We investigate the evolution of superconducting properties by doping non-magnetic impurity in single crystals of YNi2-xPtxB2C (x=0-0.2). With increasing Pt doping the critical temperature (Tc) monotonically decreases from 15.85K and saturates to a value ~13K for x>0.14. However, unlike conventional s-wave superconductors, the upper critical field (HC2) along both crystallographic directions a and c decreases with increasing Pt doping. Specific heat measurements show that the density of states (N(EF)) at the Fermi level (EF) and the Debye temperatures (Theta_D) in this series remains constant within the error bars of our measurement. We explain our results based on the increase in intraband scattering in the multiband superconductor YNi2B2C.
The temperature dependence of the upper critical field, Hc2, for both field directions in partially substituted polycrystalline MgB2 was determined. Whereas the suppression of Tc is similar for aluminum and carbon substituted samples, Hc2 is affected by the substitution in profoundly different ways. In the case of Al substitution changes can tentatively be described by intrinsic effects (shift of the Fermi level). In the C substituted samples, Hc2 is increased drastically, and extrinsic effects (disorder) have to play a major role. The strong contrast between the two substitutions is discussed…
We report the synthesis and characterization of antimony doped oxypnictide superconductor, LaO0.8F0.2FeAs1-xSbx (x = 0.05 and 0.10). The parent compound LaOFeAs with fluorine doping exhibits superconductivity at maximum transition temperature ~ 28.5 K [11]. Here we partially substitute As by Sb (LaO0.8F0.2FeAs1-xSbx) and observe enhancement of the transition temperature to 30.1 K. This is the only instance so far where Tc increases with doping in the conducting layer (FeAs) and this leads to the highest transition temperature in any La-based oxypnictide. XRD and EDAX measurements confirm phase…
We report measurements of Hc2(T) up to 85 Tesla on Ba1-xKxAs2Fe2 single crystals and FeSe1-xTex films tuned by doping and strain. We observed an Hc2 enhancement by nearly 25 T at 30 K for the optimally-doped Ba1-xKxAs2Fe2 as compared to the previous results and extraordinarily high slopes dHc2/dT = 250-500 T/K near Tc in FeSe1-xTex indicating an almost complete suppression of the orbital pair-breaking. Theoretical analysis of Hc2(T) in FeSe1-xTex and the optimally doped Ba1-xKxAs2Fe2 predicts an inhomogeneous Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state for H//ab and T < 3-10 K, and shows that Hc2 in…
The low-temperature specific heat of La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 (LSCO) single crystals in magnetic field H up to 12 T has been examined over a wide range of doping (0.063=< p =<0.238). From this we have mapped the upper critical field H_{c2} of LSCO across the entire superconducting diagram. It is found that the H_{c2} shows a doping dependence similar to that of the critical temperature T_c. We have discussed the implications of the result and proposed that there may be an effective superconducting energy scale responsible for the H_{c2} behavior in the underdoped region.
We report significant enhancement in superconducting properties of yttrium substituted Ce1-xYxOFFeAs superconductors. The polycrystalline samples were prepared by two step solid state reaction technique. X-ray diffraction confirmed tetragonal ZrCuSiAs structure with decrease in both a and c lattice parameters on increasing yttrium substitution (with fixed F content). With smaller ion Y in place of Ce, the transition temperature increased by 6 K. Yttrium doping also lead to higher critical fields as well as stronger inter and intra-granular current density. The magnetization critical current de…
We report the results from resistivity and magnetic measurements on polycrystalline Ce oxypnictide (CeFeAsO1-xFx) samples where x spans from 0.13 to 0.25. We find that the orbital limiting field is as high as 150 T and it systematically decreases with increasing doping. The Maki parameter is greater than one across the phase diagram and the large Maki parameter suggests that orbital and Pauli limiting effects contribute to the upper critical field. The broadening of the superconducting transition in the resistivity data was interpreted using the thermally activated flux flow (TAFF) model where…
Ion implantation of Fe and Mn into Al thin films was used for effective modification of Al superconductive properties. Critical temperature of the transition to superconducting state was found to decrease gradually with implanted Fe concentration. it was found that suppression by Mn implantation much stronger compared to Fe. At low concentrations of implanted ions, suppression of the critical temperature can be described with reasonable accuracy by existing models, while at concentrations above 0.1 at.% a pronounced discrepancy between the models and experiments is observed.
