Quantum transitions in Fe-based systems are believed to involve spin, charge and nematic fluctuations. Complex structural phase diagram in these materials often emphasizes importance of covalency in their exotic properties, which is directly linked to the local structural network and barely understood. In order to address this outstanding issue, we investigate the evolution of structural parameters and their implication in unconventional superconductivity of 122 class of materials employing extended x-ray absorption fine structure studies. The spectral functions near the Fe K- and As K-absorption edge of CaFe2As2 and its superconducting composition, CaFe1.9Co0.1As2 (Tc = 12 K) exhibit evidence of enhancement of Fe contribution with Co-substitution near the Fermi level. As-Fe and Fe-Fe bondlengths derived from the experimental data exhibit interesting changes with temperature across the magneto-structural transition. Curiously, the evolution in Co-doped composition is similar to its parent compound despite absence of magneto-structural transition. In addition, we discover anomalous change of Ca-X (X = Fe, As) bondlengths with temperature in the vicinity of magneto-structural transition and disorder appears to be less important presumably due to screening by the charge reservoir layer. These results reveal evidence of doping induced evolution to the proximity to critical behavior presumably leading to superconductivity in the system.
Due to the non-trivial topological band structure in type-II Weyl semimetal Tungsten ditelluride (WTe2), unconventional properties may emerge in its superconducting phase. While realizing intrinsic superconductivity has been challenging in the type-II Weyl semimetal WTe2, proximity effect may open an avenue for the realization of superconductivity. Here, we report the observation of proximity-induced superconductivity with a long coherence length along c axis in WTe2 thin flakes based on a WTe2/NbSe2 van der Waals heterostructure. Interestingly, we also observe anomalous oscillations of the di…
In this paper, pressure effect on superconductivity and magnetism has been investigated in FeSex (x = 0.80, 0.88). The magnetization curves display anomaly at Ts1 106 K and Ts2 78 K except for the superconducting diamagnetic transition around Tc 8 K. The magnetic anomaly at Ts1 and Ts2 can be related to a ferromagnetic and an antiferromagnetic phase transition, respectively, as revealed by specific heat measurements. The application of pressure not only raises Tc, but also increases both Ts1 and Ts2. This system shows clear evidence that superconductivity arises in a phase with strong magnetic…
Making use of generalized Eliashberg equations, we describe the Altshuler-Aronov (AA) effect and superconductivity on equal footing. We derive explicit expressions for the Coulomb pseudopotential in 3D, taking into account also the anomalous diffusion. We present a full numerical solution for two normal-state and two anomalous self-energies. In the normal state, we amend the known results for the purely electronic AA effect; with electron-phonon coupling turned on, we find additional anomalies in the density of states close to the phonon energy. We study how the critical temperature and densit…
By measuring the temperature dependence of the resistance, we investigated the effect of Cu doping on superconductivity (SC) in Cu-doped TaSe$_3$ in which the charge density wave (CDW) transition is induced by Cu doping. We observed an emergence of a region where the SC transition temperature ($T_\mathrm{C}$) decreased in samples with higher Cu concentrations and found that the region tended to expand with increasing Cu concentration. In addition, the temperature dependence of the upper critical field ($H_\mathrm{C2}$) of Cu-doped TaSe$_3$ was found to differ from that of pure TaSe$_3$. Based …
Undoped LaFeAsO, parent compound of the newly found high-Tc superconductor, exhibits a sharp decrease in the temperature-dependent resistivity at ~160 K. The anomaly can be suppressed by F doping and the superconductivity appears correspondingly, suggesting a close associate of the anomaly with the superconductivity. We examined the crystal structures, magnetic properties and superconductivity of undoped (normal conductor) and 14 at.% F-doped LaFeAsO (Tc = 20 K) by synchrotron X-ray diffraction, DC magnetic measurements, and ab initio calculations to demonstrate that the anomaly is associated …
The structural evolution and superconductivity of a 122-type solid solution Sr1-xBaxNi2P2 were studied. We found that an orthorhombic-tetragonal structural phase transition takes place at x = 0.5, and is characterized by the P-P dimers breaking. The superconducting transition temperature exhibited its highest value of 2.85 K at x = 0.4.
