A family of vertex operators that generalizes those given by Jing for the Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions is presented. These operators produce symmetric functions related to the Poincare polynomials referred to as generalized Kostka polynomials in the same way that Jing's operator produces symmetric functions related to Kostka-Foulkes polynomials. These operators are then used to derive commutation relations and new relations involving the generalized Kostka coefficients. Such relations may be interpreted as identities in the (GL(n) x C^*)-equivariant K-theory of the nullcone.
For any triple $(i,a,μ)$ consisting of a vertex $i$ in a quiver $Q$, a positive integer $a$, and a dominant $GL_a$-weight $μ$, we define a quiver current $H^{(i,a)}_μ$ acting on the tensor power $Λ^Q$ of symmetric functions over the vertices of $Q$. These provide a quiver generalization of parabolic Garsia-Jing creation operators in the theory of Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions. For a triple $(\mathbf{i},\mathbf{a},μ(\bullet))$ of sequences of such data, we define the quiver Hall-Littlewood function $H^{\mathbf{i},\mathbf{a}}_{μ(\bullet)}$ as the result of acting on $1\inΛ^Q$ by the corres…
The generalized Kostka polynomials are the Poincare polynomials of isotypic components of certain graded GL(n)-modules. The former satisfy a monotonicity property arising from natural surjections of the corresponding modules. This monotonicity property is realized combinatorially by a directed system of order- and statistic-preserving embeddings between the sets of Littlewood-Richardson (LR) tableaux that describe the generalized Kostka polynomials. Each set of LR tableaux is embedded into a cocyclage poset of column-strict tableaux of a fixed content, and the image is characterized in terms o…
Level-restricted paths play an important role in crystal theory. They correspond to certain highest weight vectors of modules of quantum affine algebras. We show that the recently established bijection between Littlewood--Richardson tableaux and rigged configurations is well-behaved with respect to level-restriction and give an explicit characterization of level-restricted rigged configurations. As a consequence a new general fermionic formula for the level-restricted generalized Kostka polynomial is obtained. Some coset branching functions of type $A$ are computed by taking limits of these fe…
An iterative formula for the Kostka-Foulkes polynomials is given using the vertex operator realization of the Hall-Littlewood polynomials. The operational formula can handle large Kostka-Foulkes polynomials, and a stability property for the Kostka-Foulkes polynomials is shown. We also use our algorithm to give a formula of $K_{λμ}(t)$ for $μ$ being hook-shaped.
Combinatorial objects called rigged configurations give rise to q-analogues of certain Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. The Kostka-Foulkes polynomials and two-column Macdonald-Kostka polynomials occur as special cases. Conjecturally these polynomials coincide with the Poincare polynomials of isotypic components of certain graded GL(n)-modules supported in a nilpotent conjugacy class closure in gl(n).
Generalized Hall-Littlewood polynomials (Macdonald spherical functions) and generalized Kostka-Foulkes polynomials ($q$-weight multiplicities) arise in many places in combinatorics, representation theory, geometry, and mathematical physics. This paper attempts to organize the different definitions of these objects and prove the fundamental combinatorial results from ``scratch'', in a presentation which, hopefully, will be accessible and useful for both the nonexpert and researchers currently working in this very active field. The combinatorics of the affine Hecke algebra plays a central role. …
Inhomogeneous lattice paths are introduced as ordered sequences of rectangular Young tableaux thereby generalizing recent work on the Kostka polynomials by Nakayashiki and Yamada and by Lascoux, Leclerc and Thibon. Motivated by these works and by Kashiwara's theory of crystal bases we define a statistic on paths yielding two novel classes of polynomials. One of these provides a generalization of the Kostka polynomials while the other, which we name the A$_{n-1}$ supernomial, is a $q$-deformation of the expansion coefficients of products of Schur polynomials. Many well-known results for Kostka …
In previous work with Mikhail Khovanov and Aaron Lauda we introduced two odd analogues of the Schur functions: one via the combinatorics of Young tableaux (odd Kostka numbers) and one via the odd symmetrization operator. In this paper we introduce a third analogue, the plactic Schur functions. We show they coincide with both previously defined types of Schur function, confirming a conjecture. Using the plactic definition, we establish an odd Littlewood-Richardson rule. We also re-cast this rule in the language of polytopes, via the Knutson-Tao hive model.
