Generalizing a classical problem in enumerative combinatorics, Mansour and Sun counted the number of subsets of $\Z_n$ without certain separations. Chen, Wang, and Zhang then studied the problem of partitioning $\Z_n$ into arithmetical progressions of a given type under some technical conditions. In this paper, we improve on their main theorems by applying a convolution formula for cyclic multinomial coefficients due to Raney-Mohanty.
Let $b(n)$ denote the number of cubic partition pairs of $n$. In this paper, we aim to provide a strategy to obtain arithmetic properties of $b(n)$. This gives affirmative answers to two of Lin's conjectures.
We introduce the notion of arithmetic progression blocks or AP-blocks of $\mathbb{Z}_n$, which can be represented as sequences of the form $(x, x+m, x+2m, ..., x+(i-1)m) \pmod n$. Then we consider the problem of partitioning $\mathbb{Z}_n$ into AP-blocks for a given difference $m$. We show that subject to a technical condition, the number of partitions of $\mathbb{Z}_n$ into $m$-AP-blocks of a given type is independent of $m$. When we restrict our attention to blocks of sizes one or two, we are led to a combinatorial interpretation of a formula recently derived by Mansour and Sun as a generali…
Let $f: \mathbb{Z}_+\rightarrow \mathbb{Z}_+$ be a polynomial with the property that corresponding to every prime $p$ there exists an integer $\ell$ such that $p\nmid f(\ell)$. In this paper, we establish some equidistributed results between the number of partitions of an integer $n$ whose parts are taken from the sequence $\{f(\ell)\}_{\ell=1}^{\infty}$ and the number of parts of those partitions which are in a certain arithmetic progression.
Let $\mathrm{pod}_{-3}(n)$ denote the number of partition triples of $n$ where the odd parts in each partition are distinct. We find many arithmetic properties of $\mathrm{pod}_{-3}(n)$ involving the following infinite family of congruences: for any integers $α\ge 1$ and $n\ge 0$, \[\mathrm{pod}_{-3}\Big({{3}^{2α+2}}n+\frac{23\times {{3}^{2α+1}}+3}{8}\Big)\equiv 0 \pmod{9}.\] We also establish some arithmetic relations between $\mathrm{pod}(n)$ and $\mathrm{pod}_{-3}(n)$, as well as some congruences for $\mathrm{pod}_{-3}(n)$ modulo 7 and 11.
Let ${{B}_{3}}(n)$ denote the number of partition triples of $n$ where each partition is 3-core. With the help of generating function manipulations, we find several infinite families of arithmetic identities and congruences for ${{B}_{3}}(n)$. Moreover, let $ω(n)$ denote the number of representations of a nonnegative integer $n$ in the form $x_{1}^{2}+x_{2}^{2}+x_{3}^{2}+3y_{1}^{2}+3y_{2}^{2}+3y_{3}^{2}$ with ${{x}_{1}},{{x}_{2}},{{x}_{3}},{{y}_{1}},{{y}_{2}},{{y}_{3}}\in \mathbb{Z}.$ We find three arithmetic relations between ${{B}_{3}}(n)$ and $ω(n)$, such as $ω(6n+5)=4{{B}_{3}}(6n+4).$
For a given prime $p$, we study the properties of the $p$-dissection identities of Ramanujan's theta functions $ψ(q)$ and $f(-q)$, respectively. Then as applications, we find many infinite family of congruences modulo 2 for some $\ell$-regular partition functions, especially, for $\ell=2,4,5,8,13,16$. Moreover, based on the classical congruences for $p(n)$ given by Ramanujan, we obtain many more congruences for some $\ell$-regular partition functions.
Let $\mathrm{pod}_{-4}(n)$ denote the number of partition quadruples of $n$ where the odd parts in each partition are distinct. We find many arithmetic properties of $\mathrm{pod}_{-4}(n)$ involving the following infinite family of congruences: for any integers $α\ge 1$ and $n \ge 0$, \[\mathrm{pod}_{-4}\Big({{3}^{α+1}}n+\frac{5\cdot {{3}^{α}}+1}{2}\Big)\equiv 0 \pmod{9}.\] We also establish some internal congruences and some congruences modulo 2, 5 and 8 satisfied by $\mathrm{pod}_{-4}(n)$.
Let $a(n)$ defined by $\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}a(n)q^n := \prod_{n=1}^{\infty}\frac{1}{(1-q^{3n})(1-q^n)^3}.$ In this note, we prove that for every non-negative integer $n$, a(15n+6) \equiv 0\pmod{5}, a(15n+12) \equiv 0\pmod{5}. As a corollary, we obtained some results of Ono
We extend recent results of Ono and Raji, relating the number of self-conjugate $7$-core partitions to Hurwitz class numbers. Furthermore, we give a combinatorial explanation for the curious equality $2\operatorname{sc}_7(8n+1) = \operatorname{c}_4(7n+2)$. We also conjecture that an equality of this shape holds if and only if $t=4$, proving the cases $t\in\{2,3,5\}$ and giving partial results for $t>5$.
