Let $P$ be a polynomial with a connected Julia set $J$. We use continuum theory to show that it admits a \emph{finest monotone map $\ph$ onto a locally connected continuum $J_{\sim_P}$}, i.e. a monotone map $\ph:J\to J_{\sim_P}$ such that for any other monotone map $ψ:J\to J'$ there exists a monotone map $h$ with $ψ=h\circ \ph$. Then we extend $\ph$ onto the complex plane $\C$ (keeping the same notation) and show that $\ph$ monotonically semiconjugates $P|_{\C}$ to a \emph{topological polynomial $g:\C\to \C$}. If $P$ does not have Siegel or Cremer periodic points this gives an alternative proof of Kiwi's fundamental results on locally connected models of dynamics on the Julia sets, but the results hold for all polynomials with connected Julia sets. We also give a criterion and a useful sufficient condition for the map $\ph$ not to collapse $J$ into a point.
We give an alternative way to construct an entire function with quasiconformal surgery so that all its Fatou components are quasi-circles but the Julia set is non-locally connected.
Let $f:z\mapsto z^2+c$ be a quadratic polynomial whose Julia set $J$ is locally-connected of the set of biaccessible points in $J$ is zero except when $f(z)=z^2-2$ is the Chebyshev quadratic polynomial for which the corresponding measure is one.
Suppose that a $X$ is an \emph{unshielded} plane continuum (i.e., $X$ coincides with the boundary of the unbounded complementary component of $X$). Then there exists a \emph{finest monotone} map $m:X\to L$, where $L$ is a locally connected continuum (i.e., $m^{-1}(y)$ is connected for each $y\in L$, and any monotone map $φ:X\to L'$ onto a locally connected continuum is a composition $φ=φ'\circ m$ where $φ':L\to L'$ is monotone). Such finest locally connected model $L$ of $X$ is easier to understand because $L$ is locally connected (in particular it can be described by a picture) and represents…
One of the main questions in the field of complex dynamics is the question whether the Mandelbrot set is locally connected, and related to this, for which maps the Julia set is locally connected. In this paper we shall prove the following Main Theorem: Let $f$ be a polynomial of the form $f(z)=z^d +c$ with $d$ an even integer and $c$ real. Then the Julia set of $f$ is either totally disconnected or locally connected. In particular, the Julia set of $z^2+c$ is locally connected if $c \in [-2,1/4]$ and totally disconnected otherwise.
We show that, if the Julia set of a transcendental entire function is locally connected, then it takes the form of a spider's web in the sense defined by Rippon and Stallard. In the opposite direction, we prove that a spider's web Julia set is always locally connected at a dense subset of buried points. We also show that the set of buried points (the residual Julia set) can be a spider's web.
In this article we address the following question, whose interest was recently renewed by problems arising in arithmetic dynamics: under which conditions does there exist a local biholomorphism between the Julia sets of two given one-dimensional rational maps? In particular we find criteria ensuring that such a local isomorphism is induced by an algebraic correspondence. This extends and unifies classical results due to Baker, Beardon, Eremenko, Levin, Przytycki and others. The proof involves entire curves and positive currents.
According to the Thurston No Wandering Triangle Theorem, a branching point in a locally connected quadratic Julia set is either preperiodic or precritical. Blokh and Oversteegen proved that this theorem does not hold for higher degree Julia sets: there exist cubic polynomials whose Julia set is a locally connected dendrite with a branching point which is neither preperiodic nor precritical. In this article, we reprove this result, constructing such cubic polynomials as limits of cubic polynomials for which one critical point eventually maps to the other critical point which eventually maps to …
In general, little is known about the exact topological structure of Julia sets containing a Cremer point. In this paper we show that there exist quadratic Cremer Julia sets of positive area such that for a full Lebesgue measure set of angles the impressions are degenerate, the Julia set is connected im kleinen at the landing points of these rays, and these points are contained in no other impression.
We prove that for every polynomial of one complex variable of degree at least 2 and Julia set not being totally disconnected nor a circle, nor interval, Hausdorff dimension of this Julia set is larger than 1. Till now this was known only in the connected Julia set case. We give also an example of a polynomial with non-connected but not totally disconnected Julia set and such that all its components comprising of more than single points are analytic arcs, thus resolving a question by Christopher Bishop, who asked whether every such component must have Hausdorff dimension larger than 1.
