Pure phases of a new oxyarsenide superconductor of the nominal composition CeOFe0.9Co0.1As was successfully synthesized by solid state reaction in sealed silica ampoules at 1180 C. It crystallizes in the layered tetragonal ZrCuSiAs type structure (sp gp P4/nmm) with lattice parameter of a = 3.9918(5) angstrom and c = 8.603(1) angstrom. A sharp superconducting transition is observed at 11.31 K with an upper critical field of 45.22 T at ambient pressure. The superconducting transition temperature is drastically lowered (~ 4.5, 4.9 K) on increasing the concentration (x = 0.15, 0.2) of cobalt.
Using state-of-the-art first-principles calculations we study the magnetic behaviour of CeOFeAs. We find the Ce layer moments oriented perpendicular to those of the Fe layers. An analysis of incommensurate magnetic structures reveals that the Ce-Ce magnetic coupling is rather weak with, however, a strong Fe-Ce coupling. Comparison of the origin of the tetragonal to orthorhombic structural distortion in CeOFeAs and LaOFeAs show marked differences; in CeOFeAs the distortion is stabilized by a lowering of spectral weight at the Fermi level, while in LaOFeAs by a reduction in magnetic frustration.…
We have systematically studied the substitution of nonmagnetic Zn and magnetic Ni at iron sites in Ce based oxypnictide. The parent compound (CeOFeAs) shows an anomaly in resistivity around 150 K due to structural transition from tetragonal (space group: P4/nmm) to orthorhombic structure (space group: Cmma). Substitution of Zn suppresses this anomaly to lower temperature (~130 K) but Ni substitution does not show any anomaly around this temperature and the compound behaves like a metal. Further, we find that non magnetic (Zn) doping leads to higher impurity scattering as compared to magnetic N…
Superconductivity with zero resistance transition temperature (Tc) up to 8.4 K and 8.3 K can be obtained by doping cobalt and sodium in alfa-FeSe with the nominal composition of Fe0.92Co0.08Se and Na0.1FeSe, respectively. The electrical resistivity and AC magnetic susceptibility of the prepared samples, measured with physical property measurement system (PPMS), unambiguously consistent with each other to indicate that the samples are superconductive. The respective doping mechanisms for cobalt and sodium into the parent alfa-FeSe are the Fe-site substitution and the interlayer insertion. It is…
Using a combination of neutron, muon and synchrotron techniques we show how the magnetic state in NaFeAs can be tuned into superconductivity by replacing Fe by either Co or Ni. Electron count is the dominant factor, since Ni-doping has double the effect of Co-doping for the same doping level. We follow the structural, magnetic and superconducting properties as a function of doping to show how the superconducting state evolves, concluding that the addition of 0.1 electrons per Fe atom is sufficient to traverse the superconducting domain, and that magnetic order coexists with superconductivity a…
We report thermal expansion measurements on Ca(Fe_(1-x)Co_x)_2As_2 single crystals with different thermal treatment, with samples chosen to represent four different ground states observed in this family. For all samples thermal expansion is anisotropic with different signs of the in-plane and c-axis thermal expansion coefficients in the high temperature, tetragonal phase. The features in thermal expansion associated with the phase transitions are of opposite signs as well, pointing to a different response of transition temperatures to the in-plane and the c-axis stress. These features, and con…
In high-superconducting transition temperature ($T_{\rm c}$) iron-based superconductors, interband sign reversal ($s_{\rm \pm}$) and sign preserving ($s_{\rm ++}$) $s$-wave superconducting states have been primarily discussed as the plausible superconducting mechanism. We study Co impurity scattering effects on the superconductivity in order to achieve an important clue on the pairing mechanism using single crystal Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Se and depict a phase diagram of a FeSe system. Both superconductivity and structural transition / orbital order are suppressed by the Co replacement on the Fe sites…
Chemical doping has recently become a very important strategy to induce superconductivity especially in complex compounds. Distinguished examples include Ba-doped La$_2$CuO$_4$ (the first high temperature superconductor), K-doped BaBiO$_3$, K-doped C$_{60}$ and Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2}\cdot y$H$_{2}$O. The most recent example is F-doped LaFeAsO, which leads to a new class of high temperature superconductors. One notes that all the above dopants are non-magnetic, because magnetic atoms generally break superconducting Cooper pairs. In addition, the doping site was out of the (super)conducting structural…
We investigate the dual roles of a cobalt impurity in the Ba-122 ferropnictide superconductor in the state with coexisting collinear spin density wave (SDW) order as a dopant and as a scattering center, using first principles electronic structure methods. The Co atom is found to dope the FeAs plane where it is located with a single delocalized electron as expected, but also induces a strong perturbation of the SDW ground state of the system. This in turn induces a stripe-like modulation of the density of states in nearby planes which may be observable in STM experiments. The defect is found to…
