We discuss the relation between pluripolar hulls and fine analytic structure. Our main result is the following. For each non polar subset $S$ of the complex plane $\mathbb C$ we prove that there exists a pluripolar set $E \subset (S \times \mathbb C)$ with the property that the pluripolar hull of $E$ relative to $\mathbb C^2$ contains no fine analytic structure and its projection onto the first coordinate plane equals $\mathbb C$.
In this paper we study the pluripolar hulls of analytic sets. In particular, we show that hulls of graphs of analytic functions can be multiple sheeted and sheets can be separated by a set of zero dimension.
We study the pluripolar hull of the graph of a holomorphic function f, defined on a domain D in the complex plane outside a polar set A of D. This leads to a theorem that describes under what conditions f is nowhere extendable over A, while the graph of f over D \ A is NOT complete pluripolar.
We present some basic properties of the boundary relative extremal function and discuss so called boundary pluripolar sets and boundary pluripolar hulls. We show that for B-regular domains the boundary pluripolar hull is always trivial on the boundary of the domain and present a "boundary version" of Zeriahi's theorem on the completeness of pluripolar sets.
We show that if the graph of a bounded analytic function in the unit disk $\mathbb D$ is not complete pluripolar in $\mathbb C^2$ then the projection of the closure of its pluripolar hull contains a fine neighborhood of a point $p \in \partial \mathbb D$. On the other hand we show that if an analytic function $f$ in $\mathbb D$ extends to a function $\mathcal{F}$ which is defined on a fine neighborhood of a point $p \in \partial \mathbb D$ and is finely analytic at $p$ then the pluripolar hull of the graph of $f$ contains the graph of $\mathcal{F}$ over a smaller fine neighborhood of $p$. We g…
Let A be a closed polar subset of a domain D in the complex plane C. We give a complete description of the pluripolar hull in D X C of the graph of a holomorphic function defined on D A. To achieve this, we prove for pluriharmonic measure certain semi-continuity properties and a localization principle.
The pluripolar hull of a pluripolar set E in $\mathbb{P}^n$ is the intersection of all complete pluripolar sets in $\mathbb{P}^n$ that contain $E$. We prove that the pluripolar hull of each compact pluripolar set in $\mathbb{P}^n$ is $F_σ$. The convergence set of a divergent formal power series $f(z_{0}, \dots,z_{n})$ is the set of all "directions" $ξ\in\mathbb{P}^{n}$ along which $f$ is convergent. We prove that the union of the pluripolar hulls of a countable collection of compact pluripolar sets in $\mathbb{P}^n$ is the convergence set of some divergent series $f$. The convergence sets on $…
Examples by Poletsky and the author and by Zwonek show the existence nowhere extendable holomorphic functions with the property that the pluripolar hull of their graphs is much larger than the graph of the respective functions and contains multiple sheets. We will explain this phenomenon by fine analytic continuation of the function over part of a Cantor-type set involved. This gives more information on the hull, and allows for weakening and effectiveness of the conditions in the original examples.
We prove that the image of a finely holomorphic map on a fine domain in $\mathbb{C}$ is pluripolar subset of $\mathbb{C}^{n}$. We also discuss the relationship between pluripolar hulls and finely holomorphic function.
We prove that in the extension theorem for separately holomorphic functions on an $N$-fold cross with singularities the case of analytic singularities follows from the case of pluripolar singularities.
The notion of the projective hull of a compact set in a complex projective space was introduced by Harvey and Lawson in 2006. In this paper we describe the projective hull by Poletsky sequences of analytic discs, in analogy to the known descriptions of the holomorphic and the plurisubharmonic hull.
A generalization of a result of Wermer concerning the existence of polynomial hulls without analytic discs is presented. As a consequence it is shown that there exists a Cantor set $X$ in ${\mathbb C}^3$ whose polynomial hull is strictly larger than $X$ but contains no analytic discs.
We prove two disc formulas for the Siciak-Zahariuta extremal function of an arbitrary open subset of complex affine space. We use these formulas to characterize the polynomial hull of an arbitrary compact subset of complex affine space in terms of analytic discs. Similar results in previous work of ours required the subsets to be connected.
