In this paper we settle most of the open questions on algorithmic computability of Julia sets. In particular, we present an algorithm for constructing quadratics whose Julia sets are uncomputable. We also show that a filled Julia set of a polynomial is always computable.
We present the first example of a poly-time computable Julia set with a recurrent critical point: we prove that the Julia set of the Feigenbaum map is computable in polynomial time.
We prove that the Julia set of a rational function $f$ is computable in polynomial time, assuming that the postcritical set of $f$ does not contain any critical points or parabolic periodic orbits.
We show that under the definition of computability which is natural from the point of view of applications, there exist non-computable quadratic Julia sets.
We discuss computability of impressions of prime ends of compact sets. In particular, we construct quadratic Julia sets which possess explicitly described non-computable impressions.
We continue the study of constructing invariant Laplacians on Julia sets, and studying properties of their spectra. In this paper we focus on two types of examples: 1) Julia sets of cubic polynomials $z^3 + c$ with a single critical point; 2) formal matings of quadratic Julia sets. The general scheme introduced in earlier papers in this series involves realizing the Julia set as a circle with identifications, and attempting to obtain the Laplacian as a renormalized limit of graph Laplacians on graphs derived form the circle with identifications model. In the case of cubic Julia sets the detail…
In this paper, we give a family of rational maps whose Julia sets are Cantor circles and show that every rational map whose Julia set is a Cantor set of circles must be topologically conjugate to one map in this family on their corresponding Julia sets. In particular, we give the specific expressions of some rational maps whose Julia sets are Cantor circles, but they are not topologically conjugate to any McMullen maps on their Julia sets. Moreover, some non-hyperbolic rational maps whose Julia sets are Cantor circles are also constructed.
We extend results by Barnsley et al. about orthogonal polynomials on Julia sets to the case of generalized Julia sets. The equilibrium measure is considered. In addition, we discuss optimal smoothness of Green functions and Parreau-Widom criterion for a special family of real generalized Julia sets.
In this paper we characterize $\w$-limit sets of dendritic Julia sets for quadratic maps. We use Baldwin's symbolic representation of these spaces as a non-Hausdorff itinerary space and prove that quadratic maps with dendritic Julia sets have shadowing, and also that for all such maps, a closed invariant set is an $\w$-limit set of a point if, and only if, it is internally chain transitive.
We construct Feigenbaum quadratic polynomials whose Julia sets have positive Lebesgue measure. They provide first examples of rational maps for which the hyperbolic dimension is different from the Hausdorff dimension of the Julia set. The corresponding set of parameters has positive Hausdorff dimension.
We consider the symmetries of Julia sets of polynomial skew products on C^2, which are birationally conjugate to rotational products. Our main results give the classification of the polynomial skew products whose Julia sets have infinitely many symmetries.
Any finite union of disjoint, mutually exterior Jordan curves in the complex plane can be approximated arbitrarily well in the Hausdorff topology by polynomial Julia sets. Furthermore, the proof is constructive.
We prove that if $ξ$ is a quasisymmetric homeomorphism between Sierpiński carpets that are the Julia sets of postcritically-finite rational maps, then $ξ$ is the restriction of a Möbius transformation to the Julia set. This implies that the group of quasisymmetric homeomorphisms of a Sierpiński carpet Julia set of a postcritically-finite rational map is finite.
We consider the Hausdorff measure of Julia sets and escaping sets of exponential maps with respect to certain gauge functions. We give conditions on the growth of the gauge function which imply that the measure is zero or infinity, respectively.
In this article, we introduce the adapted inverse iteration method to generate bicomplex Julia sets associated to the polynomial map $w^2+c$. The result is based on a full characterization of bicomplex Julia sets as the boundary of a particular bicomplex cartesian set and the study of the fixed points of $w^2+c$. The inverse iteration method is used in particular to generate and display in the usual 3-dimensional space bicomplex Julia sets that are dendrites.
For any polynomial diffeomorphism $f$ of ${\Bbb C}^2$ with positive entropy, neither the Julia set of $f$ nor of its inverse $f^{-1}$ is semi-analytic.
We prove that the Julia set of a rational map of the Riemann sphere satisfying the Collet-Eckmann condition and having no parabolic periodic point is mean porous, if it is not the whole sphere. It follows that the Minkowski dimension of the Julia set is less than 2.
The Fatou-Julia decomposition is significant in the study of iterations of holomorphic mappings. Such a decomposition can be also considered for foliations in a unified manner. Although the decomposition will be fundamental in the study, it is not easy to decide the decomposition. In this article, we give a sufficient condition for open sets to be contained in Fatou sets. We also discuss relations between Fatou--Julia decompositions and minimal sets.
