Recent data on the critical events accompanying the quenching of the pseudogap (PG) phase in hole-doped cuprates are analysed. An original multiband model with the spectrum influenced by doping has been used. Two critical dopings are expected in evolving of the PG to destruction. The first of them corresponds to metallization (antinodal) of the sample. Extended doping leads to a second critical point where the PG is lost. In between the restoration of the full Fermi surface proceeds. Band overlaps besides the location of the chemical potential (μ) are decisive.
We generalize the dynamical - mean field theory (DMFT) by including into the DMFT equations dependence on correlation length of pseudogap fluctuations via additional (momentum dependent) self - energy. This self - energy describes non - local dynamical correlations induced by short - ranged collective SDW - like antiferromagnetic spin (or CDW - like charge) fluctuations. At high enough temperatures these fluctuations can be viewed as a quenched Gaussian random field with finite correlation length. This generalized DMFT+Σ_k approach is used for the numerical solution of the weakly doped one - b…
The pseudogap (PG) excitations in the framework of multiband superconductivity are analysed. Calculations for the doping phase diagram of electron-doped cuprate superconductors have been made. A nonrigid multiband model has been used. The interband pairing acts between the upper Hubbard band (UHB) and midgap states created (and shifted upwards) by doping. The appearance of two PG and two phase diagram critical points (CP) is suggested. The larger antinodal PG reflects the destruction of the long-range antiferromagnetic (AF) order. The second, smaller PG is a near-nodal event with exposed dopin…
I begin by briefly reviewing various experimental results on the pseudogap phenomena in underdoped cuprates. I argue that, taken together, all of these lead to a picture of singlet pairing above $T_c$. I then explore the idea that the pseudogap is a normal state precursor of the superconducting gap due to local, dynamic pairing correlations in a state without long range phase coherence. Early work on simple model systems which exhibit pseudogap anomalies in the normal state of 2D superconductors in a low density, small pair size regime is reviewed and critically re-examined in view of more rec…
Starting from the simplified analytic model of electronic spectrum of iron - pnictogen (chalcogen) high - temperature superconductors close to the Fermi level, we discuss the influence of antiferromagneting (AFM)scattering both for stoichiometric case and the region of possible short - range order AFM fluctuations in doped compounds. Qualitative picture of the evolution of electronic spectrum and Fermi surfaces (FS) for different dopings is presented, with the aim of comparison with existing and future ARPES experiments. Both electron and hole dopings are considered and possible pseudogap beha…
The impact of the normal-state pseudogap, present in all optimal and underdoped HTS cuprates, on critical currents and critical temperature is surveyed. With the opening of the pseudogap around a doping state of p=0.19 the condensation energy and superfluid density are rapidly suppressed due to reduction in the normal-state spectral weight. Even by optimal doping (p=0.16) these measures of the 'strength' of superconductivity are diminished by up to 40%. This results in a sharp reduction in critical currents and irreversibility field, respectively. The optimal doping state where these propertie…
We reply to the objections raised in a recent Comment (arXiv:1706.03023) regarding our observation of slow magnetic fluctuations and critical slowing down of magnetic fluctuations in the pseudogap phase of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ by zero-field and longitudinal-field muon spin relaxation (arXiv:1703.06799).
A recent zero-field (ZF) and longitudinal-field (LF) muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) study of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ [Jian~Zhang {\it et al.}, arXiv:1709.06799] claims to have detected critical slowing down of magnetic fluctuations near the pseudogap temperature $T^*$, and attribute this to the onset of slow fluctuating domains of intra-unit-cell magnetic order. Here it is argued that the relaxation data displayed in this study are misleading due to an improper account of the nuclear dipole contribution and a failure to acknowledge the occurrence of muon diffusion.
