On quasi-purity of the branch locus

Let $k$ be a field, $K/k$ finitely generated and $L/K$ a finite, separable extension. We show that the existence of a $k$-valuation on $L$ which ramifies in $L/K$ implies the existence of a normal model $X$ of $K$ and a prime divisor $D$ on the normalization $X_L$ of $X$ in $L$ which ramifies in the scheme morphism $X_L \rightarrow X$. Assuming the existence of a regular, proper model $X$ of $K$, this is a straight-forward consequence of the Zariski-Nagata theorem on the purity of the branch locus. We consider systems of Laurent polynomials with support on a fixed point configuration. In the non-defective case, the closure of the locus of coefficients giving a non-degenerate multiple root of the system is defined by a polynomial called the mixed discriminant. We define a related polynomial called the multivariate iterated discriminant, generalizing the classical Schäfli method for hyperdeterminants. Constructing local models for Lagrangian torus fibrations

We give a construction of Lagrangian torus fibrations with controlled discriminant locus on certain affine varieties. In particular, we apply our construction in the following ways. We find a Lagrangian torus fibration on the 3-fold negative vertex whose discriminant locus has codimension 2; this provides a local model for finding torus fibrations on compact Calabi-Yau 3-folds with codimension 2 discriminant locus. Geometry and intersection theory on Hilbert schemes of families of nodal curves

We study the relative Hilbert scheme of a family of nodal (or smooth) curves, over a base of arbitrary dimension, via its (birational) cycle map, going to the relative symmetric product. We show the cycle map is the blowing up of the discriminant locus, which consists of cycles with multiple points. We work out the action of the blowup or 'discriminant' polarization on some natural cycles in the Hilbert scheme, including generalized diagonals and cycles, called 'node scrolls', parametrizing schemes supported on singular points. We study the cohomological properties of the fixed locus $X^G$ of an automorphism group $G$ of prime order $p$ acting on a variety $X$ whose integral cohomology is torsion-free. We obtain an precise relation between the mod $p$ cohomology of $X^G$ and natural invariants for the action of $G$ on the integral cohomology of $X$.
