We prove analogues for elliptic interpolation functions of Macdonald's version of the Littlewood identity for (skew) Macdonald polynomials, in the process developing an interpretation of general elliptic "hypergeometric" sums as skew interpolation functions. One such analogue has an interpretation as a "vanishing integral", generalizing a result of arXiv:math/0606204; the structure of this analogue gives sufficient insight to enable us to conjecture elliptic versions of most of the other vanishing integrals of arXiv:math/0606204 as well. We are thus led to formulate ten conjectures, each of which can be viewed as a multivariate quadratic transformation, and can be proved in a number of special cases.
We prove two new summation formulae of Hall-Littlewood polynomials over partitions into bounded parts and derive some new multiple $q$-identities of Rogers-Ramanujan type.
Our results revolve around a new operation on partitions, which we call overlap. We prove two overlap identities for so-called Littlewood-Schur functions. Littlewood-Schur functions are a generalization of Schur functions, whose study was introduced by Littlewood. More concretely, the Littlewood-Schur function $LS_λ(X; Y)$ indexed by the partition $λ$ is a polynomial in the variables $X \cup Y$ that is symmetric in both $X$ and $Y$ separately. The first overlap identity represents $LS _λ(X; Y)$ as a sum over subsets of $X$, while the second overlap identity essentially represents $LS_λ(X; Y)$ …
We prove an identity for Hall--Littlewood symmetric functions labelled by the Lie algebra A_2. Through specialization this yields a simple proof of the A_2 Rogers--Ramanujan identities of Andrews, Schilling and the author.
The Rogers-Ramanujan identities have been studied from the viewpoints of combinatorics, number theory, affine Lie algebras, statistical mechanics, and quantum field theory. This note connects the Rogers-Ramanujan identities with the finite general linear groups and the Hall-Littlewood polynomials of symmetric function theory.
We study Hall-Littlewood polynomials using an integrable lattice model of $t$-deformed bosons. Working with row-to-row transfer matrices, we review the construction of Hall-Littlewood polynomials (of the $A_n$ root system) within the framework of this model. Introducing appropriate double-row transfer matrices, we extend this formalism to Hall-Littlewood polynomials based on the $BC_n$ root system, and obtain a new combinatorial formula for them. We then apply our methods to prove a series of refined Cauchy and Littlewood identities involving Hall-Littlewood polynomials. The last two of these …
We prove two identities of Hall-Littlewood polynomials, which appeared recently in a paper by two of the authors. We also conjecture, and in some cases prove, new identities which relate infinite sums of symmetric polynomials and partition functions associated with symmetry classes of alternating sign matrices. These identities generalize those already found in our earlier paper, via the introduction of additional parameters. The left hand side of each of our identities is a simple refinement of a relevant Cauchy or Littlewood identity. The right hand side of each identity is (one of the two f…
Here we consider the $q$-series coming from the Hall-Littlewood polynomials, \begin{equation*} R_ν(a,b;q)=\sum_{\substack{λ\\[1pt] λ_1\leq a}} q^{c|λ|} P_{2λ}\big(1,q,q^2,\dots;q^{2b+d}\big). \end{equation*} These series were defined by Griffin, Ono, and Warnaar in their work on the framework of the Rogers-Ramanujan identities. We devise a recursive method for computing the coefficients of these series when they arise within the Rogers-Ramanujan framework. Furthermore, we study the congruence properties of certain quotients and products of these series, generalizing the famous Ramanujan congru…
We prove and conjecture some new symmetric function identities, which equate the generating series of 1. Plane partitions, subject to certain restrictions and weightings, and 2. Alternating sign matrices, subject to certain symmetry properties. The left hand side of each of our identities is a simple refinement of a relevant Cauchy or Littlewood identity, allowing them to be interpreted as generating series for plane partitions. The right hand side of each identity is a partition function of the six-vertex model, on a relevant domain. These can be interpreted as generating series for alternati…
We describe a method, based on the theory of Macdonald-Koornwinder polynomials, for proving bounded Littlewood identities. Our approach provides an alternative to Macdonald's partial fraction technique and results in the first examples of bounded Littlewood identities for Macdonald polynomials. These identities, which take the form of decomposition formulas for Macdonald polynomials of type $(R,S)$ in terms of ordinary Macdonald polynomials, are $q,t$-analogues of known branching formulas for characters of the symplectic, orthogonal and special orthogonal groups. In the classical limit, our me…
Shifting by \pm 1 powers sums: p_i \to p_i \pm 1 induces a transformation on symmetric functions that we detail in the case of Hall-Littlewood polynomials. By iteration, this gives a description of these polynomials in terms of plane partitions, as well as some generating functions. We recover in particular an identity of Warnaar related to Rogers-Ramanujan identities.
