CaFe$_2$As$_2$ has been found to be exceptionally sensitive to the application of hydrostatic pressure and superconductivity has been found to exist in a narrow pressure region that appears to be at the interface between two different phase transitions. The pressure - temperature ($P - T$) phase diagram of CaFe$_2$As$_2$ reveals that this stoichiometric, highly ordered, compound can be easily tuned to reveal all the salient features associated with FeAs-based superconductivity without introducing any disorder. Whereas at ambient pressure CaFe$_2$As$_2$ does not superconduct for $T > 1.8$ K and manifests a first order structural phase transition near $T \approx 170$ K, the application of $\sim 5$ kbar hydrostatic pressure fully suppresses the resistive signature of the structural phase transition and instead superconductivity is detected for $T < 12$ K. For $P \ge 5.5$ kbar a different transition is detected, one associated with a clear reduction in resistivity and for $P > 8.6$ kbar superconductivity is no longer detected. This higher pressure transition temperature increases rapidly with increasing pressure, exceeding 300 K by $P \sim 17$ kbar. The low temperature, superconducting dome is centered around 5 kbar, extending down to 2.3 kbar and up to 8.6 kbar. This superconducting phase appears to exist when the low pressure transition is suppressed sufficiently, but before the high pressure transition has reduced the resistivity, and possibly the associated fluctuations, too dramatically.
We present detailed electronic structure calculations for CaFe2As2. We investigate in particular the `collapsed' tetragonal and orthorhombic regions of the temperature-pressure phase diagram and find properties that distinguish CaFe2As2 from other Fe-pnictide compounds. In contrast to the tetragonal phase of other Fe-pnictides the electronic structure in the `collapsed' tetragonal phase of CaFe2As2 is found to be strongly 3D. We discuss the influence of these properties on the formation of superconductivity and in particular we find evidence that both magnetic and lattice interactions may be i…
Recent high-pressure studies found that superconductivity can be achieved under very low pressure in the parent iron arsenide compound CaFe2As2, although details of the sharpness and temperature of transitions vary between liquid medium and gas medium measurements. To better understand this issue, we performed high-pressure susceptibility and transport studies on CaFe2As2, using helium as the pressure medium. The signatures of the transitions to the low-temperature orthorhombic and collapsed tetragonal phase remained exceptionally sharp and no signature of bulk superconductivity was found unde…
We report pressure-induced superconductivity in a single crystal of CaFe2As2. At atmospheric pressure, this material is antiferromagnetic below 170 K but under an applied pressure of 0.69 GPa becomes superconducting, with a transition temperature Tc exceeding 10 K. The rate of Tc suppression with applied magnetic field is -0.7 K/T, giving an extrapolated zero-temperature upper critical field of 10-14T.
The SrFe2As2-xPx and CaFe2As2-yPy materials were prepared by a solid state reaction method. X-ray diffraction measurements indicate the single-phase samples can be successfully obtained for SrFe2As2-xPx and CaFe2As2-yPy samples. Clear contraction of the lattice parameters are clearly determined due to the relatively smaller P ions substation for As. The SDW instability associated with tetragonal to orthorhombic phase transition is suppressed visibly in both systems following with the increase of P contents. The highest superconducting transitions are respectively observed at about 27 K in SrFe…
We predict that CaFeAs$_2$, a newly discovered iron-based high temperature (T$_c$) superconductor, is a staggered intercalation compound that integrates topological quantum spin hall (QSH) and superconductivity (SC). CaFeAs$_2$ has a structure with staggered CaAs and FeAs layers. While the FeAs layers are known to be responsible for high T$_c$ superconductivity, we show that with spin orbital coupling each CaAs layer is a $Z_{2}$ topologically nontrivial two-dimensional QSH insulator and the bulk is a 3-dimensional weak topological insulator. In the superconducting state, the edge states in th…
We studied the effect of hydrostatic pressure (P) on the structural phase transitions and superconductivity in the ternary and pseudo-ternary iron arsenides CaFe2As2, BaFe2As2, and (Ba0.55K0.45)Fe2As2, by means of measurements of electrical resistivity (rho) in the 1.8 - 300 K temperature (T) range, pressures up to 20 kbar, and magnetic fields up to 9 T. CaFe2As2 and BaFe2As2 (lightly doped with Sn) display structural phase transitions near 170 K and 85 K, respectively, and do not exhibit superconductivity in ambient pressure, while K-doped (Ba0.55K0.45)Fe2As2 is superconducting for T < 30 K. …
