In the paper, we study the GIT construction of the moduli space of Chow semistable curves of genus 4 in P^3. By using the GIT method developed by Mumford and a deformation theoretic argument, we give a modular description of this moduli space. We classify Chow stable or Chow semistable curves when they are irreducible or nonreduced. Then we work out the case when a curve has two components. Our classification provides some clues to understand the birational map from the moduli space of stable curves of genus 4 to the moduli space of Chow semistable curves of genus 4 in P^3.
We find a new presentation of the stack of hyperelliptic curves of odd genus as a quotient stack and we use it to compute its integral Chow ring by means of equivariant intersection theory.
We compute the integral Chow ring of the stack of smooth, non-hyperelliptic curves of genus three. We obtain this result by computing the integral Chow ring of the stack of smooth plane quartics, by means of equivariant intersection theory.
We determine the Chow ring (with Q-coefficients) of M_6 by showing that all Chow classes are tautological. In particular, all algebraic cohomology is tautological, and the natural map from Chow to cohomology is injective. To demonstrate the utility of these methods, we also give quick derivations of the Chow groups of moduli spaces of curves of lower genus. The genus 6 case relies on the particularly beautiful Brill-Noether theory in this case, and in particular on a rank 5 vector bundle "relativizing" a baby case of a celebrated construction of Mukai, which we interpret as a subbundle of the …
After recalling several constructions of the moduli space of curves of genus zero by different people we give our alternative construction of the moduli space. This gives a simple description of the intersection ring of this space. We give a basis for the Chow groups and an explicit duality between the Chow groups in complementary degrees. There is a recursive description of this algebra by S. Keel. Our presentation is simpler in the sense that there are fewer generators and fewer relations and our description is explicit.
We show that prime Fano threefolds $Y$ of genus 8 have a multiplicative Chow-Künneth decomposition, in the sense of Shen-Vial. As a consequence, a certain tautological subring of the Chow ring of powers of $Y$ injects into cohomology.
The Chow group of zero cycles in the moduli space of stable pointed curves of genus zero is isomorphic to the integer additive group. Let $M$ be monomial in this Chow group. If no two factors of $M$ fulfill a particular quadratic relation, then the monomial can be represented equivalently by a specific tree; otherwise, $M$ is mapped to zero under the stated isomorphism. Starting from this tree representation, we introduce a graphical algorithm for computing the corresponding integer for $M$ under the aforementioned isomorphism. The algorithm is linear with respect to the size of the tree.
In this paper we explicit the rational Chow ring of the stack consisting of nodal curves of genus 0 with at most 3 nodes: it is a Q-algebra with 10 generators and 11 relations.
The goal of this paper is to compute the rational Chow ring of the stack consisting of nodal curves of genus 0 with at most 3 nodes: it is a Q-algebra with 10 generators and 11 relations.
The moduli space $\bar{M}_A$ of weighted pointed stable curves of genus zero is stratified according to the degeneration types of such curves. We show that the homology groups of the moduli space $\bar{M}_A$ are generated by the strata of $\bar{M}_A$ and give all additive relations between them. We also observe that the Chow groups $A_i \bar{M}_A$ and the homology groups $H_{2i} \bar{M}_A$ are isomorphic. This generalizes Kontsevich-Manin's and Losev-Manin's theorems to arbitrary weight data $A$.
The Chow ring of the moduli space of marked rational curves is generated by Keel's divisor classes. The top graded part of this Chow ring is isomorphic to the integers, generated by the class of a single point. In this paper, we give an algorithm for computing the intersection degree of tuples of Keel's divisor classes. This computation is a concrete but complicated algorithmic question in the field. Also, we give a simple complexity argument for the algorithm. Additionally, we introduce three identities on multinomial coefficients, as well as proofs for them.
In this paper we give a complete description of the integral Chow ring of the stack $\mathscr{H}_{g,1}$ of 1-pointed hyperelliptic curves, lifting relations and generators from the Chow ring of $\mathscr{H}_g$. We also give a geometric interpretation for the generators.
