We discuss results for n-gluon correlations that form the basis of the Glasma flux tube picture of early times in heavy ion collisions. Our formalism is valid to all orders in perturbation theory at leading logarithmic accuracy in x and includes both QCD bremsstrahlung and the many body screening and recombination effects that are important at large parton densities. Long range rapidity correlations, as seen in the near-side ridge in heavy ion collisions, are a chronometer of these early time strong color field dynamics. They also contain information on how radial flow develops in heavy ion collisions.
We study ridge correlations of the glasma in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=7$ TeV by using the color glass condensate (CGC) formalism. The azimuthal collimation at long range rapidity is intrinsic to glasma dynamics and is reproduced here. When rapidity window enlarges, ridge correlations in two dimensional $Δy$-$Δϕ$ distribution and one dimensional $Δϕ$ distribution at long range rapidity gap are enhanced. The enhancements are demonstrated to be the contributions of source gluons. The quantum evolution of the gluons presents unique correlation patterns in differential correlation f…
The similarities between string percolation and Glasma results are emphasized, special attention being paid to rapidity long range correlations, ridge structure and elliptic flow. As the string density of high multiplicity pp collisions at LHC energies has similar value as the corresponding to Au-Au semi-central collisions at RHIC we also expect in pp collisions long rapidity correlations and ridge structure, extended more than 8 units in rapidity.

Using the CGC formalism, we calculate the two-gluon rapidity correlations of strong colour fields in $pp$, $pA$ and $AA$ collisions, respectively. If one trigger gluon is fixed at central rapidity, a ridge-like correlation pattern is obtained in symmetry $pp$ and $AA$ collisions, and a huge bump-like correlation pattern is presented in asymmetry $pA$ collisions. It is demonstrated that the ridge-like correlation patterns are caused by the stronger correlation with the gluon of colour source. The transverse momentum and incident energy dependence of the ridge-like correlation pattern is also sy…
The ridge particles associated with a near-side jet are identified as medium partons kicked by the jet near the surface. They carry direct information on the parton momentum distribution at the moment of jet-parton collisions and the magnitude of the longitudinal momentum kick. The extracted early parton momentum distribution has a rapidity plateau structure with a thermal-like transverse momentum distribution. Such a rapidity plateau structure may arise from particle production in flux tubes, as color charges and anti-color charges separate at high energies.
The CMS collaboration at the LHC has reported a remarkable and unexpected phenomenon in very high-multiplicity high energy proton-proton collisions: a positive correlation between two particles produced at similar azimuthal angles, spanning a large range in rapidity. We suggest that this "ridge"-like correlation may be a reflection of the rare events generated by the collision of aligned flux tubes connecting the valence quarks in the wave functions of the colliding protons. The "spray" of particles resulting from the approximate line source produced in such inelastic collisions then gives ris…
I propose a simple explanation of the ``ridge'' seen in the near-side jet two-particle correlation function in heavy ion collisions at RHIC. This could be a cumulative shock wave produced in liquid-like matter by an energetic stopped parton. Splash of liquid in the direction opposite to the fast penetrating object is a known effect. In nucleus-nucleus collision the trigger is an escaped non-interacting parton. Partner parton could be stopped in the medium forming a conical-like shock wave with density depletion behind the stopped parton. In the proposed scenario shock waves will move in three …
We obtain a novel result in QCD for long range rapidity correlations between gluons produced in the collision of saturated high energy hadrons or nuclei. This result, obtained in a high energy factorization framework, provides strong justification for the Glasma flux tube picture of coherent strong color fields. Our formalism can be applied to "near side ridge" events at RHIC and in future studies of long range rapidity correlations at the LHC.
In a central nucleus-nucleus collision at high-energies, medium partons kicked by a near-side jet acquire a momentum along the jet direction and subsequently materialize as the observed ridge particles. They carry direct information on the early parton momentum distribution which can be extracted by using the ridge data for central AuAu collisions at \sqrt{s_{NN}}=200 GeV. The extracted parton momentum distribution has a thermal-like transverse momentum distribution but a non-Gaussian, relatively flat rapidity distribution at mid-rapidity with sharp kinematic boundaries at large rapidities tha…
I discuss the ridge phenomena observed in heavy ion collisions at RHIC. I argue that the ridge may be due to flux tubes formed from the Color Glass Condensate in the early Glasma phase of matter produced in such collisions
Particle yields in heavy ion collisions show an overwhelming evidence for chemical or relative chemical equilibrium at all beam energies. The rapidity dependence of the thermal parameters $T$ and $μ_B$ can now be determined over a wide range of rapidities and show a systematic behavior towards an increase in $μ_B$ away from mid-rapidity.