75As-zero-field nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements are performed on CaFe2As2 under pressure. At P = 4.7 and 10.8 kbar, the temperature dependences of nuclear-spin-lattice relaxation rate (1/T1) measured in the tetragonal phase show no coherence peak just below Tc(P) and decrease with decreasing temperature. The superconductivity is gapless at P = 4.7 kbar but evolves to that with multiple gaps at P = 10.8 kbar. We find that the superconductivity appears near a quantum critical point under pressures in the range 4.7 kbar < P < 10.8 kbar. Both el…
Resistivity, magnetization and microscopic $^{75}$As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements in the antiferromagnetically ordered state of the iron-based superconductor parent material CaFe$_2$As$_2$ exhibit anomalous features that are consistent with the collective freezing of domain walls. Below $T^*\approx 10$ K, the resistivity exhibits a peak and downturn, the bulk magnetization exhibits a sharp increase, and $^{75}$As NMR measurements reveal the presence of slow fluctuations of the hyperfine field. These features in both the charge and spin response are strongly field dependent, ar…
The effects of pressure generated in a liquid medium, clamp, pressure cell on the in-plane and c-axis resistance, temperature-dependent Hall coefficient and low temperature, magnetoresistance in CaFe2As2 are presented. The T - P phase diagram, including the observation of a complete superconducting transition in resistivity, delineated in earlier studies is found to be highly reproducible. The Hall resistivity and low temperature magnetoresistance are sensitive to different states/phases observed in CaFe2As2. Auxiliary measurements under uniaxial, c-axis, pressure are in general agreement with…
The difference in thermal stability of F- and H- in 1111-type iron based superconductors, allows selective hydrogen elimination from non-superconductive CaFeAsF0.8H0.2 by thermal annealing. The analyzed chemical composition of the resulting samples indicates that incorporated hydrogen was selectively eliminated by thermal annealing at 553 K for 72 hours. The resulting hydrogen-eliminated sample shows bulk superconductivity with Tc = 29 K. This technique may be used for indirect electron doping for AeFeAeF (Ae; alkali-earth metal) iron based superconductor described by CaFeAsF1-xHx => CaFeAsF1-…
CaFe2As2 single crystals under uniaxial pressure applied along the c axis exhibit the coexistence of several structural phases at low temperatures. We show that the room-temperature tetragonal phase is stabilized at low temperatures for pressures above 0.06 GPa, and its weight fraction attains a maximum in the region where superconductivity is observed under applied uniaxial pressure. Simultaneous resistivity measurements strongly suggest that this phase is responsible for the superconductivity in CaFe2As2 found below 10 K in samples subjected to nonhydrostatic pressure conditions.
The relationship between antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations and superconductivity has become a central topic of research in studies of superconductivity in the iron pnictides. We present unambiguous evidence of the absence of magnetic fluctuations in the non-superconducting collapsed tetragonal phase of CaFe2As2 via inelastic neutron scattering time-of-flight data, which is consistent with the view that spin fluctuations are a necessary ingredient for unconventional superconductivity in the iron pnictides. We demonstrate that the collapsed tetragonal phase of CaFe2As2 is non-magnetic, and dis…
Co-doping of lanthanum and phosphorus in CaFe2As2 induces superconductivity at 45 K. This superconducting transition temperature is higher than the 38 K transition in Ba1-xKxFe2As2, which is the maximum found thus far among the 122 phases. Superconductivity with a substantial shielding volume fraction was observed at 0.12 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 0.18 and y = 0.06 in Ca1-xLaxFe2(As1-yPy)2. The superconducting phase of the present system seems to be not adjacent to an antiferromagnetic phase.
We report $^{75}$As NMR measurements in CaFe$_2$As$_2$, made under applied pressures up to 0.83 GPa produced by a standard clamp pressure cell. Our data reveal phase segregation of paramagnetic (PM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) phases over a range of pressures, with the AFM phase more than 90 % dominant at low temperatures. In situ RF susceptibility measurements indicate the presence of superconductivity. $^{75}$As spin-lattice relaxation experiments indicate that the $^{75}$As nuclei sample the superconductivity while in the magnetically-ordered environment.
