For a sequence of complex parameters $\{c_n\}$ we consider the compositions of functions $f_{c_n} (z) = z^2 + c_n$, which is the non-autonomous version of the classical quadratic dynamical system. The definitions of Julia and Fatou sets are naturally generalized to this setting. We answer a question posed by Brück, Büger and Reitz, whether the Julia set for such a sequence is almost always totally disconnected, if the values $c_n$ are chosen randomly from a large disk. Our proof is easily generalized to answer a lot of other related questions regarding typical connectivity of the random Julia set. In fact we prove the statement for a much larger family of sets than just disks, in particular if one picks $c_n$ randomly from the main cardioid of the Mandelbrot set, then the Julia set is still almost always totally disconnected.
Using computer graphics and visualization algorithms, we extend in this work the results obtained analytically in [1], on the connectivity domains of alternated Julia sets, defined by switching the dynamics of two quadratic Julia sets. As proved in [1], the alternated Julia sets exhibit, as for polynomials of degree greater than two, the disconnectivity property in addition to the known dichotomy property (connectedness and totally disconnectedness) which characterizes the standard Julia sets. Via computer graphics, we unveil these connectivity domains which are four-dimensional fractals. The …
In this paper we characterize $\w$-limit sets of dendritic Julia sets for quadratic maps. We use Baldwin's symbolic representation of these spaces as a non-Hausdorff itinerary space and prove that quadratic maps with dendritic Julia sets have shadowing, and also that for all such maps, a closed invariant set is an $\w$-limit set of a point if, and only if, it is internally chain transitive.
We study numerically the $α$- and $ω$-limits of the Newton maps of two of the most elementary families of polynomial transformations on the plane: those with a linear component and those with both components of degree two. Our results are fully consistent with some conjectures we posed in a recent work about the dynamics of Newton maps.
We continue the study of constructing invariant Laplacians on Julia sets, and studying properties of their spectra. In this paper we focus on two types of examples: 1) Julia sets of cubic polynomials $z^3 + c$ with a single critical point; 2) formal matings of quadratic Julia sets. The general scheme introduced in earlier papers in this series involves realizing the Julia set as a circle with identifications, and attempting to obtain the Laplacian as a renormalized limit of graph Laplacians on graphs derived form the circle with identifications model. In the case of cubic Julia sets the detail…
Let $d(δ)$ denote the Hausdorff dimension of the Julia set of the polynomial $f_δ(z)=z^2-2+δ$. In this paper we will study the directional derivative of the function $d$ along directions landing at the parameter $0$, which corresponds to $-2$ in the case of family $p_c(z)=z^2+c$. We will consider all directions, except the one $δ\in\mathbb{R}^+$, which is inside the Mandelbrot set. We will prove asymptotic formula for the directional derivative of $d$. Moreover, we will see that the derivative is negative for all directions in the closed left half-plane. Computer calculations show that it is n…
The long-standing problem of existence of nowhere dense rational Julia set with positive area has been solved by an example in quadratic polynomials by Buff and Chéritat. Since then many efforts have been devoted to finding out new classes of rational maps with nowhere dense Julia sets having positive area. So far, all known examples of this kind are renormalizable with only one exception which is a quadratic polynomial. In this paper, by developing a new approach, we prove that there exists a non-renormalizable cubic polynomial having a Julia set with positive area.
We construct Feigenbaum quadratic polynomials whose Julia sets have positive Lebesgue measure. They provide first examples of rational maps for which the hyperbolic dimension is different from the Hausdorff dimension of the Julia set. The corresponding set of parameters has positive Hausdorff dimension.
Let $d(\varepsilon)$ and $\mathcal D(δ)$ denote the Hausdorff dimension of the Julia sets of the polynomials $p_\varepsilon(z)=z^2+1/4+\varepsilon$ and $f_δ(z)=(1+δ)z+z^2$ respectively. In this paper we will study the directional derivative of the functions $d(\varepsilon)$ and $\mathcal D(δ)$ along directions landing at the parameter $0$, which corresponds to $1/4$ in the case of family $z^2+c$. We will consider all directions, except the one $\varepsilon\in\mathbb{R}^+$ (or two imaginary directions in the $δ$ parametrization) which is outside the Mandelbrot set and is related to the paraboli…
Using parabolic enrichment, it is shown that Gronwall area formula for the filled Julia set along the boundary of the main cardioid of the Mandelbrot set cannot be well approximated by replacing it by a finite sum. A revised version of this article will appear in the Journal of the London Mathematical Society.