In the paper new representations are obtained for duals and dual hulls of the classes of analytic functions. The Ruscheweyh duality principle is shown to hold under somewhat weaker assumptions. For a compact class of functions its subclass is constructed having the same dual as the original one.
Using a recent result of Lárusson and Poletsky regarding plurisubharmonic subextensions we prove a disc formula for the quasiplurisubharmonic global extremal function for domains in complex projective space. As a corollary we get a characterization of the projective hull for connected compact sets in complex projective space by the existence of analytic discs.
Extensions of the notions of polynomially and rationally convex hulls are introduced. Using these notions, a generalization of a result of Duval and Levenberg on polynomially convex hulls containing no analytic discs is presented. As a consequence it is shown that there exists a Cantor set $X$ in ${\mathbb C}^3$ with a nontrivial polynomially convex hull that contains no analytic discs. Using this Cantor set, it is shown that there exist arcs and curves in ${\mathbb C}^4$ with nontrivial polynomially convex hulls that contain no analytic discs. This answers a question raised a few years ago by…
It is shown that no purely topological condition implies the equality of the polynomial and rational hulls of a set: For any compact subset $K$ of a Euclidean space, there exists a set $X$, in some ${\mathbb C}^N$, that is homeomorphic to $K$ and is rationally convex but not polynomially convex. In addition, it is shown that for the surfaces in ${\mathbb C}^3$ constructed by Izzo and Stout, whose polynomial hulls are nontrivial but contain no analytic discs, the polynomial and rational hulls coincide, thereby answering a question of Gupta. Equality of polynomial and rational hulls is shown als…
We study the (global) Bishop problem for small perturbations of $\mathbf{S}^n$ --- the unit sphere of $\mathbb{C}\times\mathbb{R}^{n-1}$ --- in $\mathbb{C}^n$. We show that if $S\subset\mathbb{C}^n$ is a sufficiently-small perturbation of $\mathbf{S}^n$ (in the $\mathcal{C}^3$-norm), then $S$ bounds an $(n+1)$-dimensional ball $M\subset\mathbb{C}^n$ that is foliated by analytic disks attached to $S$. Furthermore, if $S$ is either smooth or real analytic, then so is $M$ (upto its boundary). Finally, if $S$ is real analytic (and satisfies a mild condition), then $M$ is both the envelope of holom…
Walter Rudin, in 1966, characterized analytic functions in the unit disk in terms of the maximum principle relative to the boundary. We conjecture a generalization of this result when the disk is replaced by the punctured disk, and we prove a special case of this conjecture, making use of the notion of projective hull in P^n introduced by R. Harvey and B. Lawson.
A primary goal in this paper is to study the question that asks when a real analytic submanifold $M$ in ${\mathbb{C}}^{n+1}$ bounds a real analytic (up to $M$) Levi-flat hypersurface $\hat{M}$ near $p\in M$ such that $\hat{M}$ is foliated by a family of complex hypersurfaces moving along the normal direction of $M$ at $p$, and gives the invariant local hull of holomorphy of $M$ near $p$. This question is equivalent to the holomorphic flattening problem for $M$ near $p$. We will give an affirmative answer to above question when $p$ is a real complex tangent point with at least one elliptic dire…
We show that a complex manifold M in the boundary of a smooth bounded pseudoconvex domain in C^n is an obstruction to compactness of the d-bar-Neumann operator on the domain, provided that at some point of M, the Levi form has the maximal possible rank n-1-dim(M) (i.e. the domain is strictly pseudoconvex in the directions transverse to M). In particular, an analytic disc is an obstruction, provided that at some point of the disc, the Levi form has only one zero eigenvalue. We also show that a boundary point where the Levi form has only one zero eigenvalue can be picked up by the plurisubharmon…
Let X be a complex manifold and c a simple closed curve in X. We address the question: What conditions on c ensure the existence of a 1-dimensional complex subvariety V with boundary c in X. When X = C^n, an answer to this question involves the polynomial hull of gamma. When X = P^n, complex projective space, the projective hull hat{c} of c comes into play. One always has V contained in hat{c}, and for analytic curves they conjecturally coincide. In this paper we establish an approximate analogue of this idea which holds without the analyticity of c. We characterize points in hat{c} as those w…
We study extensions of Wermer's maximality theorem to several complex variables. We exhibit various smoothly embedded manifolds in complex Euclidean space whose hulls are non-trivial but contain no analytic disks. We answer a question posed by Lee Stout concerning the existence of analytic structure for a uniform algebra whose maximal ideal space is a manifold.
