The concept of Gorenstein dimension, defined by Auslander and Bridger for finitely generated modules over a Noetherian ring, is studied in the context of finitely presented modules over a coherent ring. A generalization of the Auslander-Bridger formula is established and is used as a cornerstone in the development of a theory of coherent Gorenstein rings.
We introduce and study a new class of morphisms which includes morphisms represented by monomorphisms in the sense of Auslander and Bridger. As an application, we give not only an extension of Kato's theorem on morphisms represented by monomorphisms, but also a common generalization of several results due to Auslander and Bridger that describe relationships between torsionfreeness and the grades of Ext modules.
The Auslander-Reiten conjecture is a notorious open problem about the vanishing of Ext modules. In a Cohen-Macaulay complete local ring $R$ with a parameter ideal $Q$, the Auslander-Reiten conjecture holds for $R$ if and only if it holds for the residue ring $R/Q$. In the former part of this paper, we study the Auslander-Reiten conjecture for the ring $R/Q^\ell$ in connection with that for $R$, and prove the equivalence of them for the case where $R$ is Gorenstein and $\ell\le \dim R$. In the latter part, we generalize the result of the minimal multiplicity by J. Sally. Due to these two of our…
Let R be a homomorphic image of a Gorenstein local ring. Recent work has shown that there is a bridge between Auslander categories and modules of finite Gorenstein homological dimensions over R. We use Gorenstein dimensions to prove new results about Auslander categories and vice versa. For example, we establish base change relations between the Auslander categories of the source and target rings in a homomorphism R -> S of finite flat dimension.
Of the many interesting insights in the Auslander-Bridger Memoir of 1969, the theory of Gorenstein dimension has most often been taken up by commutative algebraists. Over a local ring, it deals with resolutions by modules which are totally reflexive with regard to free modules. For some years now, one has been trying to replace frees by semidualizing modules. This has met with success, and more is to follow. To me however, it makes sense to first try and understand semidualizing modules themselves better. This note shows in a direct way that they share many properties with free modules. One ho…
In this paper, we study Gorenstein injective, projective, and flat modules over a Noetherian ring $R$. For an $R$-module $M$, we denote by ${\rm Gpd}_RM$ and ${\rm Gfd}_R M$ the Gorenstein projective and flat dimensions of $M$, respectively. We show that ${\rm Gpd}_RM<\infty$ if and only if ${\rm Gfd}_RM<\infty$ provided the Krull dimension of $R$ is finite. Moreover, in the case that $R$ is local, we correspond to a dualizing complex ${\bf D}$ of $\hat{R}$, the classes $A'(R)$ and $B'(R)$ of $R$-modules. For a module $M$ over a local ring $R$, we show that $M\in A'(R)$ if and only if ${\rm Gp…
The Nakayama conjecture is one of the most important conjectures in ring theory. The Auslander-Reiten conjecture is closely related to it. The purpose of this note is to show that if the Auslander-Reiten conjecture holds in codimension one for a commutative Gorenstein ring $R$, then it holds for $R$.
We define the symmetric Auslander category A^s(R) to consist of complexes of projective modules whose left- and right-tails are equal to the left- and right tails of totally acyclic complexes of projective modules. The symmetric Auslander category contains A(R), the ordinary Auslander category. It is well known that A(R) is intimately related to Gorenstein projective modules, and our main result is that A^s(R) is similarly related to what can reasonably be called Gorenstein projective homomorphisms. Namely, there is an equivalence of triangulated categories: \underline{GMor}(R) --> A^s(R) / K^…
This paper gives a new approximation theory for finitely generated modules over commutative Noetherian rings, which unifies two famous approximation theorems; one is due to Auslander and Bridger and the other is due to Auslander and Buchweitz. Modules admitting such approximations shall be studied.