We investigated the effect of SiC nano-particle doping on the crystal lattice structure, critical temperature T_c, critical current density J_c, and flux pinning in MgB_2 superconductor. A series of MgB_{2-x}(SiC)_{x/2} samples with x = 0 to 1.0 were fabricated using in-situ reaction process. The contraction of the lattice and depression of T_c with increasing SiC doping level remained rather small due to the counter-balanced effect of Si and C co-doping. The high level Si and C co-doping allowed the creation of intra-grain defects and highly dispersed nano-inclusions within the grains which c…
MgB2/Fe tapes with 2.5-15 at.% ZrB2 additions were prepared through the in situ powder-in-tube method. Compared to the pure tape, a significant improvement in the in-field critical current density Jc was observed, most notably for 10 at.% doping, while the critical temperature decreased slightly. At 4.2 K, the transport Jc for the 10 at.% doped sample increased by more than an order of magnitude than the undoped one in magnetic fields above 9 T. Nanoscale segregates or defects caused by the ZrB2 additions which act as effective flux pinning centers are proposed to be the main reason for the im…
In-plane resistivity measurements as a function of temperature and magnetic field up to 35~T with precise orientation within the crystallographic $ac-$plane were used to study the upper critical field, $H_{c2}$, of the hole-doped iron-based superconductor Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$. Compositions of the samples studied were spanning from underdoped $x=$0.17 ($T_c$=12~K) and $x$=0.22 ($T_c$=20~K), both in the coexistence range of stripe magnetism and superconductivity, though optimal doping $x$=0.39 ($T_c$=38.4~K), $x$=0.47 ($T_c$=37.2~K), to overdoped $x$=0.65 ($T_c$=22~K), $x$=0.83 ($T_c$=10~…
We report the effect of Pt doping on the superconductivity in CuRh2Se4 spinel using a combined experimental and theoretical study. Our XRD results reveal that the Cu(Rh1-xPtx)2Se4 crystallizes in the structure with a space group of Fd3-m (No. 227), and the lattice parameter a increases with Pt doping. The resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurement results verify that the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) forms a dome-like shape with a maximum value of 3.84 K at x = 0.06. It is also observed that the Pt-doping slightly reduces the lower critical magnetic field from 220 Oe in …
A long-standing puzzle is why there is a difference between the optimal doping δ_{optimal}=0.15 for the maximal superconducting (SC) transition temperature Tc and the critical doping δ_{critical}=0.19 for the highest superfluid density ρ_s in cuprate superconductors? This puzzle is calling for an explanation. Within the kinetic energy driven SC mechanism, it is shown that except the quasiparticle coherence, ρ_s is dominated by the bare pair gap, while Tc is set by the effective pair gap. By calculation of the ratio of the effective and the bare pair gaps, it is shown that the coupling strength…
The electrical resistivity (Rxx) and Hall resistivity (Rxy) of LaFeAsO1-xFx have been measured over a wide fluorine doping range 0 =< x =< 0.14 using 60 T pulsed magnets. While the superconducting phase diagram (Tc, x) displays the classic dome-shaped structure, we find that the resistive upper critical field (Hc2) increases monotonically with decreasing fluorine concentration, with the largest Hc2 >= 75 T for x = 0.05. This is reminiscent of the composition dependence in high-Tc cuprates and might correlate with opening of a pseudo-gap in the underdoped region. Further, the temperature depend…
We report the effect of Nb doping on the upper critical field of the cubic Laves-phase superconductor HfV$_{2}$ studied in a series of HfV$_{2-x}$Nb$_{x}$ samples with 0 $\leq$ $x$ $\leq$ 0.3 under pulsed fields up to 30 T. The undoped HfV$_{2}$ undergoes a martensitic structural transition around 110 K, and becomes superconducting below $T_{\rm c}$ = 9.4 K. Upon Nb doping, while the structural transition is suppressed for $x$ $\geq$ 0.1, a maximum in $T_{\rm c}$ of 10.1 K and zero-temperature upper critical field $B_{\rm c2}$(0) of 22.4 T is found at $x$ = 0.2, which is ascribed to an increas…