We report specific-heat and resistivity experiments performed in parallel in a Bridgman-type of pressure cell in order to investigate the nature of pressure-induced superconductivity in the iron pnictide compound CaFe2As2. The presence of a pronounced specific-heat anomaly at Tc reveals a bulk nature of the superconducting state. The thermodynamic transition temperature differs dramatically from the onset of the resistive transition. Our data indicates that superconductivity occurs in the vicinity of a crystallographic phase transition. We discuss the discrepancy between the two methods as cau…
Recent investigations of the superconducting iron-arsenide families have highlighted the role of pressure, be it chemical or mechanical, in fostering superconductivity. Here we report that CaFe2As2 undergoes a pressure-induced transition to a non-magnetic, volume "collapsed" tetragonal phase, which becomes superconducting at lower temperature. Spin-polarized total-energy calculations on the collapsed structure reveal that the magnetic Fe moment itself collapses, consistent with the absence of magnetic order in neutron diffraction.
We have successfully synthesized the fluoride-arsenide compounds Ca$_{1-x}$RE$_x$FeAsF (RE=Nd, Pr; x=0, 0.6). The x-ray powder diffraction confirmed that the main phases of our samples are Ca$_{1-x}$RE$_x$FeAsF with the ZrCuSiAs structure. By measuring resistivity, superconductivity was observed at 57.4 K in Nd-doped and 52.8 K in Pr-doped samples with x=0.6. Bulk superconductivity was also proved by the DC magnetization measurements in both samples. Hall effect measurements revealed hole-like charge carriers in the parent compound CaFeAsF with a clear resistivity anomaly below 118 K, while th…
The interplay between structural phase and electronic correlations has been an intriguing topic of research. An prominent example is the pressure-induced uncollapsed to collapsed tetragonal phase transition observed in CaFe$_2$As$_2$, which is accompanied with the emergence of superconductivity in the collapsed phase. Recently, a very similar structural phase transition was discovered in LaFe$_2$As$_2$, but in contrast to CaFe$_2$As$_2$, superconductivity was only observed in the uncollapsed phase, not the collapsed phase. Previous studies have attributed this puzzling observation to the diffe…
Ca(Fe$_{1-x}$Rh$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ undergoes successive phase transitions with increasing Rh doping in the $T$ $=$ 0 limit. The antiferromagnetic-metal phase with orthorhombic structure at 0.00 $\le$ $x$ $\le$ 0.020 is driven to a superconducting phase with uncollapsed-tetragonal (ucT) structure at 0.020 $\le$ $x$ $\le$ 0.024; a non-superconducting collapsed-tetragonal (cT) phase takes over at $x$ $\geq$ 0.024. The breakdown of Fermi-liquid transport is observed in the ucT phase above $T_{\rm c}$. In the adjacent cT phase, Fermi-liquid transport is restored along with a disappearance of supercondu…
The antiferromagnet CaFe$_2$As$_2$ does not become superconducting when subject to ideal hydrostatic pressure conditions, where crystallographic and magnetic states also are well defined. By measuring electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility under quasi-hydrostatic pressure, however, we find that a substantial volume fraction of the sample is superconducting in a narrow pressure range where collapsed tetragonal and orthorhombic structures coexist. At higher pressures, the collapsed tetragonal structure is stabilized, with the boundary between this structure and the phase of coexistin…
High-pressure superconductivity in a rare-earth doped Ca0.86Pr0.14Fe2As2 single crystalline sample has been studied up to 12 GPa and temperatures down to 11 K using designer diamond anvil cell under a quasi-hydrostatic pressure medium. The electrical resistance measurements were complemented by high pressure and low temperature x-ray diffraction studies at a synchrotron source. The electrical resistance measurements show an intriguing observation of superconductivity under pressure, with Tc as high as ~51 K at 1.9 GPa, presenting the highest Tc reported in the intermetallic class of 1-2-2 iron…
We use multi-scale techniques to determine the extent of local inhomogeneity and superconductivity in Ca$_{0.86}$Pr$_{0.14}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ single crystal. The inhomogeneity is manifested as a spatial variation of praseodymium concentration, local density of states, and superconducting order parameter. We show that the high-$T_{c}$ superconductivity emerges from clover-like defects associated with Pr dopants. The highest $T_{c}$ is observed in both the tetragonal and collapsed tetragonal phases, and its filamentary nature is a consequence of non-uniform Pr distribution that develops localized…
