In a central nucleus-nucleus collision at high-energies, medium partons kicked by a near-side jet acquire a momentum along the jet direction and subsequently materialize as the observed ridge particles. They carry direct information on the early parton momentum distribution which can be extracted by using the ridge data for central AuAu collisions at \sqrt{s_{NN}}=200 GeV. The extracted parton momentum distribution has a thermal-like transverse momentum distribution but a non-Gaussian, relatively flat rapidity distribution at mid-rapidity with sharp kinematic boundaries at large rapidities that depend on the transverse momentum.
We analyze PHENIX near-side ridge data for central Au+Au collisions at \sqrt{s_{NN}}=200 GeV with the momentum kick model, in which a near-side jet emerges near the surface, kicks medium partons, loses energy, and fragments into the trigger particle and fragmentation products. The kicked medium partons subsequently materialize as the observed ridge particles, which carry direct information on the early parton momentum distribution and the magnitude of the momentum kick. We find that the PHENIX ridge data can be described well by the momentum kick model and the extracted early partons momentum …
In the momentum kick model, a near-side jet emerges near the surface, kicks medium partons, loses energy, and fragments into the trigger particle and fragmentation products. The kicked medium partons subsequently materialize as the observed ridge particles, which carry direct information on the magnitude of the momentum kick and the initial parton momentum distribution at the moment of jet-(medium parton) collisions. The initial parton momentum distribution extracted from the STAR ridge data for central AuAu collisions at \sqrt{s_{NN}}=200 GeV has a thermal-like transverse momentum distributio…
In the (Delta phi)-(Delta eta) correlation associated with a near-side jet observed by the STAR Collaboration in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC [Ref. 1-6], the ridge structure can be explained by the momentum kick model in which the ridge particles are identified as medium partons which suffer a collision with the jet and acquire a momentum kick along the jet direction. If this is indeed the correct mechanism, the ridge structure associated with the near-side jet may be used to probe the parton momentum distribution at the moment of the jet-parton collision, leading to the result that at that in…
We extract the early parton momentum distribution using the STAR Collaboration data of ridge particles associated with a near-side jet in central AuAu collisions at \sqrt{s_{NN}}=200 GeV. The ridge particles are identified as medium partons kicked by the jet near the surface and they carry direct information on the parton momentum distribution at the moment of jet-parton collisions. The extracted parton momentum distribution has a thermal-like transverse momentum distribution but a rapidity plateau structure with a relatively flat rapidity distribution at mid-rapidities with sharp kinematic bo…
I propose a simple explanation of the ``ridge'' seen in the near-side jet two-particle correlation function in heavy ion collisions at RHIC. This could be a cumulative shock wave produced in liquid-like matter by an energetic stopped parton. Splash of liquid in the direction opposite to the fast penetrating object is a known effect. In nucleus-nucleus collision the trigger is an escaped non-interacting parton. Partner parton could be stopped in the medium forming a conical-like shock wave with density depletion behind the stopped parton. In the proposed scenario shock waves will move in three …
The ridge particles associated with a near-side jet are identified as medium partons kicked by the jet near the surface. They carry direct information on the parton momentum distribution at the moment of jet-parton collisions and the magnitude of the longitudinal momentum kick. The extracted early parton momentum distribution has a rapidity plateau structure with a thermal-like transverse momentum distribution. Such a rapidity plateau structure may arise from particle production in flux tubes, as color charges and anti-color charges separate at high energies.
The near-side ridge structure in the (Delta phi)-(Delta eta) correlation observed by the CMS Collaboration for pp collisions at 7 TeV at LHC can be explained by the momentum kick model in which the ridge particles are medium partons that suffer a collision with the jet and acquire a momentum kick along the jet direction. Similar to the early medium parton momentum distribution obtained in previous analysis for nucleus-nucleus collisions at 0.2 TeV, the early medium parton momentum distribution in pp collisions at 7 TeV exhibits a rapidity plateau as arising from particle production in a flux t…
The similarities between string percolation and Glasma results are emphasized, special attention being paid to rapidity long range correlations, ridge structure and elliptic flow. As the string density of high multiplicity pp collisions at LHC energies has similar value as the corresponding to Au-Au semi-central collisions at RHIC we also expect in pp collisions long rapidity correlations and ridge structure, extended more than 8 units in rapidity.