We report on measurements of the doping dependence of the upper critical field $H_{c,2}$ in 50 nm thick YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ films. The films are untwinned and are characterized by a small in-plane compressive strain. We find that the $H_{c,2}$ shows a strong decrease in the underdoped region of the phase diagram, in agreement with what has been measured in relaxed single crystals. The origin of the decrease of $H_{c,2}$ in the underdoped regime is discussed within a scenario where charge density wave order competes with superconductivity. This demonstrates the potential of using thin films …
The doping dependence of the critical current density, $J_{c}$, was measured in a series of high quality c-axis oriented ${\rm Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+δ}}$ thin films. For each doping level we measured the temperature dependence of $J_{c}$. We find that all samples have the same temperature dependence, but the critical current at zero temperature, $J_{c}(0)$, has a non-trivial doping dependence with a maximum at a unique doping level in the overdoped side of the superconducting dome.
Fe-sheathed MgB2 tapes with cheap stearic acid, Mg stearate and Zn stearate doping were prepared through the in situ powder-in-tube method. It is found that Jc, Hirr, and Hc2 were significantly enhanced by doping. Compared to the pure tapes, Jc for all the doped samples was improved by more than an order of magnitude in a high-field regime. At 4.2 K, the transport Jc reached 2.02x10^4 A/cm^2 at 10 T for the Zn stearate doped tapes and 3.72x10^3 A/cm^2 at 14 T for the stearic acid doped samples, respectively, equivalent to that of tapes achieved by nanoscale SiC or carbon doping. The improvemen…
Large high-quality single crystals of hole-doped iron-based superconductor (Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$)Fe$_2$As$_2$ were grown over a broad composition range $0.22 \leq x \leq 1$ by inverted temperature gradient method. We found that high soaking temperature, fast cooling rate, and adjusted temperature window of the growth are necessary to obtain single crystals of heavily K doped crystals (0.65$\leq x \leq$ 0.92) with narrow compositional distributions as revealed by sharp superconducting transitions in magnetization measurements and close to 100% superconducting volume fraction. The crystals were exten…
In the present study, La-doped MgB_2 superconductors with different doping level (Mg1-xLaxB2; x=0.00, 0.01, 0.03 & 0.05) have been synthesized by solid-state reaction route at ambient pressure. Effect of La doping have been investigated in relation to microstructural characteristics and superconducting properties, particularly intragrain critical current density (Jc). The microstructural characteristics of the as synthesized Mg(La)B2 compounds were studied employing transmission electron microscopic (TEM) technique. The TEM investigations reveal inclusion of LaB6 nanoparticles within the MgB2 …
Evidence is presented from the scaling of the Knight shift, entropy and transport properties together with the sharp peaking of condensation energy, critical currents, superfluid density and a variety of other physical properties for the occurrence of a common critical doping point in lightly overdoped high-Tc superconductors (HTS). This critical doping lies at the point where the doping-dependent normal-state pseudogap energy, Eg, falls to zero and bears a strong, though incomplete, resemblance to a quantum critical point (QCP). A QCP scenario could lead directly to an explanation of the non-…
The doping and temperature dependence of the thermodynamic properties in cuprate superconductors is studied based on the kinetic energy driven superconducting mechanism. By considering the interplay between the superconducting gap and normal-state pseudogap, the some main features of the doping and temperature dependence of the specific-heat, the condensation energy, and the upper critical field are well reproduced. In particular, it is shown that in analogy to the domelike shape of the doping dependence of the superconducting transition temperature, the maximal upper critical field occurs aro…
