One of the main questions in the field of complex dynamics is the question whether the Mandelbrot set is locally connected, and related to this, for which maps the Julia set is locally connected. In this paper we shall prove the following
Main Theorem: Let $f$ be a polynomial of the form $f(z)=z^d +c$ with $d$ an even integer and $c$ real. Then the Julia set of $f$ is either totally disconnected or locally connected. In particular, the Julia set of $z^2+c$ is locally connected if $c \in [-2,1/4]$ and totally disconnected otherwise.
We prove that the Julia set $J(f)$ of at most finitely renormalizable unicritical polynomial $f:z\mapsto z^d+c$ with all periodic points repelling is locally connected. (For $d=2$ it was proved by Yoccoz around 1990.) It follows from a priori bounds in a modified Principle Nest of puzzle pieces. The proof of a priori bounds makes use of new analytic tools developed in math.DS/0505191 that give control of moduli of annuli under maps of high degree.
We prove that every transcendental meromorphic map f with a disconnected Julia set has a weakly repelling fixed point. This implies that the Julia set of Newton's method for finding zeroes of an entire map is connected. Moreover, extending a result of Cowen for holomorphic self-maps of the disc, we show the existence of absorbing domains for holomorphic self-maps of hyperbolic regions whose iterates tend to a boundary point. In particular, the results imply that periodic Baker domains of Newton's method for entire maps are simply connected, which solves a well-known open question.
This article deals with the question of local connectivity of the Julia set of polynomials and rational maps. It essentially presents conjectures and questions.
In this paper we give a unified proof of the fact that the Julia set of Newton's method applied to a holomorphic function of the complex plane (a polynomial of degree large than $1$ or an entire transcendental function) is connected. The result was recently completed by the authors' previous work, as a consequence of a more general theorem whose proof spreads among many papers, which consider separately a number of particular cases for rational and transcendental maps, and use a variety of techniques. In this note we present a unified, direct and reasonably self-contained proof which works for…
Using computer graphics and visualization algorithms, we extend in this work the results obtained analytically in [1], on the connectivity domains of alternated Julia sets, defined by switching the dynamics of two quadratic Julia sets. As proved in [1], the alternated Julia sets exhibit, as for polynomials of degree greater than two, the disconnectivity property in addition to the known dichotomy property (connectedness and totally disconnectedness) which characterizes the standard Julia sets. Via computer graphics, we unveil these connectivity domains which are four-dimensional fractals. The …
The following notes provide an introduction to recent work of Branner, Hubbard and Yoccoz on the geometry of polynomial Julia sets. They are an expanded version of lectures given in Stony Brook in Spring 1992. I am indebted to help from the audience. Section 1 describes unpublished work by J.-C. Yoccoz on local connectivity of quadratic Julia sets. It presents only the "easy" part of his work, in the sense that it considers only non-renormalizable polynomials, and makes no effort to describe the much more difficult arguments which are needed to deal with local connectivity in parameter space. …
It has been known since Julia that polynomials commuting under composition have the same Julia set. More recently in the works of Baker and Eremenko, Fernández, and Beardon, results were given on the converse question: When do two polynomials have the same Julia set? We give a complete answer to this question and show the exact relation between the two problems of polynomials with the same Julia set and commuting pairs.
We explore the connected/disconnected dichotomy for the Julia set of polynomial automorphisms of C^2. We develop several aspects of the question, which was first studied by Bedford-Smillie. We introduce a new sufficient condition for the connectivity of the Julia set, that carries over for certain H{é}non-like and birational maps. We study the structure of disconnected Julia sets and the associated invariant currents. This provides a simple approach to some results of Bedford-Smillie, as well as some new corollaries --the connectedness locus is closed, construction of external rays in the gene…
We consider the symmetries of Julia sets of polynomial skew products on C^2, which are birationally conjugate to rotational products. Our main results give the classification of the polynomial skew products whose Julia sets have infinitely many symmetries.
Any finite union of disjoint, mutually exterior Jordan curves in the complex plane can be approximated arbitrarily well in the Hausdorff topology by polynomial Julia sets. Furthermore, the proof is constructive.
For any polynomial diffeomorphism $f$ of ${\Bbb C}^2$ with positive entropy, neither the Julia set of $f$ nor of its inverse $f^{-1}$ is semi-analytic.
A tree, embedded into plane, is a dessin d'enfant and its Belyi function is a polynomial --- Shabat polynomial. The Zapponi form of this polynomial is unique, so we can correspond to an embedded tree the Julia set of its Shabat-Zapponi polynomial. In this purely experimental work we study relations between the form of a tree and properties (form, connectedness, Hausdorff dimension) of its Julia set.