I briefly review the physics of skewed parton distributions. Special emphasis is put on the relevance of target polarization, and on the different roles of small and of intermediate x_B.
An interpretation of the ridge phenomenon found in pp collisions at 7 TeV is given in terms of enhancement of soft partons due to energy loss of semihard jets. A description of ridge formation in nuclear collisions can directly be extended to pp collisions, since hydrodynamics is not used, and azimuthal anisotropy is generated by semihard scattering. Both the p_T and multiplicity dependencies are well reproduced. Some suggestions are made about other observables.
We explore skewed parton distributions for simple, model wave-functions in a truncated two-body Fock space. Consideration of non-Gaussian wave functions is our main emphasis, from which we observe the distributions are bimodal (there can be two distinct peaks) in the Fock-space diagonal overlap region (x > xi). We demonstrate that this behavior arises from convoluting two light-front wave functions to form the skewed parton distribution. Furthermore, the factorization Ansaetze, which have been used often, are shown not to hold. At high t, we can write the skewed parton distribution in terms of…
Within the AMPT Monte Carlo model, hot spots in the initial transverse parton density are shown to lead to harmonic flows which all contribute to dihadron azimuthal correlation. The net back-to-back dihadron correlation after subtraction of harmonic flows still has a double-peak that is independent of the initial geometric triangularity at a fixed impact-parameter and unique to the structure of jet-induced Mach cone and expanding hot spots dragged by radial flow. The longitudinal structure of hot spots also leads to a near-side ridge in dihadron correlation with a large rapidity gap. By succes…
In this study, the momentum-kick model is used to understand the ridge behaviours in dihadron $Δη$--$Δφ$ correlations recently reported by the LHC in high-multiplicity proton-proton (pp) collisions. The kick stand model is based on a momentum kick by leading jets to partons in the medium close to the leading jets. The medium where partons move freely is assumed in the model regardless of collision systems. This helps us apply the method to small systems like pp collisions in a simple way. Also, the momentum transfer is purely kinematic and this provides us a strong way to approach the ridge be…
We show that the long-range rapidity correlations between the produced charged-hadron pairs from two BFKL parton showers generate considerable azimuthal angle correlations. These correlations have no 1/N_c suppression. The effect of gluon saturation on these correlations are discussed and we show that it is important. We show that a pronounced ridge-like structure emerges by going from the BFKL to the saturation region. We show that the ridge structure at high-energy proton-proton and nucleus-nucleus collisions has the same origin and its main feature can be understood due to initial-state eff…
We explore skewed parton distributions for two-body, light-front wave functions. In order to access all kinematical regimes, we adopt a covariant Bethe-Salpeter approach, which makes use of the underlying equation of motion (here the Weinberg equation) and its Green's function. Such an approach allows for the consistent treatment of the non-wave function vertex (but rules out the case of phenomenological wave functions derived from ad hoc potentials). Our investigation centers around checking internal consistency by demonstrating time-reversal invariance and continuity between valence and non-…
We discuss results for n-gluon correlations that form the basis of the Glasma flux tube picture of early times in heavy ion collisions. Our formalism is valid to all orders in perturbation theory at leading logarithmic accuracy in x and includes both QCD bremsstrahlung and the many body screening and recombination effects that are important at large parton densities. Long range rapidity correlations, as seen in the near-side ridge in heavy ion collisions, are a chronometer of these early time strong color field dynamics. They also contain information on how radial flow develops in heavy ion co…
The nonperturbative parton distributions, obtained from the Lorentz contracted wave functions, are analyzed in the formalism of many-particle Fock components and their properties are compared to the standard perturbative distributions. We show that the collinear and IR divergencies specific for perturbative evolution treatment are absent in the nonperturbative version, however for large momenta< $ \vep^2_i \gg σ$ (string tension), the bremsstrahlung kinematics is restored. A preliminary discussion of possible nonperturbative effects in DIS and high energy scattering is given, including in part…
A modification of the collinear evolution equations as an appropriate approach to improve the behavior of parton distribution functions in the region of small longitudinal momentum fractions, and to find more theoretical arguments to clarify the possible appearence of saturation regime is suggested. It is argued that parton diffusion in the rapidity space at large parton densities along the space-time evolution could result in the emergence of a natural saturation scale on which freezing actually occurs.