We report effects of local magnetic moment, Gd3+, doping (x =< 0.3) on superconducting and magnetic properties of the closely related Lu(1-x)GdxNi2B2C and Y(1-x)GdxNi2B2C series. The superconducting transition temperature decreases and the heat capacity jump associated with it drops rapidly with Gd-doping; qualitative changes with doping are also observed in the temperature-dependent upper critical field behavior, and a region of coexistence of superconductivity and spin-glass state is delineated on the x - T phase diagram. The evolution of superconducting properties can be understood within A…
Critical current density (Jc) is one of the major limiting factors for high field applications of iron-based superconductors. Here, we report that Mn-ions are successfully incorporated into nontoxic superconducting (Li,Fe)OHFeSe films. Remarkably, the Jc is significantly enhanced from 0.03 to 0.32 MA/cm^2 under 33 T, and the vortex pinning force density monotonically increases up to 106 GN/m^3, which is the highest record so far among all iron-based superconductors. Our results demonstrate that Mn incorporation is an effective method to optimize the performance of (Li,Fe)OHFeSe films, offering…
The doping dependence of the superconducting condensate density, n_{s}^{o}, has been studied by muon-spin-rotation for Y_{0.8}Ca_{0.2}Ba_{2}(Cu_{1-z}Zn_{z})_{3}O_{7-δ} and Tl_{0.5-y}Pb_{0.5+y}Sr_{2}Ca_{1-x}Y_{x}Cu_{2}O_{7}. We find that n_{s}^{o} exhibits a pronounced peak at a unique doping state in the slightly overdoped regime. Its position coincides with the critical doping state where the normal state pseudogap first appears depleting the electronic density of states. A surprising correlation between n_{s}^{o} and the condensation energy U_{o} is observed which suggests unconventional beh…
In doped SrTiO$_{3}$ superconductivity persists down to an exceptionally low concentration of mobile electrons. This restricts the relevant energy window and possible pairing scenarios. We present a study of quantum oscillations and superconducting transition temperature, $T_{c}$ as the carrier density is tuned from $10^{17}$ to $10^{20}$ $cm^{-3}$ and identify two critical doping levels corresponding to the filling thresholds of the upper bands. At the first critical doping, which separates the single-band and the two-band superconducting regimes in oxygen-deficient samples, the steady increa…
We study the concentration dependence of the superconducting critical temperature Tc in a boron-doped diamond. We evaluate the density of states at Fermi level within the dynamical cluster approximation obtaining higher values than from the coherent potential approximation. We discuss the Tc as a function of density of states within the BCS, the McMillan, and the Belitz theory. The simplified Belitz theory gives the best agreement with experimental data. Since the density of states follows a simple power-law for accessible doping concetrations, the present theory offers an analytical formula f…
Phase-pure polycrystalline Ba0.6K0.4+xFe2As2 with were prepared using a one-step solid-state reaction method. We found that over-doping of potassium can improve critical current density (Jc). High-field Jc for samples with x = 0.1 is three times higher than that for samples with x = 0. Over-doping of K has minimal effect on the critical transition temperature (Tc). Less than 0.5 K degradations in Tc was measured for samples with x = 0.1. TEM revealed high concentration of dislocations in samples with x = 0.1, resulting in enhanced flux pining. Further analyses on magnetization loops for powder…
We apply a recently-developed low-field technique to inductively measure the critical pair momentum $p_c$ in thin, underdoped films of Y$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$Ba$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ and Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$ reflecting a wide range of hole doping. We observe that $p_c \propto \hbar/ξ$ scales with $T_c$ and therefore superfluid density $n_s(T\rightarrow0)$ in our two-dimensional cuprate films. This relationship was famously predicted by a universal model of the cuprates with a \textit{doping-independent} superconducting gap, but has not been observed by high field measurements of the …