In order to clarify the origin of anomalous superconductivity in (Ca,RE)Fe2As2 system, Pr doped and Pr,Co co-doped CaFe2As2 single crystals were grown by the FeAs flux method. These samples showed two-step superconducting transition with Tc1 = 25~42 K, and Tc2 < 16 K, suggesting that (Ca,RE)Fe2As2 system has two superconducting components. Post-annealing performed for these crystals in evacuated quartz ampoules at various temperatures revealed that post-annealing at ~400°C increased the c-axis length for all samples. This indicates that as-grown crystals have a certain level of strain, which i…
We consider possible routes to superconductivity in hydrated cobaltates Na_xCoO_2.yH_2O on the basis of the t-J-V model plus phonons on the triangular lattice. We studied the stability conditions for the homogeneous Fermi liquid (HFL) phase against different broken symmetry phases. Besides the sqrt(3)xsqrt(3)-CDW phase, triggered by the nearest-neighbour Coulomb interaction V, we have found that the HFL is unstable, at very low doping, against a bond-ordered phase due to J. We also discuss the occurrence of phase separation at low doping and V. The interplay between the electron-phonon interac…
We report a state-of-the-art photoemission (ARPES) study of high quality single crystals of the NaxCoO2 series focusing on the fine details of the low-energy states. The Fermi velocity is found to be small (< 0.5 eV.A) and only weakly anisotropic over the Fermi surface at all dopings setting the size of the pair wavefunction to be on the order of 10-20 nanometers. In the low doping regime the exchange inter-layer splitting vanishes and two dimensional collective instabilities such as 120-type fluctuations become kinematically allowed. Our results suggest that the unusually small Fermi velocity…
The layered sodium cobalt oxyhydrate superconductor Na0.3CoO2*1.4H2O is shown through X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric studies to be one of a series of hydrated phases of Na0.3CoO2. Further, it is shown that the material is exceptionally sensitive to both temperature and humidity near ambient conditions, easily dehydrating to a non-superconducting lower hydrate. The observation of this stable lower hydrate with c=13.8 angstroms implies that the superconductivity turns on in this system between CoO2 layer spacings of 6.9 and 9.9 angstroms at nominally constant chemical doping.
We report the effects of cobalt doping on the magnetic properties of two-dimensional van der Waals ferromagnet Fe3GeTe2. Single crystals of (Fe{1-x}Cox)3GeTe2 with x=0-0.78 were successfully synthesized and characterized with x-ray diffraction, energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy and magnetization measurements. Both the Curie-Weiss temperature and ferromagnetic (FM) ordered moment of Fe3GeTe2 are gradually suppressed upon Co doping. A kink in zero-field-cooling low field M(T) curve which is previously explained as an antiferromagnetic transition is observed for samples with x=0-0.58. Our deta…
We predict that the square lattice layer formed by [Co$_2$N$_2$]$^{2-}$ diamond-like units can host high temperature superconductivity. The layer appears in the stable ternary cobalt nitride, BaCo$_2$N$_2$. The electronic physics of the material stems from Co$_2$N$_2$ layers where the dimerized Co pairs form a square lattice. The low energy physics near Fermi energy can be described by an effective two orbital model. Without considering interlayer couplings, the two orbitals are effectively decoupled. This electronic structure satisfies the "gene" character proposed for unconventional high tem…
We suggest that Cobalt-Oxychalcogenide layers constructed by vertex sharing CoA$_2$O$_2$ (A=S,Se,Te) tetrahedra, such as BaCoAO, are strongly correlated multi-orbital electron systems that can provide important clues on the cause of unconventional superconductivity. Differing from cuprates and iron-based superconductors, these systems lack of the C$_4$ rotational symmetry. However, their parental compounds possess antiferromagnetic(AFM) Mott insulating states through pure superexchange interactions and the low energy physics near Fermi surfaces upon doping is also attributed mainly to the thre…
Within the charge-spin separation fermion-spin theory, we have shown that the mechanism of superconductivity in the electron doped cobaltate Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2}\cdot y$H$_{2}$O is ascribed to its kinetic energy. The dressed fermions interact occurring directly through the kinetic energy by exchanging magnetic excitations. This interaction leads to a net attractive force between dressed fermions, then the electron Cooper pairs originating from the dressed fermion pairing state are due to the charge-spin recombination, and their condensation reveals the superconducting ground state. The superconduc…
A series of layered CeO$_{1-x}$F$_x$FeAs compounds with x=0 to 0.20 are synthesized by solid state reaction method. Similar to the LaOFeAs, the pure CeOFeAs shows a strong resistivity anomaly near 145 K, which was ascribed to the spin-density-wave instability. F-doping suppresses this instability and leads to the superconducting ground state. Most surprisingly, the superconducting transition temperature could reach as high as 41 K. The very high superconducting transition temperature strongly challenges the classic BCS theory based on the electron-phonon interaction. The very closeness of the …
