On a Conjecture of Harvey and Lawson

We consider complex projective space P^{n} and a smooth closed curve gamma in P^{n}. Harvey and Lawson have defined the notion of the projective hull \hat{K} of a compact subset K in P^n. This concept is an analogue of the polynomial hull of compact subsets of C^{n}. In the present note we study the relation between the following two properties of the curve gamma: (1) \hat{gamma} - gamma is a one-dimensional complex analytic subvariety of P^{n} - gamma, and (2) There exists a Stein subdomain of P^{n} which contains the projective hull \hat{gamma} of gamma.

Counterexample to boundary regularity of a strongly pseudoconvex CR submanifold: An addendum to the paper of Harvey-Lawson

The purpose of this paper is to give a counterexample of Theorem 10.4 in [Ann. of Math. 102 (1975), 223-290]. In the Harvey-Lawson paper, a global result is claimed, but only a local result is proven. This theorem has had a big impact on CR geometry for almost a quarter of a century because one can use the theory of isolated singularities to study the theory of CR manifolds and vice versa.

On compact complex surfaces of Kähler rank one

The Kähler rank of compact complex surfaces was introduced by Harvey and Lawson in their 1983 paper on Kähler manifolds as a measure of ``kälerianity''. Here we give a partial classification of compact complex surfaces of Kähler rank 1. These are either elliptic surfaces, or Hopf surfaces, or they admit a holomorphic foliation of a very special type. As a consequence we give an affirmative answer to the question raised by Harvey and Lawson whether the Kähler rank is a birational invariant.

Rudin's Theorem and Projective Hulls

Walter Rudin, in 1966, characterized analytic functions in the unit disk in terms of the maximum principle relative to the boundary. We conjecture a generalization of this result when the disk is replaced by the punctured disk, and we prove a special case of this conjecture, making use of the notion of projective hull in P^n introduced by R. Harvey and B. Lawson.

Characterizations of Projective Hulls by Analytic Discs

The notion of the projective hull of a compact set in a complex projective space was introduced by Harvey and Lawson in 2006. In this paper we describe the projective hull by Poletsky sequences of analytic discs, in analogy to the known descriptions of the holomorphic and the plurisubharmonic hull.

Projective Hulls and Characterizations of Meromorphic Functions

We give conditions characterizing holomorphic and meromorphic functions in the unit disk of the complex plane in terms of certain weak forms of the maximum principle. Our work is directly inspired by recent results of John Wermer, and by the theory of the projective hull of a compact subset of complex projective space developed by Reese Harvey and Blaine Lawson.

Applications of singular connections in symplectic and almost complex geometry

In this paper, we give two direct applications of the theory of singular connections developped by Harvey-Lawson [10]. The first one is a version of Lelong-Poincaré formula for vector bundle over an almost complex manifold. The second is a convergence theorem for divisors associated to symplectic submanifolds constructed by Auroux in [2]. The case of hypersurfaces was done by Donaldsson in [4].

On the Kaehler rank of compact complex surfaces

Harvey and Lawson introduced the Kaehler rank and computed it in connection to the cone of positive exact currents of bidimension (1,1) for many classes of compact complex surfaces. In this paper we extend these computations to the only further known class of surfaces not considered by them, that of Kato surfaces. Our main tool is the reduction to the dynamics of associated holomorphic contractions.

The Kähler rank of compact complex manifolds

The Kähler rank was introduced by Harvey and Lawson in their 1983 paper as a measure of the {\it kählerianity} of a compact complex surface. In this work we generalize this notion to the case of compact complex manifolds and we prove several results related to this notion. We show that on class $VII$ surfaces, there is a correspondence between the closed positive forms on a surface and those on a blow-up in a point. We also show that a manifold of maximal Kähler rank which satisfies an additional condition is in fact Kähler.

Boundaries of analytic varieties

We prove that every smooth CR manifold $M\subset\subset \C^n$, of hypersurface type, has a complex strip-manifold extension in $\C^n$. If $M$ is, in addition, pseudoconvex-oriented, it is the "exterior" boundary of the strip. In turn, the strip extends to a variety with boundary $M$ (Rothstein-Sperling Theorem); in case $M$ is contained in a pseudoconvex boundary with no complex tangencies, the variety is embedded in $\C^n$.
