This paper is devoted to the study of probability measures with heavy tails. Using the Lyapunov function approach we prove that such measures satisfy different kind of functional inequalities such as weak Poincaré and weak Cheeger, weighted Poincaré and weighted Cheeger inequalities and their dual forms. Proofs are short and we cover very large situations. For product measures on $\R^n$ we obtain the optimal dimension dependence using the mass transportation method. Then we derive (optimal) isoperimetric inequalities. Finally we deal with spherically symmetric measures. We recover and improve many previous results.
In this paper, we study some functional inequalities (such as Poincaré inequalities, logarithmic Sobolev inequalities, generalized Cheeger isoperimetric inequalities, transportation-information inequalities and transportation-entropy inequalities) for reversible nearest-neighbor Markov processes on a connected finite graph by means of (random) path method. We provide estimates of the involved constants.
We establish a family of isoperimetric inequalities for sets that interpolate between intersection bodies and dual Lp centroid bodies. This provides a bridge between the Busemann intersection inequality and the Lutwak--Zhang inequality. The approach depends on new empirical versions of these inequalities.
We obtain new oscillation inequalities in metric spaces in terms of the Peetre $K-$functional and the isoperimetric profile. Applications provided include a detailed study of Fractional Sobolev inequalities and the Morrey-Sobolev embedding theorems in different contexts. In particular we include a detailed study of Gaussian measures as well as probablity measures between Gaussian and exponential. We show a kind of reverse Polya-Szego principle that allows us to obtain continuity as a self improvement from boundedness, using symetrization inequalities. Our methods also allow for precise estimat…
We find sufficient conditions for a probability measure $μ$ to satisfy an inequality of the type $$ \int_{\R^d} f^2 F\Bigl(\frac{f^2}{\int_{\R^d} f^2 d μ} \Bigr) d μ\le C \int_{\R^d} f^2 c^{*}\Bigl(\frac{|\nabla f|}{|f|} \Bigr) d μ+ B \int_{\R^d} f^2 d μ, $$ where $F$ is concave and $c$ (a cost function) is convex. We show that under broad assumptions on $c$ and $F$ the above inequality holds if for some $δ>0$ and $ε>0$ one has $$ \int_{0}^ε Φ\Bigl(δc\Bigl[\frac{t F(\frac{1}{t})}{{\mathcal I}_μ(t)} \Bigr] \Bigr) dt < \infty, $$ where ${\mathcal I}_μ$ is the isoperimetric function of $μ$ and $Φ…
We prove an optimal reverse Poincaré inequality for the heat semigroup generated by the sub-Laplacian on a Carnot group of any step. As an application we give new proofs of the isoperimetric inequality and of the boundedness of the Riesz transform in Carnot groups.
We introduce and study a notion of Orlicz hypercontractive semigroups. We analyze their relations with general $F$-Sobolev inequalities, thus extending Gross hypercontractivity theory. We provide criteria for these Sobolev type inequalities and for related properties. In particular, we implement in the context of probability measures the ideas of Maz'ja's capacity theory, and present equivalent forms relating the capacity of sets to their measure. Orlicz hypercontractivity efficiently describes the integrability improving properties of the Heat semigroup associated to the Boltzmann measures $μ…
We provide a simple, general argument to obtain improvements of concentration-type inequalities starting from improvements of their corresponding isoperimetric-type inequalities. We apply this argument to obtain robust improvements of the Brunn-Minkowski inequality (for Minkowski sums between generic sets and convex sets) and of the Gaussian concentration inequality. The former inequality is then used to obtain a robust improvement of the Riesz rearrangement inequality under certain natural conditions. These conditions are compatible with the applications to a finite-range nonlocal isoperimetr…
We study in details the isoperimetric profile of product probability measures with tails between the exponential and the Gaussian regime. In particular we exhibit many examples where coordinate half-spaces are approximate solutions of the isoperimetric problem.