Single crystals of undoped CaFe2As2 were grown by a FeAs self-flux method, and the crystals were quenched in ice-water rapidly after high temperature growth. The quenched crystal undergoes a collapsed tetragonal structural phase transition around 80 K revealed by the temperature dependent X-ray diffraction measurements. Superconductivity below 25 K was observed in the collapsed phase by resistivity and magnetization measurements. The isothermal magnetization curve measured at 2 K indicates that this is a typical type-II superconductor. For comparison, we systematically characterized the proper…
At ambient pressure CaFe2As2 has been found to undergo a first order phase transition from a high temperature, tetragonal phase to a low temperature orthorhombic / antiferromagnetic phase upon cooling through T ~ 170 K. With the application of pressure this phase transition is rapidly suppressed and by ~ 0.35 GPa it is replaced by a first order phase transition to a low temperature collapsed tetragonal, non-magnetic phase. Further application of pressure leads to an increase of the tetragonal to collapsed tetragonal phase transition temperature, with it crossing room temperature by ~ 1.7 GPa. …
We performed nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements to investigate the evolution of spin-density-wave (SDW) and superconducting (SC) states upon electron doping in CaFe_{1-x}Co_{x}AsF, which exhibits an intermediate phase diagram between those of LaFeAsO_{1-x}F_x and Ba(Fe_{1-x}Co_x)_2As_2. We found that homogeneous coexistence of the incommensurate SDW and SC states occurs only in a narrow doping region around the crossover regime, which supports S_{+-}-wave symmetry. However, only the structural phase transition survives upon further doping, which agrees with predictions from orbital …
We examined doping effect of 3d transition metal elements (TM: Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, and Cu) at the Fe site of a quaternary fluoroarsenide CaFeAsF, an analogue of 1111-type parent compound LaFeAsO. The anomaly at ~120 K observed in resistivity (rho) vs. temperature (T) plot for the parent compound is suppressed by the doping of each TM element. Furthermore, Co- and Ni-doping (CaFe1-xTMxAsF, TM = Co, Ni) induces superconductivity with a transition temperature maximized at the nominal x = 0.10 for Co (22 K) and at x = 0.05 for Ni (12 K). These optimal doping levels may be understood by considering tha…
In this paper we report the synthesis of iron-based superconductors CaFe2-xRhxAs2 using one-step solid state reaction method, which crystallizes in the ThCr2Si2-type structure with a space group I4/mmm. The systematic evolution of the lattice constants demonstrates that the Fe ions are successfully replaced by the Rh. By increasing the doping content of Rh, the spin-density-wave (SDW) transition in the parent compound is suppressed and superconductivity emerges. The maximum superconducting transition temperature is found at 18.5 K with the doping level of x = 0.15. The temperature dependence o…
The presence of macroscopic phase separation between the superconducting and magnetic phases in \cfcaf is demonstrated by muon spin rotation (muSR) measurements conducted across their phase boundaries (x=0.05-0.15). The magnetic phase tends to retain the high transition temperature (T_m > T_c), while Co-doping induces strong randomness. The volumetric fraction of superconducting phase is nearly proportional to the Co content $x$ with constant superfluid density. These observations suggest the formation of superconducting "islands" (or domains) associated with Co ions in the Fe$_2$As$_2$ layers…
Quantum transitions in Fe-based systems are believed to involve spin, charge and nematic fluctuations. Complex structural phase diagram in these materials often emphasizes importance of covalency in their exotic properties, which is directly linked to the local structural network and barely understood. In order to address this outstanding issue, we investigate the evolution of structural parameters and their implication in unconventional superconductivity of 122 class of materials employing extended x-ray absorption fine structure studies. The spectral functions near the Fe K- and As K-absorpt…