The physical properties and structural evolution of the MX$_2$-type solid solution Au$_{1-x}$Pd$_x$Te$_2$ are reported. The end member AuTe$_2$ is a normal metal with a monoclinic distorted CdI$_2$-type structure with preformed Te-Te dimers. A monoclinic--trigonal structural phase transition at a finite temperature occurs upon Pd substitution and is suppressed to zero temperature near $x$ = 0.55, and a superconducting phase with a maximum $T_{\rm c}$ = 4.65 K emerges. A clear indication of strong coupling superconductivity is observed near the composition of the structural instability. The com…
A series of layered (Sr$_{1-x}$K$_x$)Fe$_2$As$_2$ compounds with nominal x=0 to 0.40 are synthesized by solid state reaction method. Similar to other parent compounds of iron-based pnictide superconductors, the pure SrFe$_2$As$_2$ shows a strong resistivity anomaly near 210 K, which was ascribed to the spin-density-wave instability. The anomaly temperature is much higher than those observed in LaOFeAs and BaFe$_2$As$_2$, the two prototype parent compounds with ZrCuSiAs- and ThCr$_2$Si$_2$-type structures. K-doping strongly suppresses this anomaly and induces superconductivity. Like in the case…
We performed an extensive investigation on the correlations among superconductivity, structural instability and band filling in Nb1-xB2 materials. Structural measurements reveal that a notable phase transformation occurs at x=0.2, corresponding to the Fermi level (EF) in the pseudogap with the minimum total density of states (DOS) as demonstrated by the first-principles calculations. Superconductivity in Nb1-xB2 generally becomes visible in the Nb-deficient materials with x=0.2. Electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) measurements on B K-edge directly demonstrated the presence of a chemical s…
The interplay between superconductivity and structural phase transition has attracted enormous interests in recent years. For example, in Fe-pnictide high temperature superconductors, quantum fluctuations in association with structural phase transition have been proposed to lead to many novel physical properties and even the superconductivity itself. Here we report a finding that the quasi-skutterudite superconductors (Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$)$_{3}$Ir$_{4}$Sn$_{13}$ ($x$ = 0, 0.5, 1) and Ca$_{3}$Rh$_{4}$Sn$_{13}$ show some unusual properties similar to the Fe-pnictides, through $^{119}$Sn nuclear m…
The physical properties and structural evolution of the 122-type solid solution BaNi2(Ge1-xPx)2 are reported. The in-plane X-X (X = Ge1-xPx) dimer formation present in the end member BaNi2Ge2, which results in a structural transition to orthorhombic symmetry, is completely suppressed to zero temperature on P substitution near x = 0.7, and a dome-shape superconducting phase with a maximum Tc = 2.9 K emerges. Clear indications of phonon softening and enhanced electron-phonon coupling are observed at the composition of the structural instability. Our findings show that dimer breaking offers new p…
Tetragonal beta-FeSe obtained by hydrothermal reaction is not superconducting and transforms to a triclinic structure at 60 K unlike superconducting FeSe from solid state synthesis, which becomes orthorhombic at 90 K. In contrast, tetragonal iron sulphide FeS from hydrothermal synthesis is superconducting at 4.8 K but undergoes no structural transition. Our results suggest that the absence of superconductivity in hydrothermally synthesized FeSe may be associated to the low-temperature structure with zigzag chains of iron atoms, which is different from the known orthorhombic Cmme structure of s…
The basic magnetic and electronic properties of most binary compounds have been well known for decades. Therefore the recent announcement of superconductivity at 39 K in the simple binary ceramic compound MgB2 is surprising. This compound, available from common chemical suppliers, and used as a starting material for chemical metathesis reactions, has been known and structurally characterized since the mid 1950's. Here we show that the addition of electrons to MgB2 through partial substitution of Al for Mg results in the loss of superconductivity. Associated with the Al substitution is a subtle…
We have synthesized a quaternary fluoroarsenide SrFeAsF with the ZrCuSiAs-type structure (P4/nmm, a = 0.3999 and c = 0.8973 nm), which is composed of an alternately stacked (FeAs)- and (SrF)+ layers, analogous to the FeAs-based superconductor LaFeAsO. SrFeAsF shows metallic type conduction with the anomaly at ~180 K. The partial replacement of the Fe with Co suppresses the anomaly and induces the superconductivity, while the maximal Tc (4 K for SrFe0.875Co0.125AsF) is much lower than that of the Co-substituted LaFeAsO. Replacement of (LaO)+ layers with (SrF)+ layers results in a enlargement of…
We successfully synthesized the BaPt$_2$As$_2$ single crystals and studied their structural and physical properties at low temperatures. BaPt$_2$As$_2$ crystallizes in the CaBe$_2$Ge$_2$-type tetragonal structure (P4/nmm) at room temperature and undergoes a first-order structural transition at $T_S\simeq 275$ K, which is likely associated with a charge-density-wave (CDW) instability. BCS-type superconductivity with two subsequent transitions at $T_{c1}=1.67$K and $T_{c2}$=1.33K are observed in this compound. Thus, BaPt$_2$As$_2$ may serve as a new system for studying the interplay of supercond…
In this letter, we report the results of detailed studies on Mn- and Cu-substitution to Fe-site of beta-FeSe, namely MnxFe1-xSe0.85 and CuxFe1-xSe0.85. The results show that with only 10 at% Cu-doping the compound becomes a Mott insulator. Detailed temperature dependent structural analyses of these Mn- and Cu-substituted compounds show that the structural transition, which is associated with the changes in the building block FeSe4 tetrahedron, is essential to the occurrence of superconductivity in beta-FeSe.