We explore the relationship between the Glasma framework and the String Percolation Model by introducing a simple model for the rapidity distributions in nucleus-nucleus collisions. The model is solved for both symmetrical and asymmetrical collisions. The phenomenon of limiting fragmentation is briefly discussed.
We consider (anti-)baryons production in heavy ion collisions as production of topological defects during the chiral phase transition. Non-zero quark masses which explicitly break chiral symmetry supress the (anti-)baryon density. Hardly any (anti-)baryons will be produced in the central rapidity region of a heavy ion collision.
I define the proton-contributor reference frame in proton nucleus (p--A) collisions as the center of mass of the system formed by the proton and the participant nucleons of the nucleus. Assuming that the rapidity distribution of produced particles is symmetric in the proton-contributor reference frame, several measurements in p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 5.02 {\rm TeV}$ can be described qualitatively. These include rapidity distributions of charged particles, $J/ψ$ and Z bosons.
An unexpected result at the RHIC and the LHC is the observation that high-multiplicity hadronic events in heavy-ion and proton-proton collisions are distributed as two "ridges", approximately flat in rapidity and opposite in azimuthal angle. We propose that the origin of these events is due to the inelastic collisions of aligned gluonic flux tubes that underly the color confinement of the quarks in each proton. We predict that high-multiplicity hadronic ridges will also be produced in the high energy photon-photon collisions accessible at the LHC in ultra-peripheral proton-proton collisions or…
We look at the new two-particle Bose-Einstein correlation (BEC) function accompanied by the color-electric flux model which can explain the "ridge" behavior in enhanced angular correlation between two identical pions at very broad rapidity with high multiplicity. We argue that such an investigation could probe both the size and the temperature of the source of two pions emitted into a narrow range of azimuthal angles. We can confirm the ev- idence for quark-gluon phase due to interaction of outgoing pions (having high transverse momenta) with the medium in thermal bath in proton-proton collisi…
The survival probability of large rapidity gaps in pp collisions is calculated for several different eikonal models of the Gaussian form. Results obtained for models based on partonic interactions are quite similar. The Regge-pole model predicts a higher value of $ < \vert S \vert^{2} > $ .
We illustrate how a generalization of the JIMWLK formalism which treats independently the direct and complex conjugate amplitudes can be used to describe semi-inclusive multiparticle production with rapidity correlations in pA collisions. The evolution equations that are obtained with this formalism are susceptible of numerical implementation as a Langevin process.
The study of possible new physics signals in global event properties in pp collisions in the TeV energy domain is extended from full phase-space to rapidity intervals experimentally accessible at LHC. The elbow structure in the total multiplicity distribution predicted in full phase-space is clearly present also in restricted rapidity intervals, leading to very strong charged particle correlations. It is also found that energy densities comparable to those reached in heavy ion collisions at RHIC could be attained in pp collisions at LHC.
A model of multiparticle production in hadronic collisions at ultra-relativistic energies, based on the assumption of independent string fragmentation, reproduces the rapidity spectra of $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ in sulphur-sulphur collisions reported by the NA35 Collaboration. This is achieved after a reconsideration of the intermediate multi-string states and the structure of the diquarks. Nuclear stopping power is also studied through the computation of the $p-\bar{p}$ rapidity spectra.
We discuss azimuthal correlations in $dAu$ collisions at different rapidities and centralities and argue that experimentally observed depletion of the back-to-back peak can be quantitatively explained by gluon saturation in the Color Glass Condensate of the Gold nucleus.
We study the transverse momenta and (pseudo)rapidity spectrum of the top quark and their decay products, the tt-system, and the total number of jets in proton-proton (pp) collisions at 13 TeV by using the Tsallis-Pareto-type function and the three-source Landau hydrodynamic model, respectively. The related parameters, such as the effective temperature of the interacting system (T), the non-extensivity of the process (n) and the width ($σ$) of (pseudo)rapidity distribution are extracted.
We consider, for the first time, correlations between produced quarks in p-A collisions in the framework of the Color Glass Condensate. We find a quark-quark ridge that shows a dip at $Δη\sim 2$ relative to the gluon-gluon ridge. The origin of this dip is the short range (in rapidity) Pauli blocking experienced by quarks in the wave function of the incoming projectile. We observe that these correlations, present in the initial state, survive the scattering process. We suggest that this effect may be observable in open charm-open charm correlations at the Large Hadron Collider.