It is well known that if one integrates a Schur function indexed by a partition $λ$ over the symplectic (resp. orthogonal) group, the integral vanishes unless all parts of $λ$ have even multiplicity (resp. all parts of $λ$ are even). In a recent paper of Rains and Vazirani, Macdonald polynomial generalizations of these identities and several others were developed and proved using Hecke algebra techniques. However at $q=0$ (the Hall-Littlewood level), these approaches do not work, although one can obtain the results by taking the appropriate limit. In this paper, we develop a direct approach fo…
We obtain several determinant evaluations, related to affine root systems, which provide elliptic extensions of Weyl denominator formulas. Some of these are new, also in the polynomial special case, while others yield new proofs of the Macdonald identities for the seven infinite families of irreducible reduced affine root systems.

Several new identities for elliptic hypergeometric series are proved. Remarkably, some of these are elliptic analogues of identities for basic hypergeometric series that are balanced but not very-well-poised.
The double Schur functions form a distinguished basis of the ring Λ(x||a) which is a multiparameter generalization of the ring of symmetric functions Λ(x). The canonical comultiplication on Λ(x) is extended to Λ(x||a) in a natural way so that the double power sums symmetric functions are primitive elements. We calculate the dual Littlewood-Richardson coefficients in two different ways thus providing comultiplication rules for the double Schur functions. We also prove multiparameter analogues of the Cauchy identity. A new family of Schur type functions plays the role of a dual object in the ide…
Vertex operator realizations of symplectic and orthogonal Schur functions are studied and expanded. New proofs of determinant identities of irreducible characters for the symplectic and orthogonal groups are given. We also give a new proof of the duality between the universal orthogonal and symplectic Schur functions using vertex operators.
A family of vertex operators that generalizes those given by Jing for the Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions is presented. These operators produce symmetric functions related to the Poincare polynomials referred to as generalized Kostka polynomials in the same way that Jing's operator produces symmetric functions related to Kostka-Foulkes polynomials. These operators are then used to derive commutation relations and new relations involving the generalized Kostka coefficients. Such relations may be interpreted as identities in the (GL(n) x C^*)-equivariant K-theory of the nullcone.
In this paper, we introduce the so-called elliptic Askey-Wilson polynomials which are homogeneous polynomials in two special theta functions. With regard to the significance of polynomials of such kind, we establish some general elliptic interpolation formulas by the methods of matrix inversions and of polynomial representations. Furthermore, we find that the basis of elliptic interpolation space due to Schlosser can be uniquely characterized via the elliptic Askey-Wilson polynomials. As applications of these elliptic interpolation formulas, we establish some new elliptic function identities, …
Employing bijectivisation of summation identities, we introduce local stochastic moves based on the Yang-Baxter equation for $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}_2})$. Combining these moves leads to a new object which we call the spin Hall-Littlewood Yang-Baxter field - a probability distribution on two-dimensional arrays of particle configurations on the discrete line. We identify joint distributions along down-right paths in the Yang-Baxter field with spin Hall-Littlewood processes, a generalization of Schur processes. We consider various degenerations of the Yang-Baxter field leading to new dynamic …
We provide two shifted analogues of the tableau switching process due to Benkart, Sottile, and Stroomer, the shifted tableau switching process and the modified shifted tableau switching process. They are performed by applying a sequence of specially contrived elementary transformations called {\em switches} and turn out to have some spectacular properties. For instance, the maps induced from these algorithms are involutive and behave very nicely with respect to shifted Young tableaux whose reading words satisfy the lattice property. As an application, we give combinatorial interpretations of S…
We derive combinatorial identities for variables satisfying specific systems of commutation relations, in particular elliptic commutation relations. The identities thus obtained extend corresponding ones for $q$-commuting variables $x$ and $y$ satisfying $yx=qxy$. In particular, we obtain weight-dependent binomial theorems, functional equations for generalized exponential functions, we derive results for an elliptic derivative of elliptic commuting variables, and finally study weight-dependent extensions of the Weyl algebra which we connect to rook theory.
