This work investigates the influence of low temperature and broadened Landau levels on the thermodynamic properties of two-dimensional electron systems. The interplay between these two physical parameters on the magnetic field dependence of the chemical potential, the specific heat and the magnetization is calculated. In the absence of a complete theory that explains the Landau level broadening, experimental and theoretical studies in literature perform different model calculations of this parameter. Here it is presented that different broadening parameters of Gaussian-shaped Landau levels cause width variations in their contributions to interlevel and intralevel excitations. Below a characteristic temperature, the interlevel excitations become negligible. Likewise, at this temperature range, the effect of the Landau level broadening vanishes.
Broadening of the Landau levels in graphene and the associated quantum Hall plateau-to-plateau transition are investigated numerically. For correlated bond disorder, the graphene-specific n=0 Landau level of the Dirac fermions becomes anomalously sharp accompanied by the Hall transition exhibiting a fixed-point-like criticality. Similarly anomalous behavior for the n=0 Landau level is also shown to occur in correlated random magnetic fields, which suggests that the anomaly is generic to disorders that preserve the chiral symmetry.
We study the density of states and localization properties of the lowest Landau levels of graphene at high magnetic fields. We focus on the effects caused by correlated long-range hopping disorder, which, in exfoliated graphene, is induced by static ripples. We find that the broadening of the lowest Landau level shrinks exponentially with increasing disorder correlation length. At the same time, the broadening grows linearly with magnetic field and with disorder amplitudes. The lowest Landau level peak shows a robust splitting, whose origin we identify as the breaking of the sublattice (valley…
I review some aspects of an alternative model of the quantum Hall effect, which is not based on the presence of disorder potentials. Instead, a quantization of the electronic drift current in the presence of crossed electric and magnetic fields is employed to construct a non-linear transport theory. Another important ingredient of the alternative theory is the coupling of the two-dimensional electron gas to the leads and the applied voltages. By working in a picture, where the external voltages fix the chemical potential in the 2D subsystem, the experimentally observed linear relation between …
We describe a technique which allows a direct measurement of the relative Fermi energy in an electron system using a double layer structure, where graphene is one of the two layers. We illustrate this method by probing the Fermi energy as a function of density in a graphene monolayer, at zero and in high magnetic fields. This technique allows us to determine the Fermi velocity, Landau level spacing, and Landau level broadening in graphene. We find that the N=0 Landau level broadening is larger by comparison to the broadening of upper and lower Landau levels.
Using the path-integral approach developed by Brézin et al. [ Nucl.Phys.B235, 24 (1984) ], we obtain an analytical expression for the density of states of a spin-1/2 disordered two-dimensional electron gas in a strong, perpendicular magnetic field. The density of states of this system illustrates the interplay between the Zeeman splitting of Landau levels and the disorder-induced broadening. We find that the broadening and the band splitting of the Landau bands are enhanced due to the level repulsion from the mixing of two spin orientations caused by the random scatterings. The comparison betw…
The spectrum of electromagnetic collective excitations in Dirac semimetals placed in a quantizing magnetic field is considered. We have found the Landau damping regions using the energy and momentum conservation law for allowed transitions between one-particle states of electron excitations. Analysis of dispersion equations for longitudinal and transverse waves near the window boundaries in the Landau damping regions reveals different types of collective excitations. We also indicate the features of universal broadening of cyclotron absorption for a magnetic field variation in systems with lin…
We report a reliable method to estimate the disorder broadening parameter from the scaling of the gaps of the even and major odd denominator fractional quantum Hall states of the second Landau level. We apply this technique to several samples of vastly different densities and grown in different MBE chambers. Excellent agreement is found between the estimated intrinsic and numerically obtained energy gaps for the $ν=5/2$ fractional quantum Hall state. Futhermore, we quantify, for the first time, the dependence of the intrinsic gap at $ν=5/2$ on Landau level mixing.