We show that there exist real parameters $c$ for which the Julia set $J_c$ of the quadratic map $z^2+c$ has arbitrarily high computational complexity. More precisely, we show that for any given complexity threshold $T(n)$, there exist a real parameter $c$ such that the computational complexity of computing $J_c$ with $n$ bits of precision is higher than $T(n)$. This is the first known class of real parameters with a non poly-time computable Julia set.
We study asymptotic dynamics in networks of coupled quadratic nodes. While single map complex quadratic iterations have been studied over the past century, considering ensembles of such functions, organized as coupled nodes in a network, generate new questions with potentially interesting applications to the life sciences. We investigate how traditional Fatou-Julia results may generalize in the case of networks. We discuss extensions of concepts like escape radius, Julia and Mandelbrot sets (as parameter loci in $\mathbb{C}^n$, where $n$ is the size of the network). We study topological proper…
We present eigenvalue data and pictures of eigenfunctions of the classic and quadratic snowflake fractal and of quadratic filled Julia sets. Furthermore, we approximate the area and box-counting dimension of selected Julia sets to compare the eigenvalue counting function with the Weyl term.
Hyperbolic numbers are a variation of complex numbers, but their dynamics is quite different. The hyperbolic Mandelbrot set for quadratic functions over hyperbolic numbers is simply a filled square, and the filled Julia set for hyperbolic parameters inside the hyperbolic Mandelbrot set is a filled rectangle. For hyperbolic parameters outside the hyperbolic Mandelbrot set, the filled Julia set has 3 possible topological descriptions, if it is not empty, in contrast to the complex case where it is always a non-empty totally disconnected set. These results were proved in [1,2,4,5,6,7] and are rev…
According to the Thurston No Wandering Triangle Theorem, a branching point in a locally connected quadratic Julia set is either preperiodic or precritical. Blokh and Oversteegen proved that this theorem does not hold for higher degree Julia sets: there exist cubic polynomials whose Julia set is a locally connected dendrite with a branching point which is neither preperiodic nor precritical. In this article, we reprove this result, constructing such cubic polynomials as limits of cubic polynomials for which one critical point eventually maps to the other critical point which eventually maps to …
We extend the Killeen-Taylor study in \cite{KT} by investigating in different Banach spaces ($\ell^α(\N), c_0(\N),c_c(\N)$) the point, continuous and residual spectra of stochastic perturbations of the shift operator associated to the stochastic adding machine in base 2 and in Fibonacci base. For the base 2, the spectra are connected to the Julia set of a quadratic map. In the Fibonacci case, the spectra involve the Julia set of an endomorphism of $\C^2$.
The no invariant line fields conjecture is one of the main outstanding problems in traditional complex dynamics. In this paper we consider non-autonomous iteration where one works with compositions of sequences of polynomials with suitable bounds on the degrees and coefficients. We show that the natural generalization of the no invariant line fields conjecture to this setting is not true. In particular, we construct a sequence of quadratic polynomials whose iterated Julia sets all have positive area and which has an invariant sequence of measurable line fields whose supports are these iterated…
A. Sannami constructed an example of the differentiable Cantor set embedded in the real line whose difference set has a positive measure. In this paper, we generalize the definition of the difference sets for sets of the two dimensional Euclidean space as the sets of vectors between two sets, and estimate their measures. For the quadratic map Q_c(z)=z^2+c, we obtain that the measure of the difference set of its Julia set vanishes if |c|>3+sqrt{3}.
We discuss computability of impressions of prime ends of compact sets. In particular, we construct quadratic Julia sets which possess explicitly described non-computable impressions.
