Newton-Hooke group is the nonrelativistic limit of de Sitter (anti-de Sitter) group, which can be enlarged with transformations that describe constant acceleration, as well as central charges. We consider a higher order Lagrangian that is quasi-invariant under the acceleration-extended Newton-Hooke symmetry, and obtain the Schrödinger equation quantizing the Hamiltonian corresponding to its first order form. We show that the Schrödinger equation is invariant under the acceleration-extended Newton-Hooke transformations. We also discuss briefly the exotic conformal Newton-Hooke symmetry in 2+1 dimension.
Based on the Beltrami-de Sitter spacetime, we present the Newton-Hooke model under the Newton-Hooke contraction of the $BdS$ spacetime with respect to the transformation group, algebra and geometry. It is shown that in Newton-Hooke space-time, there are inertial-type coordinate systems and inertial-type observers, which move along straight lines with uniform velocity. And they are invariant under the Newton-Hooke group. In order to determine uniquely the Newton-Hooke limit, we propose the Galilei-Hooke's relativity principle as well as the postulate on Newton-Hooke universal time. All results …
We focus on the dynamical aspects of Newton-Hooke space-time ${\cal NH}_+$ mainly from the viewpoint of geometric contraction of the de Sitter spacetime. We first discuss the Newton-Hooke classical mechanics, especially the continuous medium mechanics, in this framework. Then, we establish a consistent theory of gravity on the Newton-Hooke space-time as a kind of Newton-Cartan-like theory, parallel to the Newton's gravity in the Galilei space-time. Finally, we give the Newton-Hooke invariant Schrödinger equation from the geometric contraction, where we can relate the conservative probability i…
We construct the electric and magnetic Newton-Hooke and Carroll Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity theories using the isomorphism of Newton-Hooke$_\pm$ and (A-)dS Carroll algebras in $(1+1)$-spacetime dimensions. The starting point is the non-relativistic and Carroll version of Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity without restrictions on the geometry studied in [15].
The Newton-Hooke algebras in d dimensions are constructed as contractions of dS(AdS) algebras. Non-relativistic brane actions are WZ terms of these Newton-Hooke algebras. The NH algebras appear also as subalgebras of multi-temporal relativistic conformal algebras, SO(d+1, p+2). We construct generalizations of pp-wave metrics from these algebras.
Conformal many-body mechanics in Newton-Hooke spacetime is studied within the framework of the Lagrangian formalism. Global symmetries and Noether charges are given in a form convenient for analyzing the flat space limit. N=2 superconformal extension is built and a new class on N=2 models related to simple Lie algebras is presented. A decoupling similarity transformation on N=2 quantum mechanics in Newton-Hooke spacetime is discussed.
A representation of the conformal Newton-Hooke algebra on a phase space of n particles in arbitrary dimension which interact with one another via a generic conformal potential and experience a universal cosmological repulsion or attraction is constructed. The minimal N=2 superconformal extension of the Newton-Hooke algebra and its dynamical realization in many-body mechanics are studied.
We construct five new quantum Newton-Hooke Hopf algebras with the use of Abelian twist procedure. Further we demonstrate that the corresponding deformed space-times with quantum space and classical time are periodic or expanding in time.
We investigate the planar anisotropic harmonic oscillator with explicit rotational symmetry as a particle model with non-commutative coordinates. It includes the exotic Newton-Hooke particle and the non-commutative Landau problem as special, isotropic and maximally anisotropic, cases. The system is described by the same (2+1)-dimensional exotic Newton-Hooke symmetry as in the isotropic case, and develops three different phases depending on the values of the two central charges. The special cases of the exotic Newton-Hooke particle and non-commutative Landau problem are shown to be characterize…
We define the model of hydrogen atom for twist-deformed acceleration-enlarged Newton-Hooke space-time. Further, using time-dependent perturbation theory, we find in first step of iteration procedure the solution of corresponding Schroedinger equation as well as the probability of transition between two different energy-eigenstates.
We provide the quantum mechanics of many particles moving in twisted N-enlarged Newton-Hooke space-time. In particular, we consider the example of such noncommutative system - the set of M particles moving in Coulomb field of external point-like source and interacting each other also by Coulomb potential.