For all positive integers $k,l,n$, the Little Glaisher theorem states that the number of partitions of $n$ into parts not divisible by $k$ and occurring less than $l$ times is equal to the number of partitions of $n$ into parts not divisible by $l$ and occurring less than $k$ times. While this refinement of Glaisher theorem is easy to establish by computation of the generating function, there is still no one-to-one canonical correspondence explaining it. Our paper brings an answer to this open problem through an arithmetical approach. Furthermore, in the case $l=2$, we discuss the possibility …
We present a natural multiplicative theory of integer partitions (which are usually considered in terms of addition), and find many theorems of classical number theory arise as particular cases of extremely general combinatorial structure laws. We then see that the relatively recently-defined $q$-bracket operator $\left<f\right>_q$, studied by Bloch-Okounkov, Zagier, and others for its quasimodular properties, plays a deep role in the theory of partitions, quite apart from questions of modularity. Moreover, we give an explicit formula for the coefficients of $\left<f\right>_q$ for any function…
In earlier work generalizing a 1977 theorem of Alladi, the authors proved a partition-theoretic formula to compute arithmetic densities of certain subsets of the positive integers $\mathbb N$ as limiting values of $q$-series as $q\to ζ$ a root of unity (instead of using the usual Dirichlet series to compute densities), replacing multiplicative structures of $\mathbb N$ by analogous structures in the integer partitions $\mathcal P$. In recent work, Wang obtains a wide generalization of Alladi's original theorem, in which arithmetic densities of subsets of prime numbers are computed as values of…
Motivated by a question of Lovejoy \cite{lovejoy}, we show that three-colored Frobenius partition function $\c3$ and related arithmetic fuction $\cc3$ vanish modulo some powers of 5 in certain arithmetic progressions.
If $\gcd(r,t)=1$, then a theorem of Alladi offers the Möbius sum identity $$-\sum_{\substack{ n \geq 2 \\ p_{\rm{min}}(n) \equiv r \pmod{t}}} μ(n)n^{-1}= \frac{1}{φ(t)}. $$ Here $p_{\rm{min}}(n)$ is the smallest prime divisor of $n$. The right-hand side represents the proportion of primes in a fixed arithmetic progression modulo $t$. Locus generalized this to Chebotarev densities for Galois extensions. Answering a question of Alladi, we obtain analogs of these results to arithmetic densities of subsets of positive integers using $q$-series and integer partitions. For suitable subsets $§$ of th…
We study M(n,k,r), the number of orbits of {(a_1,...,a_k)\in Z_n^k | a_1+...+a_k = r (mod n)} under the action of S_k. Equivalently, M(n,k,r) sums the partition numbers of an arithmetic sequence: M(n,k,r) = sum_{t \geq 0} p(n-1,k,r+nt), where p(a,b,t) denotes the number of partitions of t into at most b parts, each of which is at most a. We derive closed formulas and various identities for such arithmetic partition sums. These results have already appeared in Elashvili/Jibladze/Pataraia, Combinatorics of necklaces and "Hermite reciprocity", J. Alg. Combin. 10 (1999) 173-188, and the main resul…
Using a new graphical representation for partitions, the author obtains a family of partition identities associated with partitions into distinct parts of an arithmetic progression, or, more generally, with partitions into distinct parts of a set that is a finite union of arithmetic progressions associated with a modular sum-free Sidon set. Partition identities are also constructed for sets associated with modular sum-free sets.
The aim of this note is to provoke discussion concerning arithmetic properties of function $p_{d}(n)$ counting partitions of an positive integer $n$ into $d$-th powers, where $d\geq 2$. Besides results concerning the asymptotic behavior of $p_{d}(n)$ a little is known. In the first part of the paper, we prove certain congruences involving functions counting various types of partitions into $d$-th powers. The second part of the paper has experimental nature and contains questions and conjectures concerning arithmetic behavior of the sequence $(p_{d}(n))_{n\in\N}$. They based on our computations…
In this Ph.D. dissertation (2018, Emory University) we prove theorems at the intersection of the additive and multiplicative branches of number theory, bringing together ideas from partition theory, $q$-series, algebra, modular forms and analytic number theory. We present a natural multiplicative theory of integer partitions (which are usually considered in terms of addition), and explore new classes of partition-theoretic zeta functions and Dirichlet series -- as well as "Eulerian" $q$-hypergeometric series -- enjoying many interesting relations. We find a number of theorems of classical numb…
Let $p_t(a,b;n)$ denote the number of partitions of $n$ such that the number of $t$ hooks is congruent to $a \bmod{b}$. For $t\in \{2, 3\}$, arithmetic progressions $r_1 \bmod{m_1}$ and $r_2 \bmod{m_2}$ on which $p_t(r_1,m_1; m_2 n + r_2)$ vanishes were established in recent work by Bringmann, Craig, Males, and Ono using the theory of modular forms. Here we offer a direct combinatorial proof of this result using abaci and the theory of $t$-cores and $t$-quotients.
We consider the {\em Shaped Partition Problem} of partitioning $n$ given vectors in real $k$-space into $p$ parts so as to maximize an arbitrary objective function which is convex on the sum of vectors in each part, subject to arbitrary constraints on the number of elements in each part. In addressing this problem, we study the {\em Shaped Partition Polytope} defined as the convex hull of solutions. The Shaped Partition Problem captures ${\cal N}{\cal P}$-hard problems such as the Max-Cut problem and the Traveling Salesperson problem, and the Shaped Partition Polytope may have exponentially ma…
Multiranks and new rank/crank analogs for a variety of partitions are given, so as to imply combinatorially some arithmetic properties enjoyed by these types of partitions. Our methods are elementary relying entirely on the three classical theta functions, and are motivated by the seminal work of Ramanujan, Garvan, Hammond and Lewis.
Distance-based methods such as UPGMA (Unweighted Pair Group Method with Arithmetic Mean) continue to play a significant role in phylogenetic research. We use polyhedral combinatorics to analyze the natural subdivision of the positive orthant induced by classifying the input vectors according to tree topologies returned by the algorithm. The partition lattice informs the study of UPGMA trees. We give a closed form for the extreme rays of UPGMA cones on n taxa, and compute the normalized volumes of the UPGMA cones for small n. Keywords: phylogenetic trees, polyhedral combinatorics, partition lat…