Let $μ$ be a probability measure on $\mathbb{R}^n$ with a bounded density $f$. We prove that the marginals of $f$ on most subspaces are well-bounded. For product measures, studied recently by Rudelson and Vershynin, our results show there is a trade-off between the strength of such bounds and the probability with which they hold. Our proof rests on new affinely-invariant extremal inequalities for certain averages of $f$ on the Grassmannian and affine Grassmannian. These are motivated by Lutwak's dual affine quermassintegrals for convex sets. We show that key invariance properties of the latter…
For a family X of k-subsets of the set 1,...,n, let |X| be the cardinality of X and let Gamma(X,mu) be the expected maximum weight of a subset from X when the weights of 1,...,n are chosen independently at random from a symmetric probability distribution mu on R. We consider the inverse isoperimetric problem of finding mu for which Gamma(X,mu) gives the best estimate of ln|X|. We prove that the optimal choice of mu is the logistic distribution, in which case Gamma(X,mu) provides an asymptotically tight estimate of ln|X| as k^{-1}ln|X| grows. Since in many important cases Gamma(X,mu) can be eas…
Mixtures are convex combinations of laws. Despite this simple definition, a mixture can be far more subtle than its mixed components. For instance, mixing Gaussian laws may produce a potential with multiple deep wells. We study in the present work fine properties of mixtures with respect to concentration of measure and Sobolev type functional inequalities. We provide sharp Laplace bounds for Lipschitz functions in the case of generic mixtures, involving a transportation cost diameter of the mixed family. Additionally, our analysis of Sobolev type inequalities for two-component mixtures reveals…
In this paper non-asymptotic exponential estimates are derived for the tail distribution of polynomial martingale differences in terms unconditional tails distributions of summands. Applications are considered in the theory of polynomials on independent random variables, to the theory of U-statistics, multiply martingale series and in the theory of weak compactness measures on the Banach spaces. We present order of magnitude estimates for the quantiles of non-negative linear combinations of non-negative random variables, as well as deviation inequalities for general linear combinations of independent random variables, under the assumption that all random variables satisfy the same power-type tail bound on $\mathbb{P}\{\left\vert X_i\right\vert>t\}$ of the form $t^{-q}$, $t^{-q/2}$ or $t^{-q/2}(\ln t)^{q/2}$, for $q>2$. The third type is applicable in the nonlinear setting. In the situations we consider, these results improve on classical estimates of Nagaev.
We derive the tail inequalities between two random variables starting from inequalities between its moment, or more generally between its Lebesgue-Riesz norms, which holds true on certain sets of parameters. We consider some applications into the martingale theory.
We study coercive inequalities in Orlicz spaces associated to the probability measures on finite and infinite dimensional spaces which tails decay slower than the Gaussian ones. We provide necessary and sufficient criteria for such inequalities to hold and discuss relations between various classes of inequalities.
In this paper we obtain the non-asymptotic exact moment and tails estimates for polynomial on martingale differences. We give also some examples on order to show the exactness of obtained results.
The Hoeffding-type-inequalities are obtained for the distribution tails of canonical (degenerate) U- and V-statistics of an arbitrary order based on samples from a stationary sequence of observations satisfying $ρ$-mixing.
Hoeffding-type exponential inequalities are obtained for the distribution tails of canonical von Mises' statistics of arbitrary order based on samples from a stationary sequence of random variables satisfying the φ-mixing condition. The present paper weakens the restrictions on the coefficient φ() which are contained in the paper "Exponential inequalities for the distributions of canonical U- and V-statistics of dependent observations" by Borisov and Volodko (2009). At the same time, we correct the corresponding proof in this paper.
We study one-dimensional functional inequalities of the type of Poincaré, logarithmic Sobolev and Wirtinger, with weight, for probability densities with polynomial tails. As main examples, we obtain sharp inequalities satisfied by inverse Gamma densities, taking values on $R_+$, and Cauchy-type densities, taking values on $R$. In this last case, we improve the result obtained by Bobkov and Ledoux in 2009 by introducing a better weight function in the logarithmic Sobolev inequality. The results are obtained by resorting to Fokker-Planck type equations which possess these densities as steady sta…
The hypergeometric distribution is briefly and informally surveyed, including popular notation, symmetries, and the tail inequalities $Pr[i \ge E[i]+tn] \le e^{-2t^2n}$ and $Pr[i \le E[i]-tn] \le e^{-2t^2n}$.
We study probability inequalities leading to tail estimates in a general semigroup $\mathscr{G}$ with a translation-invariant metric $d_{\mathscr{G}}$. (An important and central example of this in the functional analysis literature is that of $\mathscr{G}$ a Banach space.) Using our prior work [Ann. Prob. 2017] that extends the Hoffmann-Jorgensen inequality to all metric semigroups, we obtain tail estimates and approximate bounds for sums of independent semigroup-valued random variables, their moments, and decreasing rearrangements. In particular, we obtain the "correct" universal constants in…
We generalize a famous tail Doob's inequality, relative two non-negative random variables, arising in the martingale theory, in two directions: on the more general source data and on the random variables belonging to the so-called Grand Lebesgue Spaces. We bring also several examples in each sections in order to show the exactness of our estimates.
We prove upper bounds on the transition probabilities of random walks with i.i.d. random conductances with a polynomial lower tail near $0$. We consider both constant and variable speed models. Our estimates are sharp. As a consequence, we derive local central limit theorems, parabolic Harnack inequalities and Gaussian bounds for the heat kernel. Some of the arguments are robust and applicable for random walks on general graphs. Such results are stated under a general setting.
