We develop a method of the ab-initio calculation for the core-level x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS). By calculating one-electron states in the presence of core-hole potential, excited states are constructed by distributing electrons on these one-electron states. The overlap integrals between the excited states and the ground state are evaluated by using the wavefunctions with and without the core-hole potential, and finally the XPS spectra are obtained. Implementing the procedure, we obtain the spin-resolved 3s-core XPS spectra in ferromagnetic iron without any adjustable parameters, in good agreement with the experiment. The spectral shapes are quite different for different spin channels. We explain the behavior in terms of the difference in the one-electron states screening the core-hole potential.
We calculate the $3s$- and $4s$-core-level x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) spectra in the ferromagnetic and nonmagnetic transition metals by developing an \emph{ab initio} method. We obtain the spectra exhibiting the characteristic shapes as a function of binding energy in good agreement with experimental observations. The spectral shapes are strikingly different between the majority spin channel and the minority spin channel for ferromagnetic metals Ni, Co, and Fe, that is, large intensities appear in the higher binding energy side of the main peak (satellite) in the majority spin chan…
Perovskite alkaline earth stannates, such as $BaSnO_3$ and $SrSnO_3$, showing light transparency and high electrical conductivity (when doped), have become promising candidates for novel optoelectrical devices. Such devices are mostly based on hetero-structures and understanding of their electronic structure, which usually deviates from the bulk, is mandatory for exploring a full application potential. Employing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and ab initio calculations we reveal the existence of a 2-dimensional metallic state at the $SnO_2$-terminated surface of a 1\% La-doped $BaSn…
We study the 2p-core level x-ray photoemission spectra in ferromagnetic transition metals, Fe, Co, and Ni using a recently developed ab initio method. The excited final states are set up by distributing electrons on the one-electron states calculated under the fully screened potential in the presence of the core hole. We evaluate the overlap between these excited states and the ground state by using one-electron wave functions, and obtain the spectral curves as a function of binding energy. The calculated spectra reproduce well the observed spectra displaying interesting dependence on the eleme…

Resonant photoemission spectroscopy has been used to investigate the character of Fe 3d states in FeAl alloy. Fe 3d states have two different character, first is of itinerant nature located very close to the Fermi level, and second, is of less itinerant (relatively localized character), located beyond 2 eV below the Fermi level. These distinct states are clearly distinguishable in the resonant photoemission data. Comparison between the results obtained from experiments and first principle based electronic structure calculation show that the origin of the itinerant character of the Fe 3d states…
We calculate the photoemission spectra of suspended and epitaxial doped graphene using an ab initio cumulant expansion of the Green's function based on the GW self-energy. Our results are compared to experiment and to standard GW calculations. For doped graphene on a silicon carbide substrate, we find, in contrast to earlier calculations, that the spectral function from GW only does not reproduce experimental satellite properties. However, ab initio GW plus cumulant theory combined with an accurate description of the substrate screening results in good agreement with experiment, but gives no p…
The accurate ab-initio simulation of periodic solids with strong correlations is one of the grand challenges of condensed matter. While mature methods exist for weakly correlated solids, the ab-initio description of strongly correlated systems is an active field of research. In this work, we show results for the single particle spectral function of the two correlated $d$-electron solids NiO and MnO from self-energy embedding theory. Unlike earlier work, the theory does not use any adjustable parameters and is fully ab-initio, while being able to treat both the strong correlation and the non-lo…
X-ray photoemission (XPS) and Near Edge X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy play an important role in investigating the structure and electronic structure of materials and surfaces. Ab-initio simulations provide crucial support for the interpretation of complex spectra containing overlapping signatures. Approximate core-hole simulation methods based on Density Functional Theory such as the Delta-Self-Consistent-Field ($Δ$SCF) method or the transition potential (TP) method are widely used to predict K-shell XPS and NEXAFS signatures of organic molecules, inorganic materials an…
