Let X be a complex manifold and c a simple closed curve in X. We address the question: What conditions on c ensure the existence of a 1-dimensional complex subvariety V with boundary c in X. When X = C^n, an answer to this question involves the polynomial hull of gamma. When X = P^n, complex projective space, the projective hull hat{c} of c comes into play. One always has V contained in hat{c}, and for analytic curves they conjecturally coincide.
In this paper we establish an approximate analogue of this idea which holds without the analyticity of c. We characterize points in hat{c} as those which lie on a sequence of analytic disks whose boundaries converge down to c. This is in the spirit of work of Poletsky and of Larusson-Sigurdsson, whose work is essential here.
The results are applied to construct a remarkable example of a closed curve c in P^2, which is real analytic at all but one point, and for which the closure of hat{c} is W \cup L where L is a projective line and W is an analytic (non-algebraic) subvariety of P^2 - L. Furthermore, hat{c} itself is the union of W with only two points on L.
We introduce the notion of a ``projective hull'' for subsets of complex projective varieties, parallel to the idea of the polynomial hull in affine varieties. With this concept, a generalization of J. Wermer's classical theorem on the hull of a curve in $C^n$ is established in the projective setting. The projective hull is shown to have interesting properties and is related to various extremal functions and capacities in pluripotential theory. A main analytic result asserts that for any point x in the projective hull K^ of a compact set K in $P^n$, there exists a positive current T of bidimens…
We prove that if $K$ is a compact subset of an affine variety O = P^n - D (where D is a projective hypersuface), and if K is a compact subset of a closed analytic subvariety V \subset O, then the projective hull K^ of K has the property that K^ \cap O is contained in V. If V is smooth and 1-dimensional, then K^ \cap O is also closed in O. The result has applications to graphs in C^2 of functions in the disk algebra.
The notion of the projective hull of a compact set in a complex projective space was introduced by Harvey and Lawson in 2006. In this paper we describe the projective hull by Poletsky sequences of analytic discs, in analogy to the known descriptions of the holomorphic and the plurisubharmonic hull.
Using a recent result of Lárusson and Poletsky regarding plurisubharmonic subextensions we prove a disc formula for the quasiplurisubharmonic global extremal function for domains in complex projective space. As a corollary we get a characterization of the projective hull for connected compact sets in complex projective space by the existence of analytic discs.
We give conditions characterizing holomorphic and meromorphic functions in the unit disk of the complex plane in terms of certain weak forms of the maximum principle. Our work is directly inspired by recent results of John Wermer, and by the theory of the projective hull of a compact subset of complex projective space developed by Reese Harvey and Blaine Lawson.
Walter Rudin, in 1966, characterized analytic functions in the unit disk in terms of the maximum principle relative to the boundary. We conjecture a generalization of this result when the disk is replaced by the punctured disk, and we prove a special case of this conjecture, making use of the notion of projective hull in P^n introduced by R. Harvey and B. Lawson.
The projective hull X^ of a subset X in complex projective space P^n is an analogue of the classical polynomial hull of a set in C^n. If X is contained in an affine chart C^n on P^n, then the affine part of X^ is the set of points x in C^n for which there exists a constant M=M_x so that |p(x)| < M^d sup{|p(y)| : y in X} for all polynomials p of degree less than or equal to d, and any d > 0. Let X^(M) be the set of points x where M_x can be chosen < M. Using an argument of E. Bishop, we show the following. Let G be a compact real analytic curve (not necessarily connected) in C^2. Then for any l…
We consider complex projective space P^{n} and a smooth closed curve gamma in P^{n}. Harvey and Lawson have defined the notion of the projective hull \hat{K} of a compact subset K in P^n. This concept is an analogue of the polynomial hull of compact subsets of C^{n}. In the present note we study the relation between the following two properties of the curve gamma: (1) \hat{gamma} - gamma is a one-dimensional complex analytic subvariety of P^{n} - gamma, and (2) There exists a Stein subdomain of P^{n} which contains the projective hull \hat{gamma} of gamma.