We revisit the rapidity dependence of the average transverse momentum $\left\langle p_{T}\right\rangle$ in a $pp$ and $pA$ collision, using the high energy factorization (HEF). We update previous predictions for the $\left\langle p_{T}\right\rangle$ both in central and forward rapidity region using parton densities following from extended BK and BFKL evolution equations to account for corrections of higher orders as well as one obtained by Sudakov resummation. Furthermore, we demonstrate that in the mid rapidity region the saturation based formalisms predict increase of the transversal momentu…
In the colour string picture with fusion and percolation it is shown that long range azimuthal-rapidity correlations (ridge) can arise from the superposition of many events with exchange of clusters of different number of strings and not from a single event. Relation of the ridge with the flow harmonics coefficients is derived. By direct Monte-Carlo simulations, in the technique previously used to calculate these coefficients, ridge correlations are calculated for AA, pA and pp collisions. The azimuthal anisotropy follows from the assumed quenching of the emitted particles in the strong colour…
The calculation of inclusive spectra of pions produced in $pp$ and $AA$ collisions as a function of rapidity $y$ is presented within the self-similarity approach. It is shown that at not large rapidities $y$ one can obtain the analytical form of the self-similarity function $Π(y,p_t)$ dependent of $y$ and hadron transverse momentum $p_t$. A satisfactory description of data on the rapidity spectra at $|y|\leq$ 0.3 is illustrated within a good agreement. The universal energy dependence of these spectra is also shown.
We discuss the rapidity distribution of produced jets in heavy-ion collisions at LHC. The process allows one to determine to a good accuracy the value of the impact parameter of the nuclear collision in each single inelastic event. The knowledge of the geometry is a powerful tool for a detailed analysis of the process, making it possible to test the various different elements which, in accordance with present theoretical ideas, take part to the production mechanism.
We investigate the consequences of long range rapidity correlations in the Glasma. Particles produced locally in the transverse plane are correlated by approximately boost invariant flux tubes of longitudinal color electric and magnetic fields that are formed when two sheets of Colored Glass Condensate pass through one another, each acquiring a modified color charge density in the collision. We argue that such long range rapidity correlations persist during the evolution of the Quark Gluon Plasma formed later in the collision. When combined with transverse flow, these correlations reproduce ma…
The shapes of invariant differential cross section for charged particle production as function of transverse momentum measured in pp collisions by the UA1 detector are analyzed. The spectra shape varies with the produced particle's pseudorapidity changing. To describe this and several other recently observed effects a simple qualitative model for hadroproduction mechanism was proposed.
We show that the Dual String Model with fusion leads, in heavy ion collisions, to strict saturation of the particle (pseudo-)rapidity density, normalised to the number of participant nucleons, as that number increases. Asymptotically, as the centre-of-mass energy goes to infinity with the number of participants fixed, this density approaches the nucleon-nucleon density. A comparison with recent WA98 data is presented.
High energy hadronic interactions can produce a final state characterized by minijets separated by a large gap in the rapidity distribution of the produced secondary particles. We discuss the process by keeping into account the possibility of having multiple parton collisions in the hadronic interaction. At Tevatron energy the correction to the single scattering term induced by the presence of multiparton interactions is large for transverse momenta smaller than 6 GeV.
The production of jet pairs with small transverse momentum and large relative rapidity in high energy hadron-hadron collisions is studied. The rise of the parton-level cross section with increasing rapidity gap is a fundamental prediction of the BFKL `perturbative pomeron' equation of Quantum Chromodynamics. However, at fixed collider energy it is difficult to disentangle this effect from variations in the cross section due to the parton distributions. It is proposed to study instead the distribution in the azimuthal angle difference of the jets as a function of the rapidity gap. The flattenin…
The self-consistent approach based on similarity of inclusive spectra of hadrons produced in $pp$ and $AA$ collisions is reviewed. This approach allows us to describe rather well the ratio of proton to anti-proton yields in $AA$ collisions as a function of the initial energy at a wide range from a few GeV to a few TeV. We suggest its modification due to the quark-gluon dynamics to describe the inclusive spectra of hadrons produced in $pp$ collision as a function of the transverse momentum $p_t$ at mid-rapidity. The extension of this approach to analyze the pion $p_t$-spectra produced in $AA$ c…
In AA collisions fusion and percolation of colour strings is studied at fixed rapidity $y$. Distribution of strings in rapidity is obtained from the observed rapidity spectra in pp collisions. For $y$-dependence of multiplicities in Au-Au collisions good agreement is obtained with the existing experimental data. Predictions for LHC energies coincide with the extrapolation of the data. Agreement with the data of the transverse momentum spectra requires introduction of quenching into the model.
