Maps between Riemannian manifolds which are submersions on a dense subset, are studied by means of the eigenvalues of the pull-back of the target metrics, the first fundamental form. Expressions for the derivatives of these eigenvalues yield characterizations of harmonicity, totally geodesic maps and biconformal changes of metric preserving harmonicity. A Schwarz lemma for pseudo harmonic morphisms is proved, using the dilatation of the eigenvalues and, in dimension five, a Bochner technique method, involving the Laplacian of the difference of the eigenvalues, gives conditions forcing pseudo harmonic morphisms to be harmonic morphisms.
Characterizations for Riemannian submersions to be harmonic or biharmonic are shown. Examples of biharmonic but not harmonic Riemannian submersions are shown.
In this paper, we study harmonic Riemannian submersions from 3-dimensional geometries using the ( generalized) integrability data associated to an orthonormal frame natural to a Riemannian submersion. We give complete classifications of harmonic Riemannian submersions from Thurston's 3-dimensional geometries, 3-dimensional BCV spaces and Berger sphere into a surface. We also give some explicit constructions of these harmonic Riemannian submersions.
We find out upper bounds for the first eigenvalue of the stability operator for compact constant mean curvature orientable surfaces immersed in a Riemannian Killing submersion. As a consequence, the strong stability of such surfaces is studied. We also characterize constant mean curvature Hopf tori as the only ones attaining the bound in certain cases.
J. Eells and L. Lemaire introduced k-harmonic maps, and Wang Shaobo showed the first variational formula. When, k=2, it is called biharmonic maps (2-harmonic maps). There have been extensive studies in the area. In this paper, We study k-harmonic immersion into a sphere, and get the rerationship between radious and "k" of k-harmonic. And we also consider k-harmonic submersion, and genelarize Oniciuc's results. Futhermore we construct non harmonic k-harmonic by Hopf map.
In this paper, we give a complete classification of harmonic and biharmonic Riemannian submersions $π:(R^3,g_{Sol})\to (N^2,h)$ from Sol space into a surface by proving that there is neither harmonic nor biharmonic Riemannian submersion $π:(R^3,g_{Sol})\to (N^2,h)$ from Sol space no matter what the base space $(N^2,h)$ is. We also prove that a Riemannian submersion $π:(R,g_{Sol})\to (N^2,h)$ from Sol space exists only when the base space is a hyperbolic space form.
We study harmonic almost contact structures in the context of contact metric manifolds, and an analysis is carried out when such a manifold fibres over an almost Hermitian manifold, as exemplified by the Boothby-Wang fibration. Two types of almost contact metric warped products are also studied, relating their harmonicity to that of the almost Hermitian structure on the base or fibre.
We study bifurcation for the constant scalar curvature equation along a one-parameter family of Riemannian metrics on the total space of a harmonic Riemannian submersion. We provide an existence theorem for bifurcation points and a criterion to see that the conformal factors corresponding to the bifurcated metrics must be indeed constant along the fibers. In the case of the canonical variation of a Riemannian submersion with totally geodesic fibers, we characterize discreteness of the set of all degeneracy points along the family and give a sufficient condition to guarantee that bifurcation ne…
By studying cohomology classes that are related with $p$-harmonic morphisms, $F$-harmonic maps, and $f$-harmonic maps, we extend several of our previous results on Riemannian submersions and $p$-harmonic morphisms to $F$-harmonic maps, and $f$-harmonic maps which are submersions.
Given a Riemannian submersion, we study the relation between lambda constants introduced by G.Perelman on the base manifold and the total space of a Riemannian submersion. We also discuss the relationship between the first eigenvalues of Laplacians on the base manifold and that of the total space. The quantities on warped products are discussed in detail.
We introduce slant submersions from almost Hermitian manifolds onto Riemannian manifolds. We give examples, investigate the geometry of foliations which are arisen from the definition of a Riemannian submersion and check the harmonicity of such submersions. We also find necessary and sufficient conditions for a slant submersion to be totally geodesic. Moreover, we obtain a decomposition theorem for the total manifold of such submersions.