The rotation-less Newton--Hooke - type symmetry found recently in the Hill problem and instrumental for explaining the center-of-mass decomposition is generalized to an arbitrary anisotropic oscillator in the plane. Conversely, the latter system is shown, by the orbit method, to be the most general one with such a symmetry. Full Newton-Hooke symmetry is recovered in the isotropic case. Star escape from a Galaxy is studied as application.
We derive the energy levels for oscillator model defined on the twisted N-enlarged Newton-Hooke space-time, i.e., we find time-dependent eigenvalues and corresponding time-dependent eigenstates. We also demonstrate that for a particular choice of deformation parameters of phase space the above spectrum can be identified with the time-dependent Landau one.
A particle system with a (2+1)D exotic Newton-Hooke symmetry is constructed by the method of nonlinear realization. It has three essentially different phases depending on the values of the two central charges. The subcritical and supercritical phases (describing 2D isotropic ordinary and exotic oscillators) are separated by the critical phase (one-mode oscillator), and are related by a duality transformation. In the flat limit, the system transforms into a free Galilean exotic particle on the noncommutative plane. The wave equations carrying projective representations of the exotic Newton-Hook…
We construct Chern-Simons gravities in $(2+1)$-dimensional space-time considering the Stringy Galilei algebra both with and without non-central extensions. In the first case, there is an invariant and non-degenerate bilinear form, however, the field equations do not allow to express the spin connections in terms of the dreibeins. In the second case, there is no invariant non-degenerate bilinear form. Therefore, in both cases, we do not have an ordinary gravity theory. Instead, if we consider the stringy Newton-Hooke algebra with extensions as gauge group we have an invariant non-degenerate met…
We provide a systematic analysis of three-dimensional N = 2 extended Bargmann superalgebra and its Newton-Hooke, Lifshitz and Schrödinger extensions. These algebras admit invariant non-degenerate bi-linear forms which we utilized to construct corresponding Chern-Simons supergravity actions.
We examine a non-relativistic limit of D-branes in AdS_5xS^5 and M-branes in AdS_{4/7}xS^{7/4}. First, Newton-Hooke superalgebras for the AdS branes are derived from AdSxS superalgebras as Inonu-Wigner contractions. It is shown that the directions along which the AdS-brane worldvolume extends are restricted by requiring that the isometry on the AdS-brane worldvolume and the Lorentz symmetry in the transverse space naturally extend to the super-isometry. We also derive Newton-Hooke superalgebras for pp-wave branes and show that the directions along which a brane worldvolume extends are restrict…
We construct finite- and infinite-dimensional non-relativistic extensions of the Newton-Hooke and Carroll (A)dS algebras using the algebra expansion method, starting from the (anti-)de Sitter relativistic algebra in D dimensions. These algebras are also shown to be embedded in different affine Kac-Moody algebras. In the three-dimensional case, we construct Chern-Simons actions invariant under these symmetries. This leads to a sequence of non-relativistic gravity theories, where the simplest examples correspond to extended Newton-Hooke and extended (post-)Newtonian gravity together with their C…
Newton-Hooke space-times are the non-relativistic limit of (anti-)de Sitter space-times. We investigate some peculiar facts about the Newton-Hooke space-times, among which the "extraordinary Newton-Hooke quantum mechanics" and the "anomalous Newton-Hooke space-times" are discussed in detail. Analysis on the Lagrangian/action formalism is performed in the discussion of the Newton-Hooke quantum mechanics, where the path integral point of view plays an important role, and the physically measurable density of probability is clarified.
We provide fifteen twist-deformed doubly enlarged Newton-Hooke quantum space-times. In $τ$ approaching infinity limit the twisted doubly enlarged Galilei spaces are obtained as well.
