Exceptional sequences are important sequences of quiver representations in the study of representation theory of algebras. They are also closely related to the theory of cluster algebras and the combinatorics of Coxeter groups. We combinatorially classify exceptional sequences of a family of type D Dynkin quivers, and we show how our model for exceptional sequences connects to the combinatorics of type D noncrossing partitions.
Exceptional sequences are certain ordered sequences of quiver representations. We introduce a class of objects called strand diagrams and use this model to classify exceptional sequences of representations of a quiver whose underlying graph is a type $A_n$ Dynkin diagram. We also use variations of this model to classify c-matrices of such quivers, to interpret exceptional sequences as linear extensions of posets, and to give a simple bijection between exceptional sequences and certain chains in the lattice of noncrossing partitions. This work extends a classification of exceptional sequences f…
The notion of a $τ$-exceptional sequence was introduced by Buan and Marsh in 2018 as a generalisation of an exceptional sequence for finite dimensional algebras. We calculate the number of complete $τ$-exceptional sequences over certain classes of Nakayama algebras. In some cases, we obtain closed formulas which also count other well known combinatorial objects and exceptional sequences of path algebras of Dynkin quivers.
Exceptional sequences are certain ordered sequences of quiver representations. We use noncrossing edge-labeled trees in a disk with boundary vertices (expanding on T. Araya's work) to classify exceptional sequences of representations of Q, the linearly-ordered quiver with n vertices. We also show how to use variations of this model to classify c-matrices of Q, to interpret exceptional sequences as linear extensions, and to give a simple bijection between exceptional sequences and certain chains in the lattice of noncrossing partitions. In the case of c-matrices, we also give an interpretation …
This is a survey on the categorification of the poset of generalized non-crossing partitions, using the representation theory of a hereditary artin algebra H, looking at the set P of exceptional subcategories in mod H. This categorification is due to Ingalls and Thomas, and a subsequent paper by Igusa and Schiffler. Starting point is a refinement of the classical tilting theory for mod H, replacing torsion pairs by torsion triples, thus putting it into the realm of the stability theory of King. The torsion pairs in mod H correspond nicely to the perpendicular pairs of exceptional subcategories…
We prove that there is a one to one correspondence between the following three sets: idempotent functions on a set of size $n$, complete exceptional sequences of linear radical square zero Nakayama algebras of rank $n$ and rooted labeled forests with $n$ nodes and height of at most one. Therefore, the number of exceptional sequences is given by the sum $\sum\limits^n_{j=1}\binom{n}{j}j^{n-j}$.
We consider Dynkin algebras, these are the hereditary artin algebras of finite representation type. The indecomposable modules for a Dynkin algebra correspond bijectively to the positive roots of a Dynkin diagram. Given a Dynkin algebra with n simple modules, a complete exceptional sequence is a sequence M_1,..., M_n of indecomposable modules such that Hom(M_i,M_j) = 0 = Ext(M_i,M_j) for i > j. The aim of this paper is to determine the number of complete exceptional sequences for any Dynkin algebra. There are direct connections between the representation theory of a Dynkin algebra A and the la…
We give a description of faces of all codimensions for the cones of weights of rings of semi-invariants of quivers. For a triple flag quiver and faces of codimension 1 this reduces to the result of Knutson-Tao-Woodward on the facets of the Klyachko cone. We give new applications to Littlewood-Richardson coefficients, including a product formula for LR-coefficients corresponding to triples of partitions lying on a wall of the Klyachko cone. We systematically review and develop the necessary methods (exceptional and Schur sequences, orthogonal categories, semi-stable decompositions, GIT quotient…
Let $Λ$ be a finite-dimensional algebra over a field $K$. We describe how Buan and Marsh's $τ$-exceptional sequences can be used to give a "brick labeling" of a certain poset of wide subcategories of finitely-generated $Λ$-modules. When $Λ$ is representation-directed, we prove that there exists a total order on the set of bricks which makes this into an EL-labeling. Motivated by the connection between classical exceptional sequences and noncrossing partitions, we then turn our attention towards the study of (well-separated) completely semidistributive lattices. Such lattices come equipped with…
We introduce the notions of $τ$-exceptional and signed $τ$-exceptional sequences for any finite dimensional algebra. We prove that for a fixed algebra of rank $n$, and for any positive integer $t \leq n$, there is a bijection between the set of signed $τ$-exceptional sequences of length $t$, and (basic) ordered support $τ$-rigid objects with $t$ indecomposable direct summands. If the algebra is hereditary, our notions coincide with exceptional and signed exceptional sequences. The latter were recently introduced by Igusa and Todorov, who constructed a similar bijection in the hereditary settin…
Exceptional sequences are fundamental to investigate the derived categories of finite dimensional algebras. The aim of this note is to classify all the complete exceptional sequences over the path algebra of a Dynkin quiver of type $A_n$ in terms of non-crossing spanning trees.
