Using a new graphical representation for partitions, the author obtains a family of partition identities associated with partitions into distinct parts of an arithmetic progression, or, more generally, with partitions into distinct parts of a set that is a finite union of arithmetic progressions associated with a modular sum-free Sidon set. Partition identities are also constructed for sets associated with modular sum-free sets.
In this note, we report on the results of a computer search performed to find possible modular companions to certain $q$-series identities and conjectures. For the search, we use conditions arising from the asymptotics of Nahm sums. We focus on two sets of identities: Capparelli's identities, and certain partition conjectures made by the author jointly with Matthew C. Russell.
We prove hypergeometric type identities for a function defined in terms of quotients of the $p$-adic gamma function. We use these identities to prove a supercongruence conjecture of Rodriguez-Villegas between a truncated $_4F_3$ hypergeometric series and the Fourier coefficients of certain weight four modular form.
We give unified modular proofs to all of Gosper's identities on the $q$-constant $Π_q$. We also confirm Gosper's observation that for any distinct positive integers $n_1,\cdots,n_m$ with $m\geq 3$, $Π_{q^{n_1}}$, $\cdots$, $Π_{q^{n_m}}$ satisfy a nonzero homogeneous polynomial. Our proofs provide a method to rediscover Gosper's identities. Meanwhile, several results on $Π_q$ found by El Bachraoui have been corrected. Furthermore, we illustrate a strategy to construct some of Gosper's identities using hauptmoduls for genus zero congruence subgroups.
This paper is concerned with a class of partition functions $a(n)$ introduced by Radu and defined in terms of eta-quotients. By utilizing the transformation laws of Newman, Schoeneberg and Robins, and Radu's algorithms, we present an algorithm to find Ramanujan-type identities for $a(mn+t)$. While this algorithm is not guaranteed to succeed, it applies to many cases. For example, we deduce a witness identity for $p(11n+6)$ with integer coefficients. Our algorithm also leads to Ramanujan-type identities for the overpartition functions $\overline{p}(5n+2)$ and $\overline{p}(5n+3)$ and Andrews--P…

We prove that amongst all real quadratic fields and all spaces of Hilbert modular forms of full level and of weight $2$ or greater, the product of two Hecke eigenforms is not a Hecke eigenform except for finitely many real quadratic fields and finitely many weights. We show that for $\mathbb Q(\sqrt 5)$ there are exactly two such identities.
Higher genus modular graph tensors map Feynman graphs to functions on the Torelli space of genus-$h$ compact Riemann surfaces which transform as tensors under the modular group $Sp(2h , \mathbb Z)$, thereby generalizing a construction of Kawazumi. An infinite family of algebraic identities between one-loop and tree-level modular graph tensors are proven for arbitrary genus and arbitrary tensorial rank. We also derive a family of identities that apply to modular graph tensors of higher loop order.
To every $k$-dimensional modular invariant vector space we associate a modular form on $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ of weight $2k$. We explore number theoretic properties of this form and find a sufficient condition for its vanishing which yields modular identities (e.g., Ramanujan-Watson's modular identities). Furthermore, we focus on a family of modular invariant spaces coming from suitable two-dimensional spaces via the symmetric power construction. In particular, we consider a two-dimensional space spanned by graded dimensions of certain level one modules for the affine Kac-Moody Lie algebra of type…
This paper investigates the relations between modular graph forms, which are generalizations of the modular graph functions that were introduced in earlier papers motivated by the structure of the low energy expansion of genus-one Type II superstring amplitudes. These modular graph forms are multiple sums associated with decorated Feynman graphs on the world-sheet torus. The action of standard differential operators on these modular graph forms admits an algebraic representation on the decorations. First order differential operators are used to map general non-holomorphic modular graph functio…
Using holomorphic projection, we work out a parametrization for all relations of products (resp. Rankin-Cohen brackets) of weight $\tfrac 32$ mock modular forms with holomorphic shadow and weight $\tfrac 12$ modular forms in the spirit of the Kronecker-Hurwitz class number relations. In particular we obtain new proofs for several class number relations among which some are classical, others are relatively new. We also obtain similar results for the mock theta functions.
Borisov and Gunnells observed in 2001 that certain linear relations between products of two holomorphic weight 1 Eisenstein series had the same structure as the relations between periods of modular forms; a similar phenomenon exists in higher weights. We give a conceptual reason for this observation in arbitrary weight. This involves an unconventional way of expanding the Rankin-Selberg convolution of a cusp form with an Eisenstein series. We also prove a partial result towards understanding the action of a Hecke operator on a product of two Eisenstein series.