The temperature-dependence of the in-plane optical properties of (CaFe$_{1-x}$Pt$_{x}$As)$_{10}$Pt$_{3}$As$_{8}$ have been investigated for the undoped ($x=$0) parent compound, and the optimally-doped ($x=$0.1) superconducting material ($T_{c}\simeq$ 12 K) over a wide frequency range. The optical conductivity has been described using two free-carrier (Drude) components, in combination with oscillators to describe interband transitions. At room temperature, the parent compound may be described by a strong, broad Drude term, as well as a narrow, weaker Drude component. Below the structural and m…
Gap symmetry and structure are crucial issues in understanding the superconducting mechanism of unconventional superconductors. Here we report an in-depth investigation on the out-of-plane lower critical field $H_{c1}^{c}$ of fluorine-based 1111 system superconductor CaFe$_{0.88}$Co$_{0.12}$AsF with $T_c$ = 21 K. A pronounced two-gap feature is revealed by the kink in the temperature dependent $H_{c1}^c(T)$ curve. The magnitudes of the two gaps are determined to be $Δ_1$ = 0.86 meV and $Δ_2$ = 4.48 meV, which account for 74% and 26% of the total superfluid density respectively. Our results sug…
Recent studies reveal a pressure induced transition from a paramagnetic tetragonal phase (T) to a collapsed tetragonal phase (CT) in $CaFe_2As_2$, which was found to be superconducting with non-hydrostatic pressure at low temperature. We have investigated the effects of electron correlation and local fluctuating moment in both tetragonal and collapsed tetragonal phases of the paramagnetic $CaFe_2As_2$ using self consistent DFT+DMFT with continuous time quantum Monte Carlo as the impurity solver. From the computed optical conductivity, we find a gain in the optical kinetic energy due to the los…
Single crystal neutron and high-energy x-ray diffraction have identified the phase lines corresponding to transitions between the ambient-pressure tetragonal (T), the antiferromagnetic orthorhombic (O) and the non-magnetic collapsed tetragonal (cT) phases of CaFe2As2. We find no evidence of additional structures for pressures up to 2.5 GPa (at 300 K). Both the T-cT and O-cT transitions exhibit significant hysteresis effects and we demonstrate that coexistence of the O and cT phases can occur if a non-hydrostatic component of pressure is present. Measurements of the magnetic diffraction peaks s…
The recent discovery and subsequent developments of FeAs-based superconductors have presented novel challenges and opportunities in the quest for superconducting mechanisms in correlated-electron systems. Central issues of ongoing studies include interplay between superconductivity and magnetism as well as the nature of the pairing symmetry reflected in the superconducting energy gap. In the cuprate and RE(O,F)FeAs (RE = rare earth) systems, the superconducting phase appears without being accompanied by static magnetic order, except for narrow phase-separated regions at the border of phase bou…
We performed point-contact Andreev reflection spectroscopy measurements in Ca(Fe_{1-x}Co_x)2As2 single crystals with effective x=0.060 +- 0.005. The spectra of ab-plane contacts show a zero-bias maximum and broad shoulders at about 5-6 meV. Their fit with the three-dimensional Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk model (making use of a analytical expression for the Fermi surface that mimics the one calculated from first principles) shows that this compound presents a large isotropic gap on the quasi-2D electronlike Fermi surface sheets and a smaller anisotropic (possibly nodal) gap on the 3D holelike Ferm…
We perform first principles calculations on CaFe2As2 under hydrostatic pressure. Our total energy calculations show that though the striped antiferromagnetic (AFM) orthorhombic (OR) phase is favored at P=0, a non-magnetic collapsed tetragonal (cT) phase with diminished c-parameter is favored for P > 0.36 GPa, in agreement with experiments. Rather than a mechanical instability, this is an enthalpically driven transition from the higher volume OR phase to the lower volume cT phase. Calculations of electronic density of states reveal pseudogaps in both OR and cT phases, though As(p) hybridization…
In CaFe2As2, superconductivity can be achieved by applying a modest c-axis pressure of several kbar. Here we use scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/S) to explore the STM tip pressure effect on single crystals of CaFe2As2. When performing STM/S measurements, the tip-sample interaction can be controlled to act repulsive with reduction of the junction resistance, thus to apply a tip pressure on the sample. We find that an incoherent energy gap emerges at the Fermi level in the differential conductance spectrum when the tip pressure is increased. This energy gap is of the similar orde…
