Given a connected smooth projective surface X over the complex numbers, together with a simple normal crossings divisor D on it, we study finite normal covers Y of X that are unramified outside D. Given moreover a fibration of X onto a curve C, we prove that the `height' of Y over C is bounded linearly in terms of the degree of Y over X. We indicate how an arithmetic analogue of this result, if true, can be auxiliary in proving the existence of a polynomial time algorithm that computes the mod-l Galois representations associated to a given smooth projective geometrically connected surface over the rational numbers. A precise conjecture is formulated.
We show that the number of bifurcation points at infinity of a polynomial function f : C2 -> C is at most the number of branches at infinity of a generic fiber of f and that this upper bound can be diminished by one in certain cases.
Let $\mathcal{M}_{g}$ be the moduli space of compact connected hyperbolic surfaces of genus $g\geq2$, and ${\mathcal B}_g \subset {\mathcal M}_{g} $ its branch locus. Let $\widehat{\mathcal{M}_{g}}$ be the Deligne-Mumford compactification of the moduli space of smooth, complete, connected surfaces of genus $g\geq 2$ over $\mathbb{C}$. The branch locus ${\mathcal B}_g$ is stratified by smooth locally closed equisymmetric strata, where a stratum consists of hyperbolic surfaces with equivalent action of their preserving orientation isometry group. Any stratum can be determined by a certain epimor…
If $n \geq 3$, then moduli space ${\mathcal M}_{0,[n+1]}$, of isomorphisms classes of $(n+1)$-marked spheres, is a complex orbifold of dimension $n-2$. Its branch locus ${\mathcal B}_{0,[n+1]}$ consists of the isomorphism classes of those $(n+1)$-marked spheres with non-trivial group of conformal automorphisms. We prove that ${\mathcal B}_{0,[n+1]}$ is connected if either $n \geq 4$ is even or if $n \geq 6$ is divisible by $3$, and that it has exactly two connected components otherwise. The orbifold ${\mathcal M}_{0,[n+1]}$ also admits a natural real structure, this being induced by the comple…
To a dominant morphism $π:X/S \to Y/S$ of Nœtherian integral $S$-schemes one has the inclusion $C_π\subset B_π$ of the critical locus in the branch locus of $B_π$. Conditions on the relative differentials $Ω_{X/Y}$, $Ω_{X/S}$, and $Ω_{Y/S}$ are stated that imply bounds on the codimensions of $ C_π$ and $ B_π$. We also give bounds on the codimension of the discriminant locus, proving and generalising a conjecture of I. Dolgachev.
We examine conditions under which there exists a non-constant family of Galois branched covers of curves over an algebraically closed field $k$ of fixed degree and fixed ramification locus, under a notion of equivalence derived from considering linear series on a fixed smooth proper source curve $X$. We show such a family exists precisely when the following conditions are satisfied: $\operatorname{char}(k)=p>0$, $X$ is isomorphic to $\mathbb{P}^1_k$, there is a unique ramification point, and the Galois group is $(\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z})^m$ for some integer $m>0$.
We study Shimura curves of PEL type in $\mathsf{A}_g$ generically contained in the Prym locus. We study both the unramified Prym locus, obtained using étale double covers, and the ramified Prym locus, corresponding to double covers ramified at two points. In both cases we consider the family of all double covers compatible with a fixed group action on the base curve. We restrict to the case where the family is 1-dimensional and the quotient of the base curve by the group is $\mathbb{P}^1$. We give a simple criterion for the image of these families under the Prym map to be a Shimura curve. Usin…
Let $k$ be a field, $K/k$ finitely generated and $L/K$ a finite, separable extension. We show that the existence of a $k$-valuation on $L$ which ramifies in $L/K$ implies the existence of a normal model $X$ of $K$ and a prime divisor $D$ on the normalization $X_L$ of $X$ in $L$ which ramifies in the scheme morphism $X_L \rightarrow X$. Assuming the existence of a regular, proper model $X$ of $K$, this is a straight-forward consequence of the Zariski-Nagata theorem on the purity of the branch locus. We avoid assumptions on resolution of singularities by using M. Temkin's inseparable local unifo…
We study the locus of abelian Galois covers of $\mathbb{P}^{1}$ in $A_{g}$ and the problem of occurrence of Shimura (special) subvarieties generated by these covers in the Torelli locus $T_{g}$ inside $A_{g}$. We first investigate the existence of Shimura subvarieties in the mentioned locus by some computational methods based on Moonen-Oort works and then exclude many cases using both characteristic $p$ methods and monodromy computations.