In this work, we introduce the moduli stack $\widetilde{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}^r$ of $n$-pointed, $A_r$-stable curves of genus $g$ and use it to compute the Chow ring of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_3$. As a byproduct, we also compute the Chow ring of $\widetilde{\mathcal{M}}_3^7$. All the Chow rings are assumed to be with coefficients in $\mathbb{Z}[1/6]$.
The Chow ring of $\mathcal{M}_g$ is known to be generated by tautological classes for $g \leq 9$. Meanwhile, the first example of a non-tautological class on $\mathcal{M}_{g}$ is the fundamental class of the bielliptic locus in $\mathcal{M}_{12}$, due to van Zelm. It remains open if the Chow rings of $\mathcal{M}_{10}$ and $\mathcal{M}_{11}$ are generated by tautological classes. In these cases, a natural first place to look is at the bielliptic locus. In genus $10$, it is already known that classes supported on the bielliptic locus are tautological. Here, we prove that all classes supported o…

We study the Chow group of 1-cycles of the moduli space of semistable parabolic vector bundles of fixed rank, determinant and a generic weight over a nonsingular projective curve over $\mathbb{C}$ of genus at least 3. We show that, the Chow group of 1-cycles remains isomorphic as we vary the generic weight. As a consequence, we can give an explicit description of the Chow group in the case of rank 2 and determinant $\mathcal{O}(x)$, where $x\in X$ is a fixed point.
We give a presentation for the stack of rational curves with at most 1 node as the quotient by GL(3) of an open set in a 6-dimensional irreducible representation. We then use equivariant intersection theory to calculate the integral Chow ring of this stack.
Title: Indecomposable Higher Chow Cycles on Low Dimensional Jacobians Authors: Alberto Collino Comments: AMS-TeX, 10 pages Subj-class: Algebraic Geometry MSC-class: 14C30 ;19E15 There is a basic indecomposable higher cycle K in Bloch's higher Chow group CH^{g}(J(C),1) on the Jacobian J(C) of a general hyperelliptic curve C of genus g. Consider K(t) the translation of K associated with a point t in C, we prove that in general K - K(t) is indecomposable if the genus is at least 3. Our tool is Lewis' condition for indecomposability. We show next that on the jacobian J(C) of a general curve C of g…
We determine the rational Chow ring of the moduli space $\mathcal{H}_{g,n}$ of $n$-pointed smooth hyperelliptic curves of genus $g$ when $n \leq 2g+6$. We also show that the Chow ring of the partial compactification $\mathcal{I}_{g,n}$, parametrizing $n$-pointed irreducible nodal hyperelliptic curves, is generated by tautological divisors. Along the way, we improve Casnati's result that $\mathcal{H}_{g,n}$ is rational for $n \leq 2g+8$ to show $\mathcal{H}_{g,n}$ is rational for $n \leq 3g+5$.
We give explicit equations for the Chow and Hilbert quotients of a projective scheme X by the action of an algebraic torus T in an auxiliary toric variety. As a consequence we provide GIT descriptions of these canonical quotients, and obtain other GIT quotients of X by variation of GIT quotient. We apply these results to find equations for the moduli space \bar{M}_{0,n} of stable genus zero n-pointed curves as a subvariety of a smooth toric variety defined via tropical methods.
In this paper, we show the existence of a Chow--Kuenneth decomposition for the moduli stack of stable curves of genus g with r marked points, for low values of g,r. We also look at the moduli space R of double covers of genus 3 curves, branched along 4 distinct points. We obtain a birational model of the moduli space R as a group quotient of a product of two Grassmanian varieties. This provides a Chow-Kuenneth decomposition over an open subset of R. The question of rationality of R is also discussed.