Adsorbates can drastically alter physical properties of graphene. Particularly important are adatoms and admolecules that induce resonances at the Dirac point. Such resonances limit electron mobilities and spin relaxation times. We present a systematic tight-binding as well as analytical modeling to investigate the properties of resonant states in the presence of a quantizing magnetic field. Landau levels are strongly influenced by the resonances, especially close to the Dirac point. Here the cyclotron motion of electrons around a defect leads to the formation of circulating local currents whi…
We study Landau-Zener dynamics in a double quantum dot filled with two electrons, where the spin states can become correlated with charge states and the level velocity can be tuned in a time-dependent fashion. We show that a correct interpretation of experimental data is only possible when finite-time effects are taken into account. In addition, our formalism allows the study of partial adiabatic dynamics in the presence of phonon-mediated hyperfine relaxation and charge-noise-induced dephasing. Our findings demonstrate that charge noise severely impacts the visibility of Landau-Zener-Stückelb…
Landau level broadening mechanisms in electrically neutral and quasineutral graphene were investigated through micro-magneto-Raman experiments in three different samples, namely, a natural single-layer graphene flake and a back-gated single-layer device, both deposited over Si/SiO2 substrates, and a multilayer epitaxial graphene employed as a reference sample. Interband Landau level transition widths were estimated through a quantitative analysis of the magnetophonon resonances associated with optically active Landau level transitions crossing the energy of the E_2g Raman-active phonon. Contra…
The effect of a weak electrical modulation on spin Hall resonance is presented here. In presence of the magnetic field normal to the plane of the motion of electron, the Landau levels are formed which get broadened due to the weak modulation. The width of the Landau levels broadening are periodic with the inverse magnetic field. There is a certain magnetic field for which the crossing of Landau levels between spin-up and spin-down branches takes place. This gives rise to the resonance in the spin Hall conductivity (SHC). The Landau levels broadening or the energy correction due to the modulati…
For a Landau-Zener transition in a two-level system, the probability for a particle, initially in the first level, to survive the transition and to remain in the first level, does not depend on whether or not the second level is broadened [V. M. Akulin and W. P. Schleicht, Phys. Rev. A {\bf 46}, 4110 (1992)]. In other words, the seminal Landau-Zener result applies regardless of the broadening of the second level. The same question for the multistate Landau-Zener transition is addressed in the present paper. While for integrable multistate models, where the transition does not involve interfere…
We examine the interplay between size quantization and Landau quantization in the De Haas-Van Alphen oscillations of clean, metallic nanowires in a longitudinal magnetic field for `hard' boundary conditions, i.e. those of an infinite round well, as opposed to the `soft' parabolically confined boundary conditions previously treated in Alexandrov and Kabanov (Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 95}, 076601 (2005) (AK)). We find that there exist {\em two} fundamental frequencies as opposed to the one found in bulk systems and the three frequencies found by AK with soft boundary counditions. In addition, we fin…
In the presence of spin-orbit coupling two branches of the energy spectrum of 2D electrons get shifted in the momentum space. Application of in-plane magnetic field causes the splitting of the branches in energy. When both, spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman splitting are present, the branches of energy spectrum cross at certain energy. Near this energy, the Landau quantization becomes peculiar since semiclassical trajectories, corresponding to individual branches, get coupled. We study this coupling as a function of proximity to the topological transition. Remarkably, the dependence on the proxim…
We calculate the local density of states of a two-dimensional electron system under strong crossed magnetic and electric fields. We assume a strong perpendicular magnetic field which, in the absence of in-plane electric fields and collision broadening effects, leads to Landau quantization and the well-known singular Landau density of states. Unidirectional in-plane electric fields lead to a broadening of the delta-function-singularities of the Landau density of states. This results in position-dependent peaks of finite height and width, which can be expressed in terms of the energy eigenfuncti…
We present high field magneto-transport data from a range of 30nm wide InSb/InAlSb quantum wells. The low temperature carrier mobility of the samples studied ranged from 18.4 to 39.5 m2V-1s-1 with carrier densities between 1.5x1015 and 3.28x1015 m-2. Room temperature mobilities are reported in excess of 6 m2V-1s-1. It is found that the Landau level broadening decreases with carrier density and beating patterns are observed in the magnetoresistance with non-zero node amplitudes in samples with the narrowest broadening despite the presence of a large g-factor. The beating is attributed to Rashba…
We study the dissipative and Hall viscosity of a disordered noninteracting 2D electrons, both analytically and numerically. Analytically, we employ the self-consistent Born approximation, explicitly taking into account the modification of the single-particle density of states and the elastic transport time due to the Landau quantization. The reported results interpolate smoothly between the limiting cases of weak (strong) magnetic field and strong (weak) disorder. In the regime of weak magnetic field, our results describes the quantum (de Haas-van Alphen type) oscillations of the dissipative a…
The energy-dependence of the electronic scattering time is probed by Landau level spectroscopy in quasi neutral multilayer epitaxial graphene. From the Landau levels broadening we find that the scattering rate increases linearly with energy. This implies a surprising property of the Landau level spectrum in graphene - the number of the resolved Landau levels remains constant with the applied magnetic field. Insights are given about possible scattering mechanism and carrier mobilities in the graphene system investigated.
