We are designing an all-scintillator Compton gamma imager for use in security investigations and remediation actions involving radioactive threat material. To satisfy requirements for a rugged and portable instrument, we have chosen solid scintillator for the active volumes of both the scatter and absorber detectors. Using the BEAMnrc/EGSnrc Monte Carlo simulation package, we have constructed models using four different materials for the scatter detector: LaBr_3, NaI, CaF_2 and PVT. We have compared the detector performances using angular resolution, efficiency, and image resolution. We find that while PVT provides worse performance than that of the detectors based entirely on inorganic scintillators, all of the materials investigated for the scatter detector have the potential to provide performance adequate for our purposes.
CeBr3 is emerging as one of the best scintillators having properties almost similar to Cerium doped lanthanum halide scintillators. We have measured, for the first time, the intrinsic energy resolution of Compton electrons in a cylindrical 1"x1" CeBr3 detector using the sources, namely, 137Cs, 22Na and 60Co employing Compton Coincidence Technique (CCT). We have used PIXIE-4 data acquisition system which makes the measurement setup quite compact. The results have shown that non-proportionality is the major factor in limiting the overall energy resolution of CeBr3 and the intrinsic resolution in…
We have developed a compact Compton gamma-ray imager with a large field of view and a low channel-count that is capable of quickly localizing gamma-ray sources in the few hundred keV - several MeV range. The two detector planes (scatter and absorber) employ bars of NaI(Tl) read out by photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) located at each end. The long-range imaging performance has been tested from 392 keV to 1274 keV. An angular resolution measure of 2.72 +/- 0.06 degrees and an efficiency of (1.79 +/- 0.04) x 10^(-3) at 662 keV is obtained. A Cs-137 (662 keV) source equivalent to a 10 mCi source 40 m …
We present the results of the first high-altitude balloon flight test of a concept for an advanced Compton telescope making use of modern scintillator materials with silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) readouts. There is a need in the fields of high-energy astronomy and solar physics for new medium-energy gamma-ray (~0.4 - 10 MeV) detectors capable of making sensitive observations. A fast scintillator- based Compton telescope with SiPM readouts is a promising solution to this instrumentation challenge, since the fast response of the scintillators permits the rejection of background via time-of-flig…
In recent years, a number of purpose-built scintillator-based polarimeters have studied bright astronomical sources for the first time in the hard X-ray band (tens to hundreds of keV). The addition of polarimetry can help data interpretation by resolving model-dependent degeneracies. The typical instrument approach is that incident X-rays scatter off a plastic scintillator into an adjacent scintillator cell. In all missions to date, the scintillators are read out using traditional vacuum tube photo-multipliers (PMTs). The advent of solid-state PMTs ("silicon PM" or "MPPC") is attractive for sp…
J-PET is the first positron-emission tomograph (PET) constructed from plastic scintillators. It was optimized for the detection of photons from electron-positron annihilation. Such photons, having an energy of 511 keV, interact with electrons in plastic scintillators predominantly via the Compton effect. Compton scattering is at most probable at an angle orthogonal to the electric field vector of the interacting photon. Thus registration of multiple photon scatterings with J-PET enables to determine the polarization of the annihilation photons. In this contribution we present estimates on the …
We are developing a rugged and person-transportable Compton gamma imager for use in security investigations of radioactive materials, and for radiological incident remediation. The imager is composed of layers of scintillator with light collection for the forward layers provided by silicon photomultipliers and for the rear layer by photomultiplier tubes. As a first step, we have developed a 1/5th-scale demonstration unit of the final imager. We present the imaging performance of this demonstration unit for Cs-137 at angles of up to 30 degrees off-axis. Results are also presented for Sn-113 and…
A light-yield calibration of an NE 213A organic liquid scintillator detector has been performed using both monoenergetic and polyenergetic gamma-ray sources. Scintillation light was detected in a photomultiplier tube, and the corresponding pulses were subjected to waveform digitization on an event-by-event basis. The resulting Compton edges have been analyzed using a Geant4 simulation of the detector which models both the interactions of the ionizing radiation as well as the transport of scintillation photons. The simulation is calibrated and also compared to well-established prescriptions use…
Linear alkylbenzene (LAB) based liquid scintillator is adopted as the central detector for the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) liquid scintillator detectors. A quenching factor measurement instrument is designed based on the Compton scattering process. Two different quenchers for the liquid scintillator have been investigated and the result shows that the scintillation light of the JUNO liquid scintillator can be quenched to a level. The emission spectrum with the absence of the quencher is also showing a desired behavior.