The following divisors in the space Sym^{12} P^1 of twelve points on P^1 are actually the same: (A) the possible locus of the twelve nodal fibers in a rational elliptic fibration (i.e. a pencil of plane cubic curves); (B) degree 12 binary forms that can be expressed as a cube plus a square; (C) the locus of the twelve tangents to a smooth plane quartic from a general point of the plane; (D) the branch locus of a degree 4 map from a hyperelliptic genus 3 curve to P^1; (E) the branch locus of a degree 3 map from a genus 4 curve to P^1 induced by a theta-characteristic; and several more. The corr…
Motivated by the realizability problem for principal tropical divisors with a fixed ramification profile, we explore the tropical geometry of the double ramification locus in $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$.There are two ways to define a tropical analogue of the double ramification locus: one as a locus of principal divisors, the other as a locus of finite effective ramified covers of a tree. We show that both loci admit a structure of a generalized cone complex in $M_{g,n}^{trop}$, with the latter contained in the former. We prove that the locus of principal divisors has cones of codimension zero in $M_{…
We show that families of Pryms of abelian Galois covers of $\mathbb{P}^1$ in $A_{g-1}$ (resp. $A_g$) do not give rise to high dimensional Shimura subvareties.
We study some particular loci inside the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_g$, namely the bielliptic locus (i.e. the locus of curves admitting a $2:1$ cover over an elliptic curve $E$) and the bihyperelliptic locus (i.e. the locus of curves admitting a $2:1$ cover over a hyperelliptic curve $C'$, $g(C') \geq 2$). We show that the bielliptic locus is not a totally geodesic subvariety of $\mathcal{A}_g$ if $g \geq 4$ (while it is for $g=3$, see [16]) and that the bihyperelliptic locus is not totally geodesic in $\mathcal{A}_g$ if $g \geq 3g'$. We also give a lower bound for the rank of the second gaussi…
In this paper we consider unramified coverings of the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_g$ of smooth projective complex curves of genus $g$. Under some hypothesis on the branch locus of the finite extended map to the Deligne-Mumford compactification, we prove the vanishing of the vector space of holomorphic 1-forms on the preimage of the smooth locus of $\mathcal{M}_g$. This applies to several moduli spaces, as the moduli space of curves with 2-level structures, of spin curves and of Prym curves. In particular, we obtain that there are no non-trivial holomorphic 1-forms on the smooth open set of the P…
Using the theory of cohomology support locus, we give a necessary condition for the Albanese map of a smooth projective surface being a submersion. More precisely, assuming the cohomology support locus of any finite abelian cover of a smooth projective surface consists of finitely many points, we prove that the surface has trivial first Betti number, or is a ruled surface of genus one, or is an abelian surface.
In a recent paper Chiodo and Farkas described the singular locus and the locus of non-canonical singularities of the moduli space of level curves. In this work we generalize their results to the moduli space $\overline{\mathcal R}_{g,G}$ of curves with a $G$-cover for any finite group $G$. We show that non-canonical singularities are of two types: $T$-curves, that is singularities lifted from the moduli space $\overline{\mathcal M}_g$ of stable curves, and $J$-curves, that is new singularities entirely characterized by the dual graph of the cover. Finally, we prove that in the case $G=S_3$, th…
Motivated by a kind of Penrose correspondence, we investigate the space of hyperplane sections of Segre quartic surfaces which have an ordinary cusp. We show that the space of such hyperplane sections is empty for two kinds of Segre surfaces, and it is a connected surface for all other kinds of Segre surfaces. We also show that when it is non-empty, the closure of the space is either birational to the surface itself or birational to a double covering of the surface, whose branch divisor consists of some specific lines on the surface.