We introduce weak exceptional sequence of modules which can be viewed as another modification of the standard case, different than the works of Igusa-Todorov \cite{Igusa-Todorov} and Buan-Marsh \cite{Buan-Marsh}. For hereditary algebras it is equivalent to standard exceptional sequences. One important new feature is: if global dimension of algebra is greater than one, then the size of the full sequence can exceed the rank of the algebra. We use both cyclic and linear Nakayama algebras to test combinatorial aspects of this new sequence. For some particular classes we give closed form formulas w…
In this paper, using the correspondence of gentle algebras and dissections of marked surfaces, we study full exceptional sequences in the perfect derived category $\mathsf{K^b(A)}$ of a gentle algebra $\mathsf{A}$. We show that full exceptional sequences in $\mathsf{K^b(A)}$ exist if and only if the associated marked surface has no punctures and has at least two marked points on the boundary. Furthermore, by using induction on cuts of surfaces, we characterise when an exceptional sequence can be completed to a full exceptional sequence. If the genus of the associated surface is zero then we sh…
We establish some properties of $τ$-exceptional sequences for finite-dimensional algebras. In an earlier paper we established a bijection between the set of ordered support $τ$-tilting modules and the set of complete signed $τ$-exceptional sequences. We describe the action of the symmetric group on the latter induced by its natural action on the former. Similarly, we describe the effect on a $τ$-exceptional sequence obtained by mutating the corresponding ordered support $τ$-tilting module via a construction of Adachi-Iyama-Reiten.
The category of Cohen-Macaulay modules of an algebra $B_{k,n}$ is used [JKS16] to give an additive categorification of the cluster algebra structure on the homogeneous coordinate ring of the Grassmannian of $k$-planes in $n$-space. In this paper, we find canonical Auslander--Reiten sequences and study the Auslander--Reiten translation periodicity for this category. Furthermore, we give an explicit construction of Cohen-Macaulay modules of arbitrary rank. We then use our results to establish a correspondence between rigid indecomposable modules of rank 2 and real roots of degree 2 for the assoc…
We classify generalized tilting modules and full exceptional sequences for the family of quasi-hereditary quotients of type A zig-zag algebras and for a related family of algebras. We also give a characterization of these quotients as quasi-hereditary algebras with simple preserving duality that are 'close' to self-injective algebras.
We provide a classification of generalized tilting modules and full exceptional sequences for the dual extension algebra of the path algebra of a uniformly oriented linear quiver modulo the ideal generated by paths of length two with its opposite algebra. For the classification of generalized tilting modules we develop a combinatorial model for the poset of indecomposable self-orthogonal modules with standard filtration with respect to the relation arising from higher extensions.
We classify spherical modules and full exceptional sequences of modules over the Auslander algebra of $k[x]/(x^t)$. We categorify the left and right symmetric group actions on these exceptional sequences to two braid group actions: of spherical twists along simple modules, and of right mutations. In particular, every such exceptional sequence is obtained by spherical twists from a standard sequence, and likewise for right mutations.
We use combinatorics of quivers and the corresponding surfaces to study maximal green sequences of minimal length for quivers of type $\mathbb{A}$. We prove that such sequences have length $n+t$, where $n$ is the number of vertices and $t$ is the number of 3-cycles in the quiver. Moreover, we develop a procedure that yields these minimal length maximal green sequences.
We give a new and intrinsic proof of the transitivity of the braid group action on the set of full exceptional sequences of coherent sheaves on a weighted projective line. We do not use here the corresponding result of Crawley-Boevey for modules over hereditary algebras. As an application we prove that the strongest global dimension of the category of coherent sheaves on a weighted projective line $\XX$ does not depend on the parameters of $\XX$. Finally we prove that the determinant of the matrix obtained by taking the values of $n$ $\ZZ$-linear functions defined on the Grothendieck group $K_…
We introduce signed exceptional sequences as factorizations of morphisms in the cluster morphism category. The objects of this category are wide subcategories of the module category of a hereditary algebra. A morphism $[T]:\mathcal A\to \mathcal B$ is the equivalence class of a rigid object $T$ in the cluster category of $\mathcal A$ so that $\mathcal B$ is the right hom-ext perpendicular category of the underlying object $|T|\in \mathcal A$. Factorizations of a morphism $[T]$ are given by total orderings of the components of $T$. This is equivalent to a "signed exceptional sequence." For an a…
Let W be a finite crystallographic reflection group. The generalized Catalan number of W coincides both with the number of clusters in the cluster algebra associated to W, and with the number of noncrossing partitions for W. Natural bijections between these two sets are known. For any positive integer m, both m-clusters and m-noncrossing partitions have been defined, and the cardinality of both these sets is the Fuss-Catalan number. We give a natural bijection between these two sets by first establishing a bijection between two particular sets of exceptional sequences in the bounded derived ca…
Maximal green sequences are important objects in representation theory, cluster algebras, and string theory. It is an open problem to determine what lengths are achieved by the maximal green sequences of a quiver. We combine the combinatorics of surface triangulations and the basics of scattering diagrams to address this problem. Our main result is a formula for the length of minimal length maximal green sequences of quivers defined by triangulations of an annulus or a punctured disk.
