We give a sufficient and necessary condition for a probability measure $μ$ on the real line to satisfy the logarithmic Sobolev inequality for convex functions. The condition is expressed in terms of the unique left-continuous and non-decreasing map transporting the symmetric exponential measure onto $μ$. The main tool in the proof is the theory of weak transport costs. As a consequence, we obtain dimension-free concentration bounds for the lower and upper tails of convex functions of independent random variables which satisfy the convex log-Sobolev inequality.
We present a class of modified logarithmic Sobolev inequality, interpolating between Poincaré and logarithmic Sobolev inequalities, suitable for measures of the type $\exp(-|x|^\al)$ or more complex $\exp(-|x|^\al\log^β(2+|x|))$ ($\al\in]1,2[$ and $\be\in\dR$) which lead to new concentration inequalities. These modified inequalities share common properties with usual logarithmic Sobolev inequalities, as tensorisation or perturbation, and imply as well Poincaré inequality. We also study the link between these new modified logarithmic Sobolev inequalities and transportation inequalities.
We study a class of logarithmic Sobolev inequalities with a general form of the energy functional. The class generalizes various examples of modified logarithmic Sobolev inequalities considered previously in the literature. Refining a method of Aida and Stroock for the classical logarithmic Sobolev inequality, we prove that if a measure on $\mathbb{R}^n$ satisfies a modified logarithmic Sobolev inequality then it satisfies a family of $L^p$-Sobolev-type inequalities with non-Euclidean norms of gradients (and dimension-independent constants). The latter are shown to yield various concentration-…
We study coercive inequalities in Orlicz spaces associated to the probability measures on finite and infinite dimensional spaces which tails decay slower than the Gaussian ones. We provide necessary and sufficient criteria for such inequalities to hold and discuss relations between various classes of inequalities.
If Poincar{é} inequality has been studied by Bobkov for radial measures, few is known about the logarithmic Sobolev inequalty in the radial case. We try to fill this gap here using different methods: Bobkov's argument and super-Poincar{é} inequalities, direct approach via L1-logarithmic Sobolev inequalities. We also give various examples where the obtained bounds are quite sharp. Recent bounds obtained by Lee-Vempala in the logconcave bounded case are refined for radial measures.
We prove that in the context of general Markov semigroups Beckner inequalities with constants separated from zero as $p\to 1^+$ are equivalent to the modified log Sobolev inequality (previously only one implication was known to hold in this generality). Further, by adapting an argument by Boucheron et al. we derive Sobolev type moment estimates which hold under these functional inequalities. We illustrate our results with applications to concentration of measure estimates (also of higher order, beyond the case of Lipschitz functions) for various stochastic models, including random permutations…
We prove that if ${(P_x)}_{x\in \mathscr X}$ is a family of probability measures which satisfy the log-Sobolev inequality and whose pairwise chi-squared divergences are uniformly bounded, and $μ$ is any mixing distribution on $\mathscr X$, then the mixture $\int P_x \, \mathrm{d} μ(x)$ satisfies a log-Sobolev inequality. In various settings of interest, the resulting log-Sobolev constant is dimension-free. In particular, our result implies a conjecture of Zimmermann and Bardet et al. that Gaussian convolutions of measures with bounded support enjoy dimension-free log-Sobolev inequalities.
We establish dual equivalent forms involving relative entropy, Fisher information and optimal transport costs of inverse Santal{ó} inequalities. We show in particular that the Mahler conjecture is equivalent to some dimensional lower bound on the deficit in the Gaussian logarithmic Sobolev inequality. We also derive from existing results on inverse Santal{ó} inequalities some sharp lower bounds on the deficit in the Gaussian logarithmic Sobolev inequality.
We study logarithmic Sobolev inequalities with respect to a heat kernel measure on finite-dimensional and infinite-dimensional Heisenberg groups. Such a group is the simplest non-trivial example of a sub-Riemannian manifold. First we consider logarithmic Sobolev inequalities on non-isotropic Heisenberg groups. These inequalities are considered with respect to the hypoelliptic heat kernel measure, and we show that the logarithmic Sobolev constants can be chosen to be independent of the dimension of the underlying space. In this setting, a natural Laplacian is not an elliptic but a hypoelliptic …
We refine and generalize several interpolation inequalities bounding the $L^p$ norm of a probability density with respect to the reference measure $μ$ by its Sobolev norm and the Kantorovich distance to $μ$ on a smooth weighted Riemannian manifold satisfying $CD(0, \infty)$ condition.