Strongly correlated materials often undergo a Mott metal-insulator transition, which is tipically first-order, as a function of control parameters like pressure. Upon doping, rich phase diagrams with competing instabilities are found. Yet, the conceptual link between the interaction-driven Mott transition and the finite-doping behavior lacks a clear connection with the theory of critical phenomena. In a prototypical case of a first-order Mott transition the surface associated with the equation of state for the homogeneous system is "folded" so that in a range of parameters stable metallic and …
With the relatively high critical temperature (Tc) of 39 K1 and the high critical current density (Jc) of > 100000 A/cm2 in moderate fields, magnesium diboride (MgB2) superconductors could offer the promise of important large-scale and electronic device applications to be operated at 20 K. A significant enhancement in the electromagnetic properties of MgB2 has been achieved through doping with various form of carbon (C). However, doping effect has been limited by the agglomeration of nano-sized dopants and the poor reactivity of C containing dopants with MgB2. Un-reacted dopants result in a re…
The effect of doping MgB2 with carbon nanotubes on transition temperature, lattice parameters, critical current density and flux pinning was studied for MgB2-xCx with x = 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3. The carbon substitution for B was found to enhance Jc in magnetic fields but depress Tc. The depression of Tc, which is caused by the carbon substitution for B, increases with increasing doping level, sintering temperature and duration. By controlling the extent of the substitution and addition of carbon nanotubes we can achieve the optimal improvement on critical current density and flux pinning in…
The superconductivity precursor phenomena in high temperature cuprate superconductors was studied by direct measurements of superconducting condensate with the use of the $c$-axis optical conductivity of YBa$_{2}$(Cu$_{1-x}$Zn$_{x}$)$_{3}$O$_{y}$ for several doping levels ($p$) as well as for several Zn-concentrations. Both of the real and imaginary part of the optical conductivity clearly showed that the superconducting carriers persist up to the high temperatures $T$$_{p}$ that is higher than the critical temperature $T$$_{c}$ but lower than the pseudogap temperature $T$$^{\ast}$. $T$$_{p}$ …
Pure phases of a new oxyarsenide superconductor of the nominal composition CeOFe0.9Co0.1As was successfully synthesized by solid state reaction in sealed silica ampoules at 1180 C. It crystallizes in the layered tetragonal ZrCuSiAs type structure (sp gp P4/nmm) with lattice parameter of a = 3.9918(5) angstrom and c = 8.603(1) angstrom. A sharp superconducting transition is observed at 11.31 K with an upper critical field of 45.22 T at ambient pressure. The superconducting transition temperature is drastically lowered (~ 4.5, 4.9 K) on increasing the concentration (x = 0.15, 0.2) of cobalt.
Arsenic doping in silicides has been much less studied compared with phosphorus. In this study, superconductivity is successfully induced by As doping in Mo$_5$Si$_3$. The superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) reaches 7.7 K, which is higher than those in previously known W$_5$Si$_3$-type superconductors. Mo$_5$Si$_2$As is a type-II BCS superconductor with upper and lower critical fields of 6.65 T and 22.4 mT, respectively. In addition, As atoms are found to selectively take the 8$h$ sites in Mo$_5$Si$_2$As. The emergence of superconductivity is possibly due to the shift of Fermi level…
We calculate the effect of a static electric field on the critical temperature of a s-wave one band superconductor in the framework of proximity effect Eliashberg theory. In the weak electrostatic field limit the theory has no free parameters while, in general, the only free parameter is the thickness of the surface layer where the electric field acts. We conclude that the best situation for increasing the critical temperature is to have a very thin film of a superconducting material with a strong increase of electron-phonon (boson) constant upon charging.