A primary goal in this paper is to study the question that asks when a real analytic submanifold $M$ in ${\mathbb{C}}^{n+1}$ bounds a real analytic (up to $M$) Levi-flat hypersurface $\hat{M}$ near $p\in M$ such that $\hat{M}$ is foliated by a family of complex hypersurfaces moving along the normal direction of $M$ at $p$, and gives the invariant local hull of holomorphy of $M$ near $p$. This question is equivalent to the holomorphic flattening problem for $M$ near $p$. We will give an affirmative answer to above question when $p$ is a real complex tangent point with at least one elliptic dire…
A generalization of a result of Wermer concerning the existence of polynomial hulls without analytic discs is presented. As a consequence it is shown that there exists a Cantor set $X$ in ${\mathbb C}^3$ whose polynomial hull is strictly larger than $X$ but contains no analytic discs.
We discuss the relation between pluripolar hulls and fine analytic structure. Our main result is the following. For each non polar subset $S$ of the complex plane $\mathbb C$ we prove that there exists a pluripolar set $E \subset (S \times \mathbb C)$ with the property that the pluripolar hull of $E$ relative to $\mathbb C^2$ contains no fine analytic structure and its projection onto the first coordinate plane equals $\mathbb C$.
We prove two disc formulas for the Siciak-Zahariuta extremal function of an arbitrary open subset of complex affine space. We use these formulas to characterize the polynomial hull of an arbitrary compact subset of complex affine space in terms of analytic discs. Similar results in previous work of ours required the subsets to be connected.
We show that if the graph of a bounded analytic function in the unit disk $\mathbb D$ is not complete pluripolar in $\mathbb C^2$ then the projection of the closure of its pluripolar hull contains a fine neighborhood of a point $p \in \partial \mathbb D$. On the other hand we show that if an analytic function $f$ in $\mathbb D$ extends to a function $\mathcal{F}$ which is defined on a fine neighborhood of a point $p \in \partial \mathbb D$ and is finely analytic at $p$ then the pluripolar hull of the graph of $f$ contains the graph of $\mathcal{F}$ over a smaller fine neighborhood of $p$. We g…
In the paper new representations are obtained for duals and dual hulls of the classes of analytic functions. The Ruscheweyh duality principle is shown to hold under somewhat weaker assumptions. For a compact class of functions its subclass is constructed having the same dual as the original one.
In this paper we study the pluripolar hulls of analytic sets. In particular, we show that hulls of graphs of analytic functions can be multiple sheeted and sheets can be separated by a set of zero dimension.
Extensions of the notions of polynomially and rationally convex hulls are introduced. Using these notions, a generalization of a result of Duval and Levenberg on polynomially convex hulls containing no analytic discs is presented. As a consequence it is shown that there exists a Cantor set $X$ in ${\mathbb C}^3$ with a nontrivial polynomially convex hull that contains no analytic discs. Using this Cantor set, it is shown that there exist arcs and curves in ${\mathbb C}^4$ with nontrivial polynomially convex hulls that contain no analytic discs. This answers a question raised a few years ago by…
The paper investigates the algebraic properties of Banach algebras of complex-valued functions of bounded variation on a finite interval. It is proved that such algebras have Bass stable rank one and are projective free if they do not contain nontrivial idempotents. These properties are derived from a new result on the vanishing of the second Čech cohomology group of the polynomially convex hull of a continuum of a finite linear measure.
