the KdV equation, Linares, the author and Ponce [11] prove the local well-posedness under a non-degenerate condition introduced by Cazenave and Naumkin [1]. In this paper, it turns out that the well-posedness result can be extended into the higher-order equation. We also give a lower bound for the lifespan of the sol…
We consider the IVP associated to the generalized KdV equation with low degree of non-linearity \begin{equation*} \partial_t u + \partial_x^3 u \pm |u|^α\partial_x u = 0,\; x,t \in \mathbb{R},\;α\in (0,1). \end{equation*} By using an argument similar to that introduced by Cazenave and Naumkin [2] we establish the local well-posedness for a class of data in an appropriate weighted Sobolev space. Also, we show that the solutions obtained satisfy the propagation of regularity principle proven in [3] in solutions of the $k$-generalized KdV equation.
We prove nonlinear modulational instability for both periodic and localized perturbations of periodic traveling waves for several dispersive PDEs, including the KDV type equations (e.g. the Whitham equation, the generalized KDV equation, the Benjamin-Ono equation), the nonlinear Schrödinger equation and the BBM equation. First, the semigroup estimates required for the nonlinear proof are obtained by using the Hamiltonian structures of the linearized PDEs; Second, for KDV type equations the loss of derivative in the nonlinear term is overcome in two complementary cases: (1) for smooth nonlinear…
We study the long-time stability of soliton solutions to the Korteweg-deVries equation. We consider solutions $u$ to the KdV with initial data in $H^s$, $0 \leq s < 1$, that are initially close in $H^s$ norm to a soliton. We prove that the possible orbital instability of these ground states is at most polynomial in time. This is an analogue to the $H^s$ orbital instability result of \cite{CKSTT3}, and obtains the same maximal growth rate in $t$. Our argument is based on the {``}$I$-method{\rq\rq} used in \cite{CKSTT3} and other papers of Colliander, Keel, Staffilani, Takaoka and Tao, which pus…
In this paper we study uniqueness properties of solutions of the k-generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation. Our goal is to obtain sufficient conditions on the behavior of the difference $u_1-u_2$ of two solutions $u_1, u_2$ of the equation at two different times $t_0=0$ and $t_1=1$ which guarantee that $u_1\equiv u_2$.
We prove global well-posedness of the subcritical generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation (the mKdV and the gKdV with quartic power of nonlinearity) subject to an additive random perturbation. More precisely, we prove that if the driving noise is a cylindrical Wiener process on $L^2(\mathbb{R})$ and the covariance operator is Hilbert-Schmidt in an appropriate Sobolev space, then the solutions with $H^1(\mathbb{R})$ data are globally well-posed in $H^1(\mathbb{R})$. This extends results obtained by A. de Bouard and A. Debussche for the stochastic KdV equation.
We study the semiclassical limit of the (generalised) KdV equation, for initial data with Sobolev regularity, before the time of the gradient catastrophe of the limit conservation law. In particular, we show that in the semiclassical limit the solution of the KdV equation: i) converges in $H^s$ to the solution of the Hopf equation, provided the initial data belongs to $H^s$, ii) admits an asymptotic expansion in powers of the semiclassical parameter, if the initial data belongs to the Schwartz class. The result is also generalized to KdV equations with higher order linearities.
We give a detailed description in 1-D the growth of Sobolev norms for time dependent linear generalized KdV-type equations on the circle. For most initial data, the growth of Sobolev norms is polynomial in time for fixed analytic potential with admissible growth. If the initial data are given in a fixed smaller function space with more strict admissible growth conditions for $V(x,t)$ , then the growth of previous Sobolev norms is at most logarithmic in time.
We consider the defocusing generalized KdV equations on the circle. In particular, we construct global-in-time solutions with initial data distributed according to the Gibbs measure and show that the law of the random solutions, at any time, is again given by the Gibbs measure. In handling a nonlinearity of an arbitrary high degree, we make use of the Hermite polynomials and the white noise functional.
We prove special decay properties of solutions to the initial value problem associated to the $k$-generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation. These are related with persistence properties of the solution flow in weighted Sobolev spaces and with sharp unique continuation properties of solutions to this equation. As application of our method we also obtain results concerning the decay behavior of perturbations of the traveling wave solutions as well as results for solutions corresponding to special data.
In this paper, we consider a discrete restriction associated with KdV equations. Some new Strichartz estimates are obtained. We also establish the local well-posedness for the periodic generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation with nonlinear term $ F(u)\p_x u$ provided $F\in C^5$ and the initial data $ϕ\in H^s$ with $s>1/2$.