As a generalization of semi-invariant submersions, we introduce conformal semi-invariant submersions from almost Hermitian manifolds onto Riemannian manifolds. We give examples, investigate the geometry of foliations which are arisen from the definition of a conformal submersion and show that there are certain product structures on the total space of a conformal semi-invariant submersion. Moreover, we also check the harmonicity of such submersions and find necessary and sufficient conditions of a conformal semi-invariant submersion to be totally geodesic.
As a generalization of anti-invariant Riemannian submersions and Lagrangian Riemannian submersions, we introduce the notions of h-anti-invariant submersions and h-Lagrangian submersions from almost quaternionic Hermitian manifolds onto Riemannian manifolds. We obtain characterizations and investigate some properties: the integrability of distributions, the geometry of foliations, and the harmonicity of such maps. We also find a condition for such maps to be totally geodesic and give some examples of such maps. Finally, we obtain some types of decomposition theorems.
Akyol, M. A and Şahin, B. [Conformal semi-invariant submersions, Commun. Contemp. Math. 19, 1650011 (2017).] introduced the notion of conformal semi-invariant submersions from almost Hermitian manifolds. The present paper deal with the study of conformal generic submersions from almost Hermitian manifolds which extends semi-invariant submersions, generic Riemannian submersions and conformal semi-invariant submersions a natural way. We mention some examples of such maps and obtain characterizations and investigate some properties, including the integrability of distributions, the geometry of fo…
We introduce conformal anti-invariant submersions from almost Hermitian manifolds onto Riemannian manifolds. We give examples, investigate the geometry of foliations which are arisen from the definition of a conformal submersion and find necessary and sufficient conditions for a conformal anti-invariant submersion to be totally geodesic. We also check the harmonicity of such submersions and show that the total space has certain product structures. Moreover, we obtain curvature relations between the base space and the total space, and find geometric implications of these relations.
Harmonic morphisms are maps between Riemannian manifolds that pull back harmonic functions to harmonic functions. These maps are characterized as horizontally weakly conformal harmonic maps and they have many interesting links and applications to several areas in mathematics (see the book by Baird and Wood for details). In this paper, we study generalized harmonic morphisms which are defined to be maps between Riemannian manifolds that pull back harmonic functions to biharmonic functions. We obtain some characterizations of generalized harmonic morphisms into a Euclidean space and give two met…
An important theorem about biharmonic submanifolds proved independently by Chen-Ishikawa [CI] and Jiang [Ji] states that an isometric immersion of a surface into 3-dimensional Euclidean space is biharmonic if and only if it is harmonic (i.e, minimal). In a later paper [CMO2], Cadeo-Monttaldo-Oniciuc shown that the theorem remains true if the target Euclidean space is replaced by a 3-dimensional hyperbolic space form. In this paper, we prove the dual results for Riemannian submersions, i.e., a Riemannian submersion from a 3-dimensional space form of non-positive curvature into a surface is biha…
We prove that any (real or complex) analytic horizontally conformal submersion from a three-dimensional conformal manifold M to a two-dimensional conformal manifold N can be, locally, `extended' to a unique harmonic morphism from the heaven space of M to N.
As a generalization of slant submersions (Sahin, 2011), semi-slant submersions (Park and Prasad), and slant Riemannian maps (Sahin), we define the notion of semi-slant Riemannian maps from almost Hermitian manifolds to Riemannian manifolds. We study the integrability of distributions, the geometry of fibers, the harmonicity of such maps, etc. We also find a condition for such maps to be totally geodesic and investigate some decomposition theorems. Moreover, we give examples.
The variational theory of higher-power energy is developed for mappings between Riemannian manifolds, and more generally sections of submersions of Riemannian manifolds, and applied to sections of Riemannian vector bundles and their sphere subbundles. A complete classification is then given for left-invariant vector fields on 3-dimensional unimodular Lie groups equipped with an arbitrary left-invariant Riemannian metric.
