The interplay between a magnetic field and the Coulomb potential from a charged vacancy on the electron states in graphene is investigated within the tight-binding model. The Coulomb potential removes locally Landau level degeneracy, while the vacancy introduces a satellite level next to the normal Landau level. These satellite levels are found throughout the positive energy region, but in the negative energy region they turn into atomic collapse resonances. Crossings between Landau levels with different angular quantum number $m$ are found. Unlike the point impurity system in which an anticrossing occurs between Landau levels of the same $m$, in this work anticrossing is found between the normal Landau level and the vacancy induced level. The atomic collapse resonance hybridize with the Landau levels. The charge at which the lowest Landau level $m = -1, N = 1$ crosses increases $E = 0$ with enhancing magnetic field. Landau level scaling anomaly occurs when the charge is larger than the critical charge $β\approx0.6$ and this critical charge is independent of the magnetic field.
We describe the effects of vacancies on the electronic properties of a graphene sheet in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field: from a single defect to an organized vacancy lattice. An isolated vacancy is the minimal possible inner edge, showing an antidotlike behaviour, which results in an extra level between consecutive Landau levels. Two close vacancies may couple to each other, forming a vacancy molecule tuned by the magnetic field. We show that a vacancy lattice introduce an extra band in between Landau levels with localization properties that could lead to extra Hall resistance …
We investigate the electronic properties of semi-metallic (12,0) carbon nanotubes in the presence of a variety of mono-, di- and hexa-vacancy defects, by using first principle DFT combined with non-equilibrium Green's function technique. We show that defect states related to the vacancies hybridize with the extended states of the nanotubes to modify the band edge, and change the energy gap, resulting from the curvature effect. As a consequence, the nanotube conductance is not a monotonic function of the defect size and geometry. Paradoxically, hexa-vacancy nanotubes have higher conductance tha…
Adsorbates can drastically alter physical properties of graphene. Particularly important are adatoms and admolecules that induce resonances at the Dirac point. Such resonances limit electron mobilities and spin relaxation times. We present a systematic tight-binding as well as analytical modeling to investigate the properties of resonant states in the presence of a quantizing magnetic field. Landau levels are strongly influenced by the resonances, especially close to the Dirac point. Here the cyclotron motion of electrons around a defect leads to the formation of circulating local currents whi…
This work investigates the influence of low temperature and broadened Landau levels on the thermodynamic properties of two-dimensional electron systems. The interplay between these two physical parameters on the magnetic field dependence of the chemical potential, the specific heat and the magnetization is calculated. In the absence of a complete theory that explains the Landau level broadening, experimental and theoretical studies in literature perform different model calculations of this parameter. Here it is presented that different broadening parameters of Gaussian-shaped Landau levels cau…
We examine the interplay between size quantization and Landau quantization in the De Haas-Van Alphen oscillations of clean, metallic nanowires in a longitudinal magnetic field for `hard' boundary conditions, i.e. those of an infinite round well, as opposed to the `soft' parabolically confined boundary conditions previously treated in Alexandrov and Kabanov (Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 95}, 076601 (2005) (AK)). We find that there exist {\em two} fundamental frequencies as opposed to the one found in bulk systems and the three frequencies found by AK with soft boundary counditions. In addition, we fin…
In the presence of spin-orbit coupling two branches of the energy spectrum of 2D electrons get shifted in the momentum space. Application of in-plane magnetic field causes the splitting of the branches in energy. When both, spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman splitting are present, the branches of energy spectrum cross at certain energy. Near this energy, the Landau quantization becomes peculiar since semiclassical trajectories, corresponding to individual branches, get coupled. We study this coupling as a function of proximity to the topological transition. Remarkably, the dependence on the proxim…
The influence of local magnetic moment formation around three kinds of vacancies on the electron conduction through metallic single-wall carbon nanotubes is studied by use of the Landauer formalism within the coherent regime. The method is based on the single-band tight-binding Hamiltonian, a surface Green's function calculation, and the mean-field Hubbard model. The numerical results show that the electronic transport is spin-polarized due to the localized magnetic moments and it is strongly dependent on the geometry of the vacancies. For all kinds of vacancies, by including the effects of lo…
We study Landau-Zener dynamics in a double quantum dot filled with two electrons, where the spin states can become correlated with charge states and the level velocity can be tuned in a time-dependent fashion. We show that a correct interpretation of experimental data is only possible when finite-time effects are taken into account. In addition, our formalism allows the study of partial adiabatic dynamics in the presence of phonon-mediated hyperfine relaxation and charge-noise-induced dephasing. Our findings demonstrate that charge noise severely impacts the visibility of Landau-Zener-Stückelb…