Let $D_j\subset\Bbb C^{k_j}$ be a pseudoconvex domain and let $A_j\subset D_j$ be a locally pluripolar set, $j=1,...,N$. Put$$X:=\bigcup_{j=1}^N A_1\times...\times A_{j-1}\times D_j\times A_{j+1}\times...\times A_N\subset\Bbb C^{k_1+...+k_N}.$$Let $U$ be an open connected neighborhood of $X$ and let $M\varsubsetneq U$ be an analytic subset. Then there exists an analytic subset $\hat M$ of the `envelope of holomorphy' $\hat X$ of $X$ with $\hat M\cap X\subset M$ such that for every function $f$ separately holomorphic on $X\setminus M$ there exists an $\hat f$ holomorphic on $\hat X\setminus\hat…
It is shown that there exist arcs and simple closed curves in ${\mathbb C}^3$ with nontrivial polynomial hulls that contain no analytic discs. It is also shown that in any bounded Runge domain of holomorphy in ${\mathbb C}^N$ ($N \geq 2$) there exist polynomially convex arcs and simple closed curves of almost full measure. These results, which strengthen earlier results of the author, are obtained as consequences of a general result about polynomial hulls of arcs and simple closed curves through Cantor sets.
The projective hull X^ of a subset X in complex projective space P^n is an analogue of the classical polynomial hull of a set in C^n. If X is contained in an affine chart C^n on P^n, then the affine part of X^ is the set of points x in C^n for which there exists a constant M=M_x so that |p(x)| < M^d sup{|p(y)| : y in X} for all polynomials p of degree less than or equal to d, and any d > 0. Let X^(M) be the set of points x where M_x can be chosen < M. Using an argument of E. Bishop, we show the following. Let G be a compact real analytic curve (not necessarily connected) in C^2. Then for any l…
We prove that if $K$ is a compact subset of an affine variety O = P^n - D (where D is a projective hypersuface), and if K is a compact subset of a closed analytic subvariety V \subset O, then the projective hull K^ of K has the property that K^ \cap O is contained in V. If V is smooth and 1-dimensional, then K^ \cap O is also closed in O. The result has applications to graphs in C^2 of functions in the disk algebra.
We use twistor theory to identify the harmonic hull of an arbitrary connected open subset U of R^{2m} for m at least 2. It is the natural domain of analytic continuation in C^{2m} for harmonic functions on U.
We say that a subset of C^n is hypoconvex if its complement is the union of complex hyperplanes. Let D be the closed unit disk in C, T the unit circle. We prove two conjectures of Helton and Marshall. (See ``Frequency domain design and analytic selections,'' Indiana Univ. Math. J. 39, no. 1 (1990), 157-184.) Let p:T X C^n --> R+ be a smooth function whose sublevel sets have compact hypoconvex fibers over T. Then, with some restrictions on p, if Y is the set where p is less than or equal to 1, the polynomial convex hull of Y is the union of graphs of analytic vector-valued functions with bounda…
Let T be the unit circle in the complex plane C. This paper proves the existence of analytic structure in a compact subset K of T X C^n, where K has so-called "lineally convex" or "hypoconvex" fibers over T. It also addresses a related H-infinity optimization problem. The theorems here remove a number of unnatural assumptions required in an earlier work by the same author, "Polynomial hulls and H-infinity control for a hypoconvex constraint." (See http://www.arxiv.org/abs/math.CV/0001039)
We consider complex projective space P^{n} and a smooth closed curve gamma in P^{n}. Harvey and Lawson have defined the notion of the projective hull \hat{K} of a compact subset K in P^n. This concept is an analogue of the polynomial hull of compact subsets of C^{n}. In the present note we study the relation between the following two properties of the curve gamma: (1) \hat{gamma} - gamma is a one-dimensional complex analytic subvariety of P^{n} - gamma, and (2) There exists a Stein subdomain of P^{n} which contains the projective hull \hat{gamma} of gamma.