A two-dimensional electron gas exposed to a tilted magnetic field is considered with the Rashba spin-orbit interaction and the Zeeman effect. An exact solution for the eigenvalues were obtained assuming that two opposite spin states of adjacent Landau levels have equal probability. No crossings between adjacent eigenenergies were observed unlike in the perpendicular-magnetic-field case. The absence of crossings lead to quenched beating structures in the oscillations of the density of states (DOS). Persistent spin-splittings were observed at the weak magnetic field region. The splittings, howev…
We report capacitors in which a finite electronic compressibility of graphene dominates the electrostatics, resulting in pronounced changes in capacitance as a function of magnetic field and carrier concentration. The capacitance measurements have allowed us to accurately map the density of states D, and compare it against theoretical predictions. Landau oscillations in D are robust and zero Landau level (LL) can easily be seen at room temperature in moderate fields. The broadening of LLs is strongly affected by charge inhomogeneity that leads to zero LL being broader than other levels.
Collective modes of exotic quantum fluids reveal underlying physical mechanisms responsible for emergent complex quantum ground states. We observe unexpected new collective modes in the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) regime: intra-Landau-level plasmons in the second Landau level measured by resonant inelastic light scattering. The plasmons herald rotational-symmetry-breaking phases in tilted magnetic fields and reveal long-range translational invariance in these phases. The fascinating dependence of plasmon features on filling factor provide new insights on interplays between topological quantu…
We present activation gap measurements of the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) in the second Landau level. Signatures for 14 (5) distinct incompressible FQHE states are seen in a high (low) mobility sample with the enigmatic 5/2 even denominator FQHE having a large activation gap of $\sim$600 ($\sim$300mK) in the high (low) mobility sample. Our measured large relative gaps for 5/2, 7/3, and 8/3 FQHE indicate emergence of exotic FQHE correlations in the second Ladau level, possibly quite different from the well-known lowest Landau level Laughlin correlations. Our measured 5/2 gap is found …
The specific heat capacity of a two-dimensional electron gas is derived for two types of the density of states, namely, the Dirac delta function spectrum and that based on a Gaussian function. For the first time, a closed form expression of the specific heat for each case is obtained at half-filling. When the chemical potential is temperature-independent, the temperature is calculated at which the specific heat is a maximum. Here the effects of the broadening of the Landau levels are distinguished from those of the different filling factors. In general, the results derived herein hold for any …
By restricting the motion of high-mobility 2D electron gas to a network of channels with smooth confinement, we were able to trace, both classically and quantum-mechanically, the interplay of backscattering, and of the bending action of a weak magnetic field. Backscattering limits the mobility, while bending initiates quantization of the Hall conductivity. We demonstrate that, in restricted geometry, electron motion reduces to two Chalker-Coddington networks, with opposite directions of propagation along the links, which are weakly coupled by disorder. Interplay of backscattering and bending r…
We study the interplay between a Kekulé patterned distortion in monolayer graphene and a monochromatic laser irradiation, focusing in the long wavelength approximation of its Landau level structure. Exploiting the symmetries of the system, we calculate in the static regime an exact analytical solution for the energy spectrum and its eigenstates, which in turn allows us to find close expressions for the polarizations in the valley and pseudospin degrees of freedom. We find that due to the valley-momentum coupling, the valley polarization exhibits a distinct magnetic response for the two $K$-val…
We propose a novel method to manipulate the state of a single electron spin in a semiconductor quantum dot (QD). The manipulation is achieved by tunnel coupling a QD, labeled $L$, and occupied with an electron to an adjacent QD, labeled $R$, which is not occupied by an electron but having an energy linearly varying in time. We identify a parameter regime in which a complete population transfer between the spin eigenstates $|L\uparrow\rangle$ and $|L\downarrow\rangle$ is achieved without occupying the adjacent QD. This method is convenient due to the fact that manipulation can be done electrica…
Considering the quantum dynamics of 2DEG exposed to both a stationary magnetic field and an intense high-frequency electromagnetic wave, we found that the wave decreases the scattering-induced broadening of Landau levels. Therefore, various magnetoelectronic properties of two-dimensional nanostructures (density of electronic states at Landau levels, magnetotransport, etc) are sensitive to the irradiation by light. Thus, the elaborated theory paves a way to optical controlling magnetic properties of 2DEG.