We extend results by Barnsley et al. about orthogonal polynomials on Julia sets to the case of generalized Julia sets. The equilibrium measure is considered. In addition, we discuss optimal smoothness of Green functions and Parreau-Widom criterion for a special family of real generalized Julia sets.
For any polynomial diffeomorphism $f$ of $\mathbb{C}^2$ with positive entropy, neither the Julia set of $f$ nor of its inverse $f^{-1}$ is $C^1$ smooth as a manifold-with-boundary.
We show that the supremum for $c$ real of the Hausdorff dimension of the Julia set of the polynomial $z\mapsto z^d+c$ ($d$ is an even natural number) is greater than $2d/(d+1)$.
Any Jordan curve in the complex plane can be approximated arbitrarily well in the Hausdorff topology by Julia sets of polynomials. Finite collections of disjoint Jordan domains can be approximated by the basins of attraction of rational maps.
The long-standing problem of existence of nowhere dense rational Julia set with positive area has been solved by an example in quadratic polynomials by Buff and Chéritat. Since then many efforts have been devoted to finding out new classes of rational maps with nowhere dense Julia sets having positive area. So far, all known examples of this kind are renormalizable with only one exception which is a quadratic polynomial. In this paper, by developing a new approach, we prove that there exists a non-renormalizable cubic polynomial having a Julia set with positive area.
We prove that the only possible biaccessible points in the Julia set of a Cremer quadratic polynomial are the Cremer fixed point and its preimages. This gives a partial answer to a question posed by C. McMullen on whether such a Julia set can contain any biaccessible point at all
We prove that for every polynomial of one complex variable of degree at least 2 and Julia set not being totally disconnected nor a circle, nor interval, Hausdorff dimension of this Julia set is larger than 1. Till now this was known only in the connected Julia set case. We give also an example of a polynomial with non-connected but not totally disconnected Julia set and such that all its components comprising of more than single points are analytic arcs, thus resolving a question by Christopher Bishop, who asked whether every such component must have Hausdorff dimension larger than 1.
We investigate the set of biaccessible points for connected polynomial Julia sets of arbitrary degrees $d\geq 2$. We prove that the Hausdorff dimension of the set of external angles corresponding to biaccessible points is less than 1, unless the Julia set is an interval. This strengthens theorems of Stanislav Smirnov and Anna Zdunik: they proved that the same set of external angles has zero 1-dimensional measure.
We consider the harmonic measure on a disconnected polynomial Julia set in terms of Brownian motion. We show that the harmonic measure of any connected component of such a Julia set is zero. Associated to the polynomial is a combinatorial model, the tree with dynamics. We define a measure on the tree, which is a combinatorial version on harmonic measure. We show that this measure is isomorphic to the harmonic measure on the Julia set. The measure induces a random walk on the tree, which is isomorphic to Brownian motion in the plane.
In this paper we shall show that there exists L_0 such that for each even integer L >= L_0 there exists $c_1 \in \rz$ for which the Julia set of $z --> z^L + c_1$ has positive Lebesgue measure. This solves an old problem. Editor's note: In 1997, it was shown by Xavier Buff that there was a serious flaw in the argument, leaving a gap in the proof. Currently (1999), the question of polynomials with a positive measure Julia sets remains open.
Let $(f_n)_{n=1}^\infty$ be a sequence of nonlinear polynomials satisfying some mild conditions. Furthermore, let $F_m(z)=(f_m\circ f_{m-1}\ldots \circ f_1)(z)$ and $ρ_m$ be the leading coefficient for $F_m$. It is shown that on the Julia set $J_{(f_n)}$, the Chebyshev polynomial of the degree deg${F_m}$ is of the form $F_m(z)/ρ_m-τ_m$ for all $m\in\mathbb{N}$ where $τ_m\in\mathbb{C}$. This generalizes the result obtained for autonomous Julia sets.
We explore geometric properties of the Mandelbrot set M, and the corresponding Julia sets J_c, near the main cardioid. Namely, we establish that: a) M is locally connected at certain infinitely renormalizable parameters c of bounded satellite type, providing first examples of this kind; b) The Julia sets J_c are also locally connected and have positive area; c) M is self-similar near Siegel parameters of constant type. We approach these problems by analyzing the unstable manifold of the pacman renormalization operator constructed in [DLS] as a global transcendental family.
We prove fixed point results for branched covering maps $f$ of the plane. For complex polynomials $P$ with Julia set $J_P$ these imply that periodic cutpoints of some invariant subcontinua of $J_P$ are also cutpoints of $J_P$. We deduce that, under certain assumptions on invariant subcontinua $Q$ of $J_P$, every Riemann ray to $Q$ landing at a periodic repelling/parabolic point $x\in Q$ is isotopic to a Riemann ray to $J_P$ relative to $Q$.