X-ray photoemission and x-ray absorption spectroscopy are important techniques to characterize chemical bonding at surfaces and are often used to identify the strength and nature of adsorbate-substrate interactions. In this study, we judge the ability of x-ray spectroscopic techniques to identify different regimes of chemical bonding at metal-organic interfaces. To achieve this, we sample different interaction strength regimes in a comprehensive and systematic way by comparing two topological isomers, azulene and naphthalene, adsorbed on three metal substrates with varying reactivity, namely t…
In this work we provide an exhaustive study of the photemission spectrum of paramagnetic FeO under pressure using a refined version of our recently derived many-body effective energy theory (MEET). We show that, within a nonmagnetic description of the paramagnetic phase, the MEET gives an overall good description of the photoemission spectrum at ambient pressure as well as the changes it undergoes by increasing pressure. In particular at ambient pressure the band gap opens between the mixed Fe $t_{2g}$ and O $2p$ states and the Fe 4s states and, moreover, a $d$-$d$ gap opens, which is compatib…
This manuscript presents, to our knowledge, the first fully ab initio many-body photoemission framework to predict the transverse momentum distributions and the mean transverse energies (MTEs) of photoelectrons from single-crystal photocathodes. The need to develop such a theory stems from the lack of studies that provide complete understanding of the underlying fundamental processes governing the transverse momentum distribution of photoelectrons emitted from single crystals. For example, initial predictions based on density-functional theory calculations of effective electron masses suggeste…
We introduce a new method for simulating photoemission spectra from bulk crystals in the ultra-violet energy range, within a three-step model. Our method explicitly accounts for transmission and matrix-element effects, as calculated from state-of-the-art plane-wave pseudopotential techniques within density-functional theory. Transmission effects, in particular, are included by extending to the present problem a technique previously employed with success to deal with ballistic conductance in metal nanowires. The spectra calculated for normal emission in Cu(001) and Cu(111) are in fair agreement…
In the present work, we investigate the electronic structure of the two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnet Cr2Ge2Te6 by photoemission spectroscopy and ab initio calculations. Our results demonstrate the presence of multiple hole-type bands in the vicinity of the Fermi level indicating that the material can support high electrical conductivity by manipulating the chemical potential. Also, our photon energy dependent angle resolved photoemission experiment revealed that several of the hole bands exhibit weak dispersion with varied incident photon energy providing experimental signature for its two dim…
Linear and non-linear spectroscopies are powerful tools used to investigate the energetics and dynamics of electronic excited states of both molecules and crystals. While highly accurate \emph{ab initio} calculations of molecular spectra can be performed relatively routinely, extending these calculations to periodic systems is challenging. Here, we present calculations of the linear absorption spectrum and pump-probe two-photon photoemission spectra of the naphthalene crystal using equation-of-motion coupled-cluster theory with single and double excitations (EOM-CCSD). Molecular acene crystals…
Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is a powerful experimental technique for directly probing electron dynamics in solids. The energy vs. momentum dispersion relations and the associated spectral broadenings measured by ARPES provide a wealth of information on quantum many-body interaction effects. In particular, ARPES allows studies of the Coulomb interaction among electrons (electron-electron interactions) and the interaction between electrons and lattice vibrations (electron-phonon interactions). Here, we report ab initio simulations of the ARPES spectra of graphene including …
We introduce a new method for determining accurate values of the valence-band maximum in x-ray photoemission spectra. Specifically, we align the sharpest peak in the valence-band region of the experimental spectrum with the corresponding feature of a theoretical valence-band density of states curve from ab initio GW theory calculations. This method is particularly useful for soft and hard x-ray photoemission studies of materials with a mixture of valence-band characters, where strong matrix element effects can render standard methods for extracting the valence-band maximum unreliable. We apply…
The h_u hole spectral intensity for C60 -> C60+ molecular photoemission is calculated at finite temperature by a parameter-free Lanczos diagonalization of the electron-vibration Hamiltonian, including the full 8 H_g, 6 G_g, and 2 A_g mode couplings. The computed spectrum at 800 K is in striking agreement with gas-phase data. The energy separation of the first main shoulder from the main photoemission peak, 230 meV in C60, is shown to measure directly and rather generally the strength of the final-state Jahn-Teller coupling.