EXAFS studies at the As K edge as a function of temperature have been carried out in SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ ($x$ = 0 and 0.2) compounds to understand the role of local structural distortions superconductivity observed in F doped compound. A significant correlation between thermal variation of local structural parameters like anion height and superconducting onset is found in the fluorinated compound. Such a variation in anion height is absent in non-superconducting compound. Increase in Fe-As bond distance just below superconducting onset temperature indicates a similarity in distortions observe…
High temperature superconductivity is often found in the vicinity of antiferromagnetism. This is also true in LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$ ($x \leq$ 0.2) and many other iron-based superconductors, which leads to proposals that superconductivity is mediated by fluctuations associated with the nearby magnetism. Here we report the discovery of a new superconductivity dome without low-energy magnetic fluctuations in LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$ with 0.25$\leq x \leq$0.75, where the maximal critical temperature $T_c$ at $x_{opt}$ = 0.5$\sim$0.55 is even higher than that at $x \leq$ 0.2. By nuclear magnetic res…
The discoveries of superconductivity in heavily boron-doped diamond, silicon and silicon carbide renewed the interest in the ground states of charge-carrier doped wide-gap semiconductors. Recently, aluminium doping in silicon carbide successfully yielded a metallic phase from which at high aluminium concentrations superconductivity emerges. Here, we present a specific-heat study on superconducting aluminium-doped silicon carbide. We observe a clear jump anomaly at the superconducting transition temperature 1.5 K indicating that aluminium-doped silicon carbide is a bulk superconductor. An analy…
We report superconductivity, physical and structural properties of Ir1-xRhxTe2 (0<=x<=0.3). Superconducting transition with maximum Tc~2.6 K appears when the doping content of Rh x is in between 0.15 and 0.3. Further increasing the content of Rh will suppress the superconductivity. On the other hand, the high-temperature structural transition is suppressed gradually as Rh is incorporated into the lattice, eventually vanishing at x=0.2. These results imply competing relationship between structural transition and superconductivity. The isovalent ionic substitution of Rh into Ir has different eff…
The interplay of superconductivity with electronic and structural instabilities on the kagome lattice provides a fertile ground for the emergence of unusual phenomena. The vanadium-based kagome metals $A$V$_3$Sb$_5$ ($A=$ K, Rb, Cs) exhibit superconductivity on an almost ideal kagome lattice, with the superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ forming two domes upon pressure-tuning. The first dome arises from the competition between superconductivity and a charge-density-wave, whereas the origin for the second dome remains unclear. Herein, we show that the appearance of the second supe…
The discovery of intrinsic magnetism in atomically thin two-dimensional transition-metal trichalcogenides has attracted intense research interest due to the exotic properties of magnetism and potential applications in devices. Pressure has proven to be an effective tool to manipulate the crystal and electronic structures of the materials. Here, we report investigations on ferromagnetic van der Waals Cr2Si2Te6 via high-pressure synchrotron x-ray diffraction, electrical resistance, Hall resistance, and magnetoresistance measurements. Under compression, Cr2Si2Te6 simultaneously undergoes a struct…
The phase diagram of the t-J-V model is discussed using a 1/N expansion in terms of X operators. It is shown that a flux phase of d-wave symmetry is stabilized by the Coulomb interaction V at intermediate dopings and competes with d-wave superconductivity. Since the flux wave instability is stronger than the superconducting one optimal doping is essentially determined by the onset of the flux phase. Below optimal doping the flux phase coexists with superconductivity at low and exists as a pseudo gap phase at higher temperatures. It is also found that the flux phase boundary is much less sensit…
With infrared spectroscopy we studied the out-of-plane ($c$-axis) response of the iron arsenide superconductor ACa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$ (A = Rb,Cs) which has a bilayer structure similar to the high $T_c$ cuprates YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ (YBCO) and Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_8$ (Bi2212). In analogy to the cuprates, we observe a superconductivity-induced transverse plasma mode (tPM) and a phonon anomaly that are both signatures of local electric field effects that arise from a large difference between the local conductivities in the intra- and inter-bilayer regions. Using a multilayer model developed for…