We investigate the evolution of superconductivity with decreasing film thickness in ultrathin amorphous MoGe (a-MoGe) films using a combination of sub-Kelvin scanning tunneling spectroscopy, magnetic penetration depth measurements and magneto-transport measurements. We observe that superconductivity is strongly affected by quantum and classical phase fluctuations for thickness below 5 nm. The superfluid density is strongly suppressed by quantum phase fluctuations at low temperatures and evolves towards a linear-T dependence at higher temperatures. This is associated with a rapid decrease in th…
Critical fluctuations have been studied in the microwave conductivity of Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_(8+δ), Bi_2Sr_2Ca_2Cu_3O_(10+delta), and YBa_2Cu_3O_(7-delta) thin films above T_c. It is found that a consistent analysis of the real and imaginary parts of the fluctuation conductivity can be achieved only if an appropriate wavevector or energy cutoff in the fluctuation spectrum is taken into account. In all of the three underdoped superconducting films one observes strong fluctuations extending far above T_c. The coherence length inferred from the imaginary part of the conductivity exhibits the static c…
We report systematic 17O-NMR measurements on the high-Tc cuprate (Ca_xLa_{1-x})(Ba_{1.75 - x}La_{0.25 + x})Cu_3O_y, for four different families (different x). Using Knight shift data, we show that the pseudogap lines for all families are inconsistent with a quantum critical point inside the superconducting dome. In addition, at constant doping the pseudogap temperature does not vary with x, in contrast to Tc. We therefore argue that pseudogap and superconductivity are separate phenomena in these cuprates. Using Knight shift data, we show that the pseudogap opening temperature T* is much higher…
We experimentally study transport and intrinsic tunneling characteristics of a single-layer cuprate Bi(2+x)Sr(2-y)CuO(6+delta) with a low superconducting critical temperature Tc < 4 K. It is observed that the superconducting energy, critical field and fluctuation temperature range are scaling down with Tc, while the corresponding pseudogap characteristics have the same order of magnitude as for high-Tc cuprates with 20 to 30 times higher Tc. The observed disparity of the superconducting and pseudogap scales clearly reveals their different origins.
We show by means of the theory of the order parameter phase fluctuations that the temperature of "closing" (or "opening") of the gap (and pseudogap) in the electron spectra of superconductors with anisotropic order parameter takes place within a finite temperature range. Every Fourier-component of the order parameter has its own critical temperature.
Five transport coefficients of the cuprate superconductor Bi$_2$Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$CuO$_{6+δ}$ were measured in the normal state down to low temperature, reached by applying a magnetic field (up to 66T) large enough to suppress superconductivity. The electrical resistivity, Hall coefficient, thermal conductivity, Seebeck coefficient and thermal Hall conductivity were measured in two overdoped single crystals, with La concentration $x = 0.2$ ($T_{\rm c}=18$K) and $x = 0.0$ ($T_{\rm c}=10$K). The samples have dopings $p$ very close to the critical doping $p^{\star}$ where the pseudogap phase ends. …
We study the effect of critical pairing fluctuations on the electronic properties in the normal state of a clean superconductor in three dimensions. Using a functional renormalization group approach to take the non-Gaussian nature of critical fluctuations into account, we show microscopically that in the BCS regime, where the inverse coherence length is much smaller than the Fermi wavevector, critical pairing fluctuations give rise to a non-analytic contribution to the quasi-particle damping of order $ T_c \sqrt{Gi} \ln ( 80 / Gi )$, where the Ginzburg-Levanyuk number $Gi$ is a dimensionless m…
We examine the role of the anisotropy of superconducting thermal critical fluctuations in the opening of pseudogaps in quasi-two dimensions. When the anisotropy of coherence or correlation lengths of the fluctuations is large enough and critical temperatures T_c are high enough, the energy dependence of the selfenergy deviates from that of Landau's normal Fermi liquid in critical regions; its imaginary part has no minimum at the chemical potential. Prominent pseudogaps open in such a non-Fermi liquid phase. Pseudogaps must be absent or subtle in quasi-two dimensional superconductors with low T…
The existence of a pseudogap above the critical temperature has been widely used to explain the anomalous behaviour of the normal state of high-temperature superconductors. In two dimensions the existence of a pseudogap phase has already been demonstrated in a simple model. It can now be shown that the pseudogap phase persists even for the more realistic case where coherent interlayer tunneling is taken into account. The effective anisotropy is surprisingly large and even increases with increasing carrier density.