For an infinitely renormalizable quadratic map $f_c: z\mapsto z^2+c$ with the sequence of renormalization periods ${k_m}$ and rotation numbers ${t_m=p_m/q_m}, we prove that if $\limsup k_m^{-1}\log |p_m|>0$, then the Mandelbrot set is locally connected at $c$. We prove also that if $\limsup |t_{m+1}|^{1/q_m}<1$ and $q_m\to \infty$, then the Julia set of $f_c$ is not locally connected and the Mandelbrot set is locally connected at $c$ provided that all the renormalizations are non-primitive (satellite). This quantifies a construction of A. Douady and J. Hubbard, and weakens a condition proposed…
We show that the Julia set of quadratic maps with parameters in hyperbolic components of the Mandelbrot set is given by a transseries formula, rapidly convergent at any repelling periodic point. Up to conformal transformations, we obtain $J$ from a smoother curve of lower Hausdorff dimension, by replacing pieces of the more regular curve by increasingly rescaled elementary "bricks" obtained from the transseries expression. Self-similarity of $J$, up to conformal transformation, is manifest in the formulas. The Hausdorff dimension of $J$ is estimated by the transseries formula. The analysis ext…
A closed interval and circle are the only smooth Julia sets in polynomial dynamics. D. Ruelle proved that the Hausdorff dimension of unicritical Julia sets close to the circle depends analytically on the parameter. Near the tip of the Mandelbrot set M, the Hausdorff dimension is generally discontinuous. Answering a question of J-C. Yoccoz in the conformal setting, we observe that the Hausdorff dimension of quadratic Julia sets depends continuously on $c$ and find explicit bounds at the tip of M for most real parameters in the the sense of 1-dimensional Lebesgue measure.
A point $z$ in the Julia set of a polynomial $p$ is called biaccessible if two dynamic rays land at $z$; a point $z$ in the Mandelbrot set is called biaccessible if two parameter rays land at $z$. In both cases, we say that the external angles of these two rays are biaccessible as well. In this paper we give upper and lower bounds for the Hausdorff dimension of biaccessible external angles of quadratic polynomials, both in the dynamical and parameter space. In particular, explicitly describe those quadratic polynomials where this dimension equals 1 (if and only if the Julia set is an interval)…
The behavior of orbits for iterated logistic maps has been widely studied since the dawn of discrete dynamics as a research field, in particular in the context of the complex quadratic family. However, little is is known about orbit behavior if the map changes along with the iterations. We investigate in which ways the traditional theory of Fatou-Julia may still apply in this case, illustrating how the iteration pattern (symbolic template) can affect the topology of the Julia and Mandelbrot sets. We briefly discuss the potential of this extension towards a variety of applications in genetic an…
We investigate the dynamics of $2$-generator semigroups of polynomials with bounded planar postcritical set and associated random dynamics on the Riemann sphere. Also, we investigate the space ${\cal B}$ of such semigroups. We show that for a parameter $h$ in the intersection of ${\cal B}$, the hyperbolicity locus ${\cal H}$ and the closure of the disconnectedness locus (the space of parameters for which the Julia set is disconnected), the corresponding semigroup satisfies either the open set condition (and the Bowen's formula) or that the Julia sets of the two generators coincide. Also, we sh…
We give a combinatorial definition of "core entropy" for quadratic polynomials as the growth exponent of the number of certain precritical points in the Julia set (those that separate the $α$ fixed point from its negative). This notion extends known definitions that work in cases when the polynomial is postcritically finite or when the topology of the Julia set has good properties, and it applies to all quadratic polynomials in the Mandelbrot set. We prove that core entropy is continuous as a function of the complex parameter. In fact, we model the Julia set as an invariant quadratic laminatio…
A small perturbation of a quadratic polynomial with a non-repelling fixed point gives a polynomial with an attracting fixed point and a Jordan curve Julia set, on which the perturbed polynomial acts like angle doubling. However, there are cubic polynomials with a non-repelling fixed point, for which no perturbation results into a polynomial with Jordan curve Julia set. Motivated by the study of the closure of the Cubic Principal Hyperbolic Domain, we describe such polynomials in terms of their quadratic-like restrictions.
Let f be an infinitely-renormalizable quadratic polynomial and J_\infty be the intersection of forward orbits of "small" Julia sets of simple renormalizations of f. We prove that J_\infty contains no hyperbolic sets.
Local similarity between the Mandelbrot set and quadratic Julia sets manifests itself in a variety of ways. We discuss a combinatorial one, in the language of geodesic laminations. More precisely, we compare quadratic invariant laminations representing Julia sets with the so-called Quadratic Minor Lamination (QML) representing a locally connected model of the Mandelbrot set. Similarly to the construction of an invariant lamination by pullbacks of certain leaves, we describe how QML can be generated by properly understood pullbacks of certain minors. In particular, we show that the minors of al…
Working within the polynomial quadratic family, we introduce a new point of view on bifurcations which naturally allows to see the seat of bifurcations as the projection of a Julia set of a complex dynamical system in dimension three. We expect our approach to be extendable to other holomorphic families of dynamical systems.