Any Jordan curve in the complex plane can be approximated arbitrarily well in the Hausdorff topology by Julia sets of polynomials. Finite collections of disjoint Jordan domains can be approximated by the basins of attraction of rational maps.
Let $f$ be a rational map with degree $d\geq 2$ whose Julia set is connected but not equal to the whole Riemann sphere. It is proved that there exists a rational map $g$ such that $g$ contains a buried Julia component on which the dynamics is quasiconformally conjugate to that of $f$ on the Julia set if and only if $f$ does not have parabolic basins and Siegel disks. If such $g$ exists, then the degree can be chosen such that $\text{deg}(g)\leq 7d-2$. In particular, if $f$ is a polynomial, then $g$ can be chosen such that $\text{deg}(g)\leq 4d+4$. Moreover, some quartic and cubic rational maps…
For any polynomial diffeomorphism $f$ of $\mathbb{C}^2$ with positive entropy, neither the Julia set of $f$ nor of its inverse $f^{-1}$ is $C^1$ smooth as a manifold-with-boundary.
We give an introduction to buried points in Julia sets and a list of questions about buried points, written to encourage aficionados of topology and dynamics to work on these questions.
We investigate the set of biaccessible points for connected polynomial Julia sets of arbitrary degrees $d\geq 2$. We prove that the Hausdorff dimension of the set of external angles corresponding to biaccessible points is less than 1, unless the Julia set is an interval. This strengthens theorems of Stanislav Smirnov and Anna Zdunik: they proved that the same set of external angles has zero 1-dimensional measure.
Julia and Mandelbrot sets, which characterize bounded orbits in dynamical systems over the complex numbers, are classic examples of fractal sets. We investigate the analogs of these sets for dynamical systems over the hyperbolic numbers. Hyperbolic numbers, which have the form $x+τy$ for $x,y \in \mathbb{R}$, and $τ^2 = 1$ but $τ\neq \pm 1$, are the natural number system in which to encode geometric properties of the Minkowski space $\mathbb{R}^{1,1}$. We show that the hyperbolic analog of the Mandelbrot set parameterizes connectedness of hyperbolic Julia sets. We give a wall-and-chamber decom…
We show that the supremum for $c$ real of the Hausdorff dimension of the Julia set of the polynomial $z\mapsto z^d+c$ ($d$ is an even natural number) is greater than $2d/(d+1)$.
For any integers $d\ge 3$ and $n\ge 1$, we construct a hyperbolic rational map of degree $d$ such that it has $n$ cycles of the connected components of its Julia set except single points and Jordan curves.
Let $d(c)$ denote the Hausdorff dimension of the Julia set $J_c$ of the polynomial $f_c(z)=z^2+c$. We will investigate behavior of the function $d(c)$ when real parameter $c$ tends to a parabolic parameter.
Let $f:z\mapsto z^2+c$ be a quadratic polynomial whose Julia set $J$ is locally-connected of the set of biaccessible points in $J$ is zero except when $f(z)=z^2-2$ is the Chebyshev quadratic polynomial for which the corresponding measure is one.
We introduce new variants of the notion of geometric pressure for rational functions on the Riemann sphere, including non-hyperbolic functions, in the hope some of them occur useful to achieve a fast approximation from below of the hyperbolic Hausdorff dimension of Julia set.
Let $ R $ be a rational map with totally disconnected Julia set $ J(R). $ If the postcritical set on $ J(R) $ contains a non-persistently recurrent (or conical) point, then we show that the map $ R $ can not be a structurally stable map.
In this paper we introduce the notion of dynamical systems over the class of the normed real nonassociative algebras not necessarily finite-dimensional, generalize the classical filled Julia and Mandelbrot sets over the complex numbers, investigate their orbits and make a topological analysis. Applications of the obtained results are made.
In holomorphic semigroup dynamics, Julia set is in general backward invariant and so some fundamental results of classical complex dynamics can not be generalized to semigroup dynamics. In this paper, we define completely invariant Julia set of transcendental semigroup and we see how far the results of classical transcendental dynamics generalized to transcendental semigroup dynamics.
The long-standing problem of existence of nowhere dense rational Julia set with positive area has been solved by an example in quadratic polynomials by Buff and Chéritat. Since then many efforts have been devoted to finding out new classes of rational maps with nowhere dense Julia sets having positive area. So far, all known examples of this kind are renormalizable with only one exception which is a quadratic polynomial. In this paper, by developing a new approach, we prove that there exists a non-renormalizable cubic polynomial having a Julia set with positive area.
A tree, embedded into plane, is a dessin d'enfant and its Belyi function is a polynomial --- Shabat polynomial. The Zapponi form of this polynomial is unique, so we can correspond to an embedded tree the Julia set of its Shabat-Zapponi polynomial. In this purely experimental work we study relations between the form of a tree and properties (form, connectedness, Hausdorff dimension) of its Julia set.
