The Macdonald symmetric functions are used to define measures on the set of all partitions of all integers. Probabilistic algorithms are given for growing partitions according to these measures. The case of Hall-Littlewood polynomials is related to the finite classical groups, and the corresponding algorithms simplify. The case of Schur functions leads to a $q$-analog of Plancharel measure, and a conditioned version of the corresponding algorithms yields generalizations of the hook walk of combinatorics.
The two-parameter Macdonald polynomials are a central object of algebraic combinatorics and representation theory. We give a Markov chain on partitions of k with eigenfunctions the coefficients of the Macdonald polynomials when expanded in the power sum polynomials. The Markov chain has stationary distribution a new two-parameter family of measures on partitions, the inverse of the Macdonald weight (rescaled). The uniform distribution on permutations and the Ewens sampling formula are special cases. The Markov chain is a version of the auxiliary variables algorithm of statistical physics. Prop…
We present a probabilistic generalization of the Robinson--Schensted correspondence in which a permutation maps to several different pairs of standard Young tableaux with nonzero probability. The probabilities depend on two parameters $q$ and $t$, and the correspondence gives a new proof of the squarefree part of the Cauchy identity for Macdonald polynomials. By specializing $q$ and $t$ in various ways, one recovers both the row and column insertion versions of the Robinson--Schensted correspondence, as well as several $q$- and $t$-deformations of row and column insertion which have been intro…
We present a probabilistic generalization of the Robinson--Schensted correspondence in which a permutation maps to several different pairs of standard Young tableaux with nonzero probability. The probabilities depend on two parameters $q$ and $t$, and the correspondence gives a new proof of the squarefree part of the Cauchy identity for Macdonald polynomials (i.e., the equality of the coefficients of $x_1 \cdots x_n y_1 \cdots y_n$ on either side, which are related to permutations and standard Young tableaux). By specializing $q$ and $t$ in various ways, one recovers the row and column inserti…
Macdonald processes are measures on sequences of integer partitions built using the Cauchy summation identity for Macdonald symmetric functions. These measures are a useful tool to uncover the integrability of many probabilistic systems, including the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation and a number of other models in its universality class. In this paper we develop the structural theory behind half-space variants of these models and the corresponding half-space Macdonald processes. These processes are built using a Littlewood summation identity instead of the Cauchy identity, and their analysi…
We introduce a randomized Hall-Littlewood RSK algorithm and study its combinatorial and probabilistic properties. On the probabilistic side, a new model --- the Hall-Littlewood RSK field --- is introduced. Its various degenerations contain known objects (the stochastic six vertex model, the asymmetric simple exclusion process) as well as a variety of new ones. We provide formulas for a rich class of observables of these models, extending existing results about Macdonald processes. On the combinatorial side, we establish analogs of properties of the classical RSK algorithm: invertibility, symme…
The eigenvalue spacing of a uniformly chosen random finite unipotent matrix in its permutation action on lines is studied. We obtain bounds for the mean number of eigenvalues lying in a fixed arc of the unit circle and offer an approach toward other asymptotics. For the case of all unipotent matrices, the proof gives a probabilistic interpretation to identities of Macdonald from symmetric function theory. For the case of upper triangular matrices over a finite field, connections between symmetric function theory and a probabilistic growth algorithm of Borodin emerge..
We consider potential theory on Bratteli diagrams arising from Macdonald polynomials. The case of Hall-Littlewood polynomials is particularly interesting; the elements of the diagram are partitions, the branching multiplicities are integers, the combinatorial dimensions are Green's polynomials, and the Jordan form of a randomly chosen unipotent upper triangular matrix over a finite field gives rise to a harmonic function. The case of Schur functions yields natural deformations of the Young lattice and Plancharel measure. Many harmonic functions are constructed and algorithms for sampling from …
We attempt to explain the ubiquity of tableaux and of Pieri and Cauchy formulae for combinatorially defined families of symmetric functions. We show that such formulae are to be expected from symmetric functions arising from representations of Heisenberg algebras. The resulting framework that we describe is a generalization of the classical Boson-Fermion correspondence, from which Schur functions arise. Our work can be used to understand Hall-Littlewood polynomials, Macdonald polynomials and Lascoux, Leclerc and Thibon's ribbon functions, together with other new families of symmetric functions…
A probabilistic approach is provided to establish new hypergeometric identities. It is based on the calculation of moments of the limiting distribution of the position of the elephant random walk in the superdiffusive regime.
We explore some probabilistic applications arising in connections with $K$-theoretic symmetric functions. For instance, we determine certain corner distributions of random lozenge tilings and plane partitions. We also introduce some distributions that are naturally related to the corner growth model. Our main tools are dual symmetric Grothendieck polynomials and normalized Schur functions.
The asymptotic spectrum of graphs, introduced by Zuiddam (arXiv:1807.00169, 2018), is the space of graph parameters that are additive under disjoint union, multiplicative under the strong product, normalized and monotone under homomorphisms between the complements. He used it to obtain a dual characterization of the Shannon capacity of graphs as the minimum of the evaluation function over the asymptotic spectrum and noted that several known upper bounds, including the Lovász number and the fractional Haemers bounds are in fact elements of the asymptotic spectrum (spectral points). We show that…
We prove the existence of Rado sets in the Banach space of continuous functions on [0,1]. A countable dense set S is Rado if with probability 1, the infinite geometric random graph on S, formed by probabilistically making adjacent elements of S that are within unit distance of each other, is unique up to isomorphism. We show that for a suitable measure which we construct, almost all countable dense sets in the subspaces of piecewise linear functions and of polynomials are Rado. Moreover, all graphs arising from such sets are of a unique isomorphism type. For the subspace of Brownian motion pat…
We introduce a class of random graphs that we argue meets many of the desiderata one would demand of a model to serve as the foundation for a statistical analysis of real-world networks. The class of random graphs is defined by a probabilistic symmetry: invariance of the distribution of each graph to an arbitrary relabelings of its vertices. In particular, following Caron and Fox, we interpret a symmetric simple point process on $\mathbb{R}_+^2$ as the edge set of a random graph, and formalize the probabilistic symmetry as joint exchangeability of the point process. We give a representation th…