We explore the Matsubara quasiparticle fraction and the pseudogap of the two-dimensional Hubbard model with the dynamical cluster quantum Monte Carlo method. The character of the quasiparticle fraction changes from non-Fermi liquid, to marginal Fermi liquid to Fermi liquid as a function of doping, indicating the presence of a quantum critical point separating non-Fermi liquid from Fermi liquid character. Marginal Fermi liquid character is found at low temperatures at a very narrow range of doping where the single-particle density of states is also symmetric. At higher doping the character of t…
Application of a significantly large bias voltage to small Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x mesa structures leads to persistent doping of the mesas. Here we employ this effect for analysis of the doping dependence of the electronic spectra of Bi-2212 single crystals by means of intrinsic tunneling spectroscopy. We are able to controllably and reversibly change the doping state of the same single crystal from underdoped to overdoped state, without changing its chemical composition. It is observed that such physical doping is affecting superconductivity in Bi-2212 similar to chemical doping by oxygen impurities:…
By systematic chemical substitution of Pt and Ni in the newly-discovered superconductor Nb$_2$PdS$_5$ ($T_c\sim$6 K), we study the evolution of its superconducting properties with doping, focussing on the behavior of the upper critical field $H_{c2}$. In contrast to the previous results of Se doping on S sites, superconductivity is found to be rather robust against the Pt and Ni dopants on the one-dimensional Pd chains. Most strikingly, the reduced $H_{c2}$, i.e., the ratio of $H_{c2}/T_c$, is seen to be significantly enhanced by the heavier Pt doping but suppressed in the Ni-doped counterpart…
We have studied structural and superconducting properties of MgB2 thin films doped with carbon during the hybrid physical-chemical vapor deposition process. A carbon-containing metalorganic precursor bis(cyclopentadienyl)magnesium was added to the carrier gas to achieve carbon doping. As the amount of carbon in the films increases, the resistivity increases, Tc decreases, and the upper critical field increases dramatically as compared to the clean films. The self-field Jc in the carbon-doped films is lower than that in the clean films, but Jc remains relatively high to much higher magnetic fie…
The critical doping levels in cuprates, where the ground state changes its nature (from an antiferromagnet to a spin glass to superconductor to metal), are not universal. We investigate the origin of these critical doping variations by measuring the in-plane oxygen $p_σ$ hole density in the CuO$_{2}$ layers as a function of the oxygen density $y$ in (Ca$_{x}$ La$_{1-x}$)(Ba$_{1.75-x}$La$_{0.25+x}$)Cu$_{3}$O$_{y}$. This is done using the oxygen 17 nuclear quadrupole resonance parameter $ν_{Q}$. We compare compounds with $x=0.1$ and 0.4 which have significant critical $y$ variations and find tha…
Fe-sheathed MgB2 tapes were prepared through the in situ powder-in-tube technique by 5 at.% ZrSi2, ZrB2 and WSi2 doping, respectively. The doping effect of these compounds on the microstructure and superconducting properties of MgB2 tapes has been investigated by using x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, transport measurements and DC susceptibility measurements. Compared to the undoped samples, Jc for all the doped samples were much improved; the best result in terms of Jc was achieved for ZrSi2 doping, by up to a factor of 3.4 at 4.2 K in magnetic fields up to 12 T. Moreover, the…
Recent data on the critical events accompanying the quenching of the pseudogap (PG) phase in hole-doped cuprates are analysed. An original multiband model with the spectrum influenced by doping has been used. Two critical dopings are expected in evolving of the PG to destruction. The first of them corresponds to metallization (antinodal) of the sample. Extended doping leads to a second critical point where the PG is lost. In between the restoration of the full Fermi surface proceeds. Band overlaps besides the location of the chemical potential (μ) are decisive.