In this paper, we study some functional inequalities (such as Poincaré inequalities, logarithmic Sobolev inequalities, generalized Cheeger isoperimetric inequalities, transportation-information inequalities and transportation-entropy inequalities) for reversible nearest-neighbor Markov processes on a connected finite graph by means of (random) path method. We provide estimates of the involved constants.
We obtain new oscillation inequalities in metric spaces in terms of the Peetre $K-$functional and the isoperimetric profile. Applications provided include a detailed study of Fractional Sobolev inequalities and the Morrey-Sobolev embedding theorems in different contexts. In particular we include a detailed study of Gaussian measures as well as probablity measures between Gaussian and exponential. We show a kind of reverse Polya-Szego principle that allows us to obtain continuity as a self improvement from boundedness, using symetrization inequalities. Our methods also allow for precise estimat…
In this paper we introduce and study a weakened form of logarithmic Sobolev inequalities in connection with various others functional inequalities (weak Poincaré inequalities, general Beckner inequalities...). We also discuss the quantitative behaviour of relative entropy along a symmetric diffusion semi-group. In particular, we exhibit an example where Poincaré inequality can not be used for deriving entropic convergence whence weak logarithmic Sobolev inequality ensures the result.
We establish Sobolev type inequalities in the noncommutative settings by generalizing monotone metrics in the space of quantum states, such as matrix-valued Beckner inequalities. We also discuss examples such as random transpositions and Bernoulli-Laplace models.
We provide a sufficient condition for a measure on the real line to satisfy a modified logarithmic Sobolev inequality, thus extending the criterion of Bobkov and Götze. Under mild assumptions the condition is also necessary. Concentration inequalities are derived. This completes the picture given in recent contributions by Gentil, Guillin and Miclo.
We propose a new Borell-Brascamp-Lieb inequality which leads to novel sharp Euclidean inequalities such as Gagliardo-Nirenberg-Sobolev inequalities in R^n and in the half-space R^n\_+. This gives a new bridge between the geometric pont of view of the Brunn-Minkowski inequality and the functional point of view of the Sobolev type inequalities. In this way we unify, simplify and results by S. Bobkov-M. Ledoux, M. del Pino-J. Dolbeault and B. Nazaret.
We study limiting trace inequalities in the style of Maz'ya and Meyers--Ziemer for Sobolev martingales. We develop the Bellman function approach to such estimates, which allows to provide sufficient and almost necessary conditions on the martingale space and the martingale transform under which the trace inequalities hold true
Logarithmic Sobolev inequalities are a fundamental class of inequalities that play an important role in information theory. They play a key role in establishing concentration inequalities and in obtaining quantitative estimates on the convergence to equilibrium of Markov processes. More recently, deep links have been established between logarithmic Sobolev inequalities and strong data processing inequalities. In this paper we study logarithmic Sobolev inequalities from a computational point of view. We describe a hierarchy of semidefinite programming relaxations which give certified lower boun…
We prove the existence of an extremal function in the Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequality for the energy associated to an stable operator. To this aim we obtain a concentration-compactness principle for stable processes in $\mathbb{R}^N$.
The celebrated Otto calculus has established itself as a powerful tool for proving quantitative energy dissipation estimates and provides with an elegant geometric interpretation of certain functional inequalities such as the Logarithmic Sobolev inequality. However, the \emph{local} versions of such inequalities, which can be proven by means of Bakry-Emery-Ledoux $Γ$-calculus, has not yet been given an interpretation in terms of this Riemannian formalism. In this short note we close this gap by explaining how Otto calculus applied to the Schr{ö}dinger problem yields a variations interpretation…
We derive weighted log-Sobolev inequalities from a class of super Poincaré inequalities. As an application, the Talagrand inequality with larger distances are obtained. In particular, on a complete connected Riemannian manifold, we prove that the $\log^\dd$-Sobolev inequality with $\dd\in (1,2)$ implies the $L^{2/(2-\dd)}$-transportation cost inequality $$W^\rr_{2/(2-\dd)}(fμ,μ)^{2/(2-\dd)}\le Cμ(f\log f), μ(f)=1, f\ge 0$$ for some constant $C>0$, and they are equivalent if the curvature of the corresponding generator is bounded below. Weighted log-Sobolev and entropy-cost inequalities are als…
In this paper, we prove modified logarithmic Sobolev inequalities for canonical ensembles with superquadratic single-site potential. These inequalities were introduced by Bobkov and Ledoux, and are closely related to concentration of measure and transport-entropy inequalities. Our method is an adaptation of the iterated two-scale approach that was developed by Menz and Otto to prove the usual logarithmic Sobolev inequality in this context. As a consequence, we obtain convergence in Wasserstein distance $W_p$ for Kawasaki dynamics on the Ginzburg-Landau model.