Collective modes of exotic quantum fluids reveal underlying physical mechanisms responsible for emergent complex quantum ground states. We observe unexpected new collective modes in the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) regime: intra-Landau-level plasmons in the second Landau level measured by resonant inelastic light scattering. The plasmons herald rotational-symmetry-breaking phases in tilted magnetic fields and reveal long-range translational invariance in these phases. The fascinating dependence of plasmon features on filling factor provide new insights on interplays between topological quantu…
By restricting the motion of high-mobility 2D electron gas to a network of channels with smooth confinement, we were able to trace, both classically and quantum-mechanically, the interplay of backscattering, and of the bending action of a weak magnetic field. Backscattering limits the mobility, while bending initiates quantization of the Hall conductivity. We demonstrate that, in restricted geometry, electron motion reduces to two Chalker-Coddington networks, with opposite directions of propagation along the links, which are weakly coupled by disorder. Interplay of backscattering and bending r…
We study the interplay between a Kekulé patterned distortion in monolayer graphene and a monochromatic laser irradiation, focusing in the long wavelength approximation of its Landau level structure. Exploiting the symmetries of the system, we calculate in the static regime an exact analytical solution for the energy spectrum and its eigenstates, which in turn allows us to find close expressions for the polarizations in the valley and pseudospin degrees of freedom. We find that due to the valley-momentum coupling, the valley polarization exhibits a distinct magnetic response for the two $K$-val…
The remarkable electronic properties of graphene have fueled the vision of a graphene-based platform for lighter, faster and smarter electronics and computing applications. One of the challenges is to devise ways to tailor its electronic properties and to control its charge carriers. Here we show that a single atom vacancy in graphene can stably host a local charge and that this charge can be gradually built up by applying voltage pulses with the tip of a scanning tunneling microscope (STM). The response of the conduction electrons in graphene to the local charge is monitored with scanning tun…
Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond have attracted considerable interest in sensing of weak magnetic fields, such as those created by biological systems. Detecting such feeble signals requires near-surface NV centers, to reduce the distance between NVs and sources. Moreover, dense ensembles of NVs are highly desirable to reduce measurement time. However, robust charge state switching is often observed in these systems, resulting in a complex interplay between charge and spin dynamics that can reduce the attainable level of spin polarization, and consequently, sensitivity. Understanding th…
Under resonant conditions, a long sequence of landau-zener transitions can lead to Rabi oscillations. Using a nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center spin in diamond, we investigated the interference between more than 100 Landau-Zener processes. We observed the new type of Rabi oscillations of the electron spin resulting from the interference between successive Landau-Zener processes in various regimes, including both slow and fast passages. The combination of the control techniques and the favorable coherent properties of NV centers provides an excellent experimental platform to study a variety of quant…
We studied the spin depolarization of ensembles of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in nitrogen-rich single crystal diamonds. We found a strong dependence of the evolution of the polarized state in the dark on the concentration of NV centers. At low excitation power, we observed a simple exponential decay profile in the low-density regime and a paradoxical inverted exponential profile in the high-density regime. At higher excitation power, we observed complex behavior, with an initial sharp rise in luminescence signal after the preparation pulse followed by a slower exponential decay. Magnetic fi…
Motivated by recent scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy experiments on probing single vacancies in black phosphorus, we present a theory for Fano antiresonances induced by coupling between vacancy states and edge states of zigzag phosphorene nanoribbons (zPNRs). To this end, in the first step, using the tight-binding Hamiltonian, we obtain an analytic solution on the lattice for the state associated to a single vacancy located in the bulk phosphorene which shows a highly anisotropic localization in real space. For a finite zigzag ribbon, in the absence of particle-hole symmetry, the loc…
We predict the general feasibility and demonstrate the specific design of the THz laser operating between Landau levels in graphene placed on a polar substrate in a magnetic field of order 1 T. Steady state operation under a continuous wave optical pumping is possible due to an interplay between Auger and surface-phonon mediated relaxation of carriers. The scheme is scalable to other materials with massless Dirac fermions, for example surface states in 3D topological insulators such as Bi$_2$Se$_3$ or Bi$_2$Te$_3$.
