We describe a folklore construction of an exceptional representation of Sp(4,F_q). This representation has the following remarkable combination of properties, namely it is cuspidal, degenerate and unipotent.
We examine various consequences of the existence of exceptional representations of an irreducible Weyl group. (These are notes from a talk in the MIT Lie groups seminar.)
Let Q be a connected directed quiver with n vertices. We show that Q is representation-infinite if and only if there do exist n isomorphism classes of exceptional modules of some fixed length at least 2.
We study representations of GL(n) appearing as quotients of a tensor of exceptional representations, in the sense of Kazhdan and Patterson. Such representations are called distinguished. We characterize distinguished principal series representations in terms of their inducing data. In particular, we complete the proof of a conjecture of Savin, relating distinguished spherical representations to the image of the tautological lift from a suitable classical group.
In this paper, we study the reducibility of degenerate principal series of the simple, simply-connected exceptional group of type $E_6$. Furthermore, we calculate the maximal semi-simple subrepresentation and quotient of these representations.
In this paper, we study the reducibility of degenerate principal series of the simple, simply-connected exceptional group of type $E_8$. Furthermore, we calculate the maximal semi-simple subrepresentation and quotient of these representations for almost all cases.
Using a new definition of rank for representations of semisimple groups sharp results are proved for the decay of matrix coefficients of unitary representations of two types of non-split $p$-adic simple algebraic groups of exceptional type. These sharp bounds are achieved by minimal representations. It is also shown that in one of the cases considered, the minimal representation is isolated in the unitary dual.
We classify the finite-dimensional rational representations $V$ of the exceptional algebraic groups $G$ with $\mathfrak g={\sf Lie}(G)$ such that the symmetric invariants of the semi-direct product $\mathfrak g\ltimes V$, where $V$ is an Abelian ideal, form a polynomial ring.
Let $\mathcal{L}^{S}\left(s,π,χ,\operatorname{\mathfrak{st}}\right)$ be a standard twisted partial $\mathcal{L}$-function of degree $7$ of the cuspidal automorphic representation $π$ of the exceptional group of type $G_2$. In this paper we construct a family of Rankin-Selberg integrals representing this $\mathcal{L}$-function. As an application, we prove that the representations attaining certain prescribed poles are exactly the representations attained by $θ$-lift from a group of finite type.
In this article, we proove that it is equivalent for a generic irreducible representation of GL(n,K), with K a p-adic field, to be distinguished, and for its Rankin-Selberg Asai L-function to have an exceptional pole at zero. This extends a criterion of Kable claiming that a discrete series representation is distinguished if and only if its Asai L-function has a pole at zero. As an application we compute by local methods Asai L-functions of ordinary representations of GL(2,K), in particular we give a formula for Asai L-functions of principal series representations of GL(2,K).
In this paper, we study the degenerate principal series of a split, simply-connected, simple p-adic group of type $E_7$. We determine the points of reducibility and the maximal semi-simple subrepresentation at each point.
This paper is a resolution of three related problems proposed by Yu. I. Manin and V. Kac for the so-called {\it{exceptional}} Lie superalgebras F(4) and G(3). The first problem posed by Kac (1978) is the problem of finding character and superdimension formulae for the simple modules. The second problem posed by Kac (1978) is the problem of classifying all indecomposable representations. The third problem posed by Manin (1981) is the problem of constructing the {\it{superanalogue}} of Borel-Weil-Bott theorem.
We construct local and global metaplectic double covers of odd general spin groups, using the cover of Matsumoto of spin groups. Following Kazhdan and Patterson, a local exceptional representation is the unique irreducible quotient of a principal series representation, induced from a certain exceptional character. The global exceptional representation is obtained as the multi-residue of an Eisenstein series, it is an automorphic representation and decomposes as the restricted tensor product of local exceptional representations. As in the case of the small representation of SO(2n+1) of Bump, Fr…
This paper and its sequel describe the irreducible representations of the rational Cherednik algebra $H_c(W)$ for a finite Coxeter group $W$ of type $H_4$, $F_4$ with equal parameters, $E_6$, $E_7$, and $E_8$, when $c$ is not a half-integer. Herein appear the decomposition matrices of Category $\mathcal{O}_c(W)$ for $W=H_4$, $E_6$, and $E_7$, as well as a classification of finite-dimensional representations of $H_c(W)$ for these groups and for $H_c(F_4)$ with equal parameters.