We present a family of analogs of the Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions in the $Q$-function algebra. The change of basis coefficients between this family and Schur's $Q$-functions are $q$-analogs of numbers of marked shifted tableaux. These coefficients exhibit many parallel properties to the Kostka-Foulkes polynomials.
Hall-Littlewood functions indexed by rectangular partitions, specialized at primitive roots of unity, can be expressed as plethysms. We propose a combinatorial proof of this formula using A. Schilling's bijection between ribbon tableaux and ribbon rigged configurations.
We prove an identity for Hall--Littlewood symmetric functions labelled by the Lie algebra A_2. Through specialization this yields a simple proof of the A_2 Rogers--Ramanujan identities of Andrews, Schilling and the author.
For any homomorphism V on the space of symmetric functions, we introduce an operation which creates a q-analog of V. By giving several examples we demonstrate that this quantization occurs naturally within the theory of symmetric functions. In particular, we show that the Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions are formed by taking this q-analog of the Schur symmetric functions and the Macdonald symmetric functions appear by taking the q-analog of the Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions in the parameter t. This relation is then used to derive recurrences on the Macdonald q,t-Kostka coefficients.
We introduce a new basis of the non-commutative symmetric functions whose commutative images are Schur functions. Dually, we build a basis of the quasi-symmetric functions which expand positively in the fundamental quasi-symmetric functions and decompose Schur functions. We then use the basis to construct a non-commutative lift of the Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions with similar properties to their commutative counterparts.
We obtain new combinatorial formulae for modified Hall--Littlewood polynomials, for matrix elements of the transition matrix between the elementary symmetric functions and Hall-Littlewood's ones, and for the number of rational points over the finite field of unipotent partial flag variety. The definitions and examples of generalized mahonian statistic on the set of transport matrices and dual mahonian statistic on the set of transport (0,1)-matrices are given. We also review known q-analogues of Littlewood-Richardson numbers and consider their possible generalizations. Several conjectures abou…
The Rogers-Ramanujan identities have been studied from the viewpoints of combinatorics, number theory, affine Lie algebras, statistical mechanics, and quantum field theory. This note connects the Rogers-Ramanujan identities with the finite general linear groups and the Hall-Littlewood polynomials of symmetric function theory.
Fully inhomogeneous spin Hall-Littlewood symmetric rational functions $F_λ$ are multiparameter deformations of the classical Hall-Littlewood symmetric polynomials and can be viewed as partition functions in $\mathfrak{sl}(2)$ higher spin six vertex models. We obtain a refined Littlewood identity expressing a weighted sum of $F_λ$'s over all partitions $λ$ with even multiplicities as a certain Pfaffian. This Pfaffian can be derived as a partition function of the six vertex model in a triangle with suitably decorated domain wall boundary conditions. The proof is based on the Yang-Baxter equation…
Given a partition $\la = (\la_1, \la_2, ... \la_k)$, let $\la^{rc} = (\la_2-1, \la_3-1, ... \la_k-1)$. It is easily seen that the diagram $\la\slash \la^{rc}$ is connected and has no $2 \times 2$ subdiagrams which we shall refer to as a ribbon. To each ribbon $R$, we associate a symmetric function operator $S^R$. We may define the major index of a ribbon $maj(R)$ to be the major index of any permutation that fits the ribbon. This paper is concerned with the operator $H_{1^k}^q = \sum_R q^{maj(R)} S^R$ where the sum is over all $2^{k-1}$ ribbons of size $k$. We show here that $H_{1^k}^q$ has tr…
The Weyl-Kac character formula gives a beautiful closed-form expression for the characters of integrable highest-weight modules of Kac-Moody algebras. It is not, however, a formula that is combinatorial in nature, obscuring positivity. In this paper we show that the theory of Hall-Littlewood polynomials may be employed to prove Littlewood-type combinatorial formulas for the characters of certain highest weight modules of the affine Lie algebras C_n^{(1)}, A_{2n}^{(2)} and D_{n+1}^{(2)}. Through specialisation this yields generalisations for B_n^{(1)}, C_n^{(1)}, A_{2n-1}^{(2)}, A_{2n}^{(2)} an…
We present a semi-infinite q-boson system endowed with a four-parameter boundary interaction. The n-particle Hamiltonian is diagonalized by generalized Hall-Littlewood polynomials with hyperoctahedral symmetry that arise as a degeneration of the Macdonald-Koornwinder polynomials and were recently studied in detail by Venkateswaran.