We show that a complex manifold M in the boundary of a smooth bounded pseudoconvex domain in C^n is an obstruction to compactness of the d-bar-Neumann operator on the domain, provided that at some point of M, the Levi form has the maximal possible rank n-1-dim(M) (i.e. the domain is strictly pseudoconvex in the directions transverse to M). In particular, an analytic disc is an obstruction, provided that at some point of the disc, the Levi form has only one zero eigenvalue. We also show that a boundary point where the Levi form has only one zero eigenvalue can be picked up by the plurisubharmon…
The existence of a nontrivial polynomially convex hull with every point a one-point Gleason part and with no nonzero bounded point derivations is established. This strengthens the \hbox{celebrated} result of Stolzenberg that there exists a nontrivial polynomially convex hull that contains no analytic discs. A doubly generated counterexample to the peak point conjecture is also presented.
We study the (global) Bishop problem for small perturbations of $\mathbf{S}^n$ --- the unit sphere of $\mathbb{C}\times\mathbb{R}^{n-1}$ --- in $\mathbb{C}^n$. We show that if $S\subset\mathbb{C}^n$ is a sufficiently-small perturbation of $\mathbf{S}^n$ (in the $\mathcal{C}^3$-norm), then $S$ bounds an $(n+1)$-dimensional ball $M\subset\mathbb{C}^n$ that is foliated by analytic disks attached to $S$. Furthermore, if $S$ is either smooth or real analytic, then so is $M$ (upto its boundary). Finally, if $S$ is real analytic (and satisfies a mild condition), then $M$ is both the envelope of holom…
It is shown that there exist arcs and simple closed curves in ${\mathbb C}^3$ with nontrivial polynomial hulls that contain no analytic discs. It is also shown that in any bounded Runge domain of holomorphy in ${\mathbb C}^N$ ($N \geq 2$) there exist polynomially convex arcs and simple closed curves of almost full measure. These results, which strengthen earlier results of the author, are obtained as consequences of a general result about polynomial hulls of arcs and simple closed curves through Cantor sets.
We study the equivalence problem under projective transformation for CR-hypersurfaces of complex projective space. A complete set of projective differential invariants for analytic hypersurfaces is given. The self-dual strongly C-linearly convex hypersurfaces are characterized.
It is known from the Runge approximation theorem that every function which is holomorphic in a neighborhood of a compact polynomially convex set $K\subset \complexes^{n}$ can be approximated uniformly on $K$ by analytic polynomials. We shall here prove the same result when the role of the polynomially convex hull $\hat {K}$ is played by the generalized polynomial hull $h_{q}(K)$ introduced by Basener and which can be defined, for each integer $q\in {0,...,n-1}$, by $h_{q}(K)=\displaystyle\bigcup_{P\in \complexes [z_{1},...,z_{n}]} A_{P}$ where $A_{P}=\{z\in \complexes^{n}: |P(z)|\leq δ_{K}(P,z…
We say that a subset of C^n is hypoconvex if its complement is the union of complex hyperplanes. Let D be the closed unit disk in C, T the unit circle. We prove two conjectures of Helton and Marshall. (See ``Frequency domain design and analytic selections,'' Indiana Univ. Math. J. 39, no. 1 (1990), 157-184.) Let p:T X C^n --> R+ be a smooth function whose sublevel sets have compact hypoconvex fibers over T. Then, with some restrictions on p, if Y is the set where p is less than or equal to 1, the polynomial convex hull of Y is the union of graphs of analytic vector-valued functions with bounda…
Let T be the unit circle in the complex plane C. This paper proves the existence of analytic structure in a compact subset K of T X C^n, where K has so-called "lineally convex" or "hypoconvex" fibers over T. It also addresses a related H-infinity optimization problem. The theorems here remove a number of unnatural assumptions required in an earlier work by the same author, "Polynomial hulls and H-infinity control for a hypoconvex constraint." (See http://www.arxiv.org/abs/math.CV/0001039)
We investigate the duality between local (complex analytic) projective structures on surfaces and two dimensional (complex analytic) neighborhoods of rational curves having self-intersection +1. We study the analytic classification, existence of normal forms, pencil/fibration decomposition, infinitesimal symmetries. We deduce some transcendental result about Painlev'e equations.