We report the synthesis and basic physical properties of single crystals of CaFe2As2, an isostructural compound to BaFe2As2 which has been recently doped to produce superconductivity. CaFe2As2 crystalizes in the ThCr2Si2 structure with lattice parameters a = 3.907(4) A and c = 11.69(2) A. Magnetic susceptibility, resistivity, and heat capacity all show a first order phase transition at T_0 171 K. The magnetic susceptibility is nearly isotropic from 2 K to 350 K. The heat capacity data gives a Sommerfeld coefficient of 8.2 +- 0.3 mJ/molK2, and does not reveal any evidence for the presence of hi…
Inelastic neutron scattering measurements of CaFe2As2 under applied hydrostatic pressure show that the antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations observed in the ambient pressure, paramagnetic, tetragonal (T) phase are strongly suppressed, if not absent, in the collapsed tetragonal (cT) phase. These results are consistent with a quenched Fe moment in the cT phase and the strong decrease in resistivity observed upon crossing the boundary from the T to cT phase. The suppression or absence of static antiferromagnetic order and dynamic spin fluctuations in the non-superconducting cT phase supports the no…
We report systematic investigation of high pressure crystal structures and structural phase transition upto 46 GPa in CaFeAsF and 40 GPa in SrFeAsF at 40 K using powder synchrotron x-ray diffraction experiments and Rietveld analysis of the diffraction data. We find that CaFeAsF undergoes orthorhombic to monoclinic phase transition at Pc = 13.7 GPa while increasing pressure. SrFeAsF exhibits coexistence of orthorhombic and monoclinic phases over a large pressure range from 9 to 39 GPa. The coexistence of the two phases indicates that the transition is of first order in nature. Unlike in the 122…
Single crystals of Ca(Fe1-xRux)2As2 (0<x<0.065) and Ca1-yLay(Fe0.973Ru0.027)2As2 (0<y<0.2) have been synthesized and studied with respect to their structural, electronic and magnetic properties. The partial substitution of Fe by Ru induces a decrease of the c-axis constant leading for x<0.023 to a suppression of the coupled magnetic and structural (tetragonal to orthorhombic) transitions. At x_cr=0.023 a first order transition to a collapsed tetragonal (CT) phase is found, which behaves like a Fermi liquid and which is stabilized by further increase of x. The absence of superconductivity near …
Iron-based superconductors Ba0.7Rb0.3Fe2As2 and CaFe1.92Co0.08As2 of the '122' family have been investigated by means of the 14.41-keV Moessbauer transition in 57Fe versus temperature ranging from the room temperature till 4.2 K. A comparison is made with the previously investigated parent compounds BaFe2As2 and CaFe2As2. It has been found that Moessbauer spectra of these superconductors are composed of the magnetically split component due to development of spin density wave (SDW) and non-magnetic component surviving even at lowest temperatures. The latter component is responsible for supercon…
We report the detection of unusual superconductivity up to 49 K in single crystalline CaFe2As2 via electron-doping by partial replacement of Ca by rare-earth. The superconducting transition observed suggests the possible existence of two phases: one starting at ~ 49 K, which has a low critical field ~ 4 Oe, and the other at ~ 21 K, with a much higher critical field > 5 T. Our observations are in strong contrast to previous reports of doping or pressurizing layered compounds AeFe2As2 (or Ae122), where Ae = Ca, Sr or Ba. In Ae122, hole-doping has been previously observed to generate superconduct…
Starting from the orthorhombic magnetically ordered phase, we investigate the effects of uniaxial tensile and compressive stresses along a, b, and the diagonal a+b directions in BaFe2As2 and CaFe2As2 in the framework of ab initio density functional theory (DFT) and a phenomonological Ginzburg-Landau model. While -contrary to the application of hydrostatic or c-axis uniaxial pressure- both systems remain in the orthorhombic phase with a pressure-dependent nonzero magnetic moment, we observe a sign-changing jump in the orthorhombicity at a critical uniaxial pressure, accompanied by a reversal of…
A Neutron Powder Diffraction (NPD) experiment has been performed to investigate the structural phase transition and magnetic order in CaFe1-xCoxAsF superconductor compounds (x = 0, 0.06, 0.12). The parent compound CaFeAsF undergoes a tetragonal to orthorhombic phase transition at 134(3) K, while the magnetic order in form of a spin-density wave (SDW) sets in at 114(3) K. The antiferromagnetic structure of the parent compound has been determined with a unique propagation vector k = (1,0,1) and the Fe saturation moment of 0.49(5)uB aligned along the long a-axis. With increasing Co doping, the lo…