We show that exceptional sequences for hereditary algebras are characterized by the fact that the product of the corresponding reflections is the inverse Coxeter element in the Weyl group. We use this result to give a new combinatorial characterization of clusters tilting sets in the cluster category in the case where the hereditary algebra is of finite type.
In an unpublished preprint, A. King conjectured that there are tilting bundles over projective varieties which are obtained as invariant quotients of affine spaces for linear actions of reductive groups. The goal of this paper is to give further examples of strong exceptional sequences of vector bundles on certain projective varieties. These are obtained as geometric invariant quotients of affine spaces by linear actions of reductive groups, as in King's conjecture.
Let $\A$ be a finitary hereditary abelian category and $D(\A)$ be its reduced Drinfeld double Hall algebra. By giving explicit formulas in $D(\A)$ for left and right mutations, we show that the subalgebras of $D(\A)$ generated by exceptional sequences are invariant under mutation equivalences. As an application, we obtain that if $\A$ is the category of finite dimensional modules over a finite dimensional hereditary algebra, or the category of coherent sheaves on a weighted projective line, the double composition algebra of $\A$ is generated by any complete exceptional sequence. Moreover, for …
Maximal green sequences were introduced as combinatorical counterpart for Donaldson-Thomas invariants for 2-acyclic quivers with potential by B. Keller. We take the categorical notion and introduce maximal green sequences for hearts of bounded t-structures of triangulated categories that can be tilted indefinitely. We study the case where the heart is the category of modules over the preprojective algebra of a quiver without loops. The combinatorical counterpart of maximal green sequences for Dynkin quivers are maximal chains in the Hasse quiver of basic support τ-tilting modules. We show that…
For $A$ a gentle algebra, and $X$ and $Y$ string modules, we construct a combinatorial basis for Hom($X,τY$). We use this to describe support $τ$-tilting modules for $A$. We give a combinatorial realization of maps in both directions realizing the bijection between support $τ$-tilting modules and functorially finite torsion classes. We give an explicit basis of Ext$^1(Y,X)$ as short exact sequences. We analyze several constructions given in a more restricted, combinatorial setting by McConville, showing that many but not all of them can be extended to general gentle algebras.
Let $k$ be a field and consider the path algebra $kQ$ of the quiver $Q$. A pair of indecomposable $kQ$-modules $(Y,X)$ is called an orthogonal exceptional pair if the modules are exceptional and $\operatorname{Hom}(X,Y)=\operatorname{Hom}(Y,X)=\operatorname{Ext}^{1}(X,Y)=0$. Denote by $\mathcal{F}(X,Y)$ the full subcategory of objects having filtration with factors $X$ and $Y$. By the theorem of Schofield if $Z$ is exceptional but not simple, then $Z\in\mathcal{F}(X,Y)$ for some orthogonal exceptional pair $(Y,X)$, and $Z$ is not a simple object in $\mathcal{F}(X,Y)$. In fact, there are precis…
We show that ''almost all'' exceptional modules over wild canonical algebra $Λ$ can be described by matrices having coefficients $λ_i-λ_j$, where $λ_i, λ_j$ are elements from the parameter sequence. The proof is based on Schofield induction for sheaves in the associated categories of weighted projective lines and an extended version of C. M. Ringel's proof for the $''0, \,1''$ matrix property for exceptional representations for finite acyclic quivers.
In the appendix of the famous book "Commutative Algebra with a View Towards Algebraic Geometry" one can find an infinite family of complexes indexed by integers. This family includes Eagon-Northcott and Buschsbaum-Rim complexes. The objective of this paper is to study this family, and, in particular, refine the knowledge of its cohomology. First, we obtain these complexes from the derived images of twists of the Koszul complex on the projective space. This idea apparently goes back to Kempf [1970]. Taking this "geometric" point of view, we interpret the cohomology of these complexes as the coh…
Hille and Perling associate to every cyclic full strongly exceptional sequence of line bundles on a toric weak Fano surface a toric system, which defines a new toric surface. In this note we interprete this construction as an instance of mirror symmetry and extend it to a duality on the set toric weak Fano surfaces equiped with a cyclic full strongly exceptional sequence.
Starting from the Jordan algebraic interpretation of the "Magic Star" embedding within the exceptional sequence of simple Lie algebras, we exploit the so-called spin factor embedding of rank-3 Jordan algebras and its consequences on the Jordan algebraic Lie symmetries, in order to provide another perspective on the origin of the "Exceptional Periodicity" (EP) and its "Magic Star" structure. We also highlight some properties of the special class of Vinberg's rank-3 (dubbed exceptional) T-algebras, appearing on the tips of the "Magic Star" projection of EP(-generalized, finite-dimensional, excep…