A systematic analysis of transverse momentum and rapidity distributions measured in high-energy proton - proton (pp) collisions for energies ranging from 53 GeV to 7 TeV using Tsallis thermodynamics is presented. The excellent description of all transverse momentum spectra obtained in earlier analyses is confirmed and extended. All energies can be described by a single Tsallis temperature of 68 +/- 5 MeV at all beam energies and particle types investigated (43 in total). The value of the entropic index, q, shows a wider spread but is always close to q approx 1.146. These values are then used t…
The results of the WA97 collaboration for strange particle production at mid-rapidity in Pb--Pb collisions at 158 GeV A/c at CERN display a strong strangeness enhancement with system size at mid-rapidity which is dependent on the strangeness of the particle concerned, and saturates at values of participating nucleons greater than 120. These results are phenomenologically described by the mixed canonical ensemble, with canonical (exact) strangeness conservation involving all strange resonances, and grand canonical conservation of charge and baryon number. A detailed quantitative analysis shows …
We investigate long range rapidity correlations of pairs of prompt photon and jet in the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) framework in proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions at RHIC and the LHC. We show that photon-jet correlations exhibit long-range azimuthal collimation at near-side for low transverse momenta of the produced photon and jet in high-multiplicity events. These ridge-like features are strikingly similar to the observed ridge effect for di-hadron correlations at RHIC and the LHC. We show that correlations in the relative rapidity and the relative azimuthal angle between pairs of…
Measured multiplicity distributions of primary charged particles produced in the forward rapidity region of the $proton-proton$ ($pp$) collisions at the centre-of-mass energy, $\sqrt {s}$ = 7 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) have been analyzed in terms of the Negative Binomial Distribution (NBD) function. Like the multiplicity distributions in the mid-rapidity region for the $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt {s}$ = 7 TeV, the distributions for the minimum bias events in the forward region also are better described with the superposition of two-NBDs, as proposed by a two-component model of partic…
Final state average transverse energy and charged particle multiplicity at the central rapidity unit of central Au-Au collisions at RHIC are studied within a framework of lowest order perturbative QCD and Bjorken's hydrodynamical picture. In particular, effects of initial minijet production and the $pdV$ work during the subsequent evolution of the QGP are investigated. Nuclear shadowing effects are included in a consistent manner, and the dependence of the results on the minijet transverse momentum cut-off parameter $p_0$ is shown.
We analyse recent results on charged particle pseudo-rapidity densities from RHIC in the framework of the Dual String Model, in particular when including string fusion. The model, in a simple way, agrees with all the existing data and is consistent with the presence of the percolation transition to the Quark-Gluon Plasma already at the CERN-SPS. It leads to strict saturation of the particle (pseudo-)rapidity density, normalised to the number of participant nucleons, as that number increases. A comparison with recent WA98 data is presented.
The quark combination mechanism of hadron production is applied to nucleus-nucleus collisions at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) and BNL Alternating Gradient Synchrotron (AGS). The rapidity spectra of identified hadrons and their spectrum widths are studied. The data of $π^{-}$, $K^{\pm}$, $ϕ$, $Λ$, $\barΛ$, $Ξ^{-}$, and $\barΞ^{+}$ at 80 and 40 AGeV, in particular at 30 and 20 AGeV where the onset of deconfinement is suggested to happen, are consistently described by the quark combination model. However at AGS 11.6 AGeV below the onset the spectra of $π^{\pm}$, $K^{\pm}$ and $Λ$ can n…
The CMS collaboration has recently reported the appearance of a same-side "ridge" structure in two-particle angular correlations from 7 TeV p-p collisions. The ridge in p-p collisions at 7 TeV has been compared to a ridge structure in more-central Au-Au collisions at 0.2 TeV interpreted by some as evidence for a dense, flowing QCD medium. In this study we make a detailed comparison between 0.2 TeV p-p correlations and the CMS results. We find that 7 TeV minimum-bias jet correlations are remarkably similar to those at 0.2 TeV, even to the details of the same-side peak geometry. Extrapolation of…
We discuss the physics of the ridge -- azimuthally collimated long range rapidity correlations -- in high multiplicity proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions. We outline some of the theoretical discussions in the literature that address the systematics of these ridge correlations.
A study of the near-side ridge phenomenon in hadron-hadron collisions based on a cluster picture of multiparticle production is presented. The near-side ridge effect is shown to have a natural explanation in this context provided that clusters are produced in a correlated manner in the collision transverse plane.
We point out that Bose enhancement in a hadronic wave function generically leads to correlations between produced particles. We show explicitly, by calculating the projectile density matrix in the Color Glass Condensate approach to high-energy hadronic collisions, that the Bose enhancement of gluons in the projectile leads to azimuthal collimation of long range rapidity correlations of the produced particles, the so-called ridge correlations.