A covariant formulation for the Newton-Hooke particle is presented by following an algorithm developed by us \cite{BMM1, BMM2, BMM3}. It naturally leads to a coupling with the Newton-Cartan geometry. From this result we provide an understanding of gravitation in a Newtonian geometric background. Using Dirac's constrained analysis a canonical formulation for the Newton-Hooke covariant action is done in both gauge independent and gauge fixed approaches. While the former helps in identifying the various symmetries of the model, the latter is able to define the physical variables. From this analys…
We derive the Landau energy levels for twisted N-enlarged Newton-Hooke space-time, i.e. we find the time-dependent energy spectrum and the corresponding eigenstates for an electron moving in uniform magnetic as well as in uniform electric external fields.
Ten Abelian twist deformations of acceleration-enlarged Newton-Hooke Hopf algebra are considered. The corresponding quantum space-times are derived as well. It is demonstrate that their contraction limit $τ\to \infty$ leads to the new twisted acceleration-enlarged Galilei spaces.
The l-conformal extension of the Newton-Hooke algebra proposed in [J. Math. Phys. 38 (1997) 3810] is formulated in the basis in which the flat space limit is unambiguous. Admissible central charges are specified. The infinite-dimensional Virasoro-Kac-Moody type extension is given.
It is demonstrated that the Pais-Uhlenbeck oscillator in arbitrary dimension enjoys the l-conformal Newton-Hooke symmetry provided frequencies of oscillation form the arithmetic sequence omega_k=(2k-1) omega_1, where k=1,...,n, and l is the half-integer (2n-1)/2. The model is shown to be maximally superintegrable. A link to n decoupled isotropic oscillators is discussed and an interplay between the l-conformal Newton-Hooke symmetry and symmetries characterizing each individual isotropic oscillator is analyzed.
The method of nonlinear realizations and the technique previously developed in arXiv:1208.1403 are used to construct a dynamical system without higher derivative terms, which holds invariant under the l-conformal Newton-Hooke group. A configuration space of the model involves coordinates, which parametrize a particle moving in d spatial dimensions and a conformal mode, which gives rise to an effective external field. The dynamical system describes a generalized multi-dimensional oscillator, which undergoes accelerated/decelerated motion in an ellipse in accord with evolution of the conformal mo…
In this thesis some systems with exotic symmetries, which are a peculiarity in 2+1 space-time dimensions, are studied. Coded in the exotic structure, there appear noncommutative coordinates and a phases structure. This kind of systems has attracted attention from different areas of physics independently. Among them, we can mention: theory of ray representations of Lie groups, anyon physics, some condensed matter systems, for instance the quantum Hall effect, planar gauge and gravitation theories, noncommutative field theory, noncommutative geometry, and noncommutative quantum mechanics. We foc…
Finite-dimensional nonrelativistic conformal Lie algebras spanned by polynomial vector fields of Galilei spacetime arise if the dynamical exponent is z=2/N with N=1,2,.... Their underlying group structure and matrix representation are constructed (up to a covering) by means of the Veronese map of degree N. Suitable quotients of the conformal Galilei groups provide us with Newton-Hooke nonrelativistic spacetimes with a quantized reduced negative cosmological constant λ=-N.
By applying Niederer--like transformation, we construct a representation of the N=2 l-conformal Newton-Hooke superalgebra for the case of a negative cosmological constant in terms of linear differential operators as well as its dynamical realization. Another variant of N=2 supersymmetric Pais-Uhlenbeck oscillator for a particular choice of its frequencies is proposed. The advantages of such realizations as compared to their analogues introduced in [J. Math. Phys. 53 (2012) 072904], [J. Math. Phys. 56 (2015) 022902] are discussed.
We show explicitly how the Newton-Hooke groups act as symmetries of the equations of motion of non-relativistic cosmological models with a cosmological constant. We give the action on the associated non-relativistic spacetimes and show how these may be obtained from a null reduction of 5-dimensional homogeneous pp-wave Lorentzian spacetimes. This allows us to realize the Newton-Hooke groups and their Bargmann type central extensions as subgroups of the isometry groups of the pp-wave spacetimes. The extended Schrodinger type conformal group is identified and its action on the equations of motio…
Dynamical systems invariant under the action of the l-conformal Newton-Hooke algebras are constructed by the method of nonlinear realizations. The relevant first order Lagrangians together with the corresponding Hamiltonians are found. The relation to the Galajinsky and Masterov [Phys. Lett. B 723 (2013) 190] approach as well as the higher derivatives formulation is discussed. The generalized Niederer's transformation are presented which relate the systems under consideration to those invariant under the action of the l-conformal Galilei algebra [Nucl. Phys. B 876 (2013) 309]. As a nice applic…
Hill's equations, which first arose in the study of the Earth-Moon-Sun system, admit the two-parameter centrally extended Newton-Hooke symmetry without rotations. This symmetry allows for extending Kohn's theorem about the center-of-mass decomposition. Particular light is shed on the problem using Duval's "Bargmann" framework. The separation of the center-of-mass motion into that of a guiding center and relative motion is derived by a generalized chiral decomposition.