We study numerically the $α$- and $ω$-limits of the Newton maps of two of the most elementary families of polynomial transformations on the plane: those with a linear component and those with both components of degree two. Our results are fully consistent with some conjectures we posed in a recent work about the dynamics of Newton maps.
For an infinitely renormalizable quadratic map $f_c: z\mapsto z^2+c$ with the sequence of renormalization periods ${k_m}$ and rotation numbers ${t_m=p_m/q_m}, we prove that if $\limsup k_m^{-1}\log |p_m|>0$, then the Mandelbrot set is locally connected at $c$. We prove also that if $\limsup |t_{m+1}|^{1/q_m}<1$ and $q_m\to \infty$, then the Julia set of $f_c$ is not locally connected and the Mandelbrot set is locally connected at $c$ provided that all the renormalizations are non-primitive (satellite). This quantifies a construction of A. Douady and J. Hubbard, and weakens a condition proposed…
According to the Thurston No Wandering Triangle Theorem, a branching point in a locally connected quadratic Julia set is either preperiodic or precritical. Blokh and Oversteegen proved that this theorem does not hold for higher degree Julia sets: there exist cubic polynomials whose Julia set is a locally connected dendrite with a branching point which is neither preperiodic nor precritical. In this article, we reprove this result, constructing such cubic polynomials as limits of cubic polynomials for which one critical point eventually maps to the other critical point which eventually maps to …
Let $f:z\mapsto z^2+c$ be a quadratic polynomial whose Julia set $J$ is locally-connected of the set of biaccessible points in $J$ is zero except when $f(z)=z^2-2$ is the Chebyshev quadratic polynomial for which the corresponding measure is one.
We introduce a notion of asymptotically orthonormal polynomials for a Borel measure $μ$ with compact nonpolar support in $\mathbb{C}$. Such sequences of polynomials have similar convergence properties of the sequences of Julia sets and filled Julia sets to those for sequences of orthonormal polynomials. We give examples of measures for which the monic orthogonal polynomials are asymptotically orthonormal. Combining this with observations on conformal invariance of orthogonal polynomials we explore the measure dependency of the associated dynamics of orthogonal polynomials. Concretely, we study…
For a sequence of complex parameters $\{c_n\}$ we consider the compositions of functions $f_{c_n} (z) = z^2 + c_n$, which is the non-autonomous version of the classical quadratic dynamical system. The definitions of Julia and Fatou sets are naturally generalized to this setting. We answer a question posed by Brück, Büger and Reitz, whether the Julia set for such a sequence is almost always totally disconnected, if the values $c_n$ are chosen randomly from a large disk. Our proof is easily generalized to answer a lot of other related questions regarding typical connectivity of the random Julia …
For maps of one complex variable, $f$, given as the sum of a degree $n$ power map and a degree $d$ polynomial, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions that the geometric limit as $n$ approaches infinity of the set of points that remain bounded under iteration by $f$ is the closed unit disk or the unit circle. We also provide a general description, for many cases, of the limiting set.
Let $g$ be a polynomial automorphism of $\C^2$. We study the Hausdorff dimension and topological dimension of the Julia set of $g$. We show that when $g$ is a hyperbolic mapping, then the Hausdorff dimension of the Julia set is strictly greater than its topological dimension. Moreover, the Julia set cannot be locally connected. We also provide estimates for the dimension of the Julia sets in the general (not necessarily hyperbolic) case.