Fully inhomogeneous spin Hall-Littlewood symmetric rational functions $\mathsf{F}_λ$ arise in the context of $\mathfrak{sl}(2)$ higher spin six vertex models, and are multiparameter deformations of the classical Hall-Littlewood symmetric polynomials. We obtain a refined Cauchy identity expressing a weighted sum of the product of two $\mathsf{F}_λ$'s as a determinant. The determinant is of Izergin-Korepin type: it is the partition function of the six vertex model with suitably decorated domain wall boundary conditions. The proof of equality of two partition functions is based on the Yang-Baxter…
We introduce a new family of symmetric functions, which are $q$-analogues of products of Schur functions defined in terms of ribbon tableaux. These functions can be interpreted in terms of the Fock space representation of the quantum affine algebra of type $A_{n-1}^{(1)}$ and are related to Hall-Littlewood functions via the geometry of flag varieties. We present a series of conjectures, and prove them in special cases. The essential step in proving that these functions are actually symmetric consists in the calculation of a basis of highest weight vectors of the $q$-Fock space using ribbon tab…
The amplitudes of refined Chern-Simons (CS) theory, colored by antisymmetric (or symmetric) representations, conjecturally generate the Lambda^r- (or S^r-) colored triply graded homology of (n,m) torus knots. This paper is devoted to the generalization of Rosso-Jones formula to refined amplitudes, that involves non-trivial Gamma-factors -- expansion coefficients in the Macdonald basis. We derive from refined CS theory a linear recursion w.r.t. transformations (n,m) -> (n, n+m) and (n,m) -> (m,-n) that fully determines these factors. Applying this recursion to (n,nk+1) torus knots colored by an…
We make a broad conjecture about the $k$-Schur positivity of Catalan functions, symmetric functions which generalize the (parabolic) Hall-Littlewood polynomials. We resolve the conjecture with positive combinatorial formulas in cases which address the $k$-Schur expansion of (1) Hall-Littlewood polynomials, proving the $q=0$ case of the strengthened Macdonald positivity conjecture of Lapointe, Lascoux, and Morse; (2) the product of a Schur function and a $k$-Schur function when the indexing partitions concatenate to a partition, describing a class of Gromov-Witten invariants for the quantum coh…
We introduce a $q,t$-enumeration of Dyck paths which are forced to touch the main diagonal at specific points and forbidden to touch elsewhere and conjecture that it describes the action of the Macdonald theory $\nabla$ operator applied to a Hall-Littlewood polynomial. Our conjecture refines several earlier conjectures concerning the space of diagonal harmonics including the "shuffle conjecture" (Duke J. Math. $\mathbf {126}$ (2005), pp. 195-232) for $\nabla e_n[X]$. We bring to light that certain generalized Hall-Littlewood polynomials indexed by compositions are the building blocks for the a…
We use derived Hall algebra of the category of nilpotent representations of Jordan quiver to reconstruct the theory of symmetric functions, focusing on Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions and various operators acting on them.