We investigate the upper critical field in a stripe--phase and in the presence of a phenomenological pseudogap. Our results indicate that the formation of stripes affects the Landau orbits and results in an enhancement of $H_{c2}$. On the other hand, phenomenologically introduced pseudogap leads to a reduction of the upper critical field. This effect is of particular importance when the magnitude of the gap is of the order of the superconducting transition temperature. We have found that a suppression of the upper critical field takes place also for the gap that originates from the charge--den…
The effect of ordering field phase fluctuations on the normal and superconducting properties of a simple 2D model with a local four-fermion attraction is studied. Neglecting the coupling between the spin and charge degrees of freedom an analytical expression has been obtained for the fermion spectral function as a single integral over a simple function. From this we show that, as the temperature increases through the 2D critical temperature and a nontrivial damping for a phase correlator develops, quantum fluctuations fill the gap in the quasiparticle spectrum. Simultaneously the quasiparticle…
A central question in the underdoped cuprates pertains to the nature of the pseudogap ground state. A conventional metallic ground state of the pseudogap region has been argued to host quantum oscillations upon destruction of the superconducting order parameter by modest magnetic fields. Here we use low applied measurement currents and millikelvin temperatures on ultra-pure single crystals of underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ to unearth an unconventional quantum vortex matter ground state characterized by vanishing electrical resistivity, magnetic hysteresis, and non-ohmic electrical transport…
Experimental data obtained from thermodynamic measurements in underdoped high temperature superconductors show unusual anomalies in the temperature dependence of the electronic specific heat both in the normal state and at the critical point associated to the superconducting phase transition. The observed deviations from the standard behavior are probably linked with the opening of a pseudogap in the energy spectrum of the single-particle excitations associated with the normal state. Based on a phenomenological description of the pseudogap phase we perform analytical and numerical calculations…
A new model of high-T_c superconductivity (HTSC) has been developed by us which we find is able to explain almost all the HTSC properties, like high T_c, origin and nature of NSPG (normal state pseudogap), anomalous superconducting state (SS) energy gap (SSEG) properties, absence of NMR spin relaxation rate coherence peak, existence of NSPG below T_c, nature of high-T_c magnetic superconductivity, external magnetic field (H) dependence of the NSPG formation temperature T*, etc. The coexistence of NSPG and SS BCS energy gap (EG), below T_C, has been predicted by the model before its experimenta…
The pseudogap is a central puzzle of cuprate superconductors. Its connection to the Mott insulator at low doping $p$ remains ambiguous and its relation to the charge order that reconstructs the Fermi surface at intermediate $p$ is still unclear. Here we use measurements of the Hall coefficient in magnetic fields up to 88 T to show that Fermi-surface reconstruction by charge order in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ ends sharply at a critical doping $p = 0.16$, distinctly lower than the pseudogap critical point at $p^* = 0.19$. This shows that pseudogap and charge order are separate phenomena. We then find t…
Hole doped cuprates show a superconducting critical temperature $T_c$ which follows an universal dome-shaped behavior as function of doping. It is believed that the origin of superconductivity in cuprates is entangled with the physics of the pseudogap phase. An open discussion is whether the source of superconductivity is the same that causes the pseudogap properties. The $t$-$J$ model treated in large-N expansion shows $d$-wave superconductivity triggered by non-retarded interactions, and an instability of the paramagnetic state to a flux phase or $d$-wave charge density wave ($d$-CDW) state.…
Weakly correlated electrons on a square lattice are studied by angle-resolved functional renormalization group. Upon renormalization the interaction starts to depend on momenta and has pole-like solutions near a doping-dependent characteristic critical energy scale. Near half-filling this scale is the pseudogap temperature T*. In the overdoped regime the critical scale is the mean-field like critical temperature for d-wave superconductivity.