2D Fermi liquid driven by uniform alternating electric field at zero temperature may remain in quantum coherent non-equilibrium state. We develop a quasistatic approximation for strong and slow ac-fields and solve the problem of driven disordered 2D electron gas in high non-overlapping Landau levels. The broadening of Landau level has the Lorentz form and is inversely proportional to the amplitude of the ac-field. In the absence of electron-phonon interaction the electron distribution function is constant within the last Landau level and the diagonal dc-conductivity is zero. For weak electron-…
Dynamical Hall conductivity σ_H(ω) of a 2D electron gas with impurities in the perpendicular magnetic field is analyzed. Plateau-like behavior at low frequencies as well as at high frequencies provided the complete filling of Landau levels is predicted. The broadening of a Landau level separates two frequency regions with different behaviour. Imaginary part of dynamical Hall conductivity reveals oscillations in the localized states region. Comparison with the experiment is carried out.
Precise infrared magnetotransmission experiments have been performed in magnetic fields up to 32 T on a series of multilayer epitaxial graphene samples. We observe changes in the spectral features and broadening of the main cyclotron transition when the incoming photon energy is in resonance with the lowest Landau level separation and the energy of a K point optical phonon. We have developed a theory that explains and quantitatively reproduces the frequency and magnetic field dependence of the phenomenon as the absorption of a photon together with the simultaneous creation of an intervalley, i…
A spatially oscillating pair potential $Δ(r)=Δ_0 e^{2i K\cdot r}$ with momentum $K>Δ_0/\hbar v$ drives a deconfinement transition of the Majorana bound states in the vortex cores of a Fu-Kane heterostructure (a 3D topological insulator with Fermi velocity $v$, on a superconducting substrate with gap $Δ_0$, in a perpendicular magnetic field). In the deconfined phase at zero chemical potential the Majorana fermions form a dispersionless Landau level, protected by chiral symmetry against broadening due to vortex scattering. The coherent superposition of electrons and holes in the Majorana Landau …
We present a theoretical description of the interlayer magnetoresistance in the layered Dirac fermion system with the application to the organic conductor α-(BEDT-TTF)_2I_3 under pressure. Assuming a non-vertical interlayer tunneling and including higher Landau level effects we calculate the interlayer conductivity using the Kubo formula. We propose a physical picture of the experimentally observed crossover from the negative interlayer magnetoresistance, where the Dirac fermion zero-energy Landau level plays a central role, to the positive interlayer magnetoresistance that is the consequence o…
We predict the general feasibility and demonstrate the specific design of the THz laser operating between Landau levels in graphene placed on a polar substrate in a magnetic field of order 1 T. Steady state operation under a continuous wave optical pumping is possible due to an interplay between Auger and surface-phonon mediated relaxation of carriers. The scheme is scalable to other materials with massless Dirac fermions, for example surface states in 3D topological insulators such as Bi$_2$Se$_3$ or Bi$_2$Te$_3$.