Let $K$ be a number field and $v$ a non archimedean valuation on $K$. We say that an endomorphism $Φ\colon \mathbb{P}_1\to \mathbb{P}_1$ has good reduction at $v$ if there exists a model $Ψ$ for $Φ$ such that $\degΨ_v$, the degree of the reduction of $Ψ$ modulo $v$, equals $\degΨ$ and $Ψ_v$ is separable. We prove a criterion for good reduction that is the natural generalization of a result due to Zannier in \cite{Uz3}. Our result is in connection with other two notions of good reduction, the simple and the critically good reduction. The last part of our article is dedicated to prove a characte…
Given the Prym variety of an étale double cover one can define analogues of the classical Brill-Noether loci on Jacobians of curves. Recent work by Lahoz and Naranjo shows that the Brill-Noether locus $V^2$ completely determines the covering. In this paper we describe the singular locus and the irreducible components of $V^2$.
We prove that the moduli space of Calabi-Yau 3-folds coming from eight planes of $P^3$ in general positions is not modular. In fact we show the stronger statement that the Zariski closure of the monodromy group is actually the whole $Sp(20,R)$. We construct an interesting submoduli, which we call \emph{hyperelliptic locus}, over which the weight 3 $Q$-Hodge structure is the third wedge product of the weight 1 $Q$-Hodge structure on the corresponding hyperelliptic curve. The non-extendibility of the hyperelliptic locus inside the moduli space of a genuine Shimura subvariety is proved.
For infinitely many Hurwitz spaces parametrizing cyclic covers of the projective line, we provide a method to determine the integral PEL datum of the Shimura variety that contains the image of the Hurwitz space under the Torelli morphism.
We construct configuration spaces for cyclic covers of the projective line that admit extra automorphisms and we describe the locus of curves with given automorphism group. As an application we provide examples of arbitrary high genus that are defined over their field of moduli and are not hyperelliptic.
The goal of this paper is to give a method to compute the space of infinitesimal deformations of a double cover of a smooth algebraic variety. The space of all infinitesimal deformations has a representation as a direct sum of two subspaces. One is isomorphic to the space of simultaneous deformations of the branch locus and the base of the double covering. The second summand is the subspace of deformations of the double covering which induce trivial deformations of the branch divisor. The main result of the paper is a description of the effect of imposing singularities in the branch locus. As …
Given a triple cover p: X --> Y of varieties, we produce a new variety Z and a birational morphism f: Z --> X which is an isomorphism away from the fat-point ramification locus of p. The variety Z has a natural interpretation in terms of the data describing the triple cover, and the morphism f has an elegant geometric description.
We study the locus of the moduli space of Higgs bundles on a curve given by those Higgs bundles obtained by pushforward under an unramified cover. We equip these loci with a hyperholomorphic bundle so that they can be viewed as BBB-branes, and we introduce corresponding BAA-branes which can be described via Hecke modifications. We then show how these branes are naturally dual via explicit Fourier--Mukai transform, where we recall that the structure group $\mathrm{GL}(n,\mathbb{C})$ is Langlands self dual. It is noteworthy that these branes lie over the singular locus of the Hitchin fibration. …
Given an Enriques surface $T$, its universal K3 cover $f: S\to T$, and a genus $g$ linear system $|C|$ on $T$, we construct the relative Prym variety $P_H=\Prym_{v, H}(\D/\CC)$, where $\CC\to |C|$ and $\D\to |f^*C|$ are the universal families, $v$ is the Mukai vector $(0,[D], 2-2g)$ and $H$ is a polarization on $S$. The relative Prym variety is a $(2g-2)$-dimensional possibly singular variety, whose smooth locus is endowed with a hyperkähler structure. This variety is constructed as the closure of the fixed locus of a symplectic birational involution defined on the moduli space $M_{v,H}(S)$. T…
Working with a singular variety X, one is often interested in comparing the set of etale covers of X with that of its smooth locus X_reg. More precisely, one may ask: What are the obstructions to extend finite etale covers of X_reg to all of X? How do the etale fundamental groups of X and of its smooth locus compare? For projective varieties with Kawamata log terminal (klt) singularities we answer these questions in part. The main result of this paper asserts that there are no infinite towers of finite morphisms over a klt base variety where all morphisms are etale in codimension one, but bran…
We shall give, in an optimal form, a sufficient numerical condition for the finiteness of the fundamental group of the smooth locus of a normal K3 surface. We shall moreover prove that, if the normal K3 surface is elliptic and the above fundamental group is not finite, then there is a finite covering which is a complex torus.