The interplay between the band Jahn-Teller distortion and the superconductivity is studied for the system whose Fermi level lies in two-fold degenerate band. Assuming that the lattice distortion is coupled to the orbital electron density and the superconductivity arises due to BCS pairing mechanism between the electrons, the phase diagram is obtained for different doping with respect to half-filled band situation. The coexistence phase of superconductivity and distortion occurs within limited range of doping and the distortion lowers the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$. In presenc…
One of the central tenets of conventional theories of superconductivity, including most models proposed for the recently discovered iron-pnictide superconductors, is the notion that only electronic excitations with energies comparable to the superconducting energy gap are affected by the transition. Here we report the results of a comprehensive spectroscopic ellipsometry study of a high-quality crystal of superconducting $\textrm{Ba}_{0.68}\textrm{K}_{0.32}\textrm{Fe}_2\textrm{As}_2$ that challenges this notion. We observe a superconductivity-induced suppression of an absorption band at an ene…
We report significantly enhanced magnetic moment in K0.69(2)Fe1.45(1)Se2.00(1) single crystals with sharp Tc and bulk superconductivity obtained by postannealing and quenching process. There are two Fe sites in the K0.69(2)Fe1.45(1)Se2.00(1) unit cell: Fe1, which has higher symmetry with longer average Fe-Se bond length, and Fe2, which has lower symmetry with shorter average Fe-Se bond length. Temperature-dependent x-ray absorption fine-structure (XAFS) analysis results on quenched and as-grown K0.69(2)Fe1.45(1)Se2.00(1) crystals show that quenched K0.69(2)Fe1.45(1)Se2.00(1) have increased ave…
We investigate the 16-band d-p model for iron pnictide superconductors in the presence of the electron-phonon coupling g with the orthorhombic mode which is crucial for reproducing the recently observed ultrasonic softening. Within the RPA, we obtain the ferro-orbital order below TQ which induces the tetragonal-orthorhombic structural transition at Ts = TQ, together with the stripe-type antiferromagnetic order below TN. Near the phase transitions, the system shows the s++ wave superconductivity due to the orbital fluctuation for a large g case with TQ > TN, while the s+- wave due to the magnet…
We have carried out new neutron spectroscopic measurements on single crystals of La$_{1.6-x}$Nd$_{0.4}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ from 0.12 to 0.26 using time-of-flight techniques. These measurements allow us to follow the evolution of parallel spin stripe fluctuations with energies less than 33 meV, from x=0.12 to 0.26. Samples at these hole-doping levels are known to display static (on the neutron scattering time scale) parallel spin stripes at low temperature, with onset temperatures and intensities which decrease rapidly with increasing x. Nonetheless, we report remarkably similar dynamic spectral weig…
Prior to the superconducting transition at Tc = 2.3 K, Mo3Sb7 undergoes a symmetry-lowering, cubic-to-tetragonal structural transition at Ts = 53 K. We have monitored the pressure dependence of these two transitions by measuring the resistivity of Mo3Sb7 single crystals under various hydrostatic pressures up to 15 GPa. The application of external pressure enhances Tc but suppresses Ts until Pc ~ 10 GPa, above which a pressure-induced first order structural transition takes place and is manifested by the phase coexistence in the pressure range 8 < P < 12 GPa. The cubic phase above 12 GPa is als…
IrTe2, a layered compound with a triangular iridium lattice, exhibits a structural phase transition at approximately 250 K. This transition is characterized by the formation of Ir-Ir bonds along the b-axis. We found that the breaking of Ir-Ir bonds that occurs in Ir1-xPtxTe2 results in the appearance of a structural critical point in the T = 0 limit at xc = 0.035. Although both IrTe2 and PtTe2 are paramagnetic metals, superconductivity at Tc = 3.1 K is induced by the bond breaking in a narrow range of x > xc in Ir1-xPtxTe2. This result indicates that structural fluctuations can be involved in …
The crystal structure of LnFeAsO$_{1-y}$ (Ln = La, Nd) has been studied by the powder neutron diffraction technique. The superconducting phase diagram of NdFeAsO$_{1-y}$ is established as a function of oxygen content which is determined by Rietveld refinement. The small As-Fe bond length suggests that As and Fe atoms are connected covalently. FeAs$_4$-tetrahedrons transform toward a regular shape with increasing oxygen deficiency. Superconducting transition temperatures seem to attain maximum values for regular FeAs$_4$-tetrahedrons.