i-TED consists of both a total energy detector and a Compton camera primarily intended for the measurement of neutron capture cross sections by means of the simultaneous combination of neutron time-of-flight (TOF) and $γ$-ray imaging techniques. TOF allows one to obtain a neutron-energy differential capture yield, whereas the imaging capability is intended for the discrimination of radiative background sources, that have a spatial origin different from that of the capture sample under investigation. A distinctive feature of i-TED is the embedded Dynamic Electronic Collimation (DEC) concept, wh…
PETALO (Positron Emission TOF Apparatus based on Liquid xenOn) exploits the unique characteristics of liquid xenon as a scintillator for use in a PET detector. Here initial simulation studies are detailed which highlight the potential of such a detector and outline the steps taken in the reconstruction of 511 keV gamma rays and in the full PET image reconstruction. In particular, a neural network-based approach is conceived in order to tag gamma rays that are poorly reconstructed due to Compton scattering. It is found that though a significant fraction of events undergo Compton scattering, not…
The Compton Spectrometer and Imager (COSI) is a balloon-borne soft $γ$-ray telescope (0.2-5 MeV) designed to study astrophysical sources. COSI employs a compact Compton telescope design and is comprised of twelve high-purity germanium semiconductor detectors. Tracking the locations and energies of $γ$-ray scatters within the detectors permits high-resolution spectroscopy, direct imaging over a wide field-of-view, polarization studies, and effective suppression of background events. Critical to the precise determination of each interaction's energy, position, and the subsequent event reconstruc…
A Compton gamma imager has been developed for use in consequence management operations and in security investigations. The imager uses solid inorganic scintillator, known for robust performance in field survey conditions. The design was constrained in overall size by the requirement that it be person transportable and operable from a variety of platforms. In order to introduce minimal dead material in the path of the incoming and scattered gamma rays, custom silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs), with a thin glass substrate, were used to collect the scintillation light from the scatter layers. To m…
The SiPM-based Compton Telescope for Safety and Security (SCoTSS) has been developed with inorganic crystalline scintillator material for gamma detection. The instrument is sensitive enough to be used in a mobile survey mode, accumulating energy deposited in any crystal second-by-second and tagging these spectra with GPS position. The SCoTSS imager of course has the additional advantage of being able to produce an image of the radioactive objects in its field of view using events that satisfy a coincidence trigger between the scatter and absorber layers. The Advanced Radiation Detector for UAV…
The Silicon photomultiplier-based Compton Telescope for Safety and Security (SCoTSS) has been developed incorporating end-user requirements into the design process. The end-user group includes those responsible for mobile survey in the event of a radiological or nuclear accident, those responsible for radiation survey support to security operations at major events and at Canadian borders, as well as some of those responsible for Canadian defense applications. The SCoTSS development program has reached a technology readiness level of eight, and we are proceeding with field trials of the instrum…
We have modeled, tested, and installed a large, cerium-activated Gd2SiO5 crystal scintillator for use as a detector of gamma rays. We present the measured detector response to two types of incident photons: nearly monochromatic photons up to 40 MeV, and photons from a continuous Compton backscattering spectrum up to 200 MeV. Our GEANT4 simulations, developed to determine the analyzing power of the Compton polarimeter in Hall A of Jefferson Lab, reproduce the measured spectra well.