In the present paper we discuss how to maximize the double-parton scattering (DPS) contribution in four-jet production by selecting kinematical cuts. Here both single-parton and double-parton scattering effects are calculated in the $k_T$-factorization approach, following our recent developments of relevant methods and tools. Several differential distributions are shown and discussed in the context of future searches for DPS effects, such as rapidity of jets, rapidity distance, and azimuthal correlations between jets. The dependences of the relative DPS amount is studied as function of those o…
The observation of long range ridge-like structure in the near-side region of the two particle $Δη-Δϕ$ correlations as measured by LHC experiments in high multiplicity p$-$p collisions indicated towards the presence of collective effects which are similar to that observed in p$-$A(nucleon-nucleus) and A$-$A (nucleus-nucleus) collisions. The two particle correlation between the charged particles in $Δη-Δϕ$ for p$-$p collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV and 13 TeV is studied using Pythia 8 event generator within the framework of final-state partonic color reconnection effects as well as the microsco…
In this paper, we consider the possibility that a new stage of matter, stemming from hidden/dark sectors beyond the Standard Model, to be formed in $pp$ collisions at the LHC, can significantly modify the correlations among final-state particles. In particular, two-particle azimuthal correlations are studied by means of a Fourier series sensitive to the near-side ridge effect while assuming that hidden/dark particles decay on top of the conventional parton shower. Then, new (fractional) harmonic terms should be included in the Fourier analysis of the azimuthal anisotropies, encoding the hypoth…
We review the models suggested, to date, as an explanation for the so called "ridge" phenomenon, an elongation in rapidity of 2-particle correlations seen at RHIC and LHC energies. We argue that these models can be divided into two phenomenologically distinct classes: "Hotspot+flow" driven correlations, where initial state correlations created by structures local in configuration space are collimated by transverse flow, and models where the azimuthal correlation is created through local partonic interactions in a high gluon density initial state. We further argue that the key to distinguish th…
In this article we investigate how the drag coefficient $A$ and $\hat{q}$, the transverse momentum transfer by unit length, of charm quarks are modified if the QGP is not in complete thermal equilibrium using the dynamical quasi-particle model (DQPM) which reproduces both, the equation-of-state of the QGP and the spatial diffusion coefficient of heavy quarks as predicted by lattice QCD calculations. We study three cases: a) the QGP has an anisotropic momentum distribution of the partons which leads to an anisotropic pressure b) the QGP partons have higher or lower kinetic energies as compared …
We obtain prompt di-photon cross-section in proton-nucleus collisions in Hamiltonian light-cone approach within a hybrid approximation, treating the projectile proton in the parton model and the target nucleus in the Color-Glass-Condensate approach. We study in details the di-photon correlations in quark-nucleus and proton-nucleus collisions at RHIC and the LHC. We show that the single fragmentation di-photon produces the away side correlations peak, and the double fragmentation component of prompt di-photon is responsible for the near-side peak, and the long-range in rapidity near-side azimut…
We present an estimation of the contribution of double parton scattering (DPS) for jets widely separated in rapidity and for four-jet sample. In the case of four-jet production we calculate cross section for both single-parton scattering (SPS) using the code ALPGEN as well as for DPS in LO collinear approach. The DPS contribution is calculated within the so-called factorized Ansatz and each step of DPS is calculated in the LO collinear approximation. We show that the relative (with respect to SPS dijets and to the BFKL Mueller-Navelet (MN) jets) contribution of DPS is growing at large rapidity…
We discuss four-jet production at the LHC. We calculate cross section for both single-parton scattering (SPS) using the ALPGEN code as well as for double-parton scattering (DPS) in leading-order collinear approach. Our results are compared with experimental data obtained recently by the CMS collaboration. We show that the ALPGEN code relatively well describes distributions in transverse momenta and rapidity of each of the four jets ordered by their transverse momenta (leading, subleading etc.). The SPS mechanism does not explain the distributions at large rapidity for the leading jet. The DPS …
Quasi parton distributions (quasi-PDFs) are currently under intense investigation. Quasi-PDFs are defined through spatial correlation functions and are thus accessible in lattice QCD. They gradually approach their corresponding standard (light-cone) PDFs as the hadron momentum increases. Recently, we investigated the concept of quasi-distributions in the case of generalized parton distributions (GPDs) by calculating the twist-2 vector GPDs in the scalar diquark spectator model. In the present work, we extend this study to the remaining six leading-twist GPDs. For large hadron momenta, all quas…
The generalized parton distributions of the pion are studied within different light-front approaches for the quark-hadron and quark-photon vertices, exploring different kinematical regions in both the valence and non-valence sector. Moments of the generalized parton distributions which enter the definition of generalized form factors are also compared with recent lattice calculations.