We study the Haldane model under strain using a tight-binding approach, and compare the obtained results with the continuum-limit approximation. As in graphene, nonuniform strain leads to a time-reversal preserving pseudo-magnetic field that induces (pseudo) Landau levels. Unlike a real magnetic field, strain lifts the degeneracy of the zeroth pseudo Landau levels at different valleys. Moreover, for the zigzag edge under uniaxial strain, strain removes the degeneracy within the pseudo-Landau levels by inducing a tilt in their energy dispersion. The latter arises from next-to-leading order corr…
In high-mobility two-dimensional electron gases Landau levels are already formed at very small magnetic field values. Such two-dimensional electron gases show a huge negative magnetoresistance at low temperatures and an unexpected and very strong non-linear behavior with the applied current. This non-linearity depends on carrier concentration and is explained by the subtle interplay of elastic scattering within Landau levels and in between Landau levels.
Quantum phases of electrons in the filling factor range $2 \leqν\leq 3$ are probed by the weak optical emission from the partially populated second Landau level and spin wave measurements. Observations of optical emission include a multiplet of sharp peaks that exhibit a strong filling factor dependence. Spin wave measurements by resonant inelastic light scattering probe breaking of spin rotational invariance and are used to link this optical emission with collective phases of electrons. A remarkably rapid interplay between emission peak intensities manifests phase competition in the second La…
Recent experiments have shown that Landau-Majorana-Stuckelberg-Zener (LMSZ) interferometry is a powerful tool for demonstrating and exploiting quantum coherence not only in atomic systems but also in a variety of solid state quantum systems such as spins in quantum dots, superconducting qubits, and nitrogen vacancy centers in diamond. In this work, we propose and develop a general (and, in principle, exact) theoretical formalism to identify and characterize the interference resonances that are the hallmark of LMSZ interferometry. Unlike earlier approaches, our scheme does not require any appr…
Characterizing the local internal environment surrounding solid-state spin defects is crucial to harnessing them as nanoscale sensors of external fields. This is especially germane to the case of defect ensembles which can exhibit a complex interplay between interactions, internal fields and lattice strain. Working with the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond, we demonstrate that local electric fields dominate the magnetic resonance behavior of NV ensembles at low magnetic field. We introduce a simple microscopic model that quantitatively captures the observed spectra for samples with NV c…
Using the path-integral approach developed by Brézin et al. [ Nucl.Phys.B235, 24 (1984) ], we obtain an analytical expression for the density of states of a spin-1/2 disordered two-dimensional electron gas in a strong, perpendicular magnetic field. The density of states of this system illustrates the interplay between the Zeeman splitting of Landau levels and the disorder-induced broadening. We find that the broadening and the band splitting of the Landau bands are enhanced due to the level repulsion from the mixing of two spin orientations caused by the random scatterings. The comparison betw…
We show that the interplay of cyclotron motion and Andreev reflection experienced by massless-Dirac-like charge carriers in topological-insulator surface states generates a Majorana-particle excitation. Based on an envelope-function description of the Dirac-Andreev edge states, we discuss the kinematic properties of the Majorana mode and find them to be possible to be tuned by changing the superconductor's chemical potential and/or the magnitude of the perpendicular magnetic field. Our proposal opens up new possibilities for studying Majorana fermions in a controllable setup.