Let $G$ be a split simply laced group defined over a $p$-adic field $F$. In this paper we study the restriction of the minimal representation of $G$ to various dual pairs in $G$. For example, the restriction of the minimal representation of $E_7$ to the dual pair $G_2 \times{}$Sp(6) gives the non-endoscopic Langlands lift of irreducible representations of $G_2$ to Sp(6).
We study the exceptional theta correspondence for real groups obtained by restricting the minimal representation of the split exceptional group of the type E_n, to a split dual pair where one member is the exceptional group of the type G_2. We prove that the correspondence gives a bijection between spherical representations if n=6,7, and a slightly weaker statement if n=8.
In the monograph arXiv:2108.03453, we define the notion of a unipotent representation of a complex reductive group. The representations we define include, as a proper subset, all special unipotent representations in the sense of Barbasch-Vogan and form the (conjectural) building blocks of the unitary dual. In arXiv:2108.03453 we provide combinatorial formulas for the infinitesimal characters of all unipotent representations of linear classical groups. In this paper, we establish analogous formulas for spin and exceptional groups, thus completing the determination of the infinitesimal character…
We define an involution on the space of elliptic unipotent Langlands parameters of a reductive $p$-adic group $G$ and verify that when $G$ is split adjoint exceptional, the composition of this involution with the hyperspecial parahoric restriction map agrees with Lusztig's nonabelian Fourier transform for unipotent representations of the finite reductive quotient. This is inspired by recent works of Lusztig on the almost unipotent characters of $p$-adic groups and of Moeglin and Waldspurger on the elliptic Fourier transform of odd orthogonal groups.
We consider the universal pivotal, symmetric, monoidal, $\Bbbk$-linear category, generated by a Schurian object with a skew-symmetric multiplication, and study some of its quotients. We show that these quotients give rise to either vector product algebras or representation categories of exceptional Lie algebras.
Let G be a simply connected simple algebraic group over an algebraically closed field K of characteristic p>0 with root system R, and let ${\mathfrak g}={\cal L}(G)$ be its restricted Lie algebra. Let V be a finite dimensional ${\mathfrak g}$-module over K. For any point $v\inV$, the {\it isotropy subalgebra} of $v$ in $\mathfrak g$ is ${\mathfrak g}_v=\{x\in{\mathfrak g}/x\cdot v=0\}$. A restricted ${\mathfrak g}$-module V is called exceptional if for each $v\in V$ the isotropy subalgebra ${\mathfrak g}_v$ contains a non-central element (that is, ${\mathfrak g}_v\not\subseteq {\mathfrak z(\ma…
We construct two infinite-dimensional irreducible representations for $D(2,1;α)$: a Schrödinger model and a Fock model. Further, we also introduce an intertwining isomorphism. These representations are similar to the minimal representations constructed for the orthosymplectic Lie supergroup and for Hermitian Lie groups of tube type. The intertwining isomorphism is the analogue of the Segal-Bargmann transform for the orthosymplectic Lie supergroup and for Hermitian Lie groups of tube type.
We construct a Fock model of the minimal representation of the exceptional Lie supergroup $\mathbb{D}(2,1, α)$. Explicit expressions for the action are given by integrating to group level a Fock model of the Lie superalgebra $D(2,1, α)$ constructed earlier by the authors. It is also shown that the representation is superunitary in the sense of de Goursac--Michel.
In this paper, we study the set of $Δ$-filtered modules of quasi-hereditary algebras arising from quotients of the double of quivers of type $A$. Our main result is that for any fixed $Δ$-dimension vector, there is a unique (up to isomorphism) exceptional $Δ$-filtered module. We then apply this result to show that there is always an open adjoint orbit in the nilpotent radical of a seaweed Lie algebra in $\mathrm{gl}_{n}(\field)$, thus answering positively in this $\mathrm{gl}_{n}(\field)$ case to a question raised independently by Michel Duflo and Dmitri Panyushev. An example of a seaweed Lie …
Exceptional modules are tree modules. A tree module usually has many tree bases and the corresponding coefficient quivers may look quite differently. The aim of this note is to introduce a class of exceptional modules which have a distinguished tree basis, we call them radiation modules (generalizing an inductive construction considered already by Kinser). For a Dynkin quiver, nearly all indecomposable representations turn out to be radiation modules, the only exception is the maximal indecomposable module in case E_8. Also, the exceptional representation of the generalized Kronecker quivers a…
Up to equivalence, this paper classifies all the irreducible unitary representations with non-zero Dirac cohomology for the following simple real exceptional Lie groups: ${\rm EI}=E_{6(6)}, {\rm EIV}=E_{6(-26)}, {\rm FI}=F_{4(4)}, {\rm FII}=F_{4(-20)}$. Along the way, we find an irreducible unitary representation of $F_{4(4)}$ whose Dirac index vanishes, while its Dirac cohomology is non-zero. This disproves a conjecture raised in 2015 asserting that there should be no cancellation between the even part and the odd part of the Dirac cohomology.
