When a three-dimensional material is constructed by stacking different two-dimensional layers into an ordered structure, new and unique physical properties can emerge. An example is the delafossite PdCoO2, which consists of alternating layers of metallic Pd and Mott-insulating CoO2 sheets. To understand the nature of the electronic coupling between the layers that gives rise to the unique properties of PdCoO2, we revealed its layer-resolved electronic structure combining standing-wave X-ray photoemission spectroscopy and ab initio many-body calculations. Experimentally, we have decomposed the measured valence band spectrum into contributions from Pd and CoO2 layers. Computationally, we find that many-body interactions in Pd and CoO2 layers are highly different. Holes in the CoO2 layer interact strongly with charge-transfer excitons in the same layer, whereas holes in the Pd layer couple to plasmons in the Pd layer. Interestingly, we find that holes in states hybridized across both layers couple to both types of excitations (charge-transfer excitons or plasmons), with the intensity of photoemission satellites being proportional to the projection of the state onto a given layer. This establishes satellites as a sensitive probe for inter-layer hybridization. These findings pave the way towards a better understanding of complex many-electron interactions in layered quantum materials.
We report on a combined study of the de Haas-van Alphen effect and angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy on single crystals of the metallic delafossite PdRhO$_2$ rounded off by \textit{ab initio} band structure calculations. A high sensitivity torque magnetometry setup with SQUID readout and synchrotron-based photoemission with a light spot size of $~50\,μ\mathrm{m}$ enabled high resolution data to be obtained from samples as small as $150\times100\times20\,(μ\mathrm{m})^3$. The Fermi surface shape is nearly cylindrical with a rounded hexagonal cross section enclosing a Luttinger volume of…
X-ray standing wave (XSW) excited photoelectron emission was used to measure the site-specific valence band (VB) for 1/2 monolayer (ML) Pt grown on a SrTiO3 (001) surface. The XSW induced modulations in the core level (CL) and VB photoemission from the surface and substrate atoms were monitored for three hkl substrate Bragg reflections. The XSW CL analysis shows the Pt to have an fcc-like cube-on-cube epitaxy with the substrate. The XSW VB information compares well to a density functional theory calculated projected density of states from the surface and substrate atoms. Overall, this work rep…
Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is a powerful technique for the study of electronic structure, but it lacks a direct ability to study buried interfaces between two materials. We address this limitation by combining ARPES with soft x-ray standing-wave (SW) excitation (SWARPES), in which the SW profile is scanned through the depth of the sample. We have studied the buried interface in a prototypical magnetic tunnel junction La0.7Sr0.3MnO3/SrTiO3. Depth- and momentum-resolved maps of Mn 3d eg and t2g states from the central, bulk-like and interface-like regions of La0.7Sr0.3MnO3…
Free-standing nanoribbons of InAs quantum membranes (QMs) transferred onto a (Si/Mo) multilayer mirror substrate are characterized by hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HXPS), and by standing-wave HXPS (SW-HXPS). Information on the chemical composition and on the chemical states of the elements within the nanoribbons was obtained by HXPS and on the quantitative depth profiles by SW-HXPS. By comparing the experimental SW-HXPS rocking curves to x-ray optical calculations, the chemical depth profile of the InAs(QM) and its interfaces were quantitatively derived with angstrom precision. We det…
Control of structural couplings at the complex-oxide interfaces is a powerful platform for creating new ultrathin layers with electronic and magnetic properties unattainable in the bulk. However, with the capability to design and control the electronic structure of such buried layers and interfaces at a unit-cell level, a new challenge emerges to be able to probe these engineered emergent phenomena with depth-dependent atomic resolution as well as element- and orbital selectivity. Here, we utilize a combination of core-level and valence-band soft x-ray standing-wave photoemission spectroscopy,…
Hybrid multiferroics such as BiFeO$_3$ (BFO) and La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ (LSMO) heterostructures are highly interesting functional systems due to their complex electronic and magnetic properties. One of the key parameters influencing the emergent properties is the quality of interfaces, where varying interdiffusion lengths can give rise to different chemistry and distinctive electronic states. Here we report high-resolution depth resolved chemical and electronic investigation of BFO/LSMO superlattice using standing-wave hard X-ray photoemission spectroscopy in the first-order Bragg as well…