We present a study of the application of the Jagiellonian Positron Emission Tomograph (J-PET) for the registration of gamma quanta from decays of ortho-positronium (o-Ps). The J-PET is the first positron emission tomography scanner based on organic scintillators in contrast to all current PET scanners based on inorganic crystals. Monte Carlo simulations show that the J-PET as an axially symmetric and high acceptance scanner can be used as a multi-purpose detector well suited to pursue research including e.g. tests of discrete symmetries in decays of ortho-positronium in addition to the medical…
We proposed a novel method for exploring the intrinsic energy resolution of a liquid scintillator (LAB + 2.5 g/L PPO + 3 mg/L bis-MSB) for approximately 1 MeV electrons. With the help of coincidence detection technology, single-energy electrons of Bi 207 were effectively selected. With careful measurement and analysis of the energy resolution of a small liquid scintillator detector, the intrinsic energy resolution to 976 keV electrons was extracted to be 1.83%. We used the wide-angle Compton coincidence (WACC) method to measure the luminescent nonlinearity of the liquid scintillator and found …

Time of Flight Positron Emission Tomography scanner based on plastic scintillators is being developed at the Jagiellonian University by the J-PET collaboration. The main challenge of the conducted research lies in the elaboration of a method allowing application of plastic scintillators for the detection of low energy gamma quanta. In this article we report on tests of a single detection module built out from BC-420 plastic scintillator strip (with dimensions of 5x19x300mm^3) read out at two ends by Hamamatsu R5320 photomultipliers. The measurements were performed using collimated beam of anni…
In order to cope with increasing lifetime radiation damage expected at collider experiments, silicon sensors are becoming increasingly thin. To achieve adequate detection efficiency, the next generation of detectors may have to operate with thresholds below 1000 electron-hole pairs. The readout chips attached to these sensors should be calibrated to some known external charge, but there is a lack of traditional sources in this charge regime. We present a new method for absolute charge calibration based on Compton scattering. In the past, this method has been used for calibration of scintillato…
The response of the liquid scintillator (EJ-301 equivalent to NE-213) to the monoenergetic electrons produced in Compton scattered $γ$-ray tagging has been carried out for various radioactive $γ$-ray sources. The measured electron response is found to be linear up to $\sim$4~MeVee and the resolution of the liquid scintillator at 1~MeVee is observed to be $\sim$~11\%. The pulse shape discrimination and pulse height response of the liquid scintillator for neutrons has been measured using $^7$Li(p,n$_1$)$^7$Be*(0.429 MeV) reaction. Non linear response to mono-energetic neutrons for the liquid sci…

We report on an hybrid in-beam PET and prompt-gamma Compton imaging system aimed at quasi real-time ion-range verification in proton-therapy treatments. Proof-of-concept experiments were carried out at the radiobiology beam line of the CNA cyclotron facility using a set of two synchronous Compton imagers and different target materials. The time structure of the 18~MeV proton beam was shaped with a series of beam-on and beam-off intervals, thereby mimicking a pulsed proton beam on a long time scale. During beam-on intervals, Compton imaging was performed utilizing the high energy $γ$-rays promp…
In this paper we present a method of scintillation detector energy calibration using the gamma-rays. The technique is based on the Compton scattering of gamma-rays in a scintillation detector and subsequent photoelectric absorption of the scattered photon in the Ge-detector. The novelty of this method is that the source of gamma rays, the germanium and scintillation detectors are immediately arranged adjacent to each other. The method presents an effective solution for the detectors consisting of a low atomic number materials, when the ratio between Compton effect and photoelectric absorption …
Gamma-ray emission from special nuclear material (SNM) is relatively easy to shield from detection using modest amounts of high-Z material. In contrast, fast-neutrons are much more penetrating and can escape relatively thick high-Z shielding without losing significant energy. Furthermore, fast neutrons provide a clear and unambiguous signature of the presence of SNM with few competing natural background sources. The challenge of detecting fast neutrons is twofold. First, the neutron flux from SNM are only a fraction of the corresponding gamma-ray flux. Second, fast neutrons can be difficult to…
Detection of $γ$-ray polarization in Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is as yet an unexploited feature that could be used as an additional handle to improve signal-to-background ratio in this imaging modality. The $γ$ polarization is related to the azimuthal angle in the Compton scattering process, so the initial correlation of polarizations of the annihilation quanta translates to the correlation of the azimuthal angles in events where both annihilation photons undergo Compton scattering. This results in a modulated distribution of the azimuthal angle difference for true events, while this …