This paper contains the decomposition matrices for blocks of defect at most $2$ in Category $\mathcal{O}_c(W)$ of the rational Cherednik algebra when $W=E_8$ or $F_4$ with equal parameters $c=1/d$, $d>2$ a regular number of $W$. A corollary of the result is a classification of the dimensions of support of the irreducible modules $L(τ)$ in $\mathcal{O}_{1/d}(W)$ except in the following cases: $W=E_8$, $d=4$ or $6$ and $L(τ)$ is in the principal block, or $d=2$ or $3$; $W=F_4$, $d=2$. In particular, this classifies the finite-dimensional modules of $H_c(E_8)$ when $d\neq 2,3,4,6$.
A notion of rank developed previously by the author is used to describe two correspondences which classify small unitary representations of split real forms of $E_6$ and $E_7$. The case of small principal series is studied in detail.
Arthur has conjectured that the unitarity of a number of representations can be shown by finding appropriate automorphic realizations. This has been verified for classical groups by Moeglin and for the exceptional Chevalley group G_2 by Kim. In this paper we extend their results on spherical representations to the remaining exceptional groups E_6, E_7, E_8, and F_4. In particular we prove Arthur's conjecture that the spherical constituent of an unramified principal series of a Chevalley group over any local field of characteristic zero is unitarizable if its Langlands parameter coincides with …
Exceptional sequences are important sequences of quiver representations in the study of representation theory of algebras. They are also closely related to the theory of cluster algebras and the combinatorics of Coxeter groups. We combinatorially classify exceptional sequences of a family of type D Dynkin quivers, and we show how our model for exceptional sequences connects to the combinatorics of type D noncrossing partitions.
We study quartic double fivefolds from the perspective of Fano manifolds of Calabi-Yau type and that of exceptional quaternionic representations. We first prove that the generic quartic double fivefold can be represented, in a finite number of ways, as a double cover of P^5 ramified along a linear section of the Sp 12-invariant quartic in P^31. Then, using the geometry of the Vinberg's type II decomposition of some exceptional quaternionic representations, and backed by some cohomological computations performed by Macaulay2, we prove the existence of a spherical rank 6 vector bundle on such a …

The ancillary files contain the computer generated part of the proofs of the main results in [13] respectively [12], giving a complete and general list of tree representations correspondin…
We complete the classification of maximal representations of uniform complex hyperbolic lattices in Hermitian Lie groups by dealing with the exceptional groups ${\rm E}_6$ and ${\rm E}_7$. We prove that if $ρ$ is a maximal representation of a uniform complex hyperbolic lattice $Γ\subset{\rm SU}(1,n)$, $n>1$, in an exceptional Hermitian group $G$, then $n=2$ and $G={\rm E}_6$, and we describe completely the representation $ρ$. The case of classical Hermitian target groups was treated by Vincent Koziarz and the second named author (arxiv:1506.07274). However we do not focus immediately on the ex…
We consider the finite $W$-algebra $U(\g,e)$ associated to a nilpotent element $e \in \g$ in a simple complex Lie algebra $\g$ of exceptional type. Using presentations obtained through an algorithm based on the PBW-theorem, we verify a conjecture of Premet, that $U(\g,e)$ always has a 1-dimensional representation, when $\g$ is of type $G_2$, $F_4$, $E_6$ or $E_7$. Thanks to a theorem of Premet, this allows one to deduce the existence of minimal dimension representations of reduced enveloping algebras of modular Lie algebras of the above types. In addition, a theorem of Losev allows us to deduc…
Exceptional sequences are certain ordered sequences of quiver representations. We use noncrossing edge-labeled trees in a disk with boundary vertices (expanding on T. Araya's work) to classify exceptional sequences of representations of Q, the linearly-ordered quiver with n vertices. We also show how to use variations of this model to classify c-matrices of Q, to interpret exceptional sequences as linear extensions, and to give a simple bijection between exceptional sequences and certain chains in the lattice of noncrossing partitions. In the case of c-matrices, we also give an interpretation …
Let $\mathbf{G}$ be a split algebrac group of type $E_n$ defined over a $p$-adic field. This group contains a dual pair $G \times G'$ where one of the groups is of type $G_2$. The minimal representation of $\mathbf{G}$, when restricted to the dual pair, gives a correspondence of representations of the two groups in the dual pair. We prove a matching of spherical Hecke algebras of $G$ and $G'$, when acting on the minimal representation. This implies that the correspondence is functorial, in the sense of Arthur and Langlands, for spherical representations.