Investigating quasiparticle excitations of molecules on surfaces through photoemission spectroscopy forms a major part of nanotechnology research. Resolving spectral features at these interfaces requires a comprehensive theory of electron removal and addition processes in molecules and solids which captures the complex interplay of image charges, thermal effects and configurational disorder. We here develop such a theory and calculate the quasiparticle energy-level alignment and the valence photoemission spectrum for the prototype biomimetic solar cell interface between anatase TiO2 and the N3…
We present angle resolved photoemission spectra for Cu(100) and Cu(111) singly crystals in normal emission geometry, taken at tightly spaced intervals for photon energies between 8 eV and 150 eV. This systematic collection of spectra gives unprecedented insight into the influence of the final states to the photoemission process as well as the band structure and lifetimes of highly excited electrons in Cu.
On the basis of a semi-phenomenological model, it is argued that the high energy anomaly observed in recent photoemission experiments on cuprates is caused by interaction with an overdamped bosonic mode in the mid-infrared region of the spectrum. Analysis of optical conductivity allows to connect this excitation to the incoherent charge response reported for the majority of high Tc materials and some other perovskites. We show that its large damping is an essential feature responsible for the "waterfall" dispersion and linewidth of the spectral weight.
Recently discovered intrinsic antiferromagnetic topological insulator MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ presents an exciting platform for realization of the quantum anomalous Hall effect and a number of related phenomena at elevated temperatures. An important characteristic making this material attractive for applications is its predicted large magnetic gap at the Dirac point (DP). However, while the early experimental measurements reported on large DP gaps, a number of recent studies claimed to observe a gapless dispersion of the MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ Dirac cone. Here, using micro($μ$)-laser angle-resolved photoemissi…
Auger Photoelectron Coincidence Spectroscopy (APECS), in which the Auger spectra is measured in coincidence with the core level photoelectron, is capable of pulling difficult to observe low energy Auger peaks out of a large background due mostly to inelastically scattered valence band (VB) photoelectrons. However the APECS method alone cannot eliminate the background due to valence band photoemission processes in which the initial photon energy is shared by two or more electrons and one of the electrons is in the energy range of the core level photoemission peak. Here we describe an experiment…
When a three-dimensional material is constructed by stacking different two-dimensional layers into an ordered structure, new and unique physical properties can emerge. An example is the delafossite PdCoO2, which consists of alternating layers of metallic Pd and Mott-insulating CoO2 sheets. To understand the nature of the electronic coupling between the layers that gives rise to the unique properties of PdCoO2, we revealed its layer-resolved electronic structure combining standing-wave X-ray photoemission spectroscopy and ab initio many-body calculations. Experimentally, we have decomposed the …
Recent improvements to spatial resolution in angle-resolved photo-emission spectroscopy (ARPES) have made it common to perform measurements with a very brief dwell time, for the purpose of mapping the spectral function over large surface regions. However, rapid measurement modalities can suffer a grid-like intensity modulation due to a wire mesh that is typically placed in front of the ARPES detector to block stray electrons. Here, we explore Fourier-based methods that can effectively remove this artifact, and improve the quality of ARPES images obtained in rapid scanning modes. An open source…
We investigate the temperature evolution of the electronic structure of ferromagnetic CaB$_6$ using ultra-high resolution photoemission spectroscopy; electronic structure of paramagnetic LaB$_6$ is used as a reference. High resolution spectra of CaB$_6$ reveal finite density of states at the Fermi level, $ε_F$ at all the temperatures and evidence of impurity induced localized features in the vicinity of $ε_F$, which are absent in the spectra of LaB$_6$. Analysis of the high resolution spectra suggests that disorder in B-sublattice inducing partial localization in the mobile electrons and low e…