A joint generalization of real smooth as well of complex manifolds are the Cauchy-Riemann manifolds. The main objective of the paper is to inroduce a class of symmetric CR manifolds containing both classes of Riemannian and Hermitian symmetric spaces. It turns out that the classical requirement of isolated fixed points for the symmetries is no longer adequate, because it would imply the Levi-flatness. Among all symmetric CR-manifolds we distinguish a large subclass consisting of all Shilov boundaries of bounded symmetric domains. For this class we calculate the polynomial and the rational conv…
If $f$ is a non-Archimedean analytic curve in a projective variety $X$ embedded in $P^N$ and if $D_1,\dots,D_q$ are hypersurfaces of $P^N$ in general position with $X,$ then we prove the defect relation: $$ \sum_{j=1}^q δ(f,D_j) \le \dim X. $$
The main goal of this work is to prove that every entire curve in a generic hypersurface of degree greater than or equal to 593 in the complex projective space of dimension 4 is algebraically degenerated i.e contained in a proper subvariety.
We study extensions of Wermer's maximality theorem to several complex variables. We exhibit various smoothly embedded manifolds in complex Euclidean space whose hulls are non-trivial but contain no analytic disks. We answer a question posed by Lee Stout concerning the existence of analytic structure for a uniform algebra whose maximal ideal space is a manifold.
In this article we prove that every entire curve in the complement of a generic hypersurface of degree $d\geq 586$ in $\mathbb{P}_{\mathbb{C}}^{3}$ is algebraically degenerate i.e there exists a proper subvariety which contains the entire curve.

In this work, we obtain an unexpected geometric characterization of sphericity of a real-analytic Levi-nondegenerate hypersurface $M\subset\mathbb C^{2}$. We prove that $M$ is spherical if and only if its Segre\,(-Webster) varieties satisfy an elementary combinatorial property, identical to a property of straight lines on the plane and known in Projective Geometry as the {\em Desargues Theorem}.
This paper deals with the question of analytic continuation of holonomy germs of holomorphic foliations. We prove that for a quasi-minimal Riccati foliation of the complex projective plane, any holonomy germ of the foliation between complex projective lines can be analytically continued along a generic Brownian path.
Motivated by the finiteness of the set of automorphisms Aut(X) of a projective manifold X, and by Kobayashi-Ochiai's conjecture that a projective manifold dim(X)-analytically hyperbolic (also known as strongly measure hyperbolic) should be of general type, we investigate the finiteness properties of Aut(X) for a complex manifold satisfying a (pseudo-) intermediate hyperbolicity property. We first show that a complex manifold X which is (dim(X) -- 1)-analytically hyperbolic has indeed finite automorphisms group. We then obtain a similar statement for a pseudo-(dim(X) -- 1)-analytically hyperbol…
We study singular real-analytic Levi-flat hypersurfaces in complex projective space. We define the rank of an algebraic Levi-flat hypersurface and study the connections between rank, degree, and the type and size of the singularity. In particular, we study degenerate singularities of algebraic Levi-flat hypersurfaces. We then give necessary and sufficient conditions for a Levi-flat hypersurface to be a pullback of a real-analytic curve in $\mathbb{C}$ via a meromorphic function. Among other examples, we construct a nonalgebraic semianalytic Levi-flat hypersurface with compact leaves that is a …
The Hodge spectrum is an important analytic invariant of singularities encoding the Hodge filtration and the monodromy of the Milnor fiber. Explicit formulas exist for only a few cases. In this article the main result is a combinatorial formula for homogeneous polynomials in three variables whose reduced one define projective curve arrangements having only ordinary multiple points.
We investigate Hermitian metrics on the anti-canonical bundle of a rational surface obtained by blowing up the projective plane at nine points. For that purpose, we pose a modified variant of an argument made by Ueda on the complex analytic structure of a neighborhood of a subvariety by considering the deformation of the complex structure.