We study momentum distributions of the final-state charged lepton in ppbar/pp --> ttbar --> l^+ X (l=e or mu) at hadron colliders, i.e., Tevatron and Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in order to explore possible new-physics effects in the top-quark sector. Assuming general model-independent ttbar g + ttbar gg and tbW interactions beyond the standard model, we first derive analytical formulas for the corresponding parton-parton processes. We then compute the lepton angular, energy and transverse-momentum distributions in ppbar/pp collisions to clarify how they are affected by those anomalous couplin…
A phenomenological analysis is presented of recent two-particle angular correlation data on relative pseudorapidity ($η$) and azimuth reported by the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) Collaboration for $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV proton-proton collisions. The data are described with an empirical jet-like model developed for similar angular correlation measurements obtained from heavy ion collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The same-side (small relative azimuth), $η$-extended correlation structure, referred to as the {\em ridge}, is compared with three phenomenological correlation struct…
Perturbative quantum chromodynamics (QCD) ceases to be applicable at low interaction energies due to the rapid increase of the strong coupling. In that limit, the non-perturbative regime determines the properties of quarks and gluons (partons) in terms of parton distribution functions (PDFs) or nuclear PDFs, based on whether they are confined within nucleons or nuclei respectively. Related non-perturbative dynamics describe the hadronisation of partons into hadrons and are encoded by the fragmentation functions (FFs). This thesis focuses on the detailed study of PDFs in protons and nuclei as w…
We review how RHIC is expected to deepen our understanding of the spin structure of longitudinally polarized nucleons. After briefly outlining the current status of spin-dependent parton densities and pointing out open questions, we focus on theoretical calculations and predictions relevant for the RHIC spin program. Estimates of the expected statistical accuracy for such measurements are presented, taking into account the acceptance of the RHIC detectors.
$Z^0$-boson production at low transverse momentum offers an unique opportunity to explore the non-perturbative Sudakov factor. In this paper, we employ three parameterizations of the non-perturbative Sudakov factor to calculate the $ϕ^*$-distribution and compare our results with the ultra precise experimental data. We extract the free parameters in each parameterization with a $χ^2$ analysis. The parton-momentum-fraction dependence of these free parameters is also studied by comparing the values extracted at different collision energies and different rapidity ranges.
We discuss our present understanding of the transverse spin structure of the nucleon and of related properties originating from parton transverse motion. Starting from the transversity distribution and the ways to access it, we then address the role played by spin and transverse momentum dependent (TMD) distributions in azimuthal and transverse single spin asymmetries. The latest extractions of the Sivers, Collins and transversity functions are also presented.
We study the orbital angular momentum contribution to the spin structure of the proton. It is well known that the quark and gluon spin contributions do not add up to the proton spin. We motivate the connection between the Generalized Transverse Momentum Distribution (GTMD) $F_{14}$, and orbital angular momentum by exploring the underlying quark proton helicity amplitude structure. The twist three Generalized Parton Distribution (GPD) $\tilde{E}_{2T}$, was shown to connect to OAM. We study these functions using a diquark model calculation. The GTMD $F_{14}$ is unique in that it can describe bot…
A Glasma flux-tube model has been proposed to explain strong elongation on pseudorapidity $η$ of the same-side 2D peak in minimum-bias angular correlations from $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200$ GeV \auau collisions. The same-side peak or "soft ridge" is said to arise from coupling of flux tubes to radial flow. Gluons radiated transversely from flux tubes are boosted by radial flow to form a narrow structure or ridge on azimuth. In this study we test the conjecture by comparing predictions for particle production, spectra and correlations from the Glasma model and conventional fragmentation processes with…
We perform the first global QCD analysis of pion valence, sea quark, and gluon distributions within a Bayesian Monte Carlo framework with threshold resummation on Drell-Yan cross sections at next-to-leading log accuracy. Exploring various treatments of resummation, we find that the large-$x$ asymptotics of the valence quark distribution $\sim (1-x)^{β_v}$ can differ significantly, with $β_v$ ranging from $\approx 1$ to $> 2.5$ at the input scale. Regardless of the specific implementation, however, the resummation induced redistribution of the momentum between valence quarks and gluons boosts t…