In this work we present concentration inequalities for the sum $S_n$ of independent integer-valued not necessary indentically distributed random variables, where each variable has tail function that can be bounded by some power function with exponent $-α$. We show that when $0<α\leq 1$, then the sum does not have finite expectation, however, with high probability we have that $|S_n|=O\left(n^{1/α}\right)$. When $α>1$, then the sum $S_n$ is concentrated around its mean. Since the r.vs. that constitute the sum has tails, which can be bounded by some power function, it follows that results of thi…
This note contains some estimates for tail spaces on Hamming cube. We use analytic paraproduct operator for that purpose. We also show several types of Bernstein--Markov inequalities for Banach space valued functions on Hamming cube. Here the novelty is in getting rid of some irritating logarithms and in proving Bernstein--Markov inequalities for $|\nabla f|_X$ rather than for $Δ^{1/2} f$ for $X$ valued polynomials on Hamming cube.
Let $X$ be an integrable discrete random variable over $\{0, 1, 2, \ldots\}$ with $\mathbb{P}(X = i + 1) \leq \mathbb{P}(X = i)$ for all $i$. Then for any integer $a \geq 1$, $\mathbb{P}(X \leq a) \leq \mathbb{E}[X] / (2a - 1)$. Let $W$ be an discrete random variable over $\{\ldots, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, \ldots\}$ with finite second moment where the $\mathbb{P}(W = i)$ values are unimodal. Then $\mathbb{P}(|W - \mathbb{E}[W]| \geq a) \leq (\mathbb{V}(W) + 1 / 12) / (2(a - 1 / 2)^2)$.
This paper derives exponential tail bounds and polynomial moment inequalities for the spectral norm deviation of a random matrix from its mean value. The argument depends on a matrix extension of Stein's method of exchangeable pairs for concentration of measure, as introduced by Chatterjee. Recent work of Mackey et al. uses these techniques to analyze random matrices with additive structure, while the enhancements in this paper cover a wider class of matrix-valued random elements. In particular, these ideas lead to a bounded differences inequality that applies to random matrices constructed fr…

We derive exponential tail inequalities for sums of random matrices with no dependence on the explicit matrix dimensions. These are similar to the matrix versions of the Chernoff bound and Bernstein inequality except with the explicit matrix dimensions replaced by a trace quantity that can be small even when the dimension is large or infinite. Some applications to principal component analysis and approximate matrix multiplication are given to illustrate the utility of the new bounds.
We investigate links between the so-called Stein's density approach in dimension one and some functional and concentration inequalities. We show that measures having a finite first moment and a density with connected support satisfy a weighted Poincaré inequality with the weight being the Stein kernel, that indeed exists and is unique in this case. Furthermore, we prove weighted log-Sobolev and asymmetric Brascamp-Lieb type inequalities related to Stein kernels. We also show that existence of a uniformly bounded Stein kernel is sufficient to ensure a positive Cheeger isoperimetric constant. Th…
In recent years, tensors have been applied to different applications in science and engineering fields. In order to establish theory about tail bounds of the tensors summation behavior, this work extends previous work by considering the tensors summation tail behavior of the top $k$-largest singular values of a function of the tensors summation, instead of the largest/smallest singular value of the tensors summation directly (identity function) explored in Shih Yu's work: Convenient tail bounds for sums of random tensors. Majorization and antisymmetric tensor product tools are main techniques …
We give a sufficient and necessary condition for a probability measure $μ$ on the real line to satisfy the logarithmic Sobolev inequality for convex functions. The condition is expressed in terms of the unique left-continuous and non-decreasing map transporting the symmetric exponential measure onto $μ$. The main tool in the proof is the theory of weak transport costs. As a consequence, we obtain dimension-free concentration bounds for the lower and upper tails of convex functions of independent random variables which satisfy the convex log-Sobolev inequality.
In this paper we present various new inequalities for tail proabilities for distributions that are elements of the most improtant exponential families. These families include the Poisson distributions, the Gamma distributions, the binomial distributions, the negative binomial distributions and the inverse Gaussian distributions. All these exponential families have simple variance functions and the variance functions play an important role in the exposition. All the inequalities presented in this paper are formulated in terms of the signed log-likelihood. The inequalities are of a qualitative n…
This note is concerned with lower tail estimates for product measures. Some improved deviation inequalities are obtained for functions satisfying some regularity and monotonicity assumptions. The arguments are based on semigroup interpolation together with Harris's negative association inequality and hypercontractive estimates.
Upper exponential inequalities for the tail probabilities of the centered and normalized number of triangles in the Erdös-Rényi graph are obtained, where the probability of every edge is fixed. The result is formulated in terms of random fields.