We examined doping effect of 3d transition metal elements (TM: Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, and Cu) at the Fe site of a quaternary fluoroarsenide CaFeAsF, an analogue of 1111-type parent compound LaFeAsO. The anomaly at ~120 K observed in resistivity (rho) vs. temperature (T) plot for the parent compound is suppressed by the doping of each TM element. Furthermore, Co- and Ni-doping (CaFe1-xTMxAsF, TM = Co, Ni) induces superconductivity with a transition temperature maximized at the nominal x = 0.10 for Co (22 K) and at x = 0.05 for Ni (12 K). These optimal doping levels may be understood by considering tha…
We have performed several high pressure electrical resistance experiments on Bi1.98Sr2.06Y0.68Cu2O8, an insulating parent compound of the high-Tc Bi2212 family of copper oxide superconductors. We find a resistive anomaly, a downturn at low temperature, that onsets with applied pressure in the 20-40 kbar range. Through both resistance and magnetoresistance measurements, we identify this anomaly as a signature of induced superconductivity. Resistance to higher pressures decreases Tc, giving a maximum of 10 K. The higher pressure measurements exhibit a strong sensitivity to the hydrostaticity of …
We report on the substitution effect of Indium (In) at the Ag site of layered oxychalcogenide La2O2Bi3Ag1-xInxS6. The Tc decreases with increasing In concentration. A hump in the normal state resistivity at an anomaly temperature (T*) near 180 K was observed for all the samples. The anomaly in the resistivity at T* is indicating the possible occurrence of a charge-density-wave (CDW) transition. The T* does not markedly change by In doping. The x dependence of Seebeck coefficient suggests that carrier concentration does not change by In doping. The EDX analysis indicates small amount of Bi defi…
Electronic nematicity in iron pnictide materials has been extensively studied by various experimental techniques, yet its heat capacity anomaly at the phase transition has not been examined quantitatively. In this work we review the thermodynamic description of nematicity in $Ba(Fe_{1-x}Co_{x})_{2}As_{2}$ using the Landau free energy, which defines the behavior of three thermodynamic quantities: the structural orthorhombicity that develops below the nematic transition, the softening shear modulus above the transition, and the discontinuous heat capacity at the transition. We derive a quantitat…
From first principles calculations we find that the nearest and next nearest neighbor superexchange interactions between Fe ions in LaOFeAs are large, antiferromagnetic (AF), and give rise to a frustrated magnetic ground state which consists of two interpenerating AF square sublattices with M(Fe)=0.48$μ_B$. The system lowers its energy further by removing the frustration via a structural distortion. These results successfully explain the magnetic and structural phase transitions in LaOFeAs recently observed by neutron scattering. The presence of competing strong antiferromagnetic exchange inte…
Spinel compounds have demonstrated rich functionalities but rarely shown superconductivity. Here, we report the emergence of superconductivity in the spinel $\mathrm{MgTi}_2\mathrm{O}_4$, known to be an insulator with a complicated order. The superconducting transition is achieved by engineering a superlattice of $\mathrm{MgTi}_2\mathrm{O}_4$ and $\mathrm{SrTiO}_3$. The onset transition temperature in the $\mathrm{MgTi}_2\mathrm{O}_4$ layer can be tuned from 0 to 5 K in such geometry, concurrently with a stretched $c$-axis (from 8.51 to 8.53 Å) compared to the bulk material. Such a positive co…
We present the first experimental evidence for metallicity, superconductivity (SC) and the co-existence of charge density waves (CDW) in the quasi-one-dimensional material HfTe3. The existence of such phenomena is a typical characteristic of the transition metal chalcogenides however, without the application of hydrostatic pressure/chemical doping, it is rare for a material to exhibit the co-existence of both states. Materials such as HfTe3 can therefore provide us with a unique insight into the relationship between these multiple ordered states. By improving on the original synthesis conditio…