We report Raman scattering spectra of iron-pnictide superconductor Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ single crystals with varying cobalt $x$ content. Upon cooling through the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic transition, we observe a large splitting of the E$_g$ in-plane phonon modes involving Fe and As displacements. The splitting of the in-plane phonons at the transition is strongly reduced upon doping and disappears for $x=0.06$ qualitatively following the trend displayed by the Fe magnetic moment. The origin of the splitting is discussed in terms of magnetic frustration inherent to iron-pnictide sys…
Point contact spectroscopy (PCS) is a technique which can reveal the size and symmetry of a superconducting gap ($Δ$) and is especially useful for new materials such as the iron-based superconductors. PCS is usually employed in conjunction with the extended Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk (BTK) model which is used to extract information such as the existence of nodes in $Δ$ from PCS data obtained on unconventional superconductors. The BTK model uses a dimensionless parameter $Z$ to quantify the barrier strength across a normal metal - superconductor junction. We have used a unique feature of PCS whic…
We present here high resolution magnetization measurements on high-quality BaFe$_{2(1-x)}$Co$_{2x}$As$_{2}$, 0$\leq$x$\leq$0.046 as-grown single crystals. The results confirm the existence of a magnetic tricritical point in the ($x$,$T$) plane at x$^{m}_{tr}$$\approx$0.022 and reveal the emergence of the heat capacity anomaly associated with the onset of the structural transition at x$^{s}$$\approx$0.0064. We show that the samples with doping near x$^{m}_{tr}$ do not show superconductivity, but rather superconductivity emerges at a slightly higher cobalt doping, x$\approx$0.0315
We report the successful substitution of cobalt, nickel, and copper for iron in the 1038 phase parent compound Ca$_{10}$(FeAs)$_{10}$(Pt$_3$As$_8$) yielding Ca$_{10}$(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$As)$_{10}$(Pt$_3$As$_8$), Ca$_{10}$(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$As)$_{10}$(Pt$_3$As$_8$), and Ca$_{10}$(Fe$_{1-x}$Cu$_x$As)$_{10}$(Pt$_3$As$_8$), respectively. Superconductivity is induced in Co and Ni doped compounds reaching critical temperatures up to 15 K, similar to known Pt substituted Ca$_{10}$(Fe$_{1-x}$Pt$_x$As)$_{10}$(Pt$_3$As$_8$), whereas no superconductivity was detected in Ca$_{10}$(Fe$_{1-x}$Cu$_x$As)$_{10}$(Pt…
We report the effect of 3d metal Cobalt (Co) and Nickel (Ni) doping on the FeTe0.5Se0.5 superconductor with the nominal composition range Fe1-xMxTe0.5Se0.5 (M = Co, Ni and x = 0.00, 0.01 0.02, 0.05, and 0.10). Samples are synthesized through standard solid state reaction route and all are crystallize in single phase tetragonal structure with space group P4nmm. The lattice parameters 'a', 'c' and volume decrease with increase in Co and Ni content, although not monotonically. In fact the 'a' lattice parameter of Co doped samples is nearly unaffected for Co doped samples. The superconducting tran…
It has been considered that FeAs-based high transition temperature (high-Tc) superconductors need electron or hole doping by aliovalent ion substitution or large off-stoichiometry in order to induce superconductivity. We report that exposure of undoped SrFe2As2 epitaxial thin films to water vapor induces a superconducting transition. These films exhibit a higher onset-Tc (25 K) and larger magnetic field anisotropy than those of cobalt-doped SrFe2As2 epitaxial films, suggesting that the mechanism for the observed superconducting transition differs from that of the aliovalent-ion doped SrFe2As2.…
The relationship between unconventional superconductivity, antiferromagnetism and nematic order in iron-based superconductors (FeSCs) is still highly debated. In many FeSCs superconductivity is in proximity of a nematically and magnetically ordered state. LiFeAs is an exceptional stoichiometric FeSC becoming superconducting below 18 K, without undergoing a structural or magnetic transition. However, some recent experimental studies suggested the existence of finite nematic fluctuations and even a nematic superconducting state. In this study, we employ elastoresistance as a measure of nematic f…

Single crystals of mixed alkaline earth metal iron arsenide materials of Ba1-xSrxFe2As2 and Ba0.5Sr0.5(Fe1-yCoy)2As2 are synthesized via the self-flux method. Ba1-xSrxFe2As2 display spin-density wave features (TN) at temperatures intermediate to the parent materials, x = 0 and 1, with TN(x) following an approximately linear trend. Cobalt doping of the 1 to 1 Ba:Sr mixture, Ba0.5Sr0.5(Fe1-yCoy)2As2, results in a superconducting dome with maximum transition temperature of TC = 19 K at y = 0.092, close to the maximum transition temperatures observed in unmixed A(Fe1-yCoy)2As2; however, an anneale…
The effects of Co-substitution on Ba(Ni$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ ($0\leq x\leq 0.251$) single crystals grown out of Pb flux are investigated via transport, magnetic, and thermodynamic measurements. BaNi$_2$As$_2$ exhibits a first order tetragonal to triclinic structural phase transition at $T_s=137 K$ upon cooling, and enters a superconducting phase below $T_c=0.7 K$. The structural phase transition is sensitive to cobalt content and is suppressed completely by $x\geq0.133$. The superconducting critical temperature, $T_c$, increases continuously with $x$, reaching a maximum of $T_c=2.3 K$ at t…