Theoretical Raman line shape functions have been studied to take care of quantum confinement effect and Fano effect individually and jointly. The characteristics of various Raman line shapes have been studied in terms of the broadening and asymmetry of Raman line shapes. It is shown that the asymmetry in the Raman line-shape function caused by these two effects individually does not add linearly to give asymmetry of line-shape generated by considering the combined effect. This indicates existence of interplay between the two effects. The origin of interplay lies in the fact that Fano effect it…
The complex nature of filling factor $ν$=0 of monolayer graphene is studied in magnetotransport experiments. As function of perpendicular magnetic field a metal-insulator transition is observed, which is attributed to disorder-induced Landau level broadening in the canted antiferromagnetic phase. In the metallic regime a separation of the zeroth Landau level appears and signs of the quantum spin Hall effect are seen near $ν$=0. In addition to local transport, nonlocal transport experiments show results being consistent with helical edge transport.
We employ the Landau-Lifshitz-Bloch (LLB) equation to investigate current-induced domain wall motion at finite temperatures by numerical micromagnetic simulations. We extend the LLB equation with spin torque terms that account for the effect of spin-polarized currents and we find that the velocities depend strongly on the interplay between adiabatic and non-adiabatic spin torque terms. As a function of temperature, we find non-monotonous behavior, which might be useful to determine the relative strengths of the spin torque terms experimentally.
We report the observation of novel magnetoresistance oscillations induced by the resonant inter-subband absorption in nondegenerate 2D electrons bound to the surface of liquid helium. The oscillations are periodic in 1/B and originate from the scattering-mediated transitions of the excited electrons into the Landau states of the first subband. The structure of the oscillations is affected by the collision broadening of the Landau levels and by many-electron effects.
We consider the interplay between the antiferromagnetic and Kekulé valence bond solid orderings in the zero energy Landau levels of neutral monolayer and bilayer graphene. We establish the presence of Wess-Zumino-Witten terms between these orders: this implies that their quantum fluctuations are described by the deconfined critical theories of quantum spin systems. We present implications for experiments, including the possible presence of excitonic superfluidity in bilayer graphene.
We study the Haldane model under strain using a tight-binding approach, and compare the obtained results with the continuum-limit approximation. As in graphene, nonuniform strain leads to a time-reversal preserving pseudo-magnetic field that induces (pseudo) Landau levels. Unlike a real magnetic field, strain lifts the degeneracy of the zeroth pseudo Landau levels at different valleys. Moreover, for the zigzag edge under uniaxial strain, strain removes the degeneracy within the pseudo-Landau levels by inducing a tilt in their energy dispersion. The latter arises from next-to-leading order corr…
We have studied the interplay of an Anderson impurity in Landau quantized graphene, with special emphasis on the influence of the chemical potential. Within the slave-boson mean-field theory, we found reentrant Kondo behaviour by varying the chemical potential or gate voltage. Between Landau levels, the density of states is suppressed, and by changing the graphene's Fermi energy, we cross from metallic to semiconducting regions. Hence, the corresponding Kondo behaviour is also influenced. The f-level spectral function reveals both the presence of Landau levels in the conduction band and the Ko…
In high-mobility two-dimensional electron gases Landau levels are already formed at very small magnetic field values. Such two-dimensional electron gases show a huge negative magnetoresistance at low temperatures and an unexpected and very strong non-linear behavior with the applied current. This non-linearity depends on carrier concentration and is explained by the subtle interplay of elastic scattering within Landau levels and in between Landau levels.
Quantum phases of electrons in the filling factor range $2 \leqν\leq 3$ are probed by the weak optical emission from the partially populated second Landau level and spin wave measurements. Observations of optical emission include a multiplet of sharp peaks that exhibit a strong filling factor dependence. Spin wave measurements by resonant inelastic light scattering probe breaking of spin rotational invariance and are used to link this optical emission with collective phases of electrons. A remarkably rapid interplay between emission peak intensities manifests phase competition in the second La…
Many-body effects resulting from strong electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions play a significant role in graphene physics. We report on their manifestation in low B field magneto-phonon resonances in high quality exfoliated single-layer and bilayer graphene encapsulated in hexagonal boron nitride. These resonances allow us to extract characteristic effective Fermi velocities, as high as $1.20 \times 10^6$ m/s, for the observed "dressed" Landau level transitions, as well as the broadening of the resonances, which increases with Landau level index.