In the last decades there have been introduced different concepts of stability for projective varieties. In this paper we give a natural and intrinsic criterion of the Chow, and Hilbert, stability for complex irreducible smooth projective curves $C\subset \mathbb P ^n$. Namely, if the restriction $T\mathbb P_{|C} ^n$ of the tangent bundle of $\mathbb P ^n$ to $C$ is stable then $C\subset \mathbb P ^n$ is Chow stable, and hence Hilbert stable. We apply this criterion to describe a smooth open set of the irreducible component $Hilb^{P(t),s}_{Ch}$ of the Hilbert scheme of $\mathbb{P} ^n$ containi…
Motivated by the computation of the BPS-invariants on a local Calabi-Yau threefold suggested by S. Katz, we compute the Chow ring and the cohomology ring of the moduli space of stable sheaves of Hilbert polynomial $4m+1$ on the projective plane. As a byproduct, we obtain the total Chern class and Euler characteristics of all line bundles, which provide a numerical data for the strange duality on the plane.
In this note, we revisit the modified diagonal cycle of Gross and Schoen. We look at degenerations of this cycle, induced by a degeneration of the curve C, and explain how the specialization map with respect to the central fiber produces a higher Chow cycle. When C is non-hyperelliptic of genus three, and degenerates to a nodal curve, the degeneration of the cycle corresponds to an indecomposable higher Chow cycle on a curve of genus two.
The purpose of this dissertation is to study the intersection theory of the moduli spaces of stable maps of degree two from two-pointed, genus zero nodal curves to arbitrary-dimensional projective space. Toward this end, first the Betti numbers of \bar{M}_{0,2}(P^r,2) are computed using Serre polynomials and equivariant Serre polynomials. Then, specializing to the space \bar{M}_{0,2}(P^1,2), generators and relations for the Chow ring are given. Chow rings of simpler spaces are also described, and the method of localization and linear algebra is developed. Both tools are used in finding the rel…
We continue the study of the Chow ring of the moduli stack $\mathfrak{M}_{g,n}$ of prestable curves begun in [arXiv:2012.09887v2]. In genus $0$, we show that the Chow ring of $\mathfrak{M}_{0,n}$ coincides with the tautological ring and give a complete description in terms of (additive) generators and relations. This generalizes earlier results by Keel and Kontsevich-Manin for the spaces of stable curves. Our argument uses the boundary stratification of the moduli stack together with the study of the first higher Chow groups of the strata, in particular providing a new proof of the results of …
In this paper we introduce the stack of polarized twisted conics and we use it to give a new point of view on $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_2$. In particular, we present a new and independent approach to the computation of the integral Chow ring of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_2$, previously determined by Eric Larson.
The aim of this note is to announce some results on the GIT problem for the Hilbert and Chow scheme of curves of degree d and genus g in P^{d-g}, whose full details will appear in a subsequent paper. In particular, we extend the previous results of L. Caporaso up to d>4(2g-2) and we observe that this is sharp. In the range 2(2g-2)<d<7/2(2g-2), we get a complete new description of the GIT quotient. As a corollary, we get a new compactification of the universal Jacobian over the moduli space of pseudo-stable curves.
While there is much work and many conjectures surrounding the intersection theory of the moduli space of curves, relatively little is known about the intersection theory of the Hurwitz space $\mathcal{H}_{k, g}$ parametrizing smooth degree $k$, genus $g$ covers of $\mathbb{P}^1$. Let $k = 3, 4, 5$. We prove that the rational Chow rings of $\mathcal{H}_{k,g}$ stabilize in a suitable sense as $g$ tends to infinity. In the case $k = 3$, we completely determine the Chow rings for all $g$. We also prove that the rational Chow groups of the simply branched Hurwitz space $\mathcal{H}^s_{k,g} \subset …
We construct some natural cycles with trivial regulator in the higher Chow groups of Jacobians. For hyperelliptic curves we use a criterion due to J. Lewis to prove that the cycles we construct are indecomposable, and then use a specialization argument to prove indecomposability for more general curves. Please note that math.AG/9909062 has become an obsolete version of some of the results in the present paper.
We compute the Picard group of the moduli stack of smooth curves of genus $g$ for $3\leq g\leq 5$, using methods of equivariant intersection theory. We base our proof on the computation of some relations in the integral Chow ring of certain moduli stacks of smooth complete intersections. As a byproduct, we compute the cycle classes of some divisors on $\mathcal{M}_g$.