We show that the Extended Bargmann and Newton-Hooke algebras in 2+1 dimensions can be obtained as expansions of the Nappi-Witten algebra. The result can be generalized to obtain two infinite families of non-relativistic symmetries, which include the Maxwellian Exotic Bargmann symmetry, its generalized Newton-Hooke counterpart, and its Hietarinta dual. In each case, the invariant bilinear form on the Nappi-Witten algebra leads to the invariant tensor on the expanded algebra, allowing one to construct the corresponding Chern-Simons gravity theory.
We consider non-relativistic electrons, each of the same charge to mass ratio, moving in an external magnetic field with an interaction potential depending only on the mutual separations, possibly confined by a harmonic trapping potential. We show that the system admits a "relativity group" which is a one-parameter family of deformations of the standard Galilei group to the Newton-Hooke group which is a Wigner-Inonu contraction of the de Sitter group. This allows a group-theoretic interpretation of Kohn's theorem and related results. Larmor's Theorem is used to show that the one-parameter fami…
We present non- and ultra-relativistic Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) supergravity as metric BF theories based on the extended Newton-Hooke and extended AdS Carroll superalgebras in two spacetime dimensions, respectively. The extended Newton-Hooke structure, and, in particular, the invariant metric necessary for the BF construction of non-relativistic JT supergravity, is obtained by performing an expansion of the $\mathcal{N}=2$ AdS$_2$ superalgebra. Subsequently, we introduce the extended AdS$_2$ Carroll superalgebra, and the associated invariant metric, as a suitable redefinition of the extended New…
In this work we present a non-relativistic gravity theory defined in four spacetime dimensions using the MacDowell-Mansouri geometrical formulation. We obtain a Newtonian gravity action which is constructed from the curvature of a Newton-Hooke version of the so-called Newtonian algebra. We show that the non-relativistic gravity theory presented here contains the Poisson equation in presence of a cosmological constant. Moreover we make contact with the Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) approach for gravity by considering a particular ansatz for a given gauge field. We extend our results to a g…
We compare two ways of force terms generating in the model of nonrelativistic particle moving in the presence of constant field force $\vec{F}$. First of them uses the twist-deformed acceleration-enlarged Newton-Hooke quantum space-times while the second one incorporates the doubly enlarged Newton-Hooke transformations of classical space. Particulary, we find the conditions for which the both treatments provide the same force terms.