We examine the role of the anisotropy of superconducting critical thermal fluctuations in the opening of a pseudogap in a quasi-two dimensional superconductor such as a cuprate-oxide high-temperature superconductor. When the anisotropy between planes and their perpendicular axis is large enough and its superconducting critical temperature T_c is high enough, the fluctuations are much developed in its critical region so that lifetime widths of quasiparticles are large and the energy dependence of the selfenergy deviates from that of Landau's normal Fermi liquids. A pseudogap opens in such a cri…
Magnetic impurities coupled to both fermionic and bosonic baths or to a fermionic bath with pseudogap density of states, described by the Fermi-Bose Kondo and pseudogap Kondo models, display non-trivial intermediate coupling fixed points associated with critical local-moment fluctuations and local non-Fermi liquid behavior. Based on renormalization group together with a renormalized perturbation expansion around the free-impurity limit, we calculate various impurity properties in the vicinity of those intermediate-coupling fixed points. In particular, we compute the conduction electron T matri…
We consider a quantum-critical metal with interaction mediated by fluctuations of a critical order parameter. This interaction gives rise to two competing tendencies -- pairing and non-Fermi liquid behavior. Due to competition, the pairing develops below a finite $T_p $, however its prominent feedback on the fermionic self-energy develops only at a lower $ T_{cross}$. At $T<T_{cross}$ the system behavior is similar to that of a BCS supercoductor -- the density of states (DOS) and the spectral function (SF) have sharp gaps which close as $T$ increases. At higher $T_{cross}<T<T_{p}$ the DOS has …
Motivated by the rapid destruction of antiferromagnetic long-range order in hole-doped cuprate high-temperature superconductors, we study the effect of skyrmions on the magnetic long-range order (MLRO). Here we assume that either a skyrmion or antiskyrmion is introduced by a doped hole. Our numerical simulation indicates that in the case of isolated skyrmions, there is an abrupt disappearance of MLRO for doping concentration $x < 1.0\times 10^{-4}$. In the case of skyrmion-antiskyrmion pairs, the critical doping concentration $x_c$ for the suppression of MLRO is given as a function of the sepa…
The low-energy excitation spectrum of HTS cuprates is examined in the light of thermodynamic, transport, quasiparticle and spin properties. Changes in the thermodynamic spectrum associated with the normal-state pseudogap disappear abruptly at a critical doping state, $p_{crit}$ = 0.19 holes per Cu. Moreover, ARPES data at 100K show that heavily damped quasiparticles (QP) near ($π$,0) suddenly recover long lifetimes at $p_{crit}$, reflecting an abrupt loss of scattering from AF spin fluctuations. This picture is confirmed by $μ$SR zero-field relaxation measurements which indicate the presence o…
The pseudogap phase above the critical temperature of high $T_{c}$ superconductors (HTSC) presents different energy scales and it is currently a matter of intense study. The complexity of the HTSC normal state requires very accurate measurements with the purpose of distinguishing different types of phenomena. Here we have performed systematically studies through electrical resistivity ($ρ$) measurements by several different current densities in order to obtain an optimal current for each sample. This approach allows to determine reliable values of the pseudogap temperature $T^{*}(n)$, the laye…
The appearance of the Fermi arcs or gapless regions at the nodes of the Fermi surface just above the critical temperature is described through self-consistent calculations in an electronic disordered medium. We develop a model for cuprate superconductors based on an array of Josephson junctions formed by grains of inhomogeneous electronic density derived from a phase separation transition. This approach provides physical insights to the most important properties of these materials like the pseudogap phase as forming by the onset of local (intragrain) superconducting amplitudes and the zero res…
Temperature and doping dependent tunneling spectroscopy on $Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+δ}$ single crystals has been investigated by using break-junction technique. The results provide direct evidence that the pseudogap persists into heavily overdoped regime, possibly in whole doping range of the superconducting phase. The gap value determined from the peak-to-peak of the conductance, $Δ_{p-p}$, exhibits a jump-like increase as $T$ is raised across the critical temperature. The magnitude of the jump, the pseudogap opening temperature and superconducting gap decrease with raising doping. The $Δ_{p-p}$ b…