We report the detailed electronic structure of a hole-doped delafossite oxide CuCr_{1-x}Mg_{x}O_{2} (0 <= x <= 0.03) studied by photoemission spectroscopy (PES), soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and band-structure calculations within the local-density approximation +U (LDA+U) scheme. Cr/Cu 3p-3d resonant PES reveals that the near-Fermi-level leading structure has primarily the Cr 3d character with a minor contribution from the Cu 3d through Cu 3d-O 2p-Cr 3d hybridization, having good agreement with the band-structure calculations. This indicates that a doped hole will have primarily t…
Large scale, homogeneous quasi-free standing monolayer graphene is obtained on cubic silicon carbide, i.e. the 3C-SiC(111) surface, which represents an appealing and cost effective platform for graphene growth. The quasi-free monolayer is produced by intercalation of hydrogen under the interfacial, (6root3x6root3)R30-reconstructed carbon layer. After intercalation, angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) reveals sharp linear pi-bands. The decoupling of graphene from the substrate is identified by X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and low energy electron diffraction (LEED). Atomi…
LaCrO$_3$ (LCO) / SrTiO$_3$ (STO) heterojunctions are intriguing due to a polar discontinuity along (001), two distinct and controllable interface structures [(LaO)$^+$/(TiO$_2$)$^0$ and (SrO)$^0$/(CrO$_2$)$^-$], and interface-induced polarization. In this study, we have used soft- and hard x-ray standing-wave excited photoemission spectroscopy (SW-XPS) to generate a quantitative determination of the elemental depth profiles and interface properties, band alignments, and the depth distribution of the interface-induced built-in potentials in the two constituent oxides. We observe an alternating…
A major remaining challenge in the superconducting cuprates is the unambiguous differentiation of the composition and electronic structure of the CuO$_2$ layers and those of the intermediate layers. The large c axis for these materials permits employing soft x-ray (930.3 eV) standing wave (SW) excitation in photoemission that yields atomic layer-by-atomic layer depth resolution of these properties. Applying SW photoemission to Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ yields the depth distribution of atomic composition and the layer-resolved densities of states. We detect significant Ca presence in the Sr…
Free-standing exfoliated monolayer graphene is an ultra-thin flexible membrane, which exhibits out of plane deformation or corrugation. In this paper, a technique is described to measure the band structure of such free-standing graphene by angle-resolved photoemission. Our results show that photoelectron coherence is limited by the crystal corrugation. However, by combining surface morphology measurements of the graphene roughness with angle-resolved photoemission, energy dependent quasiparticle lifetime and bandstructure measurements can be extracted. Our measurements rely on our development …
The Fe/MgO magnetic tunnel junction is a classic spintronic system, with current importance technologically, and interest for future innovation. The key magnetic properties are linked directly to the structure of hard-to-access buried interfaces, and the Fe and MgO components near the surface are unstable when exposed to air, making a deeper probing, non-destructive, in-situ measurement ideal for this system. We have thus applied hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HXPS) and standing-wave (SW) HXPS in the few keV energy range to probe the structure of an epitaxially-grown MgO/Fe superlattic…
Our recently reported spin and angular resolved photoemission (SARPES) results on an epitaxial graphene monolayer on SiC(0001) suggested the presence of a large Rashba-type spin splitting of Δk=(0.030+-0.005)1/A [1]. Although this value was orders of magnitude larger than predicted theoretically, it could be reconciled with the line width found in conventional spin-integrated high resolution angular resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) data. Here we present novel measurements for a hydrogen intercalated quasi free-standing graphene monolayer on SiC(0001) that reveal a spin polarization …
X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of graphene is important both for its characterization and as a model for other carbon materials. Despite great recent interest, the intrinsic photoemission of its single layer has not been unambiguously measured, nor is the layer-dependence in free-standing multilayers accurately determined. We combine scanning transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy with synchrotron-based scanning photoelectron microscopy to characterize the same areas of suspended graphene samples down to the atomic level. This allows us to assign spectral signals to regions …
We study the electronic structure of the Pd-terminated surface of the non-magnetic delafossite oxide metal PdCoO$_2$. Combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and density-functional theory, we show how an electronic reconstruction driven by surface polarity mediates a Stoner-like magnetic instability towards itinerant surface ferromagnetism. Our results reveal how this leads to a rich multi-band surface electronic structure, and provide spectroscopic evidence for an intriguing sample-dependent coupling of the surface electrons to a bosonic mode which we attribute to electron-magnon …