Doping bismuth selenide (Bi2Se3) with elements such as copper and strontium (Sr) can induce superconductivity, making the doped materials interesting candidates to explore potential topological superconducting behaviors. It was thought that the superconductivity of doped Bi2Se3 was induced by dopant atoms intercalated in van der Waals gaps. However, several experiments have shown that the intercalation of dopant atoms may not necessarily make doped Bi2Se3 superconducting. Thus, the structural origin of superconductivity in doped Bi2Se3 remains an open question. Herein, we combined material syn…
We consider a system where structural polymorphism suggests the possible existence of superconductivity through the implied structural instability. SrPd2Bi2 has two poly-morphs which can be controlled by the synthesis temperature: a tetragonal form (CaBe2Ge2-type) and a monoclinic form (BaAu2Sb2-type). Though the crystallographic difference between the two forms may at first seem trivial, we show that tetragonal SrPd2Bi2 is superconducting at 2.0 K whereas monoclinic SrPd2Bi2 is not. We rationalize this finding and place it in context with other 1-2-2 phases
An index for the characterisation of the Perovskite type Superconductors is introduced. The index, denominated as Structural Parameter of High Tc Superconductivity (PESATc from its name in Spanish), is calculated using a Moebius Orbital defined as the length of an Octahedral Moebius Strip overlaying the octahedra created by the CuO planes and the apical Oxygen atoms, O(4). Results for structures of YBCO:123 type compounds are presented; their atomic positions were measured by neutron diffraction and x-ray diffraction techniques as reported in the literature. It has been found that critical tem…
We present the results of the specific heat and AC magnetic susceptibility measurements of $CeIr_{1-x}Rh_xIn_5$ for x from 0 to 0.5. As x is increased from 0 both quantities reflect the competition between two effects. The first is a suppression of superconductivity below the bulk transition temperature of T$_c = 0.4$ K, which is due to the pair breaking effect of Rh impurities. The second is an increase in the volume fraction of the superconducting regions above T$_c$, which we attribute to defect-induced strain. Analysis of the H-T phase diagram for CeIrIn$_5$obtained from the bulk probes an…
We have determined the crystal structures and superconducting transition temperatures of La1.48Nd0.4Sr0.12CuO4 under nearly hydrostatic pressures in diamond anvil cells to 5.0 GPa and 19.0 GPa, respectively. Synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction measurements were used to establish the pressure-temperature structural phase diagram. Under pressure the superconducting transition temperature increases rapidly from Tc = 3 K to a maximum value of 22 K at 5 GPa, a pressure slightly greater than that required to stabilize the undistorted I4/mmm structure in the superconducting state. Increasing the pre…
We report specific-heat and resistivity experiments performed in parallel in a Bridgman-type of pressure cell in order to investigate the nature of pressure-induced superconductivity in the iron pnictide compound CaFe2As2. The presence of a pronounced specific-heat anomaly at Tc reveals a bulk nature of the superconducting state. The thermodynamic transition temperature differs dramatically from the onset of the resistive transition. Our data indicates that superconductivity occurs in the vicinity of a crystallographic phase transition. We discuss the discrepancy between the two methods as cau…
We have measured the magnetic field and temperature dependence of specific heat on $Bi_2Sr_{2-x}La_xCuO_{6+δ}$ single crystals in wide doping and temperature regions. The superconductivity related specific heat coefficient $γ_{sc}$ and entropy $S_{sc}$ are determined. It is found that $γ_{sc}$ has a hump-like anomaly at $T_c$ and behaves as a long tail which persists far into the normal state for the underdoped samples, but for the heavily overdoped samples the anomaly ends sharply just near $T_c$. Interestingly, we found that the entropy associated with superconductivity is roughly conserved …
We demonstrate the emergence of superconductivity in pseudo-binary silicide SrNixSi2-x. The compound exhibits a structural phase transition from the cubic SrSi2-type structure (P4132) to the hexagonal AlB2-type structure (P6/mmm) upon substituting Ni for Si at approximately x = 0.1. The hexagonal structure is stabilized in the range of 0.1 < x < 0.7. The superconducting phase appears in the vicinity of the structural phase boundary. Ni acts as a nonmagnetic dopant, as confirmed by the Pauli paramagnetic behavior.