The magneto- and Hall resistance of a locally gated cross shaped graphene Hall bar is calculated. The edge of the top gate is placed diagonally across the center of the Hall cross. Four-probe resistance is calculated using the Landauer-Büttiker formalism, while the transmission coefficients are obtained using the non-equilibrium Green's function approach. The interplay between transport due to edge channels and snake states is investigated. When two edge channels are occupied we predict oscillations in the Hall and the bend resistance as function of the magnetic field which are a consequence o…
We investigate the interplay between long-range and direct photon-assisted transport in a triple quantum dot chain where local ac voltages are applied to the outer dots. We propose the phase difference between the two ac voltages as an external parameter, which can be easily tuned to manipulate the current characteristics. For gate voltages in phase opposition we find quantum destructive interferences analogous to the interferences in closed-loop undriven triple dots. As the voltages oscillate in phase, interferences between multiple paths give rise to dark states. Those totally cancel the cur…
Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond have shown promise as inherently localized electric-field sensors, capable of detecting individual charges with nanometer resolution. Working with NV ensembles, we demonstrate that a detailed understanding of the internal electric field environment enables enhanced sensitivity in the detection of external electric fields. We follow this logic along two complementary paths. First, using excitation tuned near the NV's zero-phonon line, we perform optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) spectroscopy at cryogenic temperatures in order to precisely meas…
We theoretically study the band structure and the electronic transport in the Weyl semimetal nanowires in magnetic fields, and demonstrate that the interplay of the Fermi-arc surface states and the bulk Landau levels plays a crucial role in the magnetotransport. We show that a magnetic field perpendicular to the surface immediately hybridizes the counter-propagating surface modes into a series of dispersionless 0th Landau levels, and it leads to a significant reduction of the traveling modes and a rapid decay of the conductance. On the contrary, a magnetic field parallel to the wire adds linea…
We consider the interplay between the antiferromagnetic and Kekulé valence bond solid orderings in the zero energy Landau levels of neutral monolayer and bilayer graphene. We establish the presence of Wess-Zumino-Witten terms between these orders: this implies that their quantum fluctuations are described by the deconfined critical theories of quantum spin systems. We present implications for experiments, including the possible presence of excitonic superfluidity in bilayer graphene.
The interplay between Rashba, Dresselhaus and Zeeman interactions in a quantum well submitted to an external magnetic field is studied by means of an accurate analytical solution of the Hamiltonian, including electron-electron interactions in a sum rule approach. This solution allows to discuss the influence of the spin-orbit coupling on some relevant quantities that have been measured in inelastic light scattering and electron-spin resonance experiments on quantum wells. In particular, we have evaluated the spin-orbit contribution to the spin splitting of the Landau levels and to the splittin…
Bilayer graphene in a magnetic field supports eight zero-energy Landau levels, which, as a tunable band gap develops, split into two nearly-degenerate quartets separated by the band gap. A close look is made into the properties of such an isolated quartet of pseudo-zero-mode levels at half filling in the presence of an in-plane electric field and the Coulomb interaction, with focus on revealing further controllable features in bilayer graphene. The half-filled pseudo-zero-mode levels support, via orbital level mixing, charge carriers with nonzero electric moment, which would lead to field-indu…
We have studied the interplay of an Anderson impurity in Landau quantized graphene, with special emphasis on the influence of the chemical potential. Within the slave-boson mean-field theory, we found reentrant Kondo behaviour by varying the chemical potential or gate voltage. Between Landau levels, the density of states is suppressed, and by changing the graphene's Fermi energy, we cross from metallic to semiconducting regions. Hence, the corresponding Kondo behaviour is also influenced. The f-level spectral function reveals both the presence of Landau levels in the conduction band and the Ko…
We have measured high frequency magnetotransport of a high quality two-dimensional electron system (2DES) near the reentrant insulating phase (RIP) at Landau fillings ($ν$) between 1/5 and 2/9. The magneto\textit{conductivity} in the RIP has resonant behavior around 150 MHz, showing a \textit{peak} at $ν$$\sim$0.21. Our data support the interpretation of the RIP as due to some pinned electron solid. We have also investigated a narrowly confined 2DES recently found to have a RIP at 1/3$<$$ν$$<$1/2 and we have revealed features, not seen in DC transport, that suggest some intriguing interplay be…
Recent experiments on Coulomb drag in the quantum Hall regime have yielded a number of surprises. The most striking observations are that the Coulomb drag can become negative in high Landau levels and that its temperature dependence is non-monotonous. We develop a systematic diagrammatic theory of Coulomb drag in strong magnetic fields explaining these puzzling experiments. The theory is applicable both in the diffusive and the ballistic regimes; we focus on the experimentally relevant ballistic regime (interlayer distance $a$ smaller than the cyclotron radius $R_c$). It is shown that the drag…
We show that a spin-polarized Landau level in a two-dimensional electron gas can carry a spin-triplet supercurrent between two spin-singlet superconductors. The supercurrent results from the interplay of Andreev reflection and Rashba spin-orbit coupling at the normal--superconductor (NS) interface. We contrast the current-phase relationship and the Fraunhofer oscillations of the spin-triplet and spin-singlet Josephson effect in the lowest Landau level, and find qualitative differences.