In a recent paper [Phys. Rev. Lett. 125, 043201 (2020)] (Ref.1) Liao et al. propose a theory of the interferometric photoemission delay based on the concepts of the photoelectron phase and photoelectron effective mass. The present comment discusses the applicability and limitations of the proposed approach based on an ab initio analysis supported by vast literature. Two central assumptions of the paper are questioned, namely that the photoelectron can be characterized by a phase (have a well-defined phase velocity), and that it can always be ascribed an effective mass Theories based on these c…
We have studied the electronic structure of the skutterudite compounds Co(Sb$_{1-x}$Te$_{x}$)$_3$ (x= 0, 0.02, 0.04) by photoemission spectroscopy. Valence-band spectra revealed that Sb 5p states are dominant near the Fermi level and are hybridized with Co 3d states just below it. The spectra of {\it p}-type CoSb$_3$ are well reproduced by the band-structure calculation, which suggests that the effect of electron correlations is not strong in CoSb$_3$. When Te is substituted for Sb and n-type carriers are doped into CoSb$_3$, the spectra are shifted to higher binding energies as predicted by t…
Multiferroic bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) thin films were prepared by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique. Electronic structures of the film have been studied by in situ photoemission spectroscopy (PES) and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). Both the Fe 2p PES and XAS spectra show that Fe ion is formally in +3 valence state. The Fe 2p and O K edge XAS spectra indicate that the oxygen octahedral crystal ligand field splits the unoccupied Fe 3d state to t2g and eg states. Valence band Fe 2p-3d resonant photoemission results indicate that hybridization between Fe 3d and O 2p plays important rol…
We present it ab-initio calculations of the non-resonant Raman spectra of zigzag and armchair BN nanotubes. In comparison, we implement a generalized bond-polarizability model where the parameters are extracted from first-principles calculations of the polarizability tensor of a BN sheet. For light-polarization along the tube-axis, the agreement between model and it ab-initio spectra is almost perfect. For perpendicular polarization, depolarization effects have to be included in the model in order to reproduce the it ab-initio Raman intensities.
Using synchrotron based photoemission, we have investigated the Mn-induced changes in Ga 3d core level spectra from as-grown ${\rm Ga}_{1-x}{\rm Mn}_{x}{\rm As}$. Although Mn is located in Ga substitutional sites, and does therefore not have any Ga nearest neighbours, the impact of Mn on the Ga core level spectra is pronounced even at Mn concentrations in the range of 0.5%. The analysis shows that each Mn atom affects a volume corresponding to a sphere with around 1.4 nm diameter.
We present results of an ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy study of artificially synthesized poly(dA)-poly(dT) DNA molecules on $p$-type Si substrates. For comparison, we also present the electronic density of states (DOS) calculated using an \emph{ab initio} tight-binding method based on density-functional theory (DFT). Good agreement was obtained between experiment and theory. The spectra of DNA networks on the Si substrate showed that the Fermi level of the substrate is located in the middle of the band gap of DNA. The spectra of thick ($\sim 70$ nm) DNA films showed a downward shift o…
The spectral properties of La$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$TiO$_{3}$, a doped Mott insulator with strong Coulomb correlations, are calculated with the ab initio computational scheme LDA+DMFT(QMC). It starts from the non-interacting electronic band structure as calculated by the local density approximation (LDA), and introduces the missing correlations by the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT), using numerically exact quantum Monte-Carlo (QMC) techniques to solve the resulting self-consistent multi-band single-impurity problem. The results of the LDA+DMFT(QMC) approach for the photoemission spectra of La$_{1…
The origin of a ubiquitous bosonic coupling feature in the photoemission spectra of high-Tc cuprates, an energy-momentum dispersion 'kink' observed at ~70 meV binding energy, remains a two-decade-old mystery. Understanding this phenomenon requires an accurate description of the coupling between the electron and some collective modes. We report here ab initio calculations based on GW perturbation theory and show that correlation-enhanced electron-phonon interaction in cuprates gives rise to the strong kinks, which not only explains quantitatively the observations but provides new understanding …
We study $1s$ and $2p$ hard x-ray photoemission spectra (XPS) in a series of late transition metal oxides: Fe$_2$O$_3$ (3$d^{5}$), FeTiO$_3$ (3$d^{6}$), CoO (3$d^{7}$) and NiO (3$d^{8}$). The experimental spectra are analyzed with two theoretical approaches: the MO$_6$ cluster model and the local density approximation (LDA) + dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). Owing to the absence of the core-valence multiplets and spin-orbit coupling, 1$s$ XPS is found to be a sensitive probe of chemical bonding and nonlocal charge-transfer screening, providing complementary information to 2$p$ XPS. The 1$s$…