We present a general scenario for high-temperature superconducting cuprates, based on the presence of dynamical charge density waves (CDWs) and to the occurrence of a CDW quantum critical point, which occurs, e.g., at doping p~0.16 in YBCO. In this framework, even the pseudogap temperature T* is interpreted in terms of a reduction of the density of states due to incipient CDW and, at lower temperature to the possible formation of incoherent superconducting pairs. The dynamically fluctuating character of CDW accounts for the different temperatures at which the pseudogap (T*), the CDW onset reve…
The nature of the pseudogap phase remains a major barrier to our understanding of cuprate high-temperature superconductivity. Whether or not this metallic phase is defined by any of the reported broken symmetries, the topology of its Fermi surface remains a fundamental open question. Here we use angle-dependent magnetoresistance (ADMR) to measure the Fermi surface of the cuprate Nd-LSCO. Above the critical doping $p^*$ -- outside of the pseudogap phase -- we fit the ADMR data and extract a Fermi surface geometry that is in quantitative agreement with angle-resolved photoemission. Below $p^*$ -…
We report simultaneous hydrostatic pressure studies on the critical temperature $T_c$ and on the pseudogap temperature $T^*$ performed through resistivity measurements on an optimally doped high-$T_c$ oxide $Hg_{0.82}Re_{0.18}Ba_2Ca_2Cu_3O_{8+δ}$. The resistivity is measured as function of the temperature for several different applied pressure below 1GPa. We find that both $T_c$ and $T^*$ increases linearly with the pressure. This result demonstrate that the well known intrinsic pressure effect on $T_c$ is also present at $T^*$ and both temperatures are originated by the same superconducting m…
Evidence for intra-unit-cell (IUC) magnetic order in the pseudogap region of high-$T_c$ cuprates below a temperature $T^\ast$ is found in several studies, but NMR and $μ$SR experiments do not observe the expected static local magnetic fields. It has been noted, however, that such fields could be averaged by fluctuations. Our measurements of muon spin relaxation rates in single crystals of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ reveal magnetic fluctuations of the expected order of magnitude that exhibit critical slowing down at $T^\ast$. These results are strong evidence for fluctuating IUC magnetic order in the p…
The thermopower S of the high-Tc superconductor La(1.6-x)Nd(0.4)Sr(x)CuO(4) was measured as a function of temperature T near its pseudogap critical point, the critical hole doping p* where the pseudogap temperature T* goes to zero. Just above p*, S/T varies as ln(1/T) over a decade of temperature. Below p*, S/T undergoes a large increase below T*. As with the temperature dependence of the resistivity, which is linear just above p* and undergoes a large upturn below T*, these are typical signatures of a quantum phase transition. This suggests that p* is a quantum critical point below which some…
We apply the recent wavepacket formalism developed by Ossadnik to describe the origin of the short range ordered pseudogap state as the hole doping is lowered through a critical density in cuprates. We argue that the energy gain that drives this precursor state to Mott localization, follows from maximizing umklapp scattering near the Fermi energy. To this end we show how energy gaps driven by umklapp scattering can open on an appropriately chosen surface, as proposed earlier by Yang, Rice and Zhang. The key feature is that the pairing instability includes umklapp scattering, leading to an ener…
The thermal conductivity $κ$ of the cuprate superconductor La$_{1.6-x}$Nd$_{0.4}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ was measured down to 50 mK in seven crystals with doping from $p=0.12$ to $p=0.24$, both in the superconducting state and in the magnetic field-induced normal state. We obtain the electronic residual linear term $κ_0/T$ as $T \to 0$ across the pseudogap critical point $p^{\star}= 0.23$. In the normal state, we observe an abrupt drop in $κ_0/T$ upon crossing below $p^{\star}$, consistent with a drop in carrier density $n$ from $1 + p$ to $p$, the signature of the pseudogap phase inferred from the Hall…
The mysterious pseudogap phase of cuprate superconductors ends at a critical hole doping level p* but the nature of the ground state below p* is still debated. Here, we show that the genuine nature of the magnetic ground state in La2-xSrxCuO4 is hidden by competing effects from superconductivity: applying intense magnetic fields to quench superconductivity, we uncover the presence of glassy antiferromagnetic order up to the pseudogap boundary p* ~ 0.19, and not above. There is thus a quantum phase transition at p*, which is likely to underlie highfield observations of a fundamental change in e…