We investigate the origin of superconductivity in doped SrTiO$_3$ (STO) using a combination of density functional and strong coupling theories within the framework of quantum criticality. Our density functional calculations of the ferroelectric soft mode frequency as a function of doping reveal a crossover from quantum paraelectric to ferroelectric behavior at a doping level coincident with the experimentally observed top of the superconducting dome. Based on this finding, we explore a model in which the superconductivity in STO is enabled by its proximity to the ferroelectric quantum critical…
We study the isovalent substitution effect by partially introducing Se on S site in the newly discovered superconductor Nb$_2$PdS$_5$ ($T_c\sim$6 K) whose upper critical field is found to be far above its Pauli paramagnetic limit. In this Nb$_2$Pd(S$_{1-x}$Se$_x$)$_5$ (0$\leq$$x$$\leq$0.8) system, superconductivity is systematically suppressed by the Se concentration and ultimately disappears when $x\geq$ 0.5, after which a semiconducting-like ground state emerges. In spite of the considerably reduced $T_c$ with Se doping, the ratio of the upper critical field $H_{c2}$ to $T_c$, remains unaffe…
We report the impact of Ni doping on superconductivity of PdTe superconductor. The superconducting parameters like critical temperature (Tc), upper critical field (Hc2) and normalized specific-heat jump are reported for Ni doped Pd1-xNixTe. The samples of series Pd1-xNixTe with nominal compositions x=0, .01, 0.05, 0.07, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2, 0.3 and 1.0 are synthesized via solid state reaction route. All the studied samples of series Pd1-xNixTe (x = 0.0 to 1.0) are crystallized in hexagonal crystal structure within the space group P63/mmc. Unit cell volume shrinks almost linearly upon Ni doping in P…
A comprehensive study of the effects of carbohydrate doping on the superconductivity of MgB2 has been conducted. In accordance with the dual reaction model, more carbon substitution is achieved at lower sintering temperature. As the sintering temperature is lowered, lattice disorder is increased. Disorder is an important factor determining the transition temperature for the samples studied in this work, as evidenced from the correlations among the lattice strain, the resistivity and the transition temperature. It is further shown that the increased critical current density in the high field re…
In this work, we present the following important results: 1) We introduce a new Si source, liquid SiCl4, which is free of C, to significantly enhance the irreversibility field (Hirr), the upper critical field (Hc2), and the critical current density (Jc), with little reduction in the critical temperature (Tc). 2) Although Si can not incorporate into the crystal lattice, we found a reduction in the a-axis lattice parameter, to the same extent as for carbon doping. 3) The SiCl4 treated MgB2 shows much higher Jc with superior field dependence above 20 K than undoepd MgB2 and MgB2 doped with variou…
The strong coupling of superconductivity to the orthorhombic distortion in YBa2Cu3O7-d makes possible an analysis of the superconducting fluctuations without the necessity of subtracting any background. The present high-resolution capacitance dilatometry data unambiguously demonstrate the existence of critical, instead of Gaussian, fluctuations over a wide temperature region (+/- 10 K) around Tc. The values of the amplitude ratio A+/A-=0.9-1.1 and the leading scaling exponent |alpha|<0.018, determined via a least-squares fit of the data, are consistent with the 3D-XY universality class. Small …
Critical current measurements were made on thin films of YBa2Cu3O7-delta and Y0.8Ca0.2Ba2Cu3O7-delta produced by sol-gel and pulsed laser deposition, respectively. Both samples have high critical currents at low temperatures and the critical current, Jc, is largest in the overdoped Y0.8Ca0.2Ba2Cu3O7-delta thin film. Annealing studies show a large increase in Jc with increasing hole concentration and suggests that the maximum Jc should occur for overdoped samples. The very overdoped region of the superconducting phase diagram was probed by studying bulk ceramic Y0.8Ca0.2Ba2Cu3O7-delta samples, …
We present the evolution of the structural, electronic, and lattice dynamical properties, as well as the electron-phonon coupling and superconducting critical temperature ($T_c$) of ScH$_2$ and YH$_2$ metal hydrides solid solutions, as a function of the electron- and hole-doping content. The study was performed within the density functional perturbation theory, taking into account the effect of zero-point energy through the quasi-harmonic approximation, and the solid solutions Sc$_{1-x}M_{x}$H$_{2}$ ($M$=Ca,Ti) and Y$_{1-x}M_{x}$H$_{2}$ ($M$=Sr,Zr) were modeled by the virtual crystal approxima…