We investigate the dynamics of semigroups generated by a family of polynomial maps on the Riemann sphere such that the postcritical set in the complex plane is bounded. The Julia set of such a semigroup may not be connected in general. We show that for such a polynomial semigroup, if $A$ and $B$ are two connected components of the Julia set, then one of $A$ and $B$ surrounds the other. From this, it is shown that each connected component of the Fatou set is either simply or doubly connected. Moreover, we show that the Julia set of such a semigroup is uniformly perfect. An upper estimate of the…
We construct the first examples of rational functions defined over a non-archimedean field with certain dynamical properties. In particular, we find such functions whose Julia sets, in the Berkovich projective line, are connected but not contained in a line segment. We also show how to compute the measure-theoretic and topological entropy of such maps. In particular, we show for some of our examples that the measure-theoretic entropy is strictly smaller than the topological entropy, thus answering a question of Favre and Rivera-Letelier.
We show that Fatou components of a semi-hyperbolic rational map are John domains and that the converse does not hold. This generalizes a famous result of Carleson, Jones and Yoccoz. We show that a connected Julia set is locally connected for a large class of non-uniformly hyperbolic rational maps. This class is more general than semi-hyperbolicity and includes Collet-Eckmann and Topological Collet-Eckmann maps and maps verifying a summability condition (as considered by Graczyk and Smirnov).
We explore the connected/disconnected dichotomy for the Julia set of polynomial automorphisms of C^2. We develop several aspects of the question, which was first studied by Bedford-Smillie. We introduce a new sufficient condition for the connectivity of the Julia set, that carries over for certain H{é}non-like and birational maps. We study the structure of disconnected Julia sets and the associated invariant currents. This provides a simple approach to some results of Bedford-Smillie, as well as some new corollaries --the connectedness locus is closed, construction of external rays in the gene…
Using computer graphics and visualization algorithms, we extend in this work the results obtained analytically in [1], on the connectivity domains of alternated Julia sets, defined by switching the dynamics of two quadratic Julia sets. As proved in [1], the alternated Julia sets exhibit, as for polynomials of degree greater than two, the disconnectivity property in addition to the known dichotomy property (connectedness and totally disconnectedness) which characterizes the standard Julia sets. Via computer graphics, we unveil these connectivity domains which are four-dimensional fractals. The …
For an infinitely renormalizable quadratic map $f_c: z\mapsto z^2+c$ with the sequence of renormalization periods ${k_m}$ and rotation numbers ${t_m=p_m/q_m}, we prove that if $\limsup k_m^{-1}\log |p_m|>0$, then the Mandelbrot set is locally connected at $c$. We prove also that if $\limsup |t_{m+1}|^{1/q_m}<1$ and $q_m\to \infty$, then the Julia set of $f_c$ is not locally connected and the Mandelbrot set is locally connected at $c$ provided that all the renormalizations are non-primitive (satellite). This quantifies a construction of A. Douady and J. Hubbard, and weakens a condition proposed…
For any integers $d\ge 3$ and $n\ge 1$, we construct a hyperbolic rational map of degree $d$ such that it has $n$ cycles of the connected components of its Julia set except single points and Jordan curves.
We prove that every transcendental meromorphic map f with a disconnected Julia set has a weakly repelling fixed point. This implies that the Julia set of Newton's method for finding zeroes of an entire map is connected. Moreover, extending a result of Cowen for holomorphic self-maps of the disc, we show the existence of absorbing domains for holomorphic self-maps of hyperbolic regions whose iterates tend to a boundary point. In particular, the results imply that periodic Baker domains of Newton's method for entire maps are simply connected, which solves a well-known open question.
We show that if $β>1$ is a rational number and the Julia set $J$ of the holomorphic correspondence $z^β+c$ is a locally eventually onto hyperbolic repeller, then the Hausdorff dimension of $J$ is bounded from above by the zero of the associated pressure function. As a consequence, we conclude that the Julia set of the correspondence has zero Lebesgue measure for parameters close to zero, whenever $q^2<p$ and $β=p/q$ in lowest terms.