We report on a comparative structural characterization of two types of high quality epitaxial graphene layers grown by CVD on 4H-SiC(0001). The layers under study are a single layer graphene on top of a buffer layer and a quasi-free-standing graphene obtained by intercalation of hydrogen underneath the buffer layer. We determine the morphology and structure of both layers by different complementary in-situ and ex-situ surface techniques. We found the existence of large islands in both samples but with different size distribution. Photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) measurements were perfo…
Photoemission studies of graphene have resulted in a long-standing controversy concerning the strength of the experimental electron-phonon interaction in comparison with theoretical calculations. Using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy we study graphene grown on a copper substrate, where the metallic screening of the substrate substantially reduces the electron-electron interaction, simplifying the comparison of the electron-phonon interaction between theory and experiment. By taking the nonlinear bare bandstructure into account, we are able to show that the strength of…
The electron band structure of manganese-adsorbed graphene on an SiC(0001) substrate has been studied using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Upon introducing manganese atoms, the conduction band of graphene completely disappears and the valence band maximum is observed at 0.4 eV below Fermi energy. At the same time, the slope of the valence band decreases, approaching the electron band structure calculated using the local density approximation method. While the former provides experimental evidence of the formation of nearly free-standing graphene on an SiC substrate, concomitant wit…
Atomic scale engineering of two-dimensional materials could create devices with rich physical and chemical properties. External periodic potentials can enable the manipulation of the electronic band structures of materials. A prototypical system is 3x3-silicene/Ag(111), which has substrate-induced periodic modulations. Recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements revealed six Dirac cone pairs at the Brillouin zone boundary of Ag(111), but their origin remains unclear [Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 113, 14656 (2016)]. We used linear dichroism angle-resolved photoemission spectrosc…
X-ray standing-wave photoemission experiments involving multilayered samples are emerging as unique probes of the buried interfaces that are ubiquitous in current device and materials research. Such data require for their analysis a structure optimization process comparing experiment to theory that is not straightforward. In this work, we present a new computer program for optimizing the analysis of standing-wave data, called SWOPT, that automates this trial-and-error optimization process. The program includes an algorithm that has been developed for computationally expensive problems: so-call…
Ti2O3 exhibits a unique metal-insulator transition (MIT) at approximately 450 K over a wide temperature range of ~ 150 K. This broad MIT accompanied by lattice deformation differs from the sharp MITs observed in most other transition-metal oxides. A long-standing issue is determining the role of electron-electron correlation in the electronic structure and MIT of Ti2O3. However, the lack of information about the band structure of Ti2O3 has hindered investigating the origin of its unusual physical properties. Here, we report the electronic band structure of insulating Ti2O3 films with slight ho…
In this work, we studied the bulk band structure of a topological insulator (TI) Bi2Se3 and determined the contributions of the Bi and Se orbital states to the valence bands using standing wave-excited hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (SW-HAXPES). This SW technique can provide the element-resolved information and extract individual Bi and Se contributions to the Bi2Se3 valence band. Comparisons with density functional theory (DFT) calculations (LDA and GW) reveal that the Bi 6s, Bi 6p, and Se 4p states are dominant in the Bi2Se3 HAXPES valence band. These findings pave a way for studying …
Quasiparticle interference induced by cobalt adatoms on the surface of the topological insulator Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ is studied by scanning tunneling microscopy, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism. It is found that Co atoms are selectively adsorbed on top of Se sites and act as strong scatterers at the surface, generating anisotropic standing waves. A long-range magnetic order is found to be absent, and the surface state Dirac cone remains gapless. The anisotropy of the standing wave is ascribed to the heavily warped iso-energy contour of unoccupied st…