An established way of realizing topologically protected states in a two-dimensional electron gas is by applying a perpendicular magnetic field thus creating quantum Hall edge channels. In electrostatically gapped bilayer graphene intriguingly, even in the absence of a magnetic field topologically protected electronic states can emerge at naturally occurring stacking domain walls. While individually both types of topologically protected states have been investigated, their intriguing interplay remains poorly understood. Here, we focus on the interplay between topological domain wall states and …
A low-disorder, two-dimensional electron system (2DES) subjected to a large perpendicular magnetic field and cooled to very low temperatures provides a rich platform for studies of many-body quantum phases. The magnetic field quenches the electrons' kinetic energy and quantizes the energy into a set of Landau levels, allowing the Coulomb interaction to dominate. In excited Landau levels, the fine interplay between short- and long-range interactions stabilizes bubble phases, Wigner crystals with more than one electron per unit cell. Here we present the screening properties of bubble phases, pro…
We develop a systematic theory of microwave-induced oscillations in the magnetoresistivity of a two-dimensional electron gas, focusing on the regime of strongly overlapping Landau levels. At linear order in microwave power, two novel mechanisms of the oscillations (``quadrupole'' and ``photovoltaic'') are identified, in addition to those studied before (``displacement'' and ``inelastic''). The quadrupole and photovoltaic mechanisms are shown to be the only ones that give rise to oscillations in the nondiagonal part of the photoconductivity tensor. In the diagonal part, the inelastic contributi…
Motivated by recent experiments, and using the rotating-and-vibrating electron-molecule (RVEM) theory [Yannouleas and Landman, Phys. Rev. B 66, 115315 (2002); Phys. Rev. A 81, 023609 (2010)], in conjunction with exact diagonalization, we develop a unified microscopic approach for the interplay between liquid fractional-quantum-Hall-effect (FQHE) states and Wigner-solid states in the lowest Landau level (LLL) in the neighborhood of nu=1/3. Liquid characteristics of the FQHE states are associated with the symmetry-conserving rotations and vibrations of the electron molecule. Although the electro…
Graphene's honeycomb lattice structure underlies much of the remarkable physics inherent in this material, most strikingly through the formation of two ``flavors'' of Dirac cones for each spin. In the quantum Hall regime, the resulting flavor degree of freedom leads to an interesting problem when a Landau level is partially occupied. Namely, while Zeeman splitting clearly favors polarizing spins along the field, precisely how the states for each flavor are occupied can become quite delicate. Here we focus on clean graphene sheets in the regime of quantum Hall ferromagnetism, and discuss how su…
We show that the solid phase between the 1/5 and 2/9 fractional quantum Hall states arises from an extremely delicate interplay between type-1 and type-2 composite fermion crystals, clearly demonstrating its nontrivial, strongly correlated character. We also compute the phase diagram of various crystals occurring over a wide range of filling factors, and demonstrate that the elastic constants exhibit non-monotonic behavior as a function of the filling factor, possibly leading to distinctive experimental signatures that can help mark the phase boundaries separating different kinds of crystals.