We generalize the notions of $n$-cluster tilting subcategories and $τ$-selfinjective algebras into $n$-precluster tilting subcategories and $τ_n$-selfinjective algebras, where we show that a subcategory naturally associated to $n$-precluster tilting subcategories has a higher Auslander--Reiten theory. Furthermore, we give a bijection between $n$-precluster tilting subcategories and $n$-minimal Auslander--Gorenstein algebras, which is a higher dimensional analog of Auslander--Solberg correspondence (Auslander--Solberg, 1993) as well as a Gorenstein analog of $n$-Auslander correspondence (Iyama,…
Let R be a commutative noetherian ring. We consider the question of when n-syzygy modules over R are n-torsionfree in the sense of Auslander and Bridger. Our tools include Serre's condition and certain conditions on the local Gorenstein property of R. Our main result implies the converse of a celebrated theorem of Evans and Griffith.
We consider the converse of the Butler, Auslander-Reiten's Theorem which is on the relations for Grothendieck groups. We show that a Gorenstein ring is of finite representation type if the Auslander-Reiten sequences generate the relations for Grothendieck groups. This gives an affirmative answer of the conjecture due to Auslander.
Let $R$ be a complete local Gorenstein ring of dimension one, with maximal ideal m. We show that if $M$ is a Cohen-Macaulay $R$-module which begins an AR-sequence, then this sequence is produced by a particular endomorphism of m corresponding to a minimal prime ideal. We apply this result to determining the shape of some components of Auslander-Reiten quivers.
Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian local ring with residue field $k$. Using the structure of Vogel cohomology, for any finitely generated module $M$, we introduce a new dimension, called $ζ$-dimension, denoted by $ζ-dim_R M$. This dimension is finer than Gorenstein dimension and has nice properties enjoyed by homological dimensions. In particular, it characterizes Gorenstein rings in the sense that: a ring $R$ is Gorenstein if and only if every finitely generated $R$-module has finite $ζ$-dimension. Our definition of $ζ$-dimension offer a new homological perspective on the projective dimensio…
We give a principle in derived categories, which lies behind the classical Auslander-Reiten duality and its generalized version by Iyama and Wemyss. We apply the principle to show the validity of the Auslander-Reiten conjecture over a Gorenstein ring in the case where the ring has dimension larger than two and the singular locus has at most one dimension.
Auslander conjectured that every Artin algebra satisfies a certain condition on vanishing of cohomology of finitely generated modules. The failure of this conjecture - by a 2003 counterexample due to Jorgensen and Sega - motivates the consideration of the class of rings that do satisfy Auslander's condition. We call them AC rings and show that an AC Artin algebra that is left-Gorenstein is also right-Gorenstein. Furthermore, the Auslander-Reiten Conjecture is proved for AC rings, and Auslander's G-dimension is shown to be functorial for AC rings that are commutative or have a dualizing complex…
In this paper, we aim to obtain some results under the condition that the dual of a module over a commutative Noetherian ring has finite Gorenstein dimension. In this direction, we derive results involving vanishing of Ext as well as the freeness or totally reflexivity of modules. For instance, we provide a generalization of a celebrated theorem by Auslander and Bridger, obtain criteria for the totally reflexivity of modules over Cohen-Macaulay rings as well as of locally totally reflexive modules on the punctured spectrum, and recover a result by Araya. Moreover, we prove that the Auslander-R…
In this paper we study homological dimensions of finitely generated modules over commutative Noetherian local rings, called reducing homological dimensions. We obtain new characterizations of Gorenstein and complete intersection local rings via reducing homological dimensions. For example, we extend a classical result of Auslander and Bridger, and prove that a local ring is Gorenstein if and only if each finitely generated module over it has finite reducing Gorenstein dimension. Along the way, we prove various connections between complexity and reducing projective dimension of modules.
We study homological properties of test modules that are, in principle, modules that detect finite homological dimensions. The main outcome of our results is a generalization of a classical theorem of Auslander and Bridger: we prove that, if a commutative Noetherian complete local ring R admits a test module of finite Gorenstein dimension, then R is Gorenstein.