This paper presents new probability inequalities for sums of independent, random, self-adjoint matrices. These results place simple and easily verifiable hypotheses on the summands, and they deliver strong conclusions about the large-deviation behavior of the maximum eigenvalue of the sum. Tail bounds for the norm of a sum of random rectangular matrices follow as an immediate corollary. The proof techniques also yield some information about matrix-valued martingales. In other words, this paper provides noncommutative generalizations of the classical bounds associated with the names Azuma, Benn…
In this paper, we propose a new approach for deriving probabilistic inequalities. Our main idea is to exploit the information of underlying distributions by virtue of the monotone likelihood ratio property and Berry-Essen inequality. Unprecedentedly sharp bounds for the tail probabilities of some common distributions are established.
In this paper we prove multilevel concentration inequalities for bounded functionals $f = f(X_1, \ldots, X_n)$ of random variables $X_1, \ldots, X_n$ that are either independent or satisfy certain logarithmic Sobolev inequalities. The constants in the tail estimates depend on the operator norms of $k$-tensors of higher order differences of $f$. We provide applications in both dependent and independent random variables. This includes deviation inequalities for empirical processes $f(X) = \sup_{g \in \mathcal{F}} \lvert g(X) \rvert$ and suprema of homogeneous chaos in bounded random variables in…
Concentration inequalities for subgraph counts in random geometric graphs built over Poisson point processes are proved. The estimates give upper bounds for the probabilities $\mathbb{P}(N\geq M +r)$ and $\mathbb{P}(N\leq M - r)$ where $M$ is either a median or the expectation of a subgraph count $N$. The bounds for the lower tail have a fast Gaussian decay and the bounds for the upper tail satisfy an optimality condition. A special feature of the presented inequalities is that the underlying Poisson process does not need to have finite intensity measure. The tail estimates for subgraph counts…
This paper presents compact notations for concentration inequalities and convenient results to streamline probabilistic analysis. The new expressions describe the typical sizes and tails of random variables, allowing for simple operations without heavy use of inessential constants. They bridge classical asymptotic notations and modern non-asymptotic tail bounds together. Examples of different kinds demonstrate their efficacy.
If a random variable is not exponentially integrable, it is known that no concentration inequality holds for an infinite sequence of independent copies. Under mild conditions, we establish concentration inequalities for finite sequences of $n$ independent copies, with good dependence in $n$.
We prove logarithmic Sobolev inequalities and concentration results for convex functions and a class of product random vectors. The results are used to derive tail and moment inequalities for chaos variables (in spirit of Talagrand and Arcones, Gine). We also show that the same proof may be used for chaoses generated by log-concave random variables, recovering results by Lochowski and present an application to exponential integrability of Rademacher chaos.
Upper bounds for the probabilities $\mathbb{P}(F\geq \mathbb{E} F + r)$ and $\mathbb{P}(F\leq \mathbb{E} F - r)$ are proved, where $F$ is a certain component count associated with a random geometric graph built over a Poisson point process on $\mathbb{R}^d$. The bounds for the upper tail decay exponentially, and the lower tail estimates even have a Gaussian decay. For the proof of the concentration inequalities, recently developed methods based on logarithmic Sobolev inequalities are used and enhanced. A particular advantage of this approach is that the resulting inequalities even apply in set…

We study an equivalence of (i) deterministic pathwise statements appearing in the online learning literature (termed \emph{regret bounds}), (ii) high-probability tail bounds for the supremum of a collection of martingales (of a specific form arising from uniform laws of large numbers for martingales), and (iii) in-expectation bounds for the supremum. By virtue of the equivalence, we prove exponential tail bounds for norms of Banach space valued martingales via deterministic regret bounds for the online mirror descent algorithm with an adaptive step size. We extend these results beyond the line…

It is well known that Hoeffding's inequality has a lot of applications in the signal and information processing fields. How to improve Hoeffding's inequality and find the refinements of its applications have always attracted much attentions. An improvement of Hoeffding inequality was recently given by Hertz \cite{r1}. Eventhough such an improvement is not so big, it still can be used to update many known results with original Hoeffding's inequality, especially for Hoeffding-Azuma inequality for martingales. However, the results in original Hoeffding's inequality and its refinement one by Hertz…
We use the properties of the Matuszewska indices to show asymptotic inequalities for hazard rates. We discuss the relation between membership in the classes of dominatedly or extended rapidly varying tail distributions and corresponding hazard rate conditions. Convolution closure is established for the class of distributions with extended rapidly varying tails.
We derive sharp probability bounds on the tails of a product of symmetric non-negative random variables using only information about their first two moments. If the covariance matrix of the random variables is known exactly, these bounds can be computed numerically using semidefinite programming. If only an upper bound on the covariance matrix is available, the probability bounds on the right tails can be evaluated analytically. The bounds under precise and imprecise covariance information coincide for all left tails as well as for all right tails corresponding to quantiles that are either suf…