The impact of recent precision measurements of DIS structure functions and inclusive jet production at the Tevatron on the global QCD analysis of parton distribution functions is studied in detail. Particular emphasis is placed on exploring the range of variation of the gluon distribution $G(x,Q)$ allowed by these new data. The strong coupling of $G(x,Q)$ with $α_s$ is fully taken into account. A new generation of CTEQ parton distributions, CTEQ4, is presented. It consists of the three standard sets (\mbox{\small {$\overline {\rm MS}$}}, {\protect \small DIS} and leading order), a series that …
Di-jet correlations in nucleus-nucleus collisions are studied within the Hadron-String-Dynamics (HSD) transport approach taking into account the reaction of the medium on the jet energy loss nonperturbatively. A comparison with the STAR and PHENIX data in central Au+Au collisions at the RHIC energy $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV is performed differentially, i.e. with respect to correlations in azimuthal angle $Δϕ$ and pseudorapidity $Δη$. The HSD results do not show enough suppression for the `away-side' jets in accordance with earlier perturbative studies. Furthermore, the `Mach-cone' structure for the a…
The crucial parameter of the current Monte Carlo models of high energy hadron-hadron interaction is the transverse momentum cutoff $p_{T0}$ for parton-parton interactions which slowly grows with energy and regularizes the cross section. This modification of the collinear factorization formula goes beyond the leading power and thus a natural question arises if such cutoff can be extracted from a formalism which takes into account power corrections. In this work, we consider the High Energy Factorization (HEF) valid at small $x$ and a new model, based on a similar principle to HEF, which in addi…
We present results for a complete set of polarization observables for jet production in lepton proton collision, where the final state lepton is not observed. The calculations are carried out in collinear factorization at the level of Born diagrams. For all the observables we also provide numerical estimates for typical kinematics of a potential future Electron Ion Collider. On the basis of this numerical study, the prospects for the transverse single target spin asymmetry are particularly promising. This observable is given by a certain quark-gluon correlation function, which has a direct rel…
An accurate knowledge of nuclear parton distribution functions (nPDFs) is an essential ingredient of high energy physics calculations when the processes are involving nuclei in the initial state. It is well known now that the prompt photon production both in hadronic and nuclear collisions is a powerful tool for exploring the parton densities in the nucleon and nuclei especially of the gluon. In this work, we are going to perform a comprehensive study of the isolated prompt photon production in $ p $-Pb collisions at backward rapidities to find the best kinematic regions in which the experimen…
Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) offer a new way to access the quark and gluon nucleon structure. We review recent progress in this domain, emphasizing the need to supplement the experimental study of deeply virtual Compton scattering by its crossed version, timelike Compton scattering. We also describe the extension of the GPD concept to three quark operators and the relevance of their nucleon to meson matrix elements, namely the transition distribution amplitudes (TDAs) which factorize in backward meson electroproduction and related processes. We discuss the main properties of the TDA…
The last few years have seen community-wide excitement in the study of jet substructure derived from the inner workings of clustering algorithms. Such efforts have resulted in the design of new observables which are related to partonic processes from final state hadrons. Since jets are multi-scale objects, they necessarily encode information about both the perturbative (pQCD) parton shower and non-perturbative (npQCD) physics including hadronization. Recent high precision measurements of jet substructure in proton-proton (pp) collisions have pushed the theoretical community into extending thei…
Since the parton model was introduced by Feynman more than fifty years ago, we have learned much about the partonic structure of the proton through a large body of high-energy experimental data and dedicated global fits. However, calculating the partonic observables such as parton distribution function (PDFs) from the fundamental theory of strong interactions, QCD, has made limited progress. Recently, the authors have advocated a formalism, large-momentum effective theory (LaMET), through which one can extract parton physics from the properties of the proton travelling at a moderate boost-fact…
We present here a possible resolution of the jet quenching parameter $\hat{q}$ puzzle by exploring the momentum fraction $x$ and scale $Q^2$ dependence of $\hat{q}$, in addition to temperature dependence. We explore the momentum broadening of the jet due to Glauber gluon exchange with the quark-gluon plasma (QGP). This has led us to define the momentum fraction $x$ for the partons in the QGP. We also show here, for the first time, possible forms of the parton distribution function (PDF) of the QGP. The QGP-PDF as input in $\hat{q}$ has been used to fit the PHENIX and CMS data simultaneously. W…