Auslander's depth formula for pairs of Tor-independent modules over a regular local ring, depth(M \otimes N) = depth(M) + depth(N) - depth(R), has been generalized in several directions over a span of four decades. In this paper we establish a depth formula that holds for every pair of Tate Tor-independent modules over a Gorenstein local ring. It subsumes previous eneralizations of Auslander's formula and yields exact bounds for vanishing of cohomology over certain Gorenstein rings.
We give counterexamples to the following conjecture of Auslander: given a finitely generated module $M$ over an Artin algebra $Λ$, there exists a positive integer $n_M$ such that for all finitely generated $Λ$-modules $N$, if $\Ext_Λ^i(M,N)=0$ for all $i\gg 0$, then $\Ext_Λ^i(M,N)=0$ for all $i\geq n_M$. Some of our examples moreover yield homologically defined classes of commutative local rings strictly between the class of local complete intersections and the class of local Gorenstein rings.
In these expository notes I discuss several concepts and results in the theory of modules over commutative rings, revolving around the Gorenstein dimension of modules. Some of the related notions are the Auslander dual, k-torsionless modules, and k-th syzygies. Essentially everything in these notes can be found, in one form or another, in the memoir "Stable module theory" by M. Auslander and M. Bridger (Mem. A.M.S., no. 94, 1969). The only difference is in presentation. In the Auslander-Bridger memoir many of the results are proved in the most general setting, e.g. over possibly non-commutativ…
In this paper we explore consequences of the vanishing of ${\rm Ext}$ for finitely generated modules over a quasi-fiber product ring $R$; that is, $R$ is a local ring such that $R/(\underline x)$ is a non-trivial fiber product ring, for some regular sequence $\underline x$ of $R$. Equivalently, the maximal ideal of $R/(\underline x)$ decomposes as a direct sum of two nonzero ideals. Gorenstein quasi-fiber product rings are AB-rings and are Ext-bounded. We show in Theorem 3.31 that quasi-fiber product rings satisfy a sharpened form of the Auslander-Reiten Conjecture. We also make some observati…
Let R be a commutative noetherian ring. Denote by mod R the category of finitely generated R-modules. In this paper, we study n-torsionfree modules in the sense of Auslander and Bridger, by comparing them with n-syzygy modules, and modules satisfying Serre's condition (S_n). We mainly investigate closedness properties of the full subcategories of mod R consisting of those modules.
Auslander and Bridger introduced the notions of n-spherical modules and n-torsionfree modules. In this paper, we construct an equivalence between the stable category of n-spherical modules and the category of modules of grade at least n, and provide its Gorenstein analogue. As an application, we prove that if R is a Gorenstein local ring of Krull dimension d>0, then there exists a stable equivalence between the category of (d-1)-torsionfree R-modules and the category of d-spherical modules relative to the local cohomology functor.
Let $(R, \m)$ be a $d$-dimensional commutative noetherian local ring. Let $\M$ denote the morphism category of finitely generated $R$-modules and let $\Sc$ be the submodule category of $\M$. In this paper, we specify the Auslander transpose in submodule category $\Sc$. It will turn out that the Auslander transpose in this category can be described explicitly within ${\rm mod}R$, the category of finitely generated $R$-modules. This result is exploited to study the linkage theory as well as the Auslander-Reiten theory in $\Sc$. Indeed, a characterization of horizontally linked morphisms in terms…
We investigate the properties of categories of G_C-flat R-modules where C is a semidualizing module over a commutative noetherian ring R. We prove that the category of all G_C-flat R-modules is part of a weak AB-context, in the terminology of Hashimoto. In particular, this allows us to deduce the existence of certain Auslander-Buchweitz approximations for R-modules of finite G_C-flat dimension. We also prove that two procedures for building R-modules from complete resolutions by certain subcategories of G_C-flat R-modules yield only the modules in the original subcategories.