The Landau-Fermi liquid picture for quasiparticles assumes that charge carriers are dressed by many-body interactions, forming one of the fundamental theories of solids. Whether this picture still holds for a semimetal like graphene at the neutrality point, i.e., when the chemical potential coincides with the Dirac point energy, is one of the long-standing puzzles in this field. Here we present such a study in quasi-freestanding graphene by using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We see the electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions go through substantial chang…
The interfaces between two condensed phases often exhibit emergent physical properties that can lead to new physics and novel device applications, and are the subject of intense study in many disciplines. We here apply novel experimental and theoretical techniques to the characterization of one such interesting interface system: the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) formed in multilayers consisting of SrTiO$_3$ (STO) and GdTiO$_3$ (GTO). This system has been the subject of multiple studies recently and shown to exhibit very high carrier charge densities and ferromagnetic effects, among other…
The dilute magnetic semiconductors have promise in spin-based electronics applications due to their potential for ferromagnetic order at room temperature, and various unique switching and spin-dependent conductivity properties. However, the precise mechanism by which the transition-metal doping produces ferromagnetism has been controversial. Here we have studied a dilute magnetic semiconductor (5% manganese-doped gallium arsenide) with Bragg-reflection standing-wave hard X-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, and resolved its electronic structure into element- and momentum- resolved …
The electron-phonon coupling strength in the spin-split valence band maximum of single-layer MoS$_2$ is studied using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and density functional theory-based calculations. Values of the electron-phonon coupling parameter $λ$ are obtained by measuring the linewidth of the spin-split bands as a function of temperature and fitting the data points using a Debye model. The experimental values of $λ$ for the upper and lower spin-split bands at K are found to be 0.05 and 0.32, respectively, in excellent agreement with the calculated values for a free-standing sin…
Technological advancements are strongly required to fulfill the demands of new accelerator devices with the highest accelerating gradients and operation reliability for the future colliders. To this purpose an extensive R&D regarding molybdenum coatings on copper is in progress. In this contribution we describe chemical composition, deposition quality and resistivity properties of different molybdenum coatings obtained via sputtering. The deposited films are thick metallic disorder layers with different resistivity values above and below the molibdenum dioxide reference value. Chemical and ele…
The absence of inversion symmetry leads to a strong spin-orbit splitting of the upper valence band of semiconducting single layer transition metal dichalchogenides such as MoS$_2$ or WS$_2$. This permits a direct comparison of the electron-phonon coupling strength in states that only differ by their spin. Here, the electron-phonon coupling in the valence band maximum of single-layer WS$_2$ is studied by first principles calculations and angle-resolved photoemission. The coupling strength is found to be drastically different for the two spin-split branches, with calculated values of $λ_K=$0.002…
Single-layer FeSe films with extremely expanded in-plane lattice constant of 3.99A are fabricated by epitaxially growing FeSe/Nb:SrTiO3/KTaO3 heterostructures, and studied by in situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Two elliptical electron pockets at the Brillion zone corner are resolved with negligible hybridization between them, indicating the symmetry of the low energy electronic structure remains intact as a free-standing single-layer FeSe, although it is on a substrate. The superconducting gap closes at a record high temperature of 70K for the iron based superconductors. Intrigu…
Large-area single-layer WS$_2$ is grown epitaxially on Au(111) using evaporation of W atoms in a low pressure H$_2$S atmosphere. It is characterized by means of scanning tunneling microscopy, low-energy electron diffraction and core-level spectroscopy. Its electronic band structure is determined by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The valence band maximum at $\bar{K}$ is found to be significantly higher than at $\barΓ$. The observed dispersion around $\bar{K}$ is in good agreement with density functional theory calculations for a free-standing monolayer, whereas the bands at $\barΓ$ …

The discovery of a two-dimensional electron system (2DES) at the interfaces of perovskite oxides such as LaAlO3 and SrTiO3 has motivated enormous efforts in engineering interfacial functionalities with this type of oxide heterostructures. However, its fundamental origins are still not understood, e.g. the microscopic mechanisms of coexisting interface conductivity and magnetism. Here we report a comprehensive spectroscopic investigation of the depth profile of 2DES-relevant Ti 3d interface carriers using depth- and element-specific techniques, standing-wave excited photoemission and resonant i…