To understand the interplay of d-wave superconductivity and antiferromagnetism in the cuprates, we consider a two-dimensional extended Hubbard model with nearest neighbor attractive interaction. Free energy of the homogeneous (coexisting superconducting and antiferromagnetic) state calculated a s a function of the band filling shows a region of of phase separation. The phase separation caused by the intersite attractive force leads to novel insights into salient features of the pseudogap phase diagram. In particular, the upper crossover curve can be identified with the phase separation boundar…
Within the stripe quantum critical point theory for high T_c superconductors, we point out that there is a direct contribution of charge collective fluctuations to the optical absorption and to the Raman spectra. In this latter case, we find that the critical charge collective modes can or can not be excited depending on the direction of their wavevector and on the polarization of the incoming and outgoing photons. This indicates a marked distinction between quasiparticles which are strongly and weakly coupled to critical collective modes and provides a direct confirmation that the order assoc…
Within the Hubbard-Holstein model with long-range Coulomb forces, we revisit the charge-ordering scenario for the superconducting cuprates and account for the presence or the absence of a formed stripe phase in different classes of cuprates. We also evaluate the mean-field and the fluctuation-corrected critical lines for charge ordering and we relate them with the various pseudogap crossover lines occurring in the cuprates and we discuss a mechanism for their peculiar isotopic dependence. Considering the dynamical nature of the charge-ordering transition, we explain the spread of T* and of its…
A fundamental question of high-temperature superconductors is the nature of the pseudogap phase which lies between the Mott insulator at zero doping and the Fermi liquid at high doping p. Here we report on the behaviour of charge carriers near the zero-temperature onset of that phase, namely at the critical doping p* where the pseudogap temperature T* goes to zero, accessed by investigating a material in which superconductivity can be fully suppressed by a steady magnetic field. Just below p*, the normal-state resistivity and Hall coefficient of La1.6-xNd0.4SrxCuO4 are found to rise simultaneo…
Recently, charge density fluctuations or charge fluxes attract strong interests in understanding the unconventional superconductivity. In this paper, a new emergent configuration in cuprates is identified by density functional theory simulations, called the charge pseudoplane, which exhibits the property of confining the dynamic charge fluxes for higher superconducting transition temperatures. It further redefines the fundamental collective excitation in cuprates as pQon with the momentum-dependent and ultrafast localization-delocalization duality. It is shown that both pseudogap and supercond…
Particle-hole symmetry in the pseudogap phase of moderately underdoped cuprate high temperature superconductors evidenced from joint density of states analysis
In two dimensions there is a direct superconductor-to-insulator quantum phase transition driven by increasing disorder. We elucidate, using a combination of inhomogeneous mean field theory and quantum Monte Carlo techniques, the nature of the phases and the mechanism of the transition. We make several testable predictions specifically for local spectroscopic probes. With increasing disorder, the system forms superconducting blobs on the scale of the coherence length embedded in an insulating matrix. In the superconducting state, the phases on the different blobs are coherent across the system …
We discuss a multichannel SU(N) Kondo model which displays non-trivial zero-temperature phase transitions due to a conduction electron density of states vanishing with a power law at the Fermi level. In a particular large-N limit, the system is described by coupled integral equations corresponding to a dynamic saddle point. We exactly determine the universal low-energy behavior of spectral densities at the scale-invariant fixed points, obtain anomalous exponents, and compute scaling functions describing the crossover near the quantum-critical points. We argue that our findings are relevant to …
The electrical resistivity $ρ$ and Hall coefficient R$_H$ of the tetragonal single-layer cuprate Nd-LSCO were measured in magnetic fields up to $H = 37.5$ T, large enough to access the normal state at $T \to 0$, for closely spaced dopings $p$ across the pseudogap critical point at $p^\star = 0.235$. Below $p^\star$, both coefficients exhibit an upturn at low temperature, which gets more pronounced with decreasing $p$. Taken together, these upturns show that the normal-state carrier density $n$ at $T = 0$ drops upon entering the pseudogap phase. Quantitatively, it goes from $n = 1 + p$ at $p = …