Motivated by recent experiments, and using the rotating-and-vibrating electron-molecule (RVEM) theory [Yannouleas and Landman, Phys. Rev. B 66, 115315 (2002); Phys. Rev. A 81, 023609 (2010)], in conjunction with exact diagonalization, we develop a unified microscopic approach for the interplay between liquid fractional-quantum-Hall-effect (FQHE) states and Wigner-solid states in the lowest Landau level (LLL) in the neighborhood of nu=1/3. Liquid characteristics of the FQHE states are associated with the symmetry-conserving rotations and vibrations of the electron molecule. Although the electro…
While it has been well-known that the chirality is an important symmetry for Dirac-fermion systems that gives rise to the zero-mode Landau level in graphene, here we explore whether this notion can be extended to tilted Dirac cones as encountered in organic metals. We have found that there exists a "generalized chiral symmetry" that encompasses the tilted Dirac cones, where a generalized chiral operator $γ$, satisfying $γ^{\dagger} H + Hγ=0$ for the Hamiltonian $H$, protects the zero mode. We can use this to show that the $n=0$ Landau level is delta-function-like (with no broadening) by extend…
We show that the interplay of cyclotron motion and Andreev reflection experienced by massless-Dirac-like charge carriers in topological-insulator surface states generates a Majorana-particle excitation. Based on an envelope-function description of the Dirac-Andreev edge states, we discuss the kinematic properties of the Majorana mode and find them to be possible to be tuned by changing the superconductor's chemical potential and/or the magnitude of the perpendicular magnetic field. Our proposal opens up new possibilities for studying Majorana fermions in a controllable setup.
The electronic structure of Bernal-stacked graphite subject to tilted magnetic fields has been investigated using infrared magneto-transmission experiments. With the increasing in-plane component of the magnetic field B, we observe significant broadening and partially also splitting of interband inter-Landau level transitions, which originate at the H point of the graphite Brillouin zone, where the charge carriers behave as massless Dirac fermions. The observed behavior is attributed to the lifting of the twofold degeneracy of Landau levels at the H point - a degeneracy which in graphite compl…
We develop a systematic theory of microwave-induced oscillations in the magnetoresistivity of a two-dimensional electron gas, focusing on the regime of strongly overlapping Landau levels. At linear order in microwave power, two novel mechanisms of the oscillations (``quadrupole'' and ``photovoltaic'') are identified, in addition to those studied before (``displacement'' and ``inelastic''). The quadrupole and photovoltaic mechanisms are shown to be the only ones that give rise to oscillations in the nondiagonal part of the photoconductivity tensor. In the diagonal part, the inelastic contributi…
We study two-dimensional interacting electrons in a weak perpendicular magnetic field with the filling factor $ν\gg 1$ and in the presence of a quenched disorder. In the framework of the Hartree-Fock approximation, we obtain the mean-field phase diagram for the partially filled highest Landau level. We find that the CDW state can exist if the Landau level broadening $1/2τ$ does not exceed the critical value $1/2τ_{c}=0.038ω_{H}$. Our analysis of weak crystallization corrections to the mean-field results shows that these corrections are of the order of $(1/ν)^{2/3}\ll 1$ and therefore can be ne…
Intra Landau level thermal activation, from localized states in the tail, to delocalized states above the mobility edge in the same Landau level, explains the $B_c(T)$ (half width of the dissipationless state) phase diagram for a number of different quantum Hall samples with widely ranging carrier density, mobility and disorder. Good agreement is achieved over $2-3$ orders of magnitude in temperature and magnetic field for a wide range of filling factors. The Landau level width is found to be independent of magnetic field. The mobility edge moves, in the case of changing Landau level overlap t…
We investigate the quantum effects, in particular the Landau-level quantization, in the scattering of a particle the nonadiabatic classical dynamics of which is governed by an adiabatic invariant. As a relevant example, we study the scattering of a drifting particle on a magnetic barrier in the quantum limit where the cyclotron energy is much larger than a broadening of the Landau levels induced by the nonadiabatic transitions. We find that, despite the level quantization, the exponential suppression $\exp(-2πd/δ)$ (barrier width $d$, orbital shift per cyclotron revolution $δ$) of the root-mea…