In this thesis, we obtain the formula for the Kac determinant of the algebra arising from the level $N$ representation of the Ding-Iohara-Miki algebra. This formula can be proved by decomposing the level $N$ representation into the deformed $W$-algebra part and the $U(1)$ boson part, and using the screening currents of the deformed $W$-algebra. It is also discovered that singular vectors obtained by its screening currents correspond to the generalized Macdonald functions. Moreover, we investigate the $q \rightarrow 0$ limit of five-dimensional AGT correspondence. In this limit, the simplest 5D…
Based on a generalized Newton's identity, we construct a family of symmetric functions which deform the modular Hall-Littlewood functions. We also give a determinant formula for the Macdonald functions.
A generalization of Newton's identity on symmetric functions is given. Using the generalized Newton identity we give a unified method to show the existence of Hall-Littlewood, Jack and Macdonald polynomials. We also give a simple proof of the Jing-Jözefiak formula for two-row Macdonald functions.
Let W be the complex reflection group G(e,1,n). In the author's previous paper, Hall-Littlewood functions associated to W were introduced. In the special case where W is a Weyl group of type B_n, they are closely related to Green polynomials of finite classical groups. In this paper, we introduce a two variables version of the above Hall-Littlewood functions, as a generalization of Macdonald functions associated to symmetric groups. A generalization of Macdonald operators is also constructed, and we characterize such functions by making use of Macdonald operators, assuming a certain conjecture…
We study the interpolation Macdonald functions, remarkable inhomogeneous generalizations of Macdonald functions, and a sequence $A^1, A^2, \ldots$ of commuting operators that are diagonalized by them. Such a sequence of operators arises in the projective limit of finite families of commuting q-difference operators studied by Okounkov, Knop and Sahi. The main theorem is an explicit formula for the operators $A^k$. Our formula involves the family of Hall-Littlewood functions and a new family of inhomogeneous Hall-Littlewood functions, for which we give an explicit construction and identify as a …
Bijectivization refines the Yang-Baxter equation into a pair of local Markov moves which randomly update the configuration of the vertex model. Employing this approach, we introduce new Yang-Baxter random fields of Young diagrams based on spin $q$-Whittaker and spin Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions. We match certain scalar Markovian marginals of these fields with (1) the stochastic six vertex model; (2) the stochastic higher spin six vertex model; and (3) a new vertex model with pushing which generalizes the $q$-Hahn PushTASEP introduced recently by Corwin-Matveev-Petrov (arXiv:1811.06475).…
We introduce an affinization of the quantum Kac-Moody algebra associated to a symmetric generalized Cartan matrix. Based on the affinization, we construct a representation of the quantum Kac-Moody algebra by vertex operators from bosonic fields. We also obtain a combinatorial indentity about Hall-Littlewood polynomials.
The Macdonald symmetric functions are used to define measures on the set of all partitions of all integers. Probabilistic algorithms are given for growing partitions according to these measures. The case of Hall-Littlewood polynomials is related to the finite classical groups, and the corresponding algorithms simplify. The case of Schur functions leads to a $q$-analog of Plancharel measure, and a conditioned version of the corresponding algorithms yields generalizations of the hook walk of combinatorics.
We study aspects of the vertex operator algebra (VOA) corresponding to Argyres-Douglas (AD) theories engineered using the 6d N=(2, 0) theory of type $J$ on a punctured sphere. We denote the AD theories as $(J^b[k],Y)$, where $J^b[k]$ and $Y$ represent an irregular and a regular singularity respectively. We restrict to the `minimal' case where $J^b[k]$ has no associated mass parameters, and the theory does not admit any exactly marginal deformations. The VOA corresponding to the AD theory is conjectured to be the W-algebra $\mathcal{W}^{k_{2d}}(J,Y)$, where $k_{2d}=-h+ \frac{b}{b+k}$ with $h$ b…