We show that if $P$ is a quadratic polynomial with a fixed Cremer point and Julia set $J$, then for any monotone map $\ph:J\to A$ from $J$ onto a locally connected continuum $A$, $A$ is a single point.
We investigate the set of biaccessible points for connected polynomial Julia sets of arbitrary degrees $d\geq 2$. We prove that the Hausdorff dimension of the set of external angles corresponding to biaccessible points is less than 1, unless the Julia set is an interval. This strengthens theorems of Stanislav Smirnov and Anna Zdunik: they proved that the same set of external angles has zero 1-dimensional measure.
A tree, embedded into plane, is a dessin d'enfant and its Belyi function is a polynomial --- Shabat polynomial. The Zapponi form of this polynomial is unique, so we can correspond to an embedded tree the Julia set of its Shabat-Zapponi polynomial. In this purely experimental work we study relations between the form of a tree and properties (form, connectedness, Hausdorff dimension) of its Julia set.
Given a polynomial $p$, the degree of its Chebyshev's method $C_p$ is determined. If $p$ is cubic then the degree of $C_p$ is found to be $4,6$ or $7$ and we investigate the dynamics of $C_p$ in these cases. If a cubic polynomial $p$ is unicritical or non-generic then, it is proved that the Julia set of $C_p$ is connected. The family of all rational maps arising as the Chebyshev's method applied to a cubic polynomial which is non-unicritical and generic is parametrized by the multiplier of one of its extraneous fixed points. Denoting a member of this family with an extraneous fixed point with …
We prove that the Julia set $J(f)$ of at most finitely renormalizable unicritical polynomial $f:z\mapsto z^d+c$ with all periodic points repelling is locally connected. (For $d=2$ it was proved by Yoccoz around 1990.) It follows from a priori bounds in a modified Principle Nest of puzzle pieces. The proof of a priori bounds makes use of new analytic tools developed in math.DS/0505191 that give control of moduli of annuli under maps of high degree.
We discuss the dynamic and structural properties of polynomial semigroups, a natural extension of iteration theory to random (walk) dynamics, where the semigroup $G$ of complex polynomials (under the operation of composition of functions) is such that there exists a bounded set in the plane which contains any finite critical value of any map $g \in G$. In general, the Julia set of such a semigroup $G$ may be disconnected, and each Fatou component of such $G$ is either simply connected or doubly connected (\cite{Su01,Su9}). In this paper, we show that for any two distinct Fatou components of ce…
Let $f$ be a rational map with degree $d\geq 2$ whose Julia set is connected but not equal to the whole Riemann sphere. It is proved that there exists a rational map $g$ such that $g$ contains a buried Julia component on which the dynamics is quasiconformally conjugate to that of $f$ on the Julia set if and only if $f$ does not have parabolic basins and Siegel disks. If such $g$ exists, then the degree can be chosen such that $\text{deg}(g)\leq 7d-2$. In particular, if $f$ is a polynomial, then $g$ can be chosen such that $\text{deg}(g)\leq 4d+4$. Moreover, some quartic and cubic rational maps…
Let $P$ be a polynomial of degree $d$ with a Cremer point $p$ and no repelling or parabolic periodic bi-accessible points. We show that there are two types of such Julia sets $J_P$. The \emph{red dwarf} $J_P$ are nowhere connected im kleinen and such that the intersection of all impressions of external angles is a continuum containing $p$ and the orbits of all critical images. The \emph{solar} $J_P$ are such that every angle with dense orbit has a degenerate impression disjoint from other impressions and $J_P$ is connected im kleinen at its landing point. We study bi-accessible points and loca…
Let $g$ be a polynomial automorphism of $\C^2$. We study the Hausdorff dimension and topological dimension of the Julia set of $g$. We show that when $g$ is a hyperbolic mapping, then the Hausdorff dimension of the Julia set is strictly greater than its topological dimension. Moreover, the Julia set cannot be locally connected. We also provide estimates for the dimension of the Julia sets in the general (not necessarily hyperbolic) case.
We show that the Hausdorff dimension of the set of points of bounded orbit in the Julia set of a meromorphic map with a simply connected direct tract and a certain restriction on the singular values is strictly greater than one. This result is obtained by proving new results related to Wiman-Valiron theory.
