Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is a powerful experimental technique for directly probing electron dynamics in solids. The energy vs. momentum dispersion relations and the associated spectral broadenings measured by ARPES provide a wealth of information on quantum many-body interaction effects. In particular, ARPES allows studies of the Coulomb interaction among electrons (electron-electron interactions) and the interaction between electrons and lattice vibrations (electron-phonon interactions). Here, we report ab initio simulations of the ARPES spectra of graphene including both electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions on the same footing. Our calculations reproduce some of the key experimental observations related to many-body effects, including the indication of a mismatch between the upper and lower halves of the Dirac cone.
We study the formation of epitaxial graphene on Ru(0001) using fast x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy during the growth process. The assignment of different C 1s and Ru 3d core level components and their evolution during the growth process gives a detailed insight into the graphene formation and the strongly varying graphene-Ru interaction strength within the large moire unit cell. Subsequent intercalation of oxygen can be achieved at elevated temperature and the core level spectra show a conversion of the strongly corrugated to quasi free-standing graphene, characterised by a single narrow C 1…
Time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy accesses the ultrafast evolution of quasiparticles and many-body interactions in solid-state systems. However, the momentum- and energy-resolved transient photoemission intensity may not be unambiguously related to the intrinsic relaxation dynamics of photoexcited electrons. In fact, interpretation of the time-dependent photoemission signal can be affected by the transient evolution of both the one-electron removal spectral function as well as the photoemission dipole matrix elements. Here we investigate the topological insulator Bi$_{1.1}$Sb…
We combined a spin-resolved photoemission spectrometer with a high-harmonic generation (HHG) laser source in order to perform spin-, time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (STARPES) experiments on the transition metal dichalcogenide bulk WTe$_2$, a possible Weyl type-II semimetal. Measurements at different femtosecond pump-probe delays and comparison with spin-resolved one-step photoemission calculations provide insight into the spin polarization of electrons above the Fermi level in the region where Weyl points of WTe$_2$ are expected. We observe a spin accumulation above the Wey…
X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of graphene is important both for its characterization and as a model for other carbon materials. Despite great recent interest, the intrinsic photoemission of its single layer has not been unambiguously measured, nor is the layer-dependence in free-standing multilayers accurately determined. We combine scanning transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy with synchrotron-based scanning photoelectron microscopy to characterize the same areas of suspended graphene samples down to the atomic level. This allows us to assign spectral signals to regions …
Angle-resolved photoemission is a direct probe of the momentum-resolved electronic structure and proved influential in the study of bulk crystals with novel electronic properties. Thanks to recent technical advances, this technique can now be applied for the first time for the study of van der Waals heterostructures built by stacking two-dimensional crystals. In this article we will present the current state of the art in angle-resolved photoemission measurements on two-dimensional materials and review this still young field. We will focus in particular on devices similar to those used in tran…
In the present work, we investigate the electronic structure of the two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnet Cr2Ge2Te6 by photoemission spectroscopy and ab initio calculations. Our results demonstrate the presence of multiple hole-type bands in the vicinity of the Fermi level indicating that the material can support high electrical conductivity by manipulating the chemical potential. Also, our photon energy dependent angle resolved photoemission experiment revealed that several of the hole bands exhibit weak dispersion with varied incident photon energy providing experimental signature for its two dim…
Momentum-resolved electronic structure at a buried interface from soft x-ray standing-wave angle-resolved photoemission
研究了典型磁性隧道结La_(0.7)Sr_(0.3)MnO_3/SrTiO_3中的埋层界面。
Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), an experimental technique based on the photoelectric effect, is arguably the most powerful method for probing the electronic structure of solids. The past decade has witnessed notable progress in ARPES, including the rapid development of soft-X-ray ARPES, time-resolved ARPES, spin-resolved ARPES and spatially resolved ARPES, as well as considerable improvements in energy and momentum resolution. Consequently , ARPES has emerged as an indispensable experimental probe in the study of topological materials, which have characteristic non-trivial b…

The formation of large polarons has been proposed as reason for the high defect tolerance, low mobility, low charge carrier trapping and low nonradiative recombination rates of lead halide perovskites. Recently, direct evidence for large-polaron formation has been reported from a 50% effective mass enhancement in angle-resolved photoemission of CsPbBr3 over theory for the orthorhombic structure. We present in-depth band dispersion measurements of CsPbBr3 and GW calculations which lead to almost identical effective masses at the valence band maximum of 0.203+/-0.016 m0 in experiment and 0.226 m…