It is shown that the soft mechanism of multiparticle production by Lund hadronic strings formed by colliding constituent degrees of freedom generates a shape of angular correlations similar to the ridge structure observed in the pp collisions at 7 TeV at the LHC.
We discuss the general mechanism leading to long-range rapidity and angular correlations produced in high energy collisions (the "ridge"). This effect naturally appears in the high energy QCD and is strongly sensitive to physics of the gluon saturation. We comment on various recent practical realizations of the main idea, paying special attention to $N_c$ counting and stress the relevance of Pomeron loops.
It is shown that the anomalous sharp increasing of the strength of the near-side ridge structures observed in Au-Au collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$ 62 GeV and $\sqrt{s}=$ 200 GeV and the onset of the ridge structure in pPb and in pp collisions can be naturally explained in the framework of string percolation. In all the cases the near-side strength reflects the collision area covered by the strings stretched between the colliding objects and therefore it is related to the shape of their profile functions. The dependence of the pseudorapidty and azimuthal widths on multiplicty and energy is qualitati…
We use multiple scattering and energy conservation arguments to describe $dn/dη_{NANA}$ as a function of $dn/dη_{pp}$ in the framework of string percolation. We discuss the pseudo-rapidity $η$? and beam rapidity Y dependence of particle densities. We present our results for pp, Au- Au, and Pb-Pb collisions at RHIC and LHC.
We study untriggered di-hadron correlations in Pb+Pb at 2.76 TeV, based on an event-by-event simulation of a hydrodynamic expansion starting from flux tube initial conditions. The correlation function shows interesting structures as a function of the pseudorapidity difference $Δη$ and the azimuthal angle difference $Δϕ$, in particular comparing different centralities. We can clearly identify a peak-like nearside structure associated with very low momentum components of jets for peripheral collisions, which disappears towards central collisions. On the other hand, a very broad ridge structure f…
We compute the rapidity dependence of particle and transverse energy production in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions at various beam energies and atomic numbers using the perturbative QCD + saturation model. The distribution is a broad gaussian near $y=0$ but the rapid increase of particle production with the beam energy will via energy conservation strongly constrain the rapidity distribution at large $y$.
We extract the early parton momentum distribution using the STAR Collaboration data of ridge particles associated with a near-side jet in central AuAu collisions at \sqrt{s_{NN}}=200 GeV. The ridge particles are identified as medium partons kicked by the jet near the surface and they carry direct information on the parton momentum distribution at the moment of jet-parton collisions. The extracted parton momentum distribution has a thermal-like transverse momentum distribution but a rapidity plateau structure with a relatively flat rapidity distribution at mid-rapidities with sharp kinematic bo…
By the sample generated by the AMPT with string melting model, we compare the azimuthal distributions of multiplicity, total transverse rapidity, and mean transverse rapidity. It is demonstrated that the azimuthal distribution of mean transverse rapidity is a good probe of the radial kinetic expansion. The anisotropic part of the distribution characterizes the anisotropic nature of the radial expansion, and isotropic part is combinations of thermal motion and isotropic radial expansion.
The rapidity dependence of the initial energy density in heavy-ion collisions is calculated from a three-dimensional McLerran-Venugopalan model (3dMVn) introduced by Lam and Mahlon. This model is infrared safe since global color neutrality is enforced. In this non-boost-invariant framework, the nuclei have non-zero thickness in the longitudinal direction. This results in Bjorken-x dependent unintegrated gluon distribution functions which lead to a rapidity-dependent initial energy density after the collision. The initial energy density and its rapidity dependence are important initial conditio…
We study the influence of the meson cloud of the nucleon on predictions of the Monte Carlo Glauber model for the charged particle multiplicity density at mid-rapidity in $AA$ collisions. We find that for central $AA$ collisions the meson cloud can increase the multiplicity density by $\sim 16-18$\%. The meson-baryon Fock component reduces the required fraction of the binary collisions by a factor of $\sim 2$ for Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s}=0.2$ TeV and $\sim 1.5$ for Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s}=2.76$ TeV.
The ridge signal, which is long-ranged in rapidity, in the di-hadron correlations in high-multiplicity p-p and p-A collisions opened up a whole new research area in high-energy QCD. Although the ridge had been observed in A-A collisions and interpreted as a result of the radial flow of quark-gluon plasma, it had not appeared until recently in the data of small collision systems such as p-p and p-A, nor had it been predicted theoretically or seen in the event generators. There are two competing approaches that attempt to explain the systematics of the di-hadron ridge signal; hydrodynamics and g…