We prove that the ancestor Gromov-Witten correlation functions of one-dimensional compact Calabi-Yau orbifolds are quasi-modular forms. This includes the pillowcase orbifold which can not yet be handled by using Milanov-Ruan's B-model technique. We first show that genus zero modularity is obtained from the phenomenon that the system of WDVV equations is essentially equivalent to the set of Ramanujan identities satisfied by the generators of the ring of quasi-modular forms for a certain modular group associated to the orbifold curve. Higher genus modularity then follows by using tautological re…
The low energy expansion of Type II superstring amplitudes at genus one is organized in terms of modular graph functions associated with Feynman graphs of a conformal scalar field on the torus. In earlier work, surprising identities between two-loop graphs at all weights, and between higher-loop graphs of weights four and five were constructed. In the present paper, these results are generalized in two complementary directions. First, all identities at weight six and all dihedral identities at weight seven are obtained and proven. Whenever the Laurent polynomial at the cusp is available, the f…
From the theory of modular forms, there are exactly $[(k-2)/6]$ linear relations among the Eisenstein series $E_k$ and its products $E_{2i}E_{k-2i}\ (2\le i \le [k/4])$. We present explicit formulas among these modular forms based on the partial fraction decomposition, and use them to determining a basis of the space of modular forms of weight $k$ on ${\rm SL}_2({\mathbb Z})$.
The study of Fourier coefficients of meromorphic modular forms dates back to Ramanujan, who, together with Hardy, studied the reciprocal of the weight 6 Eisenstein series. Ramanujan conjectured a number of further identities for other meromorphic modular forms and quasi-modular forms which were subsequently established by Berndt, Bialek, and Yee. In this paper, we place these identities into the context of a larger family by making use of Poincaré series introduced by Petersson and a new family of Poincaré series which we construct here and which are of independent interest. In addition we est…
Elliptic modular graph functions and forms (eMGFs) are defined for arbitrary graphs as natural generalizations of modular graph functions and forms obtained by including the character of an Abelian group in their Kronecker--Eisenstein series. The simplest examples of eMGFs are given by the Green function for a massless scalar field on the torus and the Zagier single-valued elliptic polylogarithms. More complicated eMGFs are produced by the non-separating degeneration of a higher genus surface to a genus one surface with punctures. eMGFs may equivalently be represented by multiple integrals ove…
Building on the works of S. Bochner on equivalence of modular relation with functional equation associated to the Dirichlet series, K. Chandrasekharan and R. Narasimhan obtained new equivalences between the functional equation and some arithmetical identities. Sister Ann M. Heath considered the functional equation in the Hawkins and Knopp context and showed its equivalence to two arithmetical identities associated with entire modular cusp integrals involving rational period functions for the full modular group. In this paper we use techniques of Chandrasekharan and Narasimhan and extend the re…
We prove Rogers-Ramanujan type identities for the Nahm sums associated with the tadpole Cartan matrix of rank $3$. These identities reveal the modularity of these sums, and thereby we confirm a conjecture of Penn, Calinescu and the first author in this case. We show that these Nahm sums together with some shifted sums can be combined into a vector-valued modular function on the full modular group. We also present some conjectures for a general rank.
Let S and T be sets of positive integers and let a be a fixed positive integer. An a-shifted partition identity has the form p(S,n)=p(T,n-a), for all n greater or equal to a. Here p(S,n) is the number partitions of n whose parts are elements of S. For all known nontrivial shifted partition identities, the sets S and T are unions of arithmetic progressions modulo M for some M. In 1987, Andrews found two 1-shifted examples (M=32, 40) and asked whether there were any more. In 1989, Kalvade responded with a further six. In 2000, the first author found 59 new 1-shifted identities using a computer s…
In this paper we establish certain identities connecting $p$-adic hypergeometric functions with 4-th twisted Kloosterman sheaf sum. To prove these identities we express certain character sum over finite field in terms of special values of $p$-adic hypergeometric functions. One conjecture of Evans behaves as a bridge to connect $p$-adic hypergeometric functions with Kloosterman sheaf sum. We also connect $p$-adic hypergeometric functions with Fourier coefficients of certain modular forms.
We establish two binomial coefficient--generalized harmonic sum identities using the partial fraction decomposition method. These identities are a key ingredient in the proofs of numerous supercongruences. In particular, in other works of the author, they are used to establish modulo $p^k$ ($k>1$) congruences between truncated generalized hypergeometric series, and a function which extends Greene's hypergeometric function over finite fields to the $p$-adic setting. A specialization of one of these congruences is used to prove an outstanding conjecture of Rodriguez-Villegas which relates a trun…
We propose three kinds of explicit formulas for the elliptic lambda function by the elliptic modular function. Further, we derive incredible cubic identities as a corollary of our explicit formulas and evaluate some singular values of the elliptic lambda function explicitly.
A q-series with nonnegative power series coefficients is called positive. The partition statistics BG-rank is defined as an alternating sum of parities of parts of a partition. It is known that the generating function for the number of partitions of n that are 7-cores with given BG-rank can be written as certain sum of multi-theta functions. We give explicit representations for these generating functions in terms of sums of positive eta-quotients and derive inequalities for the their coefficients. New identities for the generating function of unrestricted 7-cores and inequalities for their coe…
We describe a general method to determine the Apery limits of a differential equation that have a modular-function origin. As a by-product of our analysis, we discover a family of identities involving the special values of L-functions associated with modular forms. The proof of these identities is independent of differential equations and Apery limits.