Localisation of gamma-ray interaction points in monolithic scintillator crystals can simplify the design and improve the performance of a future Compton telescope for gamma-ray astronomy. In this paper we compare the position resolution of three monolithic scintillators: a 28x28x20 mm3 (length x breadth x thickness) LaBr3:Ce crystal, a 25x25x20 mm3 CeBr3 crystal and a 25x25x10 mm3 CeBr3 crystal. Each crystal was encapsulated and coupled to an array of 4x4 silicon photomultipliers through an optical window. The measurements were conducted using 81 keV and 356 keV gamma-rays from a collimated 13…
High-purity germanium detectors are well suited to analysis the radioactivity of samples. In order to reduce the environmental background, low-activity lead and oxygen free copper are installed outside of the probe to shield gammas, outmost is a plastic scintillator to veto the cosmic rays, and an anti-Compton detector can improve the Peak-to-Compton ratio. Using the GEANT4 tools and taking into account a detailed description of the detector, we optimize the sizes of the detectors to reach the design indexes. A group of experimental data from a HPGe spectrometer in using were used to compare w…

We describe a very compact (0.9 m high, 0.4 m diameter, 40 kg) battery operable neutron scatter camera designed for field deployment. Unlike most other systems, the configuration of the sixteen liquid-scintillator detection cells are arranged to provide omnidirectional (4π) imaging with sensitivity comparable to a conventional two-plane system. Although designed primarily to operate as a neutron scatter camera for localizing energetic neutron sources, it also functions as a Compton camera for localizing gamma sources. In addition to describing the radionuclide source localization capabilities …
POLAR is space-borne detector designed for a precise measurement of gamma-ray polarization of the prompt emissions of Gamma-Ray Bursts in the energy range 50 keV - 500 keV. POLAR is a compact Compton polarimeter consisting of 40$\times$ 40 plastic scintillator bars read out by 25 multi-anode PMTs. In May 2015, we performed a series of tests of the POLAR flight model with 100\% polarized x-rays beams at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility beam-line ID11 aming to study thresholds, crosstalk between channels and responses of POLAR flight model to polarized X-ray beams. In this paper we pr…
The precise measurements of the Compton scatterings of photons originating from the decay of positronium atoms can reveal information about their polarizations. J-PET detector is constructed of 192 plastic scintillators and is unique to study the scattering correlations of the annihilation photons with an angular precision of several degrees. In this work, we present the first experimental evidence showing the feasibility of measuring the photons relative polarization using the J-PET detector.
J-PET is a detector optimized for registration of photons from the electron-positron annihilation via plastic scintillators where photons interact predominantly via Compton scattering. Registration of both primary and scattered photons enables to determinate the linear polarization of the primary photon on the event by event basis with a certain probability. Here we present quantitative results on the feasibility of such polarization measurements of photons from the decay of positronium with the J-PET and explore the physical limitations for the resolution of the polarization determination of …
This article describes simulations of scattering of annihilation gamma quanta in a strip of plastic scintillator. Such strips constitute basic detection modules in a newly proposed Positron Emission Tomography which utilizes plastic scintillators instead of inorganic crystals. An algorithm simulating chain of Compton scatterings was elaborated and series of simulations have been conducted for the scintillator strip with the cross section of 5 mm x 19 mm. Obtained results indicate that secondary interactions occur only in the case of about 8% of events and out of them only 25$\%$ take place in …

We have developed an electron-tracking Compton camera (ETCC) for use in next-generation MeV gamma ray telescopes. An ETCC consists of a gaseous time projection chamber (TPC) and pixel scintillator arrays (PSAs). Since the TPC measures the three dimensional tracks of Compton-recoil electrons, the ETCC can completely reconstruct the incident gamma rays. Moreover, the ETCC demonstrates efficient background rejection power in Compton-kinematics tests, identifies particle from the energy deposit rate (dE/dX) registered in the TPC, and provides high quality imaging by completely reconstructing the C…
In spite of extensive observations and numerous theoretical studies in the past decades several key questions related with Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRB) emission mechanisms are still to be answered. Precise detection of the GRB polarization carried out by dedicated instruments can provide new data and be an ultimate tool to unveil their real nature. A novel space-borne Compton polarimeter POLAR onboard the Chinese space station TG2 is designed to measure linear polarization of gamma-rays arriving from GRB prompt emissions. POLAR uses plastics scintillator bars (PS) as gamma-ray detectors and multi-an…

Nowadays, the current threat of international terrorism is set to a severe level, demanding worldwide enhanced security. Radioactive materials that could be fashioned into a radiation dispersal device typically emit gamma rays, while fissile materials such as uranium and plutonium emit both neutrons and gamma rays via spontaneous or induced fission. Therefore, the detection and identification of hazardous materials has become increasingly important. We present the results of GEANT4 Monte Carlo simulation of an active neutron interrogation system based on highly segmented neutron/gamma-ray dete…