The static and the dynamic spin correlations in the low temperature collapsed tetragonal and the high temperature tetragonal phase in CaFe2As2 have been investigated by 75As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements. Through the temperature (T) dependence of the nuclear spin lattice relaxation rates (1/T1) and the Knight shifts, although stripe-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin correlations are realized in the high temperature tetragonal phase, no trace of the AFM spin correlations can be found in the non-superconducting, low temperature, collapsed te…
Recently discovered (CaFe$_{1-x}$Pt$_x$As)$_{10}$Pt$_3$As$_8$ and (CaFeAs)$_{10}$Pt$_{4-y}$As$_8$ superconductors are very similar materials having the same elemental composition and structurally similar superconducting FeAs slabs. Yet the maximal critical temperature achieved by changing Pt concentration is approximately twice higher in the latter. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy(ARPES) we compare the electronic structure of their optimally doped compounds and find drastic differences. Our results highlight the sensitivity of critical temperature to the details of fermiology a…
The effects of simultaneous Sb doping on the superconductivity of 112-type Ca1-xRExFeAs2 (RE = La, Ce, Pr, and Nd) were studied through measurements of the magnetization and electrical resistivity. In Sb-free materials, the superconducting transition temperature Tc of the La-doped sample was 35 K, while those of the Pr- and Nd-doped samples were ~10 K; no superconductivity was observed in the Ce-doped sample. Sb doping increased the Tc of all RE-doped samples: Tc increased to 47, 43, 43, and 43 K for RE = La, Ce, Pr, and Nd, respectively. We also found that the enhanced superconductivity resul…
We present a detailed study of the combined effects of Sr substitution and hydrostatic pressure on the ground-state properties of CaFe$_2$As$_2$. Measurements of the electrical resistance and magnetic susceptibility, both at ambient and finite pressure $P$ $\leq$ 2$\,$GPa, were performed on Ca$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals grown out of Sn flux. We find that upon Sr substitution the ranges of stability of both the structural-magnetic transition and the transition into the non-magnetic collapsed tetragonal phase are shifted to higher pressure levels with the latter moving at a higher…
Iron-based compounds (IBS) display a surprising variety of superconducting properties that seems to arise from the strong sensitivity of these systems to tiny details of the lattice structure. In this respect, systems that become superconducting under pressure, like CaFe$_2$As$_2$, are of particular interest. Here we report on the first directional point-contact Andreev-reflection spectroscopy (PCARS) measurements on CaFe$_2$As$_2$ crystals under quasi-hydrostatic pressure, and on the interpretation of the results using a 3D model for Andreev reflection combined with ab-initio calculations of …
We report anisotropic dc magnetic susceptibility $χ(T)$, electrical resistivity $ρ(T)$, and heat capacity $C(T)$ measurements on the single crystals of CaFe$_{2-x}$Co$_x$As$_2$ for $x$ = 0 and 0.06. Large sized single crystals were grown by the high temperature solution method with Sn as the solvent. For the pure compound with $x$ = 0, a high temperature transition at 170 K is observed which is attributed to a combined spin density wave (SDW) ordering and a structural phase transition. On the other hand, for the Co-doped samples for $x$ = 0.06, the SDW transition is suppressed while supercondu…
We report high pressure powder synchrotron x-ray diffraction studies on MFe2As2 (M=Ba, Ca) over a range of temperatures and pressures up to about 56 GPa using a membrane diamond anvil cell. A phase transition to a collapsed tetragonal phase is observed in both compounds upon compression. However, at 300 (33) K in the Ba-compound the transition occurs at 26 (29) GPa, which is a much higher pressure than 1.7 (0.3) GPa at 300 (40) K in the Ca-compound, due to its larger volume. It is important to note that the transition in both compounds occurs when they are compressed to almost the same value o…