We prove that a polynomial Julia set which is a finitely irreducible continuum is either an arc or an indecomposable continuum. For the more general case of rational functions, we give a topological model for the dynamics when the Julia set is an irreducible continuum and all indecomposable subcontinua have empty interior.
A. Sannami constructed an example of the differentiable Cantor set embedded in the real line whose difference set has a positive measure. In this paper, we generalize the definition of the difference sets for sets of the two dimensional Euclidean space as the sets of vectors between two sets, and estimate their measures. For the quadratic map Q_c(z)=z^2+c, we obtain that the measure of the difference set of its Julia set vanishes if |c|>3+sqrt{3}.
We prove that for meromorphic maps with logarithmic tracts (e.g. entire or meromorphic maps with a finite number of poles from class $\mathcal B$), the Julia set contains a compact invariant hyperbolic Cantor set of Hausdorff dimension greater than 1. Hence, the hyperbolic dimension of the Julia set is greater than 1.
It is shown that the boundary of the Mandelbrot set $M$ has Hausdorff dimension two and that for a generic $c \in \bM$, the Julia set of $z \mapsto z^2+c$ also has Hausdorff dimension two. The proof is based on the study of the bifurcation of parabolic periodic points.
According to the Thurston No Wandering Triangle Theorem, a branching point in a locally connected quadratic Julia set is either preperiodic or precritical. Blokh and Oversteegen proved that this theorem does not hold for higher degree Julia sets: there exist cubic polynomials whose Julia set is a locally connected dendrite with a branching point which is neither preperiodic nor precritical. In this article, we reprove this result, constructing such cubic polynomials as limits of cubic polynomials for which one critical point eventually maps to the other critical point which eventually maps to …
The no invariant line fields conjecture is one of the main outstanding problems in traditional complex dynamics. In this paper we consider non-autonomous iteration where one works with compositions of sequences of polynomials with suitable bounds on the degrees and coefficients. We show that the natural generalization of the no invariant line fields conjecture to this setting is not true. In particular, we construct a sequence of quadratic polynomials whose iterated Julia sets all have positive area and which has an invariant sequence of measurable line fields whose supports are these iterated…
A closed interval and circle are the only smooth Julia sets in polynomial dynamics. D. Ruelle proved that the Hausdorff dimension of unicritical Julia sets close to the circle depends analytically on the parameter. Near the tip of the Mandelbrot set M, the Hausdorff dimension is generally discontinuous. Answering a question of J-C. Yoccoz in the conformal setting, we observe that the Hausdorff dimension of quadratic Julia sets depends continuously on $c$ and find explicit bounds at the tip of M for most real parameters in the the sense of 1-dimensional Lebesgue measure.
By means of a nested sequence of some critical pieces constructed by Kozlovski, Shen, and van Strien, and by using a covering lemma recently proved by Kahn and Lyubich, we prove that the Julia set of a polynomial is a Cantor set if and only if each component of the filled-in Julia set containing critical points is aperiodic. This result was a conjecture raised by Branner and Hubbard in 1992.
We continue the description of Mandelbrot and Multibrot sets and of Julia sets in terms of fibers which was begun in IMS preprints 1998/12 and 1998/13a. The question of local connectivity of these sets is discussed in terms of fibers and becomes the question of triviality of fibers. In this paper, the focus is on the behavior of fibers under renormalization and other surgery procedures. We show that triviality of fibers of Mandelbrot and Multibrot sets is preserved under tuning maps and other (partial) homeomorphisms. Similarly, we show for unicritical polynomials that triviality of fibers of …
We prove that for every polynomial of one complex variable of degree at least 2 and Julia set not being totally disconnected nor a circle, nor interval, Hausdorff dimension of this Julia set is larger than 1. Till now this was known only in the connected Julia set case. We give also an example of a polynomial with non-connected but not totally disconnected Julia set and such that all its components comprising of more than single points are analytic arcs, thus resolving a question by Christopher Bishop, who asked whether every such component must have Hausdorff dimension larger than 1.
Given a continuous dynamical system $f:X\to X$ on a compact metric space $X$ and an $m$-dimensional continuous potential $Φ:X\to \mathbb R^m$, the (generalized) rotation set ${\rm Rot}(Φ)$ is defined as the set of all $μ$-integrals of $Φ$, where $μ$ runs over all invariant probability measures. Analogous to the classical topological entropy, one can associate the localized entropy ${\mathcal H}(w)$ to each $w\in {\rm Rot}(Φ)$. In this paper, we study the computability of rotation sets and localized entropy functions by deriving conditions that imply their computability. We then apply our resul…