We describe the spectral properties of underdoped cuprates as resulting from a momentum-dependent pseudogap in the normal state spectrum. Such a model accounts, within a BCS approach, for the doping dependence of the critical temperature and for the two-parameter leading-edge shift observed in the cuprates. By introducing a phenomenological temperature dependence of the pseudogap, which finds a natural interpretation within the stripe quantum-critical-point scenario for high-T_c superconductors, we reproduce also the T_c-T^* bifurcation near optimum doping. Finally, we briefly discuss the diff…
Superconductivity is a quantum phenomenon caused by bound pairs of electrons. In diverse families of strongly correlated electron systems, the electron pairs are not bound together by phonon exchange but instead by some other kind of bosonic fluctuations. In these systems, superconductivity is often found near a magnetic quantum critical point (QCP) where a magnetic phase vanishes in the zero-temperature limit. Moreover, the maximum of superconducting transition temperature Tc frequently locates near the magnetic QCP, suggesting that the proliferation of critical spin fluctuations emanating fr…
Close to optimal doping, the copper oxide superconductors show 'strange metal' behavior, suggestive of strong fluctuations associated with a quantum critical point. Such a critical point requires a line of classical phase transitions terminating at zero temperature near optimal doping inside the superconducting 'dome'. The underdoped region of the temperature-doping phase diagram from which superconductivity emerges is referred to as the 'pseudogap' because evidence exists for partial gapping of the conduction electrons, but so far there is no compelling thermodynamic evidence as to whether th…
Using the dynamical cluster approximation, we calculate the correlation functions associated with the nearest neighbor bond operator which measure the z component of the spin exchange in the two-dimensional Hubbard model with $U$ equal to the bandwidth. We find that in the pseudogap region, the local bond susceptibility diverges at T=0. This shows the existence of degenerate bond spin excitation and implies quantum criticality and bond order formation when long range correlations are considered. The strong correlation between excitations on parallel neighboring bonds suggests bond singlet dime…
The origin of the pseudogap behavior, found in many high-$T_c$ superconductors, remains one of the greatest puzzles in condensed matter physics. One possible mechanism is fermionic incoherence, which near a quantum critical point allows pair formation but suppresses superconductivity. Employing quantum Monte Carlo simulations of a model of itinerant fermions coupled to ferromagnetic spin fluctuations, represented by a quantum rotor, we report numerical evidence of pseudogap behavior, emerging from pairing fluctuations in a quantum-critical non-Fermi liquid. Specifically, we observe enhanced pa…
One of the most widely discussed features of the cuprate high Tc superconductors is the presence of a pseudogap in the normal state. Recent transport and specific heat measurements have revealed an abrupt transition at the pseudogap critical point, denoted p*, characterized by a drop in carrier density and a strong mass enhancement. In order to give more details about this transition at p*, we performed low-temperature infrared spectroscopy in the normal state of cuprate superconductors La2-xSrxCuO4 (LSCO) and La1.8-xEu0.2SrxCuO4 (Eu-LSCO) for doping contents across the pseudogap critical poin…
We apply strong magnetic fields of H=28.5 \sim 43 T to suppress superconductivity (SC) in the cuprates Bi_{2}Sr_{2-x}La_xCuO_{6+δ} (x=0.65, 0.40, 0.25, 0.15 and 0), and investigate the low temperature (T) normal state by ^{63}Cu nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate (1/T_1) measurements. We find that the pseudogap (PG) phase persists deep inside the overdoped region but terminates at x \sim 0.05 that corresponds to the hole doping concentration of approximately 0.21. Beyond this critical point, the normal state is a Fermi liquid characterized by the T_1T=const relation. A comparison of the supe…
Spin fluctuations (SF) and SF-mediated superconductivity (SC) in quasi-two-dimensional metals around the antiferrromagnetic (AF) quantum critical point (QCP) are investigated by using the self-consistent renormalization theory for SF and the strong coupling theory for SC. We introduce a parameter y0 as a measure for the distance from the AFQCP which is approximately proportional to (x-xc), x being the electron (e) or hole (h) doping concentration to the half-filled band and xc being the value at the AFQCP. We present phase diagrams in the T-y0 plane including contour maps of the AF correlation…
A method is proposed to test for the nature of the pseudogap phase in cuprates using the recently developed technique of Fourier transform scanning tunneling spectroscopy. We show that the observed quasiparticle interference patterns depend critically on the quasiparticle coherence factors, making it possible to distinguish between the pseudogap dominated by superconducting fluctuations and by various particle-hole condensates.