$N$ "exotic" [alias non-commutative] particles with masses $m_a$, charges $e_a$ and non-commutative parameters $θ_a$, moving in a uniform magnetic field $B$, separate into center-of-mass and internal motions if Kohn's condition $e_a/m_a=\const$ is supplemented with $e_aθ_a=\const.$ Then the center-of-mass behaves as a single exotic particle carrying the total mass and charge of the system, $M$ and $e$, and a suitably defined non-commutative parameter $Θ$. For vanishing electric field off the critical case $eΘB\neq1$, the particles perform the usual cyclotronic motion with modified but equal fr…
In two recent papers [N. Aizawa, Y. Kimura, J. Segar, J. Phys. A 46 (2013) 405204] and [N. Aizawa, Z. Kuznetsova, F. Toppan, J. Math. Phys. 56 (2015) 031701], representation theory of the centrally extended l-conformal Galilei algebra with half-integer l has been applied so as to construct second order differential equations exhibiting the corresponding group as kinematical symmetry. It was suggested to treat them as the Schrodinger equations which involve Hamiltonians describing dynamical systems without higher derivatives. The Hamiltonians possess two unusual features, however. First, they i…
Using simple algebraic methods along with an analogy to the BFSS model, we explore the possible (target) spacetime symmetries that may appear in a matrix description of de Sitter gravity. Such symmetry groups could arise in two ways, one from an ``IMF'' like construction and the other from a ``DLCQ'' like construction. In contrast to the flat space case, we show that the two constructions will lead to different groups, i.e. the Newton-Hooke group and the inhomogeneous Euclidean group (or its algebraic cousins). It is argued that matrix quantum mechanics based on the former symmetries look more…
Definitions of non-relativistic conformal transformations are considered both in the Newton-Cartan and in the Kaluza-Klein-type Eisenhart/Bargmann geometrical frameworks. The symmetry groups that come into play are exemplified by the cosmological, and also the Newton-Hooke solutions of Newton's gravitational field equations. It is shown, in particular, that the maximal symmetry group of the standard cosmological model is isomorphic to the 13-dimensional conformal-Newton-Cartan group whose conformal-Bargmann extension is explicitly worked out. Attention is drawn to the appearance of independent…
Newtonian gravity was formulated as a geometrodynamic theory as far back in 1930s by Elie Cartan in what is named aptly as Newton Cartan space time. Though there are several approaches of realizing the algebraic structure of the Newton Cartan geometry from a contraction of the relativistic results, a dynamical (field theoretic) realization of it is lacking. In this paper we present such a realization from the localisation of the Galilean Symmetry of nonrelativistic matter field theories.
As was first noted by Isaac Newton, the two most famous ellipses of classical mechanics, arising out of the force laws F~r and F~1/r^2, can be mapped onto each other by changing the location of center-of-force. What is perhaps less well known is that this mapping can also be achieved by the complex transformation, z -> z^2. We give a simple derivation of this result (and its generalization) by writing the Gaussian curvature in its "covariant" form, and then changing the \emph{metric} by a conformal transformation which "mimics" this mapping of the curves. The final result also yields a relatio…
We present a detailed analysis of the construction of $z=2$ and $z\neq2$ scale invariant Hořava-Lifshitz gravity. The construction procedure is based on the realization of Hořava-Lifshitz gravity as the dynamical Newton-Cartan geometry as well as a non-relativistic tensor calculus in the presence of the scale symmetry. An important consequence of this method is that it provides us the necessary mechanism to distinguish the local scale invariance from the local Schrödinger invariance. Based on this result we discuss the $z=2$ scale invariant Hořava-Lifshitz gravity and the symmetry enhancement …
A supersymmetric spin-1/2 particle in the noncommutative plane, subject to an arbitrary magnetic field, is considered, with particular attention paid to the homogeneous case. The system has three different phases, depending on the magnetic field. Due to supersymmetry, the boundary critical phase which separates the sub- and super-critical cases can be viewed as a reduction to the zero-energy eigensubspace. In the sub-critical phase the system is described by the superextension of exotic Newton-Hooke symmetry, combined with the conformal so(2,1) ~ su(1,1) symmetry; the latter is changed into so…
The study of the symmetry of Pais-Uhlenbeck oscillator initiated in [Nucl. Phys. B 885 (2014) 150] is continued with special emphasis put on the Hamiltonian formalism. The symmetry generators within the original Pais and Uhlenbeck Hamiltonian approach as well as the canonical transformation to the Ostrogradski Hamiltonian framework are derived. The resulting algebra of generators appears to be the central extension of the one obtained on the Lagrangian level; in particular, in the case of odd frequencies one obtains the centrally extended l-conformal Newton-Hooke algebra. In this important cas…
Nonrelativistic conformal groups, indexed by l=N/2, are analyzed. Under the assumption that the "mass" parametrizing the central extension is nonvanishing the coadjoint orbits are classified and described in terms of convenient variables. It is shown that the corresponding dynamical system describes, within Ostrogradski framework, the nonrelativistic particle obeying (N+1)-th order equation of motion. As a special case, the Schroedinger group and the standard Newton equations are obtained for N=1 (l=1/2).