We introduce the finitistic extension degree of a ring and investigate rings for which it is finite. The Auslander-Reiten Conjecture is proved for rings of finite finitistic extension degree and these rings are also shown to have finite finitistic dimension. We apply these results to better understand a gen- eralized version of the Auslander-Reiten Condition for Gorenstein rings. We also record how the finitistic extension degree behaves with respect to many change of ring procedures that arise frequently in the commutative setting.
We establish new results on (co)homology vanishing and Ext-Tor dualities, and derive a number of freeness criteria for finite modules over Cohen-Macaulay local rings. In the main application, we settle the long-standing Auslander-Reiten conjecture for the class of Cohen-Macaulay Burch rings, among other results toward this and related problems, e.g., the Tachikawa and Huneke-Wiegand conjectures. We also derive results on further topics of interest such as Cohen-Macaulayness of tensor products and Tor-independence, and inspired by a paper of Huneke and Leuschke we obtain characterizations of wh…
Let R be a commutative Noetherian local ring. We show that R is Gorenstein if and only if every finitely generated R-module can be embedded in a finitely generated R-module of finite projective dimension. This extends a result of Auslander and Bridger to rings of higher Krull dimension, and it also improves a result due to Foxby where the ring is assumed to be Cohen-Macaulay.
We give a result of Auslander-Ringel-Tachikawa type for Gorenstein-projective modules over a complete Gorenstein order. In particular, we prove that a complete Gorenstein order is of finite Cohen-Macaulay representation type if and only if every indecomposable pure-injective object in the stable category of Gorenstein-projective modules is compact.
Hochster's Monomial Conjecture and Canonical Element Conjecture date back some thirty resp. twenty years. They concern all noetherian commutative local rings, and were proved by their originator right away in equal characteristic. Thanks to recent important progress by Heitmann, they are now known to hold in mixed characteristic for all such rings of dimension < 4. Nevertheless, the remaining cases are among the best guarded secrets in this area. We show that these conjectures can be considered as statements about Gorenstein rings of the same dimension and particular characteristic and their m…
We refine a well-known theorem of Auslander and Reiten about the extension closedness of n-th syzygies over noether algebras. Applying it, we obtain the converse of a celebrated theorem of Evans and Griffith on Serre's condition (S_n) and the local Gorensteiness of a commutative ring in height less than n. This especially extends a recent result of Araya and Iima concerning a Cohen-Macaulay local ring with canonical module to an arbitrary local ring.
One of the most stunning results in the representation theory of Cohen-Macaulay rings is Auslander's well known theorem which states a CM local ring of finite CM type can have at most an isolated singularity. There have been some generalizations of this in the direction of countable CM type by Huneke and Leuschke. In this paper, we focus on a different generalization by restricting the class of modules. Here we consider modules which are high syzygies of MCM modules over non-commutative rings, exploiting the fact that non-commutative rings allow for finer homological behavior. We then generali…
We study the converse of a theorem of Butler and Auslander-Reiten. We show that a Cohen-Macaulay local ring with an isolated singularity has only finitely many isomorphism classes of indecomposable summands of syzygies of Cohen-Macaulay modules if the Auslander-Reiten sequences generate the relation of the Grothendieck group of finitely generated modules. This extends a recent result of Hiramatsu, which gives an affirmative answer in the Gorenstein case to a conjecture of Auslander.