We present an ab-initio study of Ru substitution in two different compounds, BaFe2As2 and LaFeAsO, pure and F-doped. Despite the many similarities among them, Ru substitution has very different effects on these compounds. By means of an unfolding technique, which allows us to trace back the electronic states into the primitive cell of the pure compounds, we are able to disentangle the effects brought by the local structural deformations and by the impurity potential to the states at the Fermi level. Our results are compared with available experiments and show: i) satisfying agreement of the ca…
Since conventional superconductivity is mediated by phonons, their role in the mechanism of high temperature superconductivity has been considered very early after the discovery of the cuprates. The initial consensus was that phonons could not produce transition temperatures near 100K, and the main direction of research focused on nonphononic mechanisms. Subsequent work last reviewed by L. Pintschovius in 2005 showed that electron-phonon coupling in the cuprates is surprisingly strong for some phonons and its role is controversial. Experiments performed since then identified anomalous behavior…
The nonadiabatic Heisenberg model predicts a structural distortion in LiFeAs below a temperature higher than (or at least equal to) the superconducting transition temperature. Within this group-theoretical model, the reduction of the symmetry caused by the distortion is a prerequisite for the superconducting state in this compound and can be realized by a mere displacement of the iron atoms from their positions in the space group P4/nmm.

National Laboratory of Solid State Microstructures and Department of Physics, Collaborative Innovation Center of Advanced Microstructures, Nanjing University(南京大学固体微结构物理国家重点实验室和物理学院,先进微结构协同创新中心)
Motivated by predictions of a substantial contribution of the "buckling" vibration of the CuO2 layers to d-wave superconductivity in the cuprates, we have performed an inelastic neutron scattering study of this phonon in an array of untwinned crystals of YBa2Cu3O7. The data reveal a pronounced softening of the phonon at the in-plane wave vector q = (0, 0.3) upon cooling below ~ 105 K, but no corresponding anomaly at q = (0.3, 0). Based on the observed in-plane anisotropy, we argue that the electron-phonon interaction responsible for this anomaly supports an electronic instability associated wi…
A possibility of high, room-temperature superconductivity was predicted for metallic hydrogen in the 1960s. However, metallization and superconductivity of hydrogen are yet to be unambiguously demonstrated in the laboratory and may require pressures as high as 5 million atmospheres. Rare earth based "superhydrides" such as LaH10 can be considered a close approximation of metallic hydrogen even though they form at moderately lower pressures. In superhydrides the predominance of H-H metallic bonds and high superconducting transition temperatures bear the hallmarks of metallic hydrogen. Still, ex…
$β$-ThRhGe, the high-temperature polymorph of ThRhGe, is isostructural to the well-known ferromagnetic superconductor URhGe. However, contrary to URhGe, $β$-ThRhGe is nonmagnetic and undergoes an incomplete structural phase transition at 244 K, followed by a superconducting transition below 3.36 K. Here we show that the isovalent substitution of Ir for Rh leads to a strong enhancement of superconductivity by suppressing the structural transition. At $x$ = 0.5, where the structural transition disappears, $T_{\rm c}$ reaches a maximum of 6.88 K. The enhancement of superconductivity is linked to …
We synthesized the samples $Ba_{1-x}M_xFe_2As_2$ (M=La and K) with $ThCr_2Si_2$-type structure. These samples were systematically characterized by resistivity, thermoelectic power (TEP) and Hall coefficient ($R_H$). $BaFe_2As_2$ shows an anomaly in resistivity at about 140 K. Substitution of La for Ba leads to a shift of the anomaly to low temperature, but no superconducting transition is observed. Potassium doping leads to suppression of the anomaly in resistivity and induces superconductivity at 38 K as reported by Rotter et al.\cite{rotter}. The Hall coefficient and TEP measurements indicat…