A result of Belyi can be stated as follows. Every curve defined over a number field can be expressed as a cover of the projective line with branch locus contained in a rigid divisor. We define the notion of geometrically rigid divisors in surfaces and then show that every surface defined over a number field can be expressed as a cover of the projective plane with branch locus contained in a geometrically rigid divisor in the plane. The main result is the characterisation of arithmetically defined divisors in the plane as geometrically rigid divisors in the plane.
In his Ph. D. thesis, C. Lehr offers an algorithm which gives the stable model for p-cyclic covers of the projective line over a p-adic field under the conditions that the branch locus whose cardinal is m+1 has the so called equidistant geometry and m<p. In this note we give an algorithm also in the equidistant geometry case but without condition on m. In particular we are able to study the reduction at 2 of hyperelliptic curves with equidistant branch locus.
A well-known and difficult problem in computational number theory and algebraic geometry is to write down equations for branched covers of algebraic curves with specified monodromy type. In this article, we present a technique for computing such covers in the case of totally ramified covers of elliptic curves branched at one point.
Let f : X -> Y be a morphism between normal complex varieties, and assume that Y is Kawamata log terminal. Given any differential form, defined on the smooth locus of Y, we construct a "pull-back form" on X. The pull-back map obtained by this construction is O_Y-linear, uniquely determined by natural universal properties and exists even in cases where the image of f is entirely contained in the singular locus of the target variety Y. One relevant setting covered by the construction is that where f is the inclusion (or normalisation) of the singular locus of Y. As an immediate corollary, we sho…
We prove the relation between the Hodge structure of the double cover of a nonsingular cubic surface branched along its Hessian and the Hodge structure of the triple cover of the ambient projective space branched along the cubic surface. And we introduce a method to study the infinitesimal variations of Hodge structure of the double cover of the cubic surface. Using these results, we compute the Néron-Severi lattices for the double cover of a generic cubic surface and the Fermat cubic surface.
We consider two varieties associated to a web of quadrics W in the projective space of dimension 7. One is the base locus and the second one is the double cover of the three dimensional projective space branched along the determinant surface of W. We show that small resolutions of these varieties are Calabi-Yau manifolds. We compute their Betti numbers and show that they are not birational in the generic case. The main result states that if the base locus of W contains a plane then in the generic case the two varieties are birational.
We present algorithms for reconstructing, up to unavoidable projective automorphisms, surfaces with ordinary singularities in three dimensional space starting from their silhouette, or "apparent contour" - namely the branching locus of a projection on the plane - and the projection of their singular locus.