We introduce and investigate the notion of $\gc$-projective modules over (possibly non-noetherian) commutative rings, where $C$ is a semidualizing module. This extends Holm and Jørgensen's notion of $C$-Gorenstein projective modules to the non-noetherian setting and generalizes projective and Gorenstein projective modules within this setting. We then study the resulting modules of finite $\gc$-projective dimension, showing in particular that they admit $\gc$-projective approximations, a generalization of the maximal Cohen-Macaulay approximations of Auslander and Buchweitz. Over a local (noethe…
Regularity, complete intersection and Gorenstein properties of a local ring can be characterized by homological conditions on the canonical homomorphism into its residue field (Serre, Avramov, Auslander). It is also known that in positive characteristic, the Frobenius endomorphism can also be used for these characterizations (Kunz, ...), and more generally any contracting endomorphism. We introduce here a class of local homomorphisms, in some sense larger than all above, for which these characterizations still hold, providing an unified treatment for this class of homomorphisms.
In this paper we are concerned with absolute, relative and Tate Tor modules. In the first part of the paper we generalize a result of Avramov and Martsinkovsky by using the Auslander-Buchweitz approximation theory, and obtain a new exact sequence connecting absolute Tor modules with relative and Tate Tor modules. In the second part of the paper we consider a depth equality, called the depth formula, which has been initially introduced by Auslander and developed further by Huneke and Wiegand. As an application of our main result, we generalize a result of Yassemi and give a new sufficient condi…
We give sufficient conditions for a Frobenius category to be equivalent to the category of Gorenstein projective modules over an Iwanaga-Gorenstein ring. We then apply this result to the Frobenius category of special Cohen-Macaulay modules over a rational surface singularity, where we show that the associated stable category is triangle equivalent to the singularity category of a certain discrepant partial resolution of the given rational singularity. In particular, this produces uncountably many Iwanaga-Gorenstein rings of finite GP type. We also apply our method to representation theory, obt…
Let $R$ be a Cohen--Macaulay normal domain with a canonical module $ω_R$. It is proved that if $R$ admits a noncommutative crepant resolution (NCCR), then necessarily it is $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein. Writing $S$ for a Zariski local canonical cover of $R$, then a tight relationship between the existence of noncommutative (crepant) resolutions on $R$ and $S$ is given. A weaker notion of Gorenstein modification is developed, and a similar tight relationship is given. There are three applications: non-Gorenstein quotient singularities by connected reductive groups cannot admit an NCCR, the centre of…
Let $R$ be a local ring and $M$ a finitely generated $R$-module. The complete intersection dimension of $M$--defined by Avramov, Gasharov and Peeva, and denoted $\cidim_R(M)$--is a homological invariant whose finiteness implies that $M$ is similar to a module over a complete intersection. It is related to the classical projective dimension and to Auslander and Bridger's Gorenstein dimension by the inequalities $\gdim_R(N)\leq\cidim_R(N)\leq\pd_R(N)$. Using Blanco and Majadas' version of complete intersection dimension for local ring homomorphisms, we prove the following generalization of a the…
For a given class of modules $\A$, we denote by $\widetilde{\A}$ the class of exact complexes $X$ having all cycles in $\A$, and by $dw(\A)$ the class of complexes $Y$ with all components $Y_j$ in $\A$. We consider a two sided noetherian ring $R$ and we use the notations $\mathcal{GI}$ $(\mathcal{GF}, \mathcal{GP})$ for the class of Gorenstein injective (flat, projective respectively) $R$-modules. We prove (Theorem 1) that the following are equivalent: 1. Every exact complex of injective modules is totally acyclic. 2. Every exact complex of Gorenstein injective modules is in $\widetilde{\mathc…
The celebrated Auslander-Reiten Conjecture, on the vanishing of self extensions of a module, is one of the long-standing conjectures in ring theory. Although it is still open, there are several results in the literature that establish the conjecture over Gorenstein rings under certain conditions. The purpose of this article is to obtain extensions of such results over Cohen-Macaulay local rings that admit canonical modules. In particular, our main result recovers theorems of Araya, and Ono and Yoshino simultaneously.
We establish a link between trace modules and rigidity in modules over Noetherian rings. Using the theory of trace ideals we make partial progress on a question of Dao, and on the Auslander-Reiten conjecture over Artinian Gorenstein rings.