Fractional calculus of variation plays an important role to formulate the non-conservative physical problems. In this paper we use semi-inverse method and fractional variational principle to formulate the fractional order generalized Korteweg-deVries (KdV) equation with Jumarie type fractional derivative and proposed a new method to solve the non-linear fractional differential equation named as expansion method. Using this method we obtained the solutions of fractional order generalized KdV. The obtained solutions are more general compare to other method and the solutions are expressed in term…
We consider the mass-critical generalized Korteweg--de Vries equation $$(\partial_t + \partial_{xxx})u=\pm \partial_x(u^5)$$ for real-valued functions $u(t,x)$. We prove that if the global well-posedness and scattering conjecture for this equation failed, then, conditional on a positive answer to the global well-posedness and scattering conjecture for the mass-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation $(-i\partial_t + \partial_{xx})u=\pm (|u|^4u)$, there exists a minimal-mass blowup solution to the mass-critical generalized KdV equation which is almost periodic modulo the symmetries of the equat…
We consider the defocusing supercritical generalized Korteweg-de Vries (gKdV) equation $\partial_t u+\partial_x^3u-\partial_x(u^{k+1})=0$, where $k>4$ is an even integer number. We show that if the initial data $u_0$ belongs to $H^1$ then the corresponding solution is global and scatters in $H^1$. Our method of proof is inspired on the compactness method introduced by C. Kenig and F. Merle.
In this paper we consider the slightly $L^2$-supercritical gKdV equations $\partial_t u+(u_{xx}+u|u|^{p-1})_x=0$, with the nonlinearity $5<p<5+\varepsilon$ and $0<\varepsilon\ll 1$ . We will prove the existence and stability of a blow-up dynamic with self-similar blow-up rate in the energy space $H^1$ and give a specific description of the formation of the singularity near the blow-up time.
In this paper, we show the global well-posedness for periodic gKdV equations in the space $H^s(\mathbb{T})$, $s\ge \frac12$ for quartic case, and $s> \frac59$ for quintic case. These improve the previous results of I-team in 2004. In particular, the result is sharp for quintic case. The main approaches are the I-method combining with the resonance decomposition developed by Miao et al in 2010, and a bilinear Strichartz estimate in periodic setting.
We prove the existence of Cantor families of small amplitude, linearly stable, quasi-periodic solutions of quasi-linear autonomous Hamiltonian generalized KdV equations. We consider the most general quasi-linear quadratic nonlinearity. The proof is based on an iterative Nash-Moser algorithm. To initialize this scheme, we need to perform a bifurcation analysis taking into account the strongly perturbative effects of the nonlinearity near the origin. In particular, we implement a weak version of the Birkhoff normal form method. The inversion of the linearized operators at each step of the iterat…
This paper concerns spectral stability of nonlinear waves in KdV-type evolution equations. The relevant eigenvalue problem is defined by the composition of an unbounded self-adjoint operator with a finite number of negative eigenvalues and an unbounded non-invertible symplectic operator $\partial_x$. The instability index theorem is proven under a generic assumption on the self-adjoint operator both in the case of solitary waves and periodic waves. This result is reviewed in the context of other recent results on spectral stability of nonlinear waves in KdV-type evolution equations.
We discuss the question whether solutions of the initial value problem for the generalized KdV equation can have compact support at two different times.
We consider the problem of the soliton propagation, in a slowly varying medium, for a generalized Korteweg - de Vries equations (gKdV). We study the effects of inhomogeneities on the dynamics of a standard soliton. We prove that slowly varying media induce on the soliton solution large dispersive effects at large time. Moreover, unlike gKdV equations, we prove that there is no pure-soliton solution in this regime.
We consider KdV-type equations with $C^1$ nonhomogeneous nonlinearities and small dispersion $\varepsilon$. The first result consists in the conclusion that, in the leading term with respect to $\varepsilon$, the solitary waves in this model interact like KdV solitons. Next it turned out that there exists a very interesting scenario of instability in which the short-wave soliton remains stable whereas a small long-wave part, generated by perturbations of original equation, turns to be unstable, growing and destroying the leading term. At the same time, such perturbation can eliminate the colli…
We prove that the Cauchy problem of the mass-critical generalized KdV equation is globally well-posed in Sobolev spaces $H^s(\R)$ for $s>6/13$. Of course, we require that the mass is strictly less than that of the ground state in the focusing case. The main approach is the "I-method" together with the multilinear correction analysis. Moreover, we use some "partially refined" argument to lower the upper control of the multiplier in the resonant interactions. The result improves the previous works of Fonseca, Linares, Ponce (2003) and Farah (2009).