We report the electronic structure of CuTe with a high charge density wave (CDW) transition temperature Tc = 335 K by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). An anisotropic charge density wave gap with a maximum value of 190 meV is observed in the quasi-one-dimensional band formed by Te px orbitals. The CDW gap can be filled by increasing temperature or electron doping through in situ potassium deposition. Combining the experimental results with calculated electron scattering susceptibility and phonon dispersion, we suggest that both Fermi surface nesting and electron-phonon couplin…
We studied the electronic structure of PtPb$_{4}$ using laser angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy(ARPES) and density functional theory(DFT) calculations. This material is closely related to PtSn$_{4}$, which exhibits exotic topological properties such as Dirac node arcs. Fermi surface(FS) of PtPb$_{4}$ consists of two electron pockets at the center of the Brillouin zone(BZ) and several hole pockets around the zone boundaries. Our ARPES data reveals significant Rashba splitting at the $Γ$ point in agreement with DFT calculations. The presence of Rashba splitting may render this material o…
Two-dimensional (2D) materials with puckered layer morphology are promising candidates for next-generation opto-electronics devices owing to their anisotropic response to external perturbations and wide band gap tunability with the number of layers. Among them, PdSe2 is an emerging 2D transition-metal dichalcogenide with band gap ranging from 1.3 eV in the monolayer to a predicted semimetallic behavior in the bulk. Here we use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to explore the electronic band structure of PdSe2 with energy and momentum resolution. Our measurements reveal the semiconducti…
High resolution angle resolved photoemission measurements and band structure calculations are carried out to study the electronic structure of BaMnSb$_2$. All the observed bands are nearly linear that extend to a wide energy range. The measured Fermi surface mainly consists of one hole pocket around $Γ$ and a strong spot at Y which are formed from the crossing points of the linear bands. The measured electronic structure of BaMnSb$_2$ is unusual and deviates strongly from the band structure calculations. These results will stimulate further efforts to theoretically understand the electronic st…
Motivated by recent experimental progress we revisit the theory of pump-probe time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (trARPES), which is one of the most powerful techniques to trace transient pump-driven modifications of the electronic properties. The pump-induced dynamics can be described in different gauges for the light-matter interaction. Standard minimal coupling leads to the velocity gauge, defined by linear coupling to the vector potential. In the context of tight-binding (TB) models, the Peierls substitution is the commonly employed scheme for single-band models. Multi-orb…
Pumping graphene with circularly polarized light is the archetype of light-tailoring topological bands. Realizing the induced Floquet-Chern insulator state and tracing clear experimental manifestions has been a challenge, and it has become clear that scattering effects play a crucial role. We tackle this gap between theory and experiment by employing microscopic quantum kinetic calculations including realistic electron-electron and electron-phonon scattering. Our theory provides a direct link to the build-up of the Floquet-Chern insulator state in light-driven graphene and its detection in tim…
Time-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy of Quantum Materials Using High Harmonic Generation: Probing Electron-Phonon Interactions and Non-Equilibrium Dynamics
Coherent excitation of materials via ultrafast laser pulses can have interesting, observable dynamics in time-resolved photoemission measurements. The broad spectral width of ultrafast pump pulses can coherently excite multiple exciton energy levels. When such coherently excited states are probed by means of photoemission spectroscopy, interference between the polarization of different exciton levels can lead to observable coherent exciton beats. Here, we present the theoretical formalism for evaluating the Time- and Angle- Resolved Photoemission Spectra (tr-ARPES) arising from the coherently …
We discuss the potential creation and measurement of coherences in both dispersive solids and qubit-like single levels using current generation time- and angle-resolved photoemission technology. We show that in both cases, when both the pump and the probe overlap energetically with the coherent levels, and when the probe preferentially measures one level as compared to the other, that the time-resolved photoemission signal shows a beating pattern at the energy difference between the levels. In the case of dispersive bands, this leads to momentum-dependent oscillations, which may be used to map…
Time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy has played an important role in revealing the non-equilibrium electronic structures of solid-state materials. The implementation of high harmonic generation to obtain a higher photon energy also allows us to investigate the wide Brillouin zone on a time scale below 100 fs. In this article, we review our recent studies using high-harmonic-generation-laser-based time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to study a variety of quantum materials. We reveal many unprecedented phenomena in each system and highlight some representative resu…
Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is the most powerful technique to investigate the electronic band structure of crystalline solids. To completely characterize the electronic structure of topological materials, one needs to go beyond band structure mapping and access information about the momentum-resolved Bloch wavefunction, namely orbitals, Berry curvature, and topological invariants. However, because phase information is lost in the process of measuring photoemission intensities, retrieving the complex-valued Bloch wavefunction from photoemission data has yet remained elusiv…