Let $π$ be an irreducible admissible representation of $GL_m(F)$, where $F$ is a non-archimedean local field of characteristic zero. We follow the method developed by Cogdell and Piatetski-Shapiro to complete the computation of the local exterior square $L$-function $L(s,π,\wedge^2)$ in terms of $L$-functions of supercuspidal representations via an integral representation established by Jacquet and Shalika in $1990$. We analyze the local exterior square $L$-functions via exceptional poles and Bernstein and Zelevinsky derivatives. With this result, we show the equality of the local analytic $L$…
Given a simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, Kostant's weight $q$-multiplicity formula is an alternating sum over the Weyl group whose terms involve the $q$-analog of Kostant's partition function. For $ξ$ (a weight of $\mathfrak{g}$), the $q$-analog of Kostant's partition function is a polynomial-valued function defined by $\wp_q(ξ)=\sum c_i q^i$ where $c_i$ is the number of ways $ξ$ can be written as a sum of $i$ positive roots of $\mathfrak{g}$. In this way, the evaluation of Kostant's weight $q$-multiplicity formula at $q = 1$ recovers the multiplicity of a weight in a highest weight represen…
Exceptional sequences are certain ordered sequences of quiver representations. We introduce a class of objects called strand diagrams and use this model to classify exceptional sequences of representations of a quiver whose underlying graph is a type $A_n$ Dynkin diagram. We also use variations of this model to classify c-matrices of such quivers, to interpret exceptional sequences as linear extensions of posets, and to give a simple bijection between exceptional sequences and certain chains in the lattice of noncrossing partitions. This work extends a classification of exceptional sequences f…
Let $A$ be a finite-dimensional algebra over an algebraically closed field. The problem of constructing indecomposable $A$-modules inductively from simple ones by means of exact sequences - called accessibility - is the starting point of the present diploma-thesis. It has lead us to the consideration of exceptional and indecomposable tree-representations of finite quivers. Following Ringel, we prove his result that exceptional representations are tree-representations. We give a detailed description of the various aspects of the Schofield-Induction which plays an important role in the proof. Mo…
The uniformity, for the family of exceptional Lie algebras g, of the decompositions of the powers of their adjoint representations is well-known now for powers up to the fourth. The paper describes an extension of this uniformity for the totally antisymmetrised n-th powers up to n=9, identifying (see Tables 3 and 6) families of representations with integer eigenvalues 5,...,9 for the quadratic Casimir operator, in each case providing a formula (see eq. (11) to (15)) for the dimensions of the representations in the family as a function of D=dim g. This generalises previous results for powers j …
We establish character formulae for representations of the one-parameter family of simple Lie superalgebras $D(2|1;ζ)$. We provide a complete description of the Verma flag multiplicities of the tilting modules and the projective modules in the BGG category $\mathcal O$ of $D(2|1;ζ)$-modules of integral weights, for any complex parameter $ζ$. The composition factors of all Verma modules in $\mathcal O$ are then obtained.
The paper studies the minimum polynomial degrees of $p$-elements in cross-characteristic representations of simple groups of exceptional Lie type whose BN-pair rank is at most 2. Specifically, we prove that the degree in question equals the order of the element.
Theta series for exceptional groups have been suggested as a possible description of the eleven-dimensional quantum supermembrane. We present explicit formulae for these automorphic forms whenever the underlying Lie group $G$ is split (or complex) and simply laced. Specifically, we review and construct explicitly the minimal representation of $G$, generalizing the Schrödinger representation of symplectic groups. We compute the spherical vector in this representation, i.e. the wave function invariant under the maximal compact subgroup, which plays the role of the summand in the automorphic thet…
For a simple Lie algebra, over $\mathbb{C}$, we consider the weight which is the sum of all simple roots and denote it $\tildeα$. We formally use Kostant's weight multiplicity formula to compute the "dimension" of the zero-weight space. In type $A_r$, $\tildeα$ is the highest root, and therefore this dimension is the rank of the Lie algebra. In type $B_r$, this is the defining representation, with dimension equal to 1. In the remaining cases, the weight $\tildeα$ is not dominant and is not the highest weight of an irreducible finite-dimensional representation. Kostant's weight multiplicity for…