By using laboratory x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HX-PES) at a synchrotron facility, we report an empirical semi-quantitative relationship between the valence/core-level x-ray photoemission spectral weight and electrical conductivity in La_{1-x}Sr_{x}MnO_{3} as a function of x. In the Mn 2p_{3/2} HX-PES spectra, we observed the shoulder structure due to the Mn^{3+} well-screened state. However, the intensity at x=0.8 was too small to explain its higher electrical conductivity than x=0.0, which confirms our recent analysis on the Mn 2p_{3/2} X…
We have measured soft x-ray photoemission and O 1{\it s} x-ray absorption spectra of Ca$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$RuO$_3$ thin films prepared {\it in situ}. The coherent and incoherent parts have been identified in the bulk component of the photoemission spectra, and spectral weight transfer from the coherent to the incoherent part has been observed with decreasing $x$, namely, with increasing orthorhombic distortion. We propose that, while the Ru 4d one-electron bandwidth does not change with $x$, the distortion and hence the splitting of the $t_{2\text{g}}$ band effectively increases electron correlation…
Angle-resolved photoemission spectra of a monolayer of Yb on W(110) reveal energy splittings and dispersion of the Yb 4f states that are obviously due to their hybridization with W-derived valence bands. These effects occur at well defined points of the surface Brillouin zone although a smearing over reciprocal space is expected from the structural incoherence of the Yb and W lattices. We conclude therefore that dispersion is not related to the periodic arrangement of the $4f$ states but reflects the k-dependent interaction of a single Yb 4f impurity with W bands.
The tiny Ag diffusion to MgCNi3 has been prepared by solid states reaction. Its structure was characterized by X-ray diffractometer (XRD). The results show that a small mount of Ag substitute for Ni sites, and much of Ag are in vacancy sites of the MgCNi3. We have further studied the surface properties of Ag-MgCNi3 using Raman scattering spectra, and X-ray photoemission spectra (XPS). Raman spectroscopy shows that the Ag-MgCNi3 has a special Raman peak around 842.1 cm-1 compared to that of C. The superconductor transition temperature (about 6.6 K) of Ag-MgCNi3 was lower than that of pure MgCNi…
X-ray photoemission spectra generally exhibit satellite features in addition to the quasi-particle peaks due to many-body excitations, which have been of considerable theoretical and experimental interest. However, the satellites attributed to charge-transfer (CT) excitations in correlated materials have proved difficult to calculate from first principles. Here we report a real-time, real-space approach for such calculations based on a cumulant representation of the core-hole Green's function and time-dependent density functional theory. This approach also yields an interpretation of CT satell…
A recent, major, puzzle in the core-level photoemission spectra of doped manganites is the observation of a 1-2 eV wide shoulder with intensity varying with temperature T as the square of the magnetization over a T scale of order 200K, an order of magnitude less than electronic energies. This is addressed and resolved here, by extending a recently proposed two electron fluid l-b model for these systems to include core-hole effects. The shoulder arises from a rapid redistribution of e_g electron density, as a function of T, between the highly localized (l) and band-like (b) states. Furthermore,…
We have studied the O 2p valence-band structure of Nb-doped SrTiO3, in which a dilute concentration of electrons are doped into the d0 band insulator, by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements. We found that ARPES spectra at the valence band maxima at the M [k = (pi/a, pi/a, 0)]and R [k = (pi/a, pi/a, pi/a)] points start from ~ 3.3 eV below the Fermi level (EF), consistent with the indirect band gap of 3.3 eV and the EF position at the bottom of the conduction band. The peak position of the ARPES spectra were, however, shifted toward higher binding energies by ~ 500 meV…
The correlated-band theory implemented as a combination of the local-density approximation with the dynamical mean-field theory is applied to PuO2. An insulating electronic structure, consistent with the experimental valence-band photoemission spectra, is obtained. The calculations yield a nonmagnetic ground state that is characterized by a noninteger filling of the plutonium 5f shell. The noninteger filling as well as the satellites appearing in the 4f core-level photoemission spectra originate in a sizable hybridization of the 5f shell with the 2p states of oxygen.