The mock theta conjectures are ten identities involving Ramanujan's fifth-order mock theta functions. The conjectures were proven by Hickerson in 1988 using q-series methods. Using methods from the theory of harmonic Maass forms, specifically work of Zwegers and Bringmann-Ono, Folsom reduced the proof of the mock theta conjectures to a finite computation. Both of these approaches involve proving the identities individually, relying on work of Andrews-Garvan. Here we give a unified proof of the mock theta conjectures by realizing them as an equality between two nonholomorphic vector-valued modu…
We use Rankin-Cohen brackets for modular forms and quasimodular forms to give a different proof of the results obtained by D. Lanphier and D. Niebur on the van der Pol type identities for the Ramanujan's tau function. As consequences we obtain convolution sums and congruence relations involving the divisor functions.
The two Rogers-Ramanujan $q$-series \[ \sum_{n=0}^{\infty}\frac{q^{n(n+σ)}}{(1-q)\cdots (1-q^n)}, \] where $σ=0,1$, play many roles in mathematics and physics. By the Rogers-Ramanujan identities, they are essentially modular functions. Their quotient, the Rogers-Ramanujan continued fraction, has the special property that its singular values are algebraic integral units. We find a framework which extends the Rogers-Ramanujan identities to doubly-infinite families of $q$-series identities. If $a\in\{1,2\}$ and $m,n\geq 1$, then we have \[ \sum_{\substack{λλ_1\leq m}} q^{a|λ|} P_{2λ}(1,q,q^2,\dot…
In our previous paper, we determined a unified combinatorial framework to look at a large number of colored partition identities, and studied the five identities corresponding to the exceptional modular equations of prime degree of the Schroeter, Russell and Ramanujan type. The goal of this paper is to use the master bijection of our previous work to show combinatorially several new and highly nontrivial colored partition identities. We conclude by listing a number of further interesting identities of the same type as conjectures.
Applying the theory of modular forms and Lambert series manipulations we establish an Eisenstein series identity. From this formula we confirm a Lambert series identity conjectured by Gosper. Another Lambert series identity of Gosper is also confirmed by using Lambert series manipulations.
By considering a limiting form of the q-Dixon_4ϕ_3 summation, we prove a weighted partition theorem involving odd parts differing by >= 4. A two parameter refinement of this theorem is then deduced from a quartic reformulation of Goellnitz's (Big) theorem due to Alladi, and this leads to a two parameter extension of Jacobi's triple product identity for theta functions. Finally, refinements of certain modular identities of Alladi connected to the Goellnitz-Gordon series are shown to follow from a limiting form of the q-Dixon_4ϕ_3 summation.
We prove new double summation hypergeometric $q$-series representations for several families of partitions, including those that appear in the famous product identities of Göllnitz, Gordon, and Schur. We give several different proofs for our results, using bijective partitions mappings and modular diagrams, the theory of $q$-difference equations and recurrences, and the theories of summation and transformation for $q$-series. We also consider a general family of similar double series and highlight a number of other interesting special cases.
We record $$ \binom{42}2+\binom{23}2+\binom{13}2=1192 $$ functional identities that, apart from being amazingly amusing by themselves, find applications in derivation of Ramanujan-type formulas for $1/π$ and in computation of mathematical constants.
Modular graph forms (MGFs) are a class of non-holomorphic modular forms which naturally appear in the low-energy expansion of closed-string genus-one amplitudes and have generated considerable interest from pure mathematicians. MGFs satisfy numerous non-trivial algebraic- and differential relations which have been studied extensively in the literature and lead to significant simplifications. In this paper, we systematically combine these relations to obtain basis decompositions of all two- and three-point MGFs of total modular weight $w+\bar{w}\leq12$, starting from just two well-known identit…
We provide a general and unified combinatorial framework for a number of colored partition identities, which include the five, recently proved analytically by B. Berndt, that correspond to the exceptional modular equations of prime degree due to H. Schroeter, R. Russell and S. Ramanujan. Our approach generalizes that of S. Kim, who has given a bijective proof for two of these five identities, namely the ones modulo 7 (also known as the Farkas-Kra identity) and modulo 3. As a consequence of our method, we determine bijective proofs also for the two highly nontrivial identities modulo 5 and 11, …
In 2001 W. Gosper introduced a constant Pi_{q} and conjectured without proofs many intriguing identities on this constant. In this paper we establish some modular equations of degrees 3 and 5. From these modular equations we confirm two groups of Pi_{q}-identities in Gosper's list. One group involves Pi_{q},Pi_{q^{2}},Pi_{q^{3}} or Pi_{q^{6}} while the other is related to Pi_{q},Pi_{q^{2}},Pi_{q^{5}} or Pi_{q^{10}}.
Modular graph functions associate to a graph an $SL(2,Z)$-invariant function on the upper half plane. We obtain the Fourier series of modular graph functions of arbitrary weight $w$ and two-loop order. The motivation for this work is to develop a deeper understanding of the origin of the algebraic identities between modular graph functions which have been discovered recently, and of the relation between the existence of these identities and the occurrence of cusp forms. We show that the constant Fourier mode, as a function of the modulus $τ$, consists of a Laurent polynomial in $y = π\, {\rm I…