We present a new optimal systolic inequality for a closed Riemannian manifold X, which generalizes a number of earlier inequalities, including that of C. Loewner. We characterize the boundary case of equality in terms of the geometry of the Abel-Jacobi map, A_X, of X. For an extremal metric, the map A_X turns out to be a Riemannian submersion with minimal fibers, onto a flat torus. We characterize the base of J_X in terms of an extremal problem for Euclidean lattices, studied by A.-M. Bergé and J. Martinet. Given a closed manifold X that admits a submersion F to its Jacobi torus T^{b_1(X)}, we…
Relating the Dirac operators on the total space and on the base manifold of a horizontally conformal submersion, we characterize Dirac morphisms, i.e. maps which pull back (local) harmonic spinor fields onto (local) harmonic spinor fields.
We deform a map into a Riemannian manifold that is horizontal with respect to a submersion onto a non-positively curved manifold and satisfies a Chow condition into a harmonic one through a horizontal homotopy.
As a generalization of slant Riemannian maps (Sahin), semi-slant Riemannian maps (Park), almost h-slant submersions (Park 2012), and almost h-semi-slant submersions (Park 2011), we introduce the notion of almost h-semi-slant Riemannian maps from almost quaternionic Hermitian manifolds to Riemannian manifolds. We investigate the integrability of distributions, the harmonicity of such maps, the geometry of fibers, etc. We also deal with the condition for such maps to be totally geodesic and study some decomposition theorems. Moreover, we give some examples.
We introduce holomorphic Riemannian maps between almost Hermitian manifolds as a generalization of holomorphic submanifolds and holomorphic submersions, give examples and obtain a geometric characterization of harmonic holomorphic Riemannian maps from almost Hermitian manifolds to Kaehler manifolds.
We describe the relationship between complex-valued harmonic morphisms from Minkowski 4-space} and the shear-free ray congruences of mathematical physics. Then we show how a horizontally conformal submersion on a domain of Euclidean 3-space gives the boundary values at infinity of a complex-valued harmonic morphism on hyperbolic 4-space.
Weyl derivatives, Weyl-Lie derivatives and conformal submersions are defined, then used to generalize the Jones-Tod correspondence between selfdual 4-manifolds with symmetry and Einstein-Weyl 3-manifolds with an abelian monopole. In this generalization, the conformal symmetry is replaced by a particular kind of conformal submersion with one dimensional fibres. Special cases are studied in which the conformal submersion is holomorphic, affine, or projective. All scalar-flat Kahler metrics with such a holomorphic conformal submersion, and all four dimensional hypercomplex structures with a compa…
As a generalization of holomorphic submersions, anti-invariant submersions and slant submersions, we introduce slant Riemannian maps from almost Hermitian manifolds to Riemannian manifolds. We give examples, obtain the existence conditions of slant Riemannian maps and investigate harmonicity of such maps. We also obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for slant Riemannian maps to be totally geodesic and give a decomposition theorem for the total manifold.
We study biharmonic maps between Riemannian manifolds with finite energy and finite bi-energy. We show that if the domain is complete and the target of non-positive curvature, then such a map is harmonic. We then give applications to isometric immersions and horizontally conformal submersions.
This note reviews some of the recent work on biharmonic conformal maps (see \cite{OC}, Chapter 11, for a detailed survey). It will be focused on biharmonic conformal immersions and biharmonic conformal maps between manifolds of the same dimension and their links to isoparametric functions and Yamabe type equations, though biharmonic morphisms (maps that preserve solutions of bi-Laplace equations), generalized harmonic morphisms (maps that pull back germs of harmonic functions to germs of biharmonic functions), and biharmonic conformal and Riemannian submersions will also be touched.
Inspired by the all-important conformal invariance of harmonic maps on two-dimensional domains, this article studies the relationship between biharmonicity and conformality. We first give a characterization of biharmonic morphisms, analogues of harmonic morphisms investigated by Fuglede and Ishihara, which, in particular, explicits the conditions required for a conformal map in dimension four to preserve biharmonicity and helps producing the first example of a biharmonic morphism which is not a special type of harmonic morphism. Then, we compute the bitension field of horizontally weakly confo…
In this paper, the author discusses the eigenvalues and entropies under the harmonic-Ricci flow, which is the Ricci flow coupled with the harmonic map flow. We give an alternative proof of results for compact steady and expanding harmonic-Ricci breathers. In the second part, we derive some monotonicity formulas for eigenvalues of Laplacian under the harmonic-Ricci flow. Finally, we obtain the first variation of the shrinker and expanding entropies of the harmonic-Ricci flow.