We report the realization of a synthetic magnetic field for photons and polaritons in a honeycomb lattice of coupled semiconductor micropillars. A strong synthetic field is induced in both the s and p orbital bands by engineering a uniaxial hopping gradient in the lattice, giving rise to the formation of Landau levels at the Dirac points. We provide direct evidence of the sublattice symmetry breaking of the lowest-order Landau level wavefunction, a distinctive feature of synthetic magnetic fields. Our realization implements helical edge states in the gap between n=0 and n=1 Landau levels, expe…
Exact solutions of the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) equation for the straight film subjected at its edges to the Robin-type boundary conditions characterized by the extrapolation length $Λ$ are analyzed with the primary emphasis on the interaction between the coefficient $β$ of the cubic GL term and the de Gennes distance $Λ$ and its influence on the temperature $T$ of the strip. Very substantial role is played also by the carrier density $n_s$ that naturally emerges as an integration constant of the GL equation. Physical interpretation of the obtained results is based on the $n_s$-dependent effective…
Impact of Monoatomic Vacancies in 2D Materials on the Performance of Magnetic Tunnel Junction Devices: Insights from Configurations and Interface Interactions
Quantum walks are processes that model dynamics in coherent systems. Their experimental implementations proved key to unveil novel phenomena in Floquet topological insulators. Here we realize a photonic quantum walk in the presence of a synthetic gauge field, which mimics the action of an electric field on a charged particle. By tuning the energy gaps between the two quasi-energy bands, we investigate intriguing system dynamics characterized by the interplay between Bloch oscillations and Landau-Zener transitions. When both gaps at quasi-energy values 0 and $π$ are vanishingly small, the Floqu…
We study the magnetic-field dependence of Landau levels in graphene proximitized by large spin-orbit coupling materials, such as transition-metal dichalcogenides or topological insulators. In addition to the Rashba coupling, two types of intrinsic spin-orbit interactions, uniform (Kane-Mele type) and staggered (valley Zeeman type), are included, to resolve their interplay with magnetic orbital effects. Employing a continuum model approach, we derive analytic expressions for low-energy Landau levels, which can be used to extract local orbital and spin-orbit coupling parameters from scanning pro…
The time evolution of the magnetization of a magnetic molecular crystal is obtained in an external time-dependent magnetic field, with sweep rates in the kT/s range. We present the 'exact numerical' solution of the time dependent Schrödinger equation, and show that the steps in the hysteresis curve can be described as a sequence of two-level transitions between adiabatic states. The multilevel nature of the problem causes the transition probabilities to deviate significantly from the predictions of the Landau-Zener-Stückelberg model. These calculations allow the introduction of an efficient ap…
The lifting of the degeneracy of the states from the graphene $n$=0 Landau level (LL) is investigated through a non-interacting tight-binding model with random hoppings. A disorder-driven splitting of two bands and of two critical energies is observed by means of density of states and participation ratio calculations. The analysis of the probability densities of the states within the $n$=0 LL provides some insights into the interplay of lattice and disorder effects on the splitting process. An uneven spatial distribution of the wave function amplitudes between the two graphene sublattices is f…
We study the spin dynamics of diamond nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers in an oscillating magnetic field along the symmetry axis of the NV in the presence of transverse magnetic fields. It is well-known that the coupling between the otherwise degenerate Zeeman levels $|M_S=\pm1\rangle$ due to strain and electric fields is responsible for a Landau-Zener process near the pseudo-crossing of the adiabatic energy levels when the axial component of the oscillating magnetic field changes sign. We derive an effective two-level Hamiltonian for the NV system that includes coupling between the two levels via…
We study the novel nonlinear phenomena that emerge in a charge qubit due to the interplay between a strong microwave flux drive and a periodic Josephson potential. We first analyze the system in terms of the linear Landau-Zener-Stückelberg model, and show its inadequacy in a periodic system with several Landau-Zener crossings within a drive period. Experimentally, we probe the quasienergy levels of the driven qubit with an LC-cavity, which requires the use of linear response theory. We also show that our numerical calculations are in good agreement with the experimental data.
We investigate the Landau-Zener (LZ) process in spin-orbit coupled systems of single or multiple two-level (spin-$\frac{1}{2}$) particles. The coupling between internal spin states and external vibrational states, a simple spin-orbit coupling (SOC), is induced by applying a spin-dependent harmonic trap. Because of the SOC, the single-particle energy-level structures are modified by the Franck-Condon (FC) effects, in which some avoided energy-level-crossings (ELCs) are almost closed and some ELCs are opened. The close of avoided ELCs and the open of ELCs result in the FC blockade and the vibrat…