We bound from below the complexity of the top Chern class of the Hodge bundle in the Chow ring of the moduli space of curves: no formulas in terms of classes of degrees 1 and 2 can exist. As a consequence of the Torelli map, the 0-section over the second Voronoi compactification of the moduli of principally polarized abelian varieties also can not be expressed in terms of classes of degree 1 and 2. Along the way, we establish new cases of Pixton's conjecture for tautological relations. In the log Chow ring of the moduli space of curves, however, we prove that the top Chern class of the Hodge b…
In this paper we investigate Murre's conjecture on the Chow--Künneth decomposition for two classes of examples. We look at the universal families of smooth curves over spaces which dominate the moduli space $\cM_g$, in genus at most 8 and show existence of a Chow--Künneth decomposition. The second class of examples include the representation varieties of a finitely generated group with one relation. This is done in the setting of equivariant cohomology and equivariant Chow groups to get equivariant Chow--Künneth decompositions.
We consider surfaces of geometric genus $3$ with the property that their transcendental cohomology splits into $3$ pieces, each piece coming from a $K3$ surface. For certain families of surfaces with this property, we can show there is a similar splitting on the level of Chow groups (and Chow motives).
We study the Chow ring of the moduli stack $\mathfrak{M}_{g,n}$ of prestable curves and define the notion of tautological classes on this stack. We extend formulas for intersection products and functoriality of tautological classes under natural morphisms from the case of the tautological ring of the moduli space $\bar{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}$ of stable curves. This paper provides foundations for the second part of the paper. In the appendix (joint with J. Skowera), we develop the theory of a proper, but not necessary projective, pushforward of algebraic cycles. The proper pushforward is necessary …
We give a presentation for the Chow ring of the moduli space of degree two stable maps from two-pointed rational curves to P^1. Also, integrals of of all degree four monomials in the hyperplane pullbacks and boundary divisors of this ring are computed using equivariant intersection theory. Finally, the presentation is used to give a new computation of the (previously known) values of the genus zero, degree two, two-pointed gravitational correlators of P^1. This article is a sequel to math.AG/0501322, although the only information truly needed from that article is the Poincare polynomial of the…
We give a presentation for the (integral) torus-equivariant Chow ring of the quot scheme, a smooth compactification of the space of rational curves of degree d in the Grassmannian. For this presentation, we refine Evain's extension of the method of Goresky, Kottwitz, and MacPherson to express the torus-equivariant Chow ring in terms of the torus-fixed points and explicit relations coming from the geometry of families of torus-invariant curves. As part of this calculation, we give a complete description of the torus-invariant curves on the quot scheme and show that each family is a product of p…
We study genus 2 Hilbert-Siegel varieties, i.e. Shimura varieties $S_K$ corresponding to the group $\mbox{GSp}_{4,F}$ over a totally real field $F$, along with the relative Chow motives $^λ\mathcal{V}$ of abelian type over $S_K$ obtained from irreducible representations $V_λ$ of $\mbox{GSp}_{4,F}$. We analyse the weight filtration on the degeneration of such motives at the boundary of the Baily-Borel compactification and we find a criterion on the highest weight $λ$ which characterises the absence of the middle weights 0 and 1 in the corresponding degeneration. Thanks to Wildeshaus' theory, th…
We give an explicit description of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{1,2}$ as a weighted blow-up of a weighted projective stack. We use this description to compute the Brauer group of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{1,2;S}$ over any base scheme $S$ where 6 is invertible, and the integral Chow rings of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{1,2}$ and $\mathcal{M}_{1,2}$.
We investigate GIT quotients of polarized curves. More specifically, we study the GIT problem for the Hilbert and Chow schemes of curves of degree d and genus g in a projective space of dimension d-g, as the ratio v:=d/(2g-2) decreases. We prove that the first three values of v at which the GIT quotients change are given by v=4, 3.5, 2. We show that, for v>4, L. Caporaso's results hold true for both Hilbert and Chow semistability. If 3.5<v<4, the Hilbert semistable locus coincides with the Chow semistable locus and it maps to the moduli stack of weakly-pseudo-stable curves. If 2<v<3.5, the Hil…