In this article, we prove an isoperimetric inequality for the harmonic mean of the first $(n-1)$ nonzero Steklov eigenvalues on bounded domains in $n$-dimensional Hyperbolic space. Our approach to prove this result also gives a similar inequality for the first $n$ nonzero Steklov eigenvalues on bounded domains in $n$-dimensional Euclidean space.
In this paper, we study monotonicity for the first eigenvalue of a class of $(p,q)$-Laplacian. We find the first variation formula for the first eigenvalue of $(p,q)$-Laplacian on a closed Riemannian manifold evolving by the Ricci-harmonic flow and construct various monotic quantities by imposing some conditions on initial manifold.
In this paper, we study eigenvalues of the poly-Laplacian with arbitrary order on a bounded domain in an n-dimensional Euclidean space and obtain a lower bound for eigenvalues, which generalizes the results due to Cheng-Wei [5] and gives an improvement of results due to Cheng- Qi-Wei [3].
In this note, an isoperimetric inequality for the harmonic mean of lower order Steklov eigenvalues is proved on bounded domains in noncompact rank-$1$ symmetric spaces. This work extends result of \cite{BR.01} and \cite{V.21} proved for bounded domains in Euclidean space and Hyperbolic space, respectively.
Let $π:(E,\nabla^{E}) \to (M,g)$ be an affine submersion with horizontal distribution, where $\nabla^{E}$ is a symmetric connection and $M$ is a Riemannian manifold. Let $σ$ be a section of $π$, namely, $π\circ σ= Id_{M}$. It is possible to study the harmonic property of section $σ$ in two ways. First, we see $σ$ as a harmonic map. Second, we see $σ$ as harmonic section. In the Riemannian context, it means that $σ$ is a critical point of the vertical functional energy. Our main goal is to find conditions to the assertion: $σ$ is a harmonic map if and only if $σ$ is a harmonic section.
We prove that on a compact $n$-dimensional spin manifold admitting a non-trivial harmonic 1-form of constant length, every eigenvalue $λ$ of the Dirac operator satisfies the inequality $λ^2 \geq \frac{n-1}{4(n-2)}\inf_M Scal$. In the limiting case the universal cover of the manifold is isometric to $R\times N$ where $N$ is a manifold admitting Killing spinors.
We establish a lower bound for the eigenvalues of the Dirac operator defined on a compact Kähler-Einstein manifold of positive scalar curvature and endowed with particular ${\rm spin}^c$ structures. The limiting case is characterized by the existence of Kählerian Killing ${\rm spin}^c$ spinors in a certain subbundle of the spinor bundle. Moreover, we show that the Clifford multiplication between an effective harmonic form and a Kählerian Killing ${\rm spin}^c$ spinor field vanishes. This extends to the ${\rm spin}^c$ case the result of A. Moroianu stating that, on a compact Kähler-Einstein man…
We study the tt*-geometry with vanishing endormorphism $\mathcal{U}$. Given an integrable harmonic Higgs bundle $(E, h, Φ, \mathcal{U},\mathcal{Q})$ on a complex manifold $M$, Firstly we prove that, under the \emph{IS} condition, vanishing $\mathcal{U}$ implies vanishing Higgs field $Φ$ and the Chern connection of the Hermitian Einstein metric $h$ is a holomorphic connection, so the metric $h$ and $\mathcal{Q}$ are invariant. Secondly, without the \emph{IS} condition, we show that vanishing $\mathcal{U}$ will imply vanishing Higgs field $Φ$ if we assume that the Chern connection of $h$ is a ho…
This paper is devoted to the study of the conformal spectrum (and more precisely the first eigenvalue) of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on a smooth connected compact Riemannian surface without boundary, endowed with a conformal class. We give a constructive proof of a critical metric which is smooth except at some conical singularities and maximizes the first eigenvalue in the conformal class of the background metric. We also prove that the map associating a finite number of eigenvectors of the maximizing $λ_1$ into the sphere is harmonic, establishing a link between conformal spectrum and har…
We use the density function of a harmonic space to obtain estimates for the eigenvalues of the Jacobi operator; when these estimates are sharp, then the harmonic space is a symmetric Osserman space.