We study the dynamics of polynomials with coefficients in a non-Archimedean field $K,$ where $K$ is a field containing a dense subset of algebraic elements over a discrete valued field $k.$ We prove that every wandering Fatou component is contained in the basin of a periodic orbit. We obtain a complete description of the new Julia set points that appear when passing from $K$ to the Berkovich line over $K$. We give a dynamical characterization of polynomials having algebraic Julia sets. More precisely, we establish that a polynomial with algebraic coefficients has algebraic Julia set if every c…
The goal of this note is to prove the following theorem: Let $p_a(z) = z^2+a$ be a quadratic polynomial which has no irrational indifferent periodic points, and is not infinitely renormalizable. Then the Lebesgue measure of the Julia set $J(p_a)$ is equal to zero. As part of the proof we discuss a property of the critical point to be {\it persistently recurrent}, and relate our results to corresponding ones for real one dimensional maps. In particular, we show that in the persistently recurrent case the restriction $p_a|ω(0)$ is topologically minimal and has zero topological entropy. The Douad…
Let $f$ be a quadratic polynomial which has an irrationally indifferent fixed point $α$. Let $z$ be a biaccessible point in the Julia set of $f$. Then: 1. In the Siegel case, the orbit of $z$ must eventually hit the critical point of $f$. 2. In the Cremer case, the orbit of $z$ must eventually hit the fixed point $α$. Siegel polynomials with biaccessible critical point certainly exist, but in the Cremer case it is possible that biaccessible points can never exist. As a corollary, we conclude that the set of biaccessible points in the Julia set of a Siegel or Cremer quadratic polynomial has Bro…
Let $d(δ)$ denote the Hausdorff dimension of the Julia set of the polynomial $f_δ(z)=z^2-2+δ$. In this paper we will study the directional derivative of the function $d$ along directions landing at the parameter $0$, which corresponds to $-2$ in the case of family $p_c(z)=z^2+c$. We will consider all directions, except the one $δ\in\mathbb{R}^+$, which is inside the Mandelbrot set. We will prove asymptotic formula for the directional derivative of $d$. Moreover, we will see that the derivative is negative for all directions in the closed left half-plane. Computer calculations show that it is n…
We present the first example of a poly-time computable Julia set with a recurrent critical point: we prove that the Julia set of the Feigenbaum map is computable in polynomial time.

This article gives a precise description of the Fatou sets and Julia sets of matrix-valued polynomials in $\mathcal{M}(2,\mathbb{C})$ in terms of the corresponding polynomials in $\mathbb{C}$. Further, we construct Green functions and Böttcher-type functions for these matrix-valued polynomials.
We prove that similarly to the standard case, the equilibrium measure of Julia sets of exceptional Jacobi polynomials tends to the equilibrium measure of the interval of orthogonality in weak-star sense.
In this paper we settle most of the open questions on algorithmic computability of Julia sets. In particular, we present an algorithm for constructing quadratics whose Julia sets are uncomputable. We also show that a filled Julia set of a polynomial is always computable.
We prove that the Julia set of a rational function $f$ is computable in polynomial time, assuming that the postcritical set of $f$ does not contain any critical points or parabolic periodic orbits.
Let $d(\varepsilon)$ and $\mathcal D(δ)$ denote the Hausdorff dimension of the Julia sets of the polynomials $p_\varepsilon(z)=z^2+1/4+\varepsilon$ and $f_δ(z)=(1+δ)z+z^2$ respectively. In this paper we will study the directional derivative of the functions $d(\varepsilon)$ and $\mathcal D(δ)$ along directions landing at the parameter $0$, which corresponds to $1/4$ in the case of family $z^2+c$. We will consider all directions, except the one $\varepsilon\in\mathbb{R}^+$ (or two imaginary directions in the $δ$ parametrization) which is outside the Mandelbrot set and is related to the paraboli…
The no invariant line fields conjecture is one of the main outstanding problems in traditional complex dynamics. In this paper we consider non-autonomous iteration where one works with compositions of sequences of polynomials with suitable bounds on the degrees and coefficients. We show that the natural generalization of the no invariant line fields conjecture to this setting is not true. In particular, we construct a sequence of quadratic polynomials whose iterated Julia sets all have positive area and which has an invariant sequence of measurable line fields whose supports are these iterated…
We construct Feigenbaum quadratic polynomials whose Julia sets have positive Lebesgue measure. They provide first examples of rational maps for which the hyperbolic dimension is different from the Hausdorff dimension of the Julia set. The corresponding set of parameters has positive Hausdorff dimension.
Since the 1980s, much progress has been done in completely determining which functions share a Julia set. The polynomial case was completely solved in 1995, and it was shown that the symmetries of the Julia set play a central role in answering this question. The rational case remains open, but it was already shown to be much more complex than the polynomial one. Here, we offer partial extensions to Beardon's results on the symmetry group of Julia sets, and discuss them in the context of singularly perturbed maps.
We study the possible Hausdorff limits of the Julia sets and filled Julia sets of subsequences of the sequence of dual Chebyshev polynomials of a non-polar compact set K in C and compare such limits to K. Moreover, we prove that the measures of maximal entropy for the sequence of dual Chebyshev polynomials of K converges weak* to the equilibrium measure on K.
Given a polynomial $p$, the degree of its Chebyshev's method $C_p$ is determined. If $p$ is cubic then the degree of $C_p$ is found to be $4,6$ or $7$ and we investigate the dynamics of $C_p$ in these cases. If a cubic polynomial $p$ is unicritical or non-generic then, it is proved that the Julia set of $C_p$ is connected. The family of all rational maps arising as the Chebyshev's method applied to a cubic polynomial which is non-unicritical and generic is parametrized by the multiplier of one of its extraneous fixed points. Denoting a member of this family with an extraneous fixed point with …