We consider the harmonic measure on a disconnected polynomial Julia set in terms of Brownian motion. We show that the harmonic measure of any connected component of such a Julia set is zero. Associated to the polynomial is a combinatorial model, the tree with dynamics. We define a measure on the tree, which is a combinatorial version on harmonic measure. We show that this measure is isomorphic to the harmonic measure on the Julia set. The measure induces a random walk on the tree, which is isomorphic to Brownian motion in the plane.
The following notes provide an introduction to recent work of Branner, Hubbard and Yoccoz on the geometry of polynomial Julia sets. They are an expanded version of lectures given in Stony Brook in Spring 1992. I am indebted to help from the audience. Section 1 describes unpublished work by J.-C. Yoccoz on local connectivity of quadratic Julia sets. It presents only the "easy" part of his work, in the sense that it considers only non-renormalizable polynomials, and makes no effort to describe the much more difficult arguments which are needed to deal with local connectivity in parameter space. …
In this work we define a stochastic adding machine associated to the Fibonacci base and to a probabilities sequence $\overline{p}=(p_i)_{i\geq 1}$. We obtain a Markov chain whose states are the set of nonnegative integers. We study probabilistic properties of this chain, such as transience and recurrence. We also prove that the spectrum associated to this Markov chain is connected to the fibered Julia sets for a class of endomorphisms in $\mathbb{C}^2$.
We extend the Killeen-Taylor study in \cite{KT} by investigating in different Banach spaces ($\ell^α(\N), c_0(\N),c_c(\N)$) the point, continuous and residual spectra of stochastic perturbations of the shift operator associated to the stochastic adding machine in base 2 and in Fibonacci base. For the base 2, the spectra are connected to the Julia set of a quadratic map. In the Fibonacci case, the spectra involve the Julia set of an endomorphism of $\C^2$.
We study rigidity of rational maps that come from Newton's root finding method for polynomials of arbitrary degrees. We establish dynamical rigidity of these maps: each point in the Julia set of a Newton map is either rigid (i.e. its orbit can be distinguished in combinatorial terms from all other orbits), or the orbit of this point eventually lands in the filled-in Julia set of a polynomial-like restriction of the original map. As a corollary, we show that the Julia sets of Newton maps in many non-trivial cases are locally connected; in particular, every cubic Newton map without Siegel points…
Let $f(z) = z^2 + c$ be a quadratic polynomial, with c in the Mandelbrot set. Assume further that both fixed points of f are repelling, and that f is not renormalizable. Then we prove that the Julia set J of f is holomorphically removable in the sense that every homeomorphism of the complex plane to itself that is conformal off of J is in fact conformal on the entire complex plane. As a corollary, we deduce that the Mandelbrot Set is locally connected at such c.
Julia and Mandelbrot sets, which characterize bounded orbits in dynamical systems over the complex numbers, are classic examples of fractal sets. We investigate the analogs of these sets for dynamical systems over the hyperbolic numbers. Hyperbolic numbers, which have the form $x+τy$ for $x,y \in \mathbb{R}$, and $τ^2 = 1$ but $τ\neq \pm 1$, are the natural number system in which to encode geometric properties of the Minkowski space $\mathbb{R}^{1,1}$. We show that the hyperbolic analog of the Mandelbrot set parameterizes connectedness of hyperbolic Julia sets. We give a wall-and-chamber decom…
In this paper, the main focus is on the Sierpinski carpet Julia sets of the rational maps with non-recurrent critical points. We study the uniform quasicircle property of the peripheral circles, the relatively separated property of the peripheral circles and the locally porous property of these carpets. We also establish some quasisymmetric rigidities of these carpets, which generalizes the main results of Bonk-Lyubich-Merenkov to the postcritically infinite case. In the end we give a strategy to construct a class of postcritically infinite rational maps whose Julia sets are quasisymetrically …
We prove that a nonempty, proper subset $S$ of the complex plane can be approximated in a strong sense by polynomial filled Julia sets if and only if $S$ is bounded and $\hat{\mathbb{C}} \setminus \textrm{int}(S)$ is connected. The proof that such a set is approximable by filled Julia sets is constructive and relies on Fekete polynomials. Illustrative examples are presented. We also prove an estimate for the rate of approximation in terms of geometric and potential theoretic quantities.