We construct a vertex model whose partition function is a refined dual Grothendieck polynomial, where the states are interpreted as nonintersecting lattice paths. Using this, we show refined dual Grothendieck polynomials are multi-Schur functions and give a number of identities, including a Littlewood and Cauchy(-Littlewood) identity. We then refine Yeliussizov's connection between dual Grothendieck polynomials and the last passage percolation (LPP) stochastic process discussed by Johansson. By refining algebraic techniques of Johansson, we show Jacobi-Trudi formulas for skew refined dual Grot…
An elliptic $BC_n$ generalization of the classical two parameter Bailey Lemma is proved, and a basic one parameter $BC_n$ Bailey Lemma is obtained as a limiting case. Several summation and transformation formulas associated with the root system $BC_n$ are proved as applications, including a $_6ϕ_5$ summation formula, a generalized Watson transformation and an unspecialized Rogers--Selberg identity. The last identity is specialized to give an infinite family of multilateral Rogers--Selberg identities. Standard determinant evaluations are then used to compute $B_n$ and $D_n$ generalizations of t…
Given a partition $\la = (\la_1, \la_2, ... \la_k)$, let $\la^{rc} = (\la_2-1, \la_3-1, ... \la_k-1)$. It is easily seen that the diagram $\la\slash \la^{rc}$ is connected and has no $2 \times 2$ subdiagrams which we shall refer to as a ribbon. To each ribbon $R$, we associate a symmetric function operator $S^R$. We may define the major index of a ribbon $maj(R)$ to be the major index of any permutation that fits the ribbon. This paper is concerned with the operator $H_{1^k}^q = \sum_R q^{maj(R)} S^R$ where the sum is over all $2^{k-1}$ ribbons of size $k$. We show here that $H_{1^k}^q$ has tr…
Recently N.Jing discovered a certain combinatorial identity from validity of the Serre relations in some vertex representations of quantum Kac-Moody algebras. We generalize this identity, in particular, extending it from polynomials to elliptic functions, and interprete the obtained identities in terms of tensor products of evaluation representations of the quantum loop algebra $U_q(\tilde{gl_2})$ or the elliptic quantum group $E_{ρ,γ}(sl_2)$.
We use elliptic Taylor series expansions and interpolation to deduce a number of summations for elliptic hypergeometric series. We extend to the well-poised elliptic case results that in the $q$-case have previously been obtained by Cooper and by Ismail and Stanton. We also provide identities involving S. Bhargava's cubic theta functions.
This paper is about a family of symmetric rational functions that form a one-parameter generalization of the classical Hall-Littlewood polynomials. We introduce two sets of (skew and non-skew) functions that are akin to P and Q Hall-Littlewood polynomials. We establish (a) a combinatorial formula that represents our functions as partition functions for certain path ensembles in the square grid; (b) symmetrization formulas for non-skew functions; (c) identities of Cauchy and Pieri type; (d) explicit formulas for principal specializations; (e) two types of orthogonality relations for non-skew fu…
We give a direct proof of the equivalence between the Giambelli and Pieri type formulas for Hall-Littlewood functions using Young's raising operators, parallel to joint work with Buch and Kresch for the Schubert classes on isotropic Grassmannians. We prove several closely related mirror identities enjoyed by the Giambelli polynomials, which lead to new recursions for Schubert classes. The raising operator approach is applied to obtain tableau formulas for Hall-Littlewood functions, theta polynomials, and related Stanley symmetric functions. Finally, we introduce the notion of a skew element w …
Our results can be viewed as applications of algebraic combinatorics in random matrix theory. These applications are motivated by the predictive power of random matrix theory for the statistical behavior of the celebrated Riemann $ζ$-function (and $L$-functions in general), which was discovered by Montgomery (with regard to zeros of $L$-functions) and by Keating and Snaith (with regard to values of $L$-functions). The first results revolve around a new operation on partitions, which we call overlap. We prove two overlap identities for so-called Littlewood-Schur functions. The first overlap ide…
The two Rogers-Ramanujan $q$-series \[ \sum_{n=0}^{\infty}\frac{q^{n(n+σ)}}{(1-q)\cdots (1-q^n)}, \] where $σ=0,1$, play many roles in mathematics and physics. By the Rogers-Ramanujan identities, they are essentially modular functions. Their quotient, the Rogers-Ramanujan continued fraction, has the special property that its singular values are algebraic integral units. We find a framework which extends the Rogers-Ramanujan identities to doubly-infinite families of $q$-series identities. If $a\in\{1,2\}$ and $m,n\geq 1$, then we have \[ \sum_{\substack{λλ_1\leq m}} q^{a|λ|} P_{2λ}(1,q,q^2,\dot…
We prove $q$-analogues of identities that are equivalent to the functional equation of the arithmetic-geometric mean. We also present $q$-analogues of $F(\sqrt{k},\fracπ{2})$, the complete elliptical integral of the first kind, and its derivatives evaluated at $k=\frac{1}{2}$. These $q$-analogues interpolate those $n$th derivative evaluations by extending $n$ to a complex variable $s$, and we prove that they can be expressed as an infinite product.
We prove Macdonald-type deformations of a number of well-known classical branching rules by employing identities for elliptic hypergeometric integrals and series. We also propose some conjectural branching rules and allied conjectures exhibiting a novel type of vanishing behaviour involving partitions with empty 2-cores.
Previously, we proved an identity for theta functions of degree eight, and several applications of it were also discussed. This identity is a natural extension of the addition formula for the Weierstrass sigma-function. In this paper we will use this identity to reexamine our work in theta function identities in the past two decades. Hundreds of results about elliptic modular functions, both classical and new, are derived from this identity with ease. Essentially, this general theta function identity is a theta identities generating machine. Our investigation shows that many well-known results…