The unconventional normal-state properties of the cuprates are often discussed in terms of emergent electronic order that onsets below a putative critical doping of xc = 0.19. Charge-density wave (CDW) correlations represent one such order; however, experimental evidence for such order generally spans a limited range of doping that falls short of the critical value xc, leading to questions regarding its essential relevance. Here, we use x-ray diffraction to demonstrate that CDW correlations in La2-xSrxCuO4 persist up to a doping of at least x = 0.21. The correlations show strong changes throug…
We show that the doping-controlled superconductor-insulator transition (SIT) in a high critical temperature cuprate system (Bi2Sr2-xLaxCaCu2O8+delta) exhibits a fundamentally different behavior than is expected from conventional SIT. At the critical doping, the sheet resistance seems to diverge in the zero temperature limit. Above the critical doping, the transport is universally scaled by a two-component conductance model. Below, it continuously evolves from weakly to strongly insulating behavior. The two-component conductance model suggests that a collective electronic phase separation mecha…
By performing P doping on the Si sites in the topological semimetal Mo$_5$Si$_3$, we discover strong-coupling superconductivity in Mo$_5$Si$_{3-x}$P$_x$ (0.5 $\le$ $x$ $\le$ 2.0). Mo$_5$Si$_3$ crystallizes in the W$_5$Si$_3$-type structure with space group of $I4/mcm$ (No. 140), and is not a superconductor itself. Upon P doping, the lattice parameter $a$ decreases while $c$ increases monotonously. Bulk superconductivity is revealed in Mo$_5$Si$_{3-x}$P$_x$ (0.5 $\le$ $x$ $\le$ 2.0) from resistivity, magnetization, and heat capacity measurements. $T_c$ in Mo$_5$Si$_{1.5}$P$_{1.5}$ reaches as hi…
Measurements of the critical current density (Jc) by magnetization and the upper critical field (Hc2) by magnetoresistance have been performed for hafnium-doped MgB2. There has been a remarkable enhancement of Jc as compared to that by ion irradiation without any appreciable decrease in Tc, which is beneficial from the point of view of applications. The irreversibility line extracted from Jc shows an upward shift. In addition, there has been an increase in the upper critical field which indicates that Hf partially substitutes for Mg. Hyperfine interaction parameters obtained from time differen…
The 3D phase diagram of iron pnictides where the critical temperature depends on charge density and microstrain in the active FeAs layers is proposed. The iron pnictides superconductors are shown to be a practical realization of a heterostructure at the atomic limit made of a superlattice of FeAs layers intercalated by spacer layers. We have focussed our interest on the A 1-x BxFe2As2 (122) families and we show that FeAs layers have a tensile microstrain due to the misfit strain between the active layers and the spacers. We have identified the critical range of doping and microstrain where the…
Identifying quantum critical points (QCPs) and their associated fluctuations may hold the key to unraveling the unusual electronic phenomena observed in cuprate superconductors. Recently, signatures of quantum fluctuations associated with charge order (CO) have been inferred from the anomalous enhancement of CO excitations that accompany the reduction of the CO order parameter in the superconducting state. To gain more insight about the interplay between CO and superconductivity, here we investigate the doping dependence of this phenomenon throughout the Bi-2212 cuprate phase diagram using res…
We analyze doping dependent spectral intensities and Fermi surface maps obtained recently in Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_{4\pmδ}$ (NCCO) via high resolution ARPES measurements, and show that the behavior of this electron-doped compound can be understood as the closing of a Mott (pseudo) gap, leading to a quantum critical point just above optimal doping. The doping dependence of the effective Hubbard $U$ adduced by comparing theoretical and experimental spectra is in resonable accord with various estimates and a simple screening calculation.
We present details of synthesis optimization and physical properties of nearly single phase carbon doped MgB2 with a nominal stoichiometry of Mg(B{0.8}C{0.2})2 synthesized from magnesium and boron carbide (B4C) as starting materials. The superconducting transition temperature is ~ 22 K (~ 17 K lower than in pure MgB2). The temperature dependence of the upper critical field is steeper than in pure MgB2 with Hc2(10K) ~ 9 T. Temperature dependent specific heat data taken in different applied magnetic fields suggest that the two-gap nature of superconductivity is still preserved for carbon doped M…
Two sets of MgB2 samples doped with up to 5 at. % of Al were prepared in different laboratories using different procedures. Decreases in the a and c lattice parameters were observed with Al doping confirming Al substitution onto the Mg site. The critical temperature (Tc) remained largely unchanged with Al doping. For 1 - 2.5 at.% doping, at 20K the in-field critical current densities (Jc's) were enhanced, particularly at lower fields. At 5K, in-field Jc was markedly improved, e.g. at 5T Jc was enhanced by a factor of 20 for a doping level of 1 at.% Al. The improved Jcs correlate with increased…