For the mass critical generalized KdV equation $\partial_t u + \partial_x (\partial_x^2 u + u^5)=0$ on $\mathbb R$, we construct a full family of flattening solitary wave solutions. Let $Q$ be the unique even positive solution of $Q''+Q^5=Q$. For any $ν\in (0,\frac 13)$, there exist global (for $t\geq 0$) solutions of the equation with the asymptotic behavior \begin{equation*} u(t,x)= t^{-\fracν2} Q\left(t^{-ν} (x-x(t))\right)+w(t,x) \end{equation*} where, for some $c>0$, \begin{equation*} x(t)\sim c t^{1-2ν} \quad \mbox{and}\quad \|w(t)\|_{H^1(x>\frac 12 x(t))} \to 0\quad \mbox{as $t\to +\inf…
We revisit the phenomenon of instability of solitons in the two dimensional generalization of the Korteweg-de Vries equation, the generalized Zakharov-Kuznetsov (ZK) equation, $u_t + \partial_{x_1} (Δu + u^p) = 0, (x_1,x_2) \in \mathbb R^2$. It is known that solitons are unstable in this two dimensional equation for nonlinearities $p > 3$. This was shown by Anne de Bouard in [4] generalizing the arguments of Bona-Souganidis-Strauss in [1] for the generalized KdV equation. In this paper, we use a different method to obtain the instability of solitons, namely, truncation and monotonicity propert…
In this paper we study weak continuity of the dynamical systems for the KdV equation in H^{-3/4}(R) and the modified KdV equation in H^{1/4}(R). This topic should have significant applications in the study of other properties of these equations such as finite time blow-up and asymptotic stability and instability of solitary waves. The spaces considered here are borderline Sobolev spaces for the corresponding equations from the viewpoint of the local well-posedness theory. We first use a variant of the method of [5] to prove weak continuity for the mKdV, and next use a similar result for a mKdV…
We consider the Cauchy problem for a generalized KdV equation \begin{eqnarray*} u_{t}+\partial_{x}^{3}u+u^{7}u_{x}=0, \end{eqnarray*} with random data on \R. Kenig, Ponce, Vega(Comm. Pure Appl. Math.46(1993), 527-620)proved that the problem is globally well-posed in H^{s}(\R)$ with s> s_{crit}=\frac{3}{14}, which is the scaling critical regularity indices. Birnir, Kenig, Ponce, Svanstedt, Vega(J. London Math. Soc. 53 (1996), 551-559.) proved that the problem is ill-posed in the sense that the time of existence T and the continuous dependence cannot be expressed in terms of the size of the data…
The generalized Korteweg-de Vries equations are a class of Hamiltonian systems in infinite dimension derived from the KdV equation where the quadratic term is replaced by a higher order power term. These equations have two conservation laws in the energy space H^1(L^2 norm and energy). We consider in this paper the {\it critical} generalized KdV equation, which corresponds to the smallest power of the nonlinearity such that the two conservation laws do not imply a bound in H^1 uniform in time for all H^1 solutions (and thus global existence). From [15], there do exist for this equation solutio…
We present a method to prove nonlinear instability of solitary waves in dispersive models. Two examples are analyzed: we prove the nonlinear long time instability of the KdV solitary wave (with respect to periodic transverse perturbations) under a KP-I flow and the transverse nonlinear instability of solitary waves for the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation.
We consider the approximate control of solitons in generalized Korteweg-de Vries equations. By introducing a suitable internal bilinear control on the equation, we prove that any soliton is locally null controllable, and moreover, any soliton can be accelerated to any particular positive velocity, after a suitable large amount of time. Precise estimates on the error terms and the rate of decay in the approximate null controllability result are also given. Our method introduces a new insight on the control of nonlinear objects, from the point of view of interaction and collision problems for no…
We consider the effects of varying dispersion and nonlinearity on the stability of periodic traveling wave solutions of nonlinear PDE of KdV-type, including generalized KdV and Benjamin-Ono equations. In this investigation, we consider the spectral stability of such solutions that arise as small perturbations of an equilibrium state. A key feature of our analysis is the development of a nonlocal Floquet-like theory that is suitable to analyze the $L^2(\RM)$ spectrum of the associated linearized operators. Using spectral perturbation theory then, we derive a relationship between the power of th…
In this paper we are concerned with the well-posedness and the exponential stabilization of the generalized Korteweg-de Vries Burgers equation, posed on the whole real line, under the effect of a damping term. Both problems are investigated when the exponent p in the nonlinear term ranges over the interval $[1,5)$. We first prove the global well-posedness in $H^s(R)$, for $0 \leq s \leq 3$ and $1 \leq p < 2$, and in $H^3(R)$, when $p \geq 2$. For $2 \leq p < 5$, we prove the existence of global solutions in the $L^2$-setting. Then, by using multiplier techniques combined with interpolation the…
In this paper, we study the transverse instability of generalized Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation for the line soliton with critical speed. We derive and justify a normal form reduction for a bifurcation problem of the stationary nonlinear KdV equation on the product space R ? T.