} In this article, we put forward a Neumann eigenvalue problem for the bi-harmonic operator $Δ^2$ on a bounded smooth domain $\Om$ in the Euclidean $n$-space ${\bf R}^n$ ($n\ge2$) and then prove that the corresponding first non-zero eigenvalue $Υ_1(\Om)$ admits the isoperimetric inequality of Szegö-Weinberger type: $Υ_1(\Om)\le Υ_1(B_{\Om})$, where $B_{\Om}$ is a ball in ${\bf R}^n$ with the same volume of $\Om$. The isoperimetric inequality of Szegö-Weinberger type for the first nonzero Neumann eigenvalue of the even-multi-Laplacian operators $Δ^{2m}$ ($m\ge1$) on $\Om$ is also exploited.
We prove the existence of nonconstant harmonic maps of optimal regularity from an arbitrary closed manifold $(M^n,g)$ of dimension $n>2$ to any closed, non-aspherical manifold $N$ containing no stable minimal two-spheres. In particular, this gives the first general existence result for harmonic maps from higher-dimensional manifolds to a large class of positively curved targets. In the special case of the round spheres $N=\mathbb{S}^k$, $k\geq 3$, we obtain a distinguished family of nonconstant harmonic maps $M\to \mathbb{S}^k$ of index at most $k+1$, with singular set of codimension at least …
In this paper, by extending the notions of harmonic transplantation and harmonic radius in the Heisenberg group, we give an upper bound for the first eigenvalue for the following Dirichlet problem: $$(P_Ω) \left\{ \begin{array}{lllll} -Δ_{\mathbb{H}^1} u & = & λu & \mbox{in} & Ωu & = & 0 & \mbox{on} & \partial Ω, \end{array} \right.$$ where $ Ω$ is a regular bounded domain of $ \mathbb{H}^1$ with smooth boundary and $Δ_{\mathbb{H}^1}$ is the Kohn-Laplace operator. Using the results of P.Pansu which give the relation between the volume of $Ω$ and the perimeter of its boundary. we prove the foll…
We present a unified description of extremal metrics for the Laplace and Steklov eigenvalues on manifolds of arbitrary dimension using the notion of $n$-harmonic maps. Our approach extends the well-known results linking extremal metrics for eigenvalues on surfaces with minimal immersions and harmonic maps. In the process, we uncover two previously unknown features of the Steklov eigenvalues. First, we show that in higher dimensions there is a unique normalization involving both the volume of the boundary and of the manifold itself, which leads to meaningful extremal eigenvalue problems. Second…
The paper develops the fundamentals of quaternionic holomorphic curve theory. The holomorphic functions in this theory are conformal maps from a Riemann surface into the 4-sphere, i.e., the quaternionic projective line. Basic results such as the Riemann-Roch Theorem for quaternionic holomorphic vector bundles, the Kodaira embedding and the Pluecker relations for linear systems are proven. Interpretations of these results in terms of the differential geometry of surfaces in 3- and 4-space are hinted at throughout the paper. Applications to estimates of the Willmore functional on constant mean c…
In this paper we are concerned with harmonic maps and minimal immersions defined on compact Riemannian manifolds and with values in homogenous strongly harmonic manifolds. We show some results on the Morse index by varying these maps along suitable conformal vector fields. We obtain also that they are global maxima on some subspaces of the eigenspaces corresponding to the nonvanishing eigenvalues of the Laplacian operator on the target manifolds.
We show that any closed spin manifold not diffeomorphic to the two-sphere admits a sequence of volume-one-Riemannian metrics for which the smallest non-zero Dirac eigenvalue tends to zero. As an application, we compare the Dirac spectrum with the conformal volume.