We explore geometric properties of the Mandelbrot set M, and the corresponding Julia sets J_c, near the main cardioid. Namely, we establish that: a) M is locally connected at certain infinitely renormalizable parameters c of bounded satellite type, providing first examples of this kind; b) The Julia sets J_c are also locally connected and have positive area; c) M is self-similar near Siegel parameters of constant type. We approach these problems by analyzing the unstable manifold of the pacman renormalization operator constructed in [DLS] as a global transcendental family.
The McMullen-Sullivan holomorphic motion for topologically conjugate, complex polynomials with connected Julia set follows level sets of the Bottcher coordinate. The Buzzard-Verma holomorphic motion for hyperbolic, unstably connected, polynomial diffeomorphisms of C^2 follows level sets of the Bedford-Smillie solenoid map. It follows that this solenoid map is a conjugacy for those Henon maps that are perturbations of (one-dimensional) hyperbolic maps with connected Julia set.
A compactum $X\subset \C$ is unshielded if it coincides with the boundary of the unbounded component of $\C\sm X$. Call a compactum $X$ finitely Suslinian if every collection of pairwise disjoint subcontinua of $X$ whose diameters are bounded away from zero is finite. We show that any unshielded planar compactum $X$ admits a topologically unique monotone map $m_X:X \to X_{FS}$ onto a finitely Suslinian quotient such that any monotone map of $X$ onto a finitely Suslinian quotient factors through $m_X$. We call the pair $(X_{FS},m_X)$ (or, more loosely, $X_{FS}$) the finest finitely Suslinian mo…
We continue the description of Mandelbrot and Multibrot sets and of Julia sets in terms of fibers which was begun in IMS preprints 1998/12 and 1998/13a. The question of local connectivity of these sets is discussed in terms of fibers and becomes the question of triviality of fibers. In this paper, the focus is on the behavior of fibers under renormalization and other surgery procedures. We show that triviality of fibers of Mandelbrot and Multibrot sets is preserved under tuning maps and other (partial) homeomorphisms. Similarly, we show for unicritical polynomials that triviality of fibers of …
A generalized family of transcendental (non-polynomial entire) functions is constructed, where the Hausdorff dimension and the packing dimension of the Julia sets are equal to one. Further, there exist multiply connected wandering domains, the dynamics can be completed described, and for any $s\in(0,+\infty]$, there is a function taken from this family with the order of growth $s$. Baker proved that the Hausdorff dimension of the transcendental function is no less than one in 1975, the minimum value was obtained via an elegant construction by Bishop in 2018. The order of growth is zero in Bish…
In this paper we give a unified proof of the fact that the Julia set of Newton's method applied to a holomorphic function of the complex plane (a polynomial of degree large than $1$ or an entire transcendental function) is connected. The result was recently completed by the authors' previous work, as a consequence of a more general theorem whose proof spreads among many papers, which consider separately a number of particular cases for rational and transcendental maps, and use a variety of techniques. In this note we present a unified, direct and reasonably self-contained proof which works for…
For Cantor circle Julia sets of hyperbolic rational maps, we prove that they are quasisymmetrically equivalent to standard Cantor circles (i.e., connected components are round circles). This gives a quasisymmetric uniformization of all Cantor circle Julia sets of hyperbolic rational maps. By analyzing the combinatorial information of the rational maps whose Julia sets are Cantor circles, we give a computational formula of the number of the Cantor circle hyperbolic components in the moduli space of rational maps for any fixed degree. We calculate the Hausdorff dimensions of the Julia sets which…
We consider the dynamics arising from the iteration of an arbitrary sequence of polynomials with uniformly bounded degrees and coefficients and show that, as parameters vary within a single hyperbolic component in parameter space, certain properties of the corresponding Julia sets are preserved. In particular, we show that if the sequence is hyperbolic and all the Julia sets are connected, then the whole basin at infinity moves holomorphically. This extends also to the landing points of external rays and the resultant holomorphic motion of the Julia sets coincides with that obtained earlier us…