We have performed an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of La$_{0.6}$Sr$_{0.4}$FeO$_3$ using {\it in situ} prepared thin films and determined its band structure. The experimental band dispersions could be well explained by an empirical band structure assuming the G-type antiferromagnetic state. However, the Fe 3d bands were found to be shifted downward relative to the Fermi level ($E_F$) by $\sim 1$ eV compared with the calculation and to form a (pseudo)gap of $\sim 1$ eV at $E_F$. We attribute this observation to a strong localization effect of doped holes due to polaron formatio…
Using a combination of {\it ab initio} bandstructure methods and dynamical mean-field theory we study the single-particle spectrum of the prototypical charge-transfer insulator NiO. Good agreement with photoemission and inverse-photoemission spectra is obtained for both stoichiometric and hole-doped systems. In spite of a large Ni-$d$ spectral weight at the top of the valence band the doped holes are found to occupy mainly the ligand $p$ orbitals. Moreover, high hole doping leads to a significant reconstruction of the single-particle spectrum accompanied by a filling of the correlation gap.
Plasma discharge lamps are widely utilized in the practice of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments as narrow-linewidth ultraviolet photon sources. However, many emission lines such as Ar-I, Ne-I, and Ne-II have closely spaced doublet emission lines, which result in superimposed replica on the measured ARPES spectra. Here, we present a simple method for subtracting the contribution of these doublet emission lines from photoemission spectra. Benchmarking against ARPES spectra of well-characterized 2D materials, we demonstrate that this algorithm manages to subtract the d…
Coherent excitation of materials via ultrafast laser pulses can have interesting, observable dynamics in time-resolved photoemission measurements. The broad spectral width of ultrafast pump pulses can coherently excite multiple exciton energy levels. When such coherently excited states are probed by means of photoemission spectroscopy, interference between the polarization of different exciton levels can lead to observable coherent exciton beats. Here, we present the theoretical formalism for evaluating the Time- and Angle- Resolved Photoemission Spectra (tr-ARPES) arising from the coherently …
We present an efficient implementation of coupled-cluster Green's function (CCGF) method for simulating photoemission spectra of periodic systems. We formulate the periodic CCGF approach with Brillouin zone sampling in Gaussian basis at the coupled-cluster singles and doubles (CCSD) level. To enable CCGF calculations of realistic solids, we propose an active-space self-energy correction scheme by combining CCGF with cheaper many-body perturbation theory (GW) and implement the model order reduction (MOR) frequency interpolation technique. We find that the active-space self-energy correction and…
Ab initio wavefunction based methods are applied to the study of electron correlation effects on the band structure of oxide systems. We choose MgO as a prototype closed-shell ionic oxide. Our analysis is based on a local Hamiltonian approach and performed on finite fragments cut from the infinite solid. Localized Wannier functions and embedding potentials are obtained from prior periodic Hartree-Fock (HF) calculations. We investigate the role of various electron correlation effects in reducing the HF band gap and modifying the band widths. On-site and nearest-neighbor charge relaxation as wel…
