The existence of an Almeida-Thouless (AT) instability surface below the upper critical dimension 6 is demonstrated in the generic replica symmetric field theory. Renormalization flows from around the zero-field fixed point are investigated. By introducing the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the bare parameters, the fate of the AT line can be followed from mean field (infinite dimensions) down to d<6.
This work contains a review of the theoretical understanding for the Almeida-Thouless transition. The effective field theoretic model for this transition to the replica symmetry broken phase is extended to low temperatures, making it possible to compute perturbative corrections to the mean field phase boundary even close to zero temperature. Nonperturbative behavior emerges both around the zero-external-field transition and at low temperature. Renormalization group results are also discussed.
Vector spin glasses are known to show two different kinds of phase transitions in presence of an external field: the so-called de Almeida-Thouless and Gabay-Toulouse lines. While the former has been studied to some extent on several topologies (fully connected, random graphs, finite-dimensional lattices, chains with long-range interactions), the latter has been studied only in fully connected models, which however are known to show some unphysical behaviors (e.g. the divergence of these critical lines in the zero-temperature limit). Here we compute analytically both these critical lines for XY…
The de Almeida-Thouless (AT) line in Ising spin glasses is the phase boundary in the temperature $T$ and magnetic field $h$ plane below which replica symmetry is broken. Using perturbative renormalization group (RG) methods, we show that when the dimension $d$ of space is just above $6$ there is a multicritical point (MCP) on the AT line, which separates a low-field regime, in which the critical exponents have mean-field values, from a high-field regime where the RG flows run away to infinite coupling strength; as $d$ approaches $6$ from above, the location of the MCP approaches the zero-field…
We study the phase transition of the free energy in the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick mean-field spin glass model with centered Gaussian external field. We show that the corresponding Almeida-Thouless line is the correct transition curve that distinguishes between the replica symmetric and replica symmetry breaking solutions in the Parisi formula.
A replica-symmetry-breaking phase transition is predicted in a host of disordered media. The criticality of the transition has, however, long been questioned below its upper critical dimension, six, due to the absence of a critical fixed point in the renormalization-group flows at one-loop order. A recent two-loop analysis revealed a possible strong-coupling fixed point but, given the uncontrolled nature of perturbative analysis in the strong-coupling regime, debate persists. Here we examine the nature of the transition as a function of spatial dimension and show that the strong-coupling fixed…
We use high temperature series expansions to study the $\pm J$ Ising spin-glass in a magnetic field in $d$-dimensional hypercubic lattices for $d=5, 6, 7$ and $8$, and in the infinite-range Sherrington-Kirkpatrick (SK) model. The expansions are obtained in the variable $w=\tanh^2{J/T}$ for arbitrary values of $u=\tanh^2{h/T}$ complete to order $w^{10}$. We find that the scaling dimension $Δ$ associated with the ordering-field $h^2$ equals $2$ in the SK model and for $d\ge 6$. However, in agreement with the work of Fisher and Sompolinsky, there is a violation of scaling in a finite field, leadi…
We determine explicitly and discuss in detail the effects of the joint presence of a longitudinal and a transversal (random) magnetic field on the phases of the Random Energy Model (REM) and its hierarchical generalization, the GREM. Our results extent known results both in the classical case of vanishing transversal field and in the quantum case for vanishing longitudinal field. Following Derrida and Gardner, we argue that the longitudinal field has to be implemented hierarchically also in the Quantum GREM. We show that this ensures the shrinking of the spin glass phase in the presence of the…
The de Almeida-Thouless (AT) line is the phase boundary in the temperature--magnetic field plane of an Ising spin glass at which a continuous (i.e. second-order) transition from a paramagnet to a replica-symmetry-breaking (RSB) phase occurs, according to mean-field theory. Here, using field-theoretic perturbative renormalization group methods on the Bray-Roberts reduced Landau-Ginzburg-type theory for a short-range Ising spin glass in space of dimension $d$, we show that at nonzero magnetic field the nature of the corresponding transition is modified as follows: a) for $d-6$ small and positive…

We study in Ising spin glasses the finite-size effects near the spin-glass transition in zero field and at the de Almeida-Thouless transition in a field by Monte Carlo methods and by analytical approximations. In zero field, the finite-size scaling function associated with the spin-glass susceptibility of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick mean-field spin-glass model is of the same form as that of one-dimensional spin-glass models with power-law long-range interactions in the regime where they can be a proxy for the Edwards-Anderson short-range spin-glass model above the upper critical dimension. We …
Spin glasses in a field: Three and four dimensions as seen from one space dimension
Rev. Lett.
The asymptotical behavior of physical quantities, like the order parameter, the replicon and longitudinal masses, is studied around the zero-field spin glass transition point when a small external magnetic field is applied. An effective field theory to model this asymptotics contains a small perturbation in its Lagrangian which breaks the zero-field symmetry. A first order renormalization group supplemented by perturbational results provides the scaling functions. The perturbative zero of the scaling function for the replicon mass defines a generic Almeida-Thouless surface stemming from the ze…
In his Comment, Temesvári objects to a remark in our paper [Phys.\ Rev.\ B {\bf 91}, 104432 (2015)] that his result for the form of the Almeida-Thouless (AT) line obtained in an earlier paper with Parisi [Nucl.\ Phys.\ B {\bf 858}, 293 (2012)] in six dimensions can be obtained by taking the limit of $d \to 6$ in the equations valid for $d>6$, but that this violated one of the inequalities needed for their validity. He is just pointing out that they gave a derivation of the form of the AT line in six dimensions in [Nucl.\ Phys.\ B {\bf 858}, 293 (2012)] which avoided this difficulty. However, i…
The Gardner transition is the transition that at mean-field level separates a stable glass phase from a marginally stable phase. This transition has similarities with the de Almeida-Thouless transition of spin glasses. We have studied a well-understood problem, that of disks moving in a narrow channel, which shows many features usually associated with the Gardner transition. However, we can show that some of these features are artifacts that arise when a disk escapes its local cage during the quench to higher densities. There is evidence that the Gardner transition becomes an avoided transitio…
The transformation of the free-energy landscape from smooth to hierarchical is one of the richest features of mean-field disordered systems. A well-studied example is the de Almeida-Thouless transition for spin glasses in a magnetic field, and a similar phenomenon--the Gardner transition--has recently been predicted for structural glasses. The existence of these replica-symmetry-breaking phase transitions has, however, long been questioned below their upper critical dimension, d_u=6. Here, we obtain evidence for the existence of these transitions in d<d_u using a two-loop calculation. Because …
We discuss a phase transition in spin glass models which have been rarely considered in the past, namely the phase transition that may take place when two real replicas are forced to be at a larger distance (i.e. at a smaller overlap) than the typical one. In the first part of the work, by solving analytically the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model in a field close to its critical point, we show that even in a paramagnetic phase the forcing of two real replicas to an overlap small enough leads the model to a phase transition where the symmetry between replicas is spontaneously broken. More importan…