Let $φ\colon X\rightarrow Y$ be a degree two Galois cover of smooth curves over a local field $F$ of odd characteristic. Assuming that $Y$ has good reduction, we describe a semi-stability criterion for the curve $X$, using the data of the branch locus of the covering $φ$. In the case that $X$ has semi-stable reduction, we describe the dual graph of the minimal regular model of $X$ over $F.$ We do this by adopting the notion of cluster picture defined for hyperelliptic curves for the case where $Y$ is not necessarily a rational curve. Using these results, we describe the variation of the p-adic…
The focal locus $Σ_X$ of an affine variety $X$ is roughly speaking the (projective) closure of the set of points $O$ for which there is a smooth point $x \in X$ and a circle with centre $O$ passing through $x$ which osculates $X$ in $x$. Algebraic geometry interprets the focal locus as the branching locus of the endpoint map $ε$ between the Euclidean normal bundle $N_X$ and the projective ambient space ($ε$ sends the normal vector $O-x$ to its endpoint $O$), and in this paper we address two general problems : 1) Characterize the "degenerate" case where the focal locus is not a hypersurface 2) …
Consider the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_{g}$ of Riemann surfaces of genus $g\geq 2$ and its Deligne-Munford compactification $\bar{\mathcal{M}_{g}}$. We are interested in the branch locus ${\mathcal{B}_{g}}$ for $g>2$, i.e., the subset of $\mathcal{M}_{g}$ consisting of surfaces with automorphisms. It is well-known that the set of hyperelliptic surfaces (the hyperelliptic locus) is connected in $\mathcal{M}_{g}$ but the set of (cyclic) trigonal surfaces is not. By contrast, we show that for $g\geq 5$ the set of (cyclic) trigonal surfaces is connected in $\bar{\mathcal{M}_{g}}$. To do so we exhi…
We prove irreducibility for the space of cyclic covers of fixed numerical type between smooth projective curves, and also for the space of cyclic covers of prime order and of fixed numerical-combinatorial type between moduli-stable projective curves. As an application we describe the irreducible components of the singular locus of the compactified moduli space of curves $\bar{\mahfrak M_g}$, extending the work of Cornalba, who described the irreducible components of the singular locus of the moduli space of curves $\mahfrak M_g}$.
Hurwitz numbers count genus g, degree d covers of the projective line with fixed branch locus. This equals the degree of a natural branch map defined on the Hurwitz space. In tropical geometry, algebraic curves are replaced by certain piece-wise linear objects called tropical curves. This paper develops a tropical counterpart of the branch map and shows that its degree recovers classical Hurwitz numbers.
Suppose $X$ is a smooth projective connected curve defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$ and $B \subset X$ is a finite, possibly empty, set of points. Booher and Cais determined a lower bound for the $a$-number of a $\mathbf{Z}/p \mathbf{Z}$-cover of $X$ with branch locus $B$. For odd primes $p$, in most cases it is not known if this lower bound is realized. In this note, when $X$ is ordinary, we use formal patching to reduce that question to a computational question about $a$-numbers of $\mathbf{Z}/p\mathbf{Z}$-covers of the affine line. As an application, when $p…
Esnault-Viehweg developed the theory of cyclic branched coverings $\tilde X\to X$ of smooth surfaces providing a very explicit formula for the decomposition of $H^1(\tilde X,\mathbb{C})$ in terms of a resolution of the ramification locus. Later, the first author applies this to the particular case of coverings of $\mathbb{P}^2$ reducing the problem to a combination of global and local conditions on projective curves. In this paper we extend the above results in three directions: first, the theory is extended to surfaces with quotient singularities, second the ramification locus can be partiall…
Suppose that Y is a cyclic cover of projective space branched over a hyperplane arrangement D, and that U is the complement of the ramification locus in Y. The first theorem implies that the Beilinson-Hodge conjecture holds for U if certain multiplicities of D are coprime to the degree of the cover. For instance this applies when D is reduced with normal crossings. The second theorem shows that when D has normal crossings and the degree of the cover is a prime number, the generalized Hodge conjecture holds for any toroidal resolution of Y. The last section contains some partial extensions to m…
Given a contraction of a variety X to a base Y, we enhance the locus in Y over which the contraction is not an isomorphism with a certain sheaf of noncommutative rings D, under mild assumptions which hold in the case of (1) crepant partial resolutions admitting a tilting bundle with trivial summand, and (2) all contractions with fibre dimension at most one. In all cases, this produces a global invariant. In the crepant setting, we then apply this to study derived autoequivalences of X. We work generally, dropping many of the usual restrictions, and so both extend and unify existing approaches.…