Magnetization, susceptibility, specific heat, resistivity, neutron and x-ray diffraction have been used to characterize the properties of single crystalline CaFe2-xNixAs2 as a function of Ni doping for x varying from 0 to 0.1. The combined first-order structural and magnetic phase transitions occur together in the undoped system at 172 K, with a small decrease in the area of the a-b plane along with an abrupt increase in the length of the c-axis in the orthorhombic phase. With increasing x the ordered moment and transition temperature decrease, but the transition remains sharp at modest doping…
Fe-based superconductors have drawn much attention during the last decade due to the finding of superconductivity in materials containing the magnetic element, Fe, and the coexistence of superconductivity & magnetism. Extensive study of the electronic structure of these systems suggested dominant role of d states in their electronic properties, whereas the cuprate superconductors show major role of the ligand derived states. In this article, we review some of our results on the electronic structure of these fascinating systems employing high resolution photoemission spectroscopy. The combined …
We report a systematic and ab-initio electronic structure calculation of Ca0.75 M0.25 Fe2 As2 with M = Ca, Sr, Eu, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Pm, Sm, Na, K, Rb. The recently reported experimentally observed structural trends in rare earths-doped CaFe2 As2 compounds are successfully predicted and a complete theoretical description of the pressure induced orthorhombic to collapsed tetragonal transition is given. We demonstrate that the transition pressure is reduced by electron doping and rises linearly with the ionic size of the dopants. We discuss the implications of our description for the realization o…
Single crystalline CaFe2As2 and (Ca1-xNax)Fe2As2 polycrystals (0 < x < 0.66) are synthesized and characterized using structural, magnetic, electronic transport, and heat capacity measurements. These measurements show that the structural/magnetic phase transition in CaFe2As2 at 165 K is monotonically suppressed by the Na doping and that superconductivity can be realized over a wide doping region. For 0.3 < x < 0.36, the magnetic susceptibilities indicate the possible coexistence of the spin density wave (SDW) and superconductivity. Superconducting phases corresponding to the Na doping level in …
We report the pressure and temperature dependence of the phonon density-of-states in superconducting Ca0.6Na0.4Fe2As2 (Tc=21 K) and the parent compound CaFe2As2, using inelastic neutron scattering. We observe no significant change in the phonon spectrum for Ca0.6Na0.4Fe2As2 at 295 K up to pressures of 5 kbar. The phonon spectrum for CaFe2As2 shows softening of the low-energy modes by about 1 meV when decreasing the temperature from 300 K to 180 K. There is no appreciable change in the phonon density of states across the structural and anti-ferromagnetic phase transition at 172 K. These results…
The pressure dependence of a large number of phonon modes in CaFe2As2 with energies covering the full range of the phonon spectrum has been studied using inelastic x-ray and neutron scattering. The observed phonon frequency changes are in general rather small despite the sizable changes of the lattice parameters at the phase transition. This indicates that the bonding properties are not profoundly altered by the phase transition. The transverse acoustic phonons propagating along the c-direction are an exception because they stiffen very significantly in response to the large contraction of the…
Superconductivity in Iron-Arsenic based pnictides emerges in close proximity to an antiferromagnetic (AFM)ordered parent state and the AFM phase overlaps with superconducting (SC) phase in some pnictides for certain range of doping. CaFe2-xNixAs2 belongs to this category, where both the phases overlap. Here we use scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy to investigate the local electronic properties of uderdoped CaFe1.96Ni0.04As2 single crystals in the vicinity of the boundary of the two phases. Both resistivity and magnetic measurements show that a tiny portion (~ 1.2 %) of this compou…
In this paper we report the superconductivity above 40 K in the electron doping single crystal Ca1-xRexFe2As2 (Re = La, Ce, Pr). The x-ray diffraction patterns indicate high crystalline quality and c-axis orientation. the resistivity anomaly in the parent compound CaFe2As2 is completely suppressed by partial replacement of Ca by rare earth and a superconducting transition reaches as high as 43 K, which is higher than the value in electron doping FeAs-122 compounds by substituting Fe ions with transition metal, even surpasses the highest values observed in hole doping systems with a transition …
